“... helping us achieve our goals of SCC under 200,000.” — Paul Legler

HILL TOP JERSEY FARM, CHANDLER, TEXAS PAUL LEGLER, Manager, pictured with daughter Molly at World Dairy Expo Helping us achieve our goals of SCC under 200,000

“I’ve used Udder Comfort™ for 8 years in herds I’ve owned or managed, ranging 1000 to 5000 cows, and I have to say I just love this product. It does everything I want it to: It gets the pliability of the udder back for easier and cleaner milkout, a faster flow, and comfort for the cow,” says Paul Legler, manager today of Hill Top Jerseys, Chandler, Texas — a high genetic merit herd with several bulls on stud, including “T-Bone.” “We’ve been relying on Udder Comfort for our fresh cows and in the hospital pen. Getting clean milkout on our fresh animals is a better situation for udder health. “We do a prefresh regimen starting one week before calving, when the edema first comes on. We apply Udder Comfort 2 to 3 times before calving and continue after calving.” “Being proactive with the fresh animals has absolutely decreased our need for antibiotic treatments.

“We have seen a dramatic reduction in summer mastitis on the fresh cows and heifers in the East Texas heat. “The big thing is, by removing the swelling and cakiness, we are able to help those beautiful heifers develop. We want to see our heifers reach their genetic potential.”

100% ROUGHWAY 100% PUREBRED REGISTERED HOLSTEINS M I L K

A BIG DAY TO REMEMBER: FRIDAY, APRIL 5, 2013... My Grandson, Wyatt

My Last Day of Milking at Roughway

I am pictured here on my last day of milking, with two of my Roughway 100% registered Holsteins: 2E-91 Roughway Sallie Ava Progress and 2E-92 Roughway Yellow Moon Zenith. Sallie is a 5th generation EX or VG. Moon is a 5th generation EX and one VG-88. The Sallie cow had a Guthrie heifer calf for the new owner. Two thumbs up on the last day, which was a blessing from day one of life with purebred Holsteins to the end.

T Y P E

Here is my son’s and wife’s son, Wyatt, 6 years old, milking his favorite cow, Globe-Run Laddy Uno 2E-92. Uno was a cow that liked to be around people of all ages, in the barn and outside in the pasture. Uno came to Roughway from the state of Pennsylvania when she was four years old, from the Globe-Run herd. She was VG-88 at that time. She then went to EX-90, then to EX-91, and then 2E-92. Uno is a 3rd generation EX with one maternal sister EX-91. She is now in Wisconsin.

Milk is one of God’s most blessed of foods there is in the beginning of life, from baby calves to many other animals of all kinds that require milk at birth. And the same thing goes with human life. For babies born from human mothers across the country, the first food to go into the body of babies born... milk, milk, milk. It is the most important food there ever is when it comes to the beginning of life. When it comes to mothers of animals that require milk at birth and all human mothers, milk’s value is very important in what the mother eats and drinks of all kinds. Healthy food and water play a big, big role and impact on how good their milk is for their babies at birth and beyond.

Over the past years, there have been many scientists and experts who say that the first milk is not good for babies, whether cattle or humans. Milk replacer is the only way, etc. Well, I still disagree! Nature is the best way in almost all cases, but it is what you eat and drink that causes all the problems within the milk, animal or human. In my lifetime I have never used milk replacer, etc. There is nothing more gratifying than to see a calf born, get up and go to the mother for milk, that’s God’s nature at work. Yes, sometimes you have to milk out some in a nipple pail and give to the calf. Many people think they’re better than God and don’t have time for such things! Get out of my way, rush, rush.

There are some people starting to wake up in the dairy industry about all the flushing of cattle that has been going on at a very, very fast pace, of all ages of cattle, and more and more young animals that haven’t even had one calf. ET animals all over the country, plus embryos all over the land. Mostly done by investment-type people who do not even milk cows, and yes, dairy farmers, also.Years ago when flushing somewhat started, it was to older cows that might be what you call over the hill, but now more and more greed has set in. Like I have said before, good science turns into bad science, and greed takes over. Cloning has been bad science before, and it is still bad science, with real truth along with it today. Plus in the AI industry, it is getting so far out of hand with inbreeding and more inbreeding, and they even own a lot of the females, to push more and more inbreeding. Money and greed talks, and not common sense.

with AI associations, etc. The Purebred Holstein Association, what is it??? Is this something to be proud of? Not in my book. Inbreeding, other dairy breeds and beef breeds, all mixing it up?? And then the live winter forums are out the window, facebook and website?? What is next in line, the National Holstein Convention??

Even the National Holstein Association plays a big role in it also. Mixing grade cattle into it with the ID grade registrations all over the market. Plus, that makes more and more crossbreeding in the dairy market, and even the beef breeds mixed in with that. It doesn’t take a doctor or attorney to know this common sense needs to be taught in our schools and colleges, plus morals and standards to the younger and older people. But what does education mean? Sometimes it takes two or three generations for some things to show up. Like I’ve said before, there are a lot of great cattle out there, but fertility of bulls and females and health of all kinds have gone downhill. Plus, so many, many other things have been taking place the past years: calves born dead; a lot of cattle losing calves at two and three months in calf; plus many calves that are deformed in some way. Many of these things are not reported to DHIA etc. There are more and more shots given to keep an animal pregnant. Shots, shots, pills, pills. There is a limit, people, and we are way over that limit, to say the least. We are leading ourselves down the wrong path or road. It is even getting harder to get a three- or four-generation pedigree from other dairy breeds around the country. I think there are six different ones, right, because for some reason they don’t want to reveal the past history of some animals?? I called Brattleboro, VT last summer and asked how many of the 47,181 increases of registrations the past ten years were percentage animals, and I talked to two different staff members at Holstein and I got nowhere. They said they could not reveal to me, or they didn’t know. So I later called a couple of state directors, and they said they would do some checking for me. And now look at the last Holstein Pulse, Winter 2014, and some of that has been revealed. Like I said before, where would the Holstein Associaation be if the door would not have been opened for grades, ID, etc. The same way The people who know their God shall be strong and carry out great exploits. If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do? Our only hope to rescue our nation is to stand firm in our faith and spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Family, faith and the future of our nation are under attack today as never before. A slide toward socialism engineered at the highest levels of power. A movement against the Christian faith that slights our heritage and exalts Islam instead. A corrosion of freedoms previously unheard of in the USA. A plunge into economic ruin that mortgages our grandchildren’s future. A depth of immorality and perversion beyond understanding. Today the income of the vast majority of Americans is taxed at marginal rates between 15 and nearly 40 percent! That’s not to mention all the other taxes, sales, capital gains, etc that Americans pay to support their ever-expanding government. The Bible tells us that we are to pay our taxes and subject ourselves to civil government because it is instituted by God - for a specific purpose. Government is not to take the place of God as the be-all provider of needs. It has been established to punish evildoers and keep civil order. President Lincoln said that all of the good from the Savior of the world to mankind comes to us through the Bible, and that, except for the Bible, we could not know right from wrong. Faith without works is empty and works without faith are blind. The ideal is to combine our good works with a strong faith, for God does indeed help those who help themselves. “Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness.” Isaiah 5:20 NKJV. We can feel outnumbered. But God can make people into true heroes, and heroes of the faith are what we need today. May God raise up more

We Americans of today, together with our allies, are passing through a period of supreme test. It is a test of our courage, of our resolve, of our wisdom, our essential democracy. Big, big word in life... “Temptation.”

Take a look at larger herds, will say 200 plus in my state and others, also. You pay $1.00 per cow up to 200 milking animals, anything above that number is free to be a state member. Example, say you have a herd of 1000 milking animals, you pay $200 and not $1000, and there’s $800 you don’t have to pay. And you don’t have to say how many milk-age cows you have on hand at that time, even. Think about that, people, of how many dollars that are not put into the state funds. Let alone of all the cuts that are given by the National Holstein Association, they have so many breaks there of ID grades and purebreds. Sick, sick, to say the least. Who are we, people, laugh if you want, someday you will not be laughing. Volume and discounts can be two very bad words if not used right! The more animals are confined, the more disease outbreaks and health outbreaks will occur each and every year, plus more and more shots and more and more salmonella outbreaks, etc. When it comes to classifying a herd, the cattle that are not owned by the herd owner himself or herself, should be put in a different herd program by themselves. More and more herds today, cattle in a herd, say for example, a herd of 60 cows, maybe 15 are owned by one or two other people. They should not be included in that herd. They should be put in a separate program of their own. It is a very false way of doing herd classifications, let alone false advertising by the herd all the way around. This has been going on too long, to say the least. Wake up, people, even if it is the year 1900 or 2014, right is right, and wrong is wrong. I just wonder how many EX animals there are in the country today. Most all consignment sales today have 25 percent to 50 percent in them, and in a lot of consignment sales, consignors put a minimum bid on embryos to be sold. If that is OK, well, live animals should be able to have a minimum bid also! Some do, and no one knows it, behind closed doors, etc, or they bring a set price no matter what?? It has been real nice talking with people young and older by phone and the nice letters I have received the past year. I know I have missed phone call messages, hope to get back to the ones I have missed sometime. Thank you!

Christian heroes in our time. The Isilia flag is starting to fly in D.C. and the Muslim world is closer and closer in USA. Worry is a sin because at its heart, worry is nothing other than a disbelief in God. We are all born sinners, but we help each other in the right ways from sin. There is a difference in life. Maybe God has, indeed, called some to be shepherds. Or maybe He has called some to serve as shepherds for a season, like David. David learned lessons during that period of his life that prepared him to face Goliath and other future trials. We witness for the Lord, whether for good or bad, based on how well we render service to our employer. The Apostle Paul wrote, “Whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men.” Colossians 3:23 NKJV. In my part of the land, say 20 miles each way, we have around 22 different types of religions, and not very many are Christian faith churches. I would say it is that way all over the country today. About 45 year ago, Russia said that it would take the USA over little by little without war. Well, take a big look. Starting with Washington, D.C. and the federal government, war is here and many, many people don’t realize it. China and Japan own us and Russia is moving in. Good thing that D.C. is not on the Mississippi River, because it could not handle any more pollution! Why were you born? Why were you born again? Why were you brought into the Kingdom of God at this time? For what reason? For Esther, it was a great crisis for her people. We live in a time of crisis. We, without doubt, are in the midst of a great cultural, spiritual war where the forces of darkness are attempting to overwhelm the forces of light and virtue, and whoever is most active and vigilant, as Patrick Henry said, will be the victor in that battle.

Temptation is everywhere, but there is also a way of escape, a safety railing that God has provided to protect us, and that is His Word. As parents, we are responsible for providing a Godly education for our children. We need to wake up to what’s happening to kids in America before it’s too late. Brad Bright proposes that Christians are losing the battle for our culture because we’re not staying focused on the real issue, God. Instead, we are divided in our battles over how to deal with the symptoms of living in a sinful world. The Lord of Heaven is staking His reputation on how His people live out their lives in every sphere. Christians are to serve as God’s credentials, living proof that He is Lord of all. The invisible God is to be seen in you and me. Salt is a preservative that keeps food from getting rotten, just as a Christian’s influence should preserve decency and morality in the world. Salt stings in a wound, just as a Christian’s loving influence should make sin feel uncomfortable. Salt is a source of purification and healing, just as Christians should be a source of comfort and healing for those in distress. Salt makes things taste better, just as the life lived for Christ brings joy to the soul. Salt causes thirst, just as the life of a Christian lived out in the world should make others thirst for the living water that is found only in Christ. Salt has incredible properties, but none of them are of use if the salt never gets out of the salt shaker. The advance of technology, even during my lifetime, is simply amazing. But is it good, or bad? The answer, of course, is both. The cellphone was great and still is, but technology has gone overboard again. Cable, smart phones, the internet, and facebook have made more bad than good. Many kinds of evi and false teachinglare more accessible. Look out, young and old.

100% PUREBRED REGISTERED HOLSTEINS M I L K

... AND A LIFESTYLE TO REMEMBER Haying crew

T Y P E

Thank You!

MARCH Madness 2014 Saturday, March 15, 2014 • Frederick, MD

It has been a blessing the last 45 years when it comes to baling hay. I have always smallsquare baled my hay over the years. I have always had fantastic help. A lot of high-school young men have helped bale hay, from country boys to town boys, and the families have been really good about getting me help. I even had two calls this past summer asking when I was going to start baling hay. They did not know I retired from milking. It has been a great experience working with the young people, and they have been very dependable and good workers. But it has been fun along with it, also. Usually I’ve had about four helpers, and if there was a delay from a breakdown or weather, they might go do a little fishing on my pond right nearby, or just goof around the pond, etc. Sometimes when I had to start milking, one of the fathers would come out and help after their work, and sometimes one or two of the boys’ girlfriends would help put hay in the elevator, and maybe when we were done, we would cook some hot dogs down by the pond, and talk about life, etc.

In the Romeike case, the final option is to appeal to the United States Supreme Court. While homeschooling is legal in all 50 states, Christians should remain watchful, since the Obama administration appears committed, in this case, to arguing that the right to determine a child’s education and religious upbringing is not a fundamental parental right. Two Christians, Jerry Newcombe and Richard Land, said that if you were going to have an evangelical Mt. Rushmore of the last half of the 20th century, they couldn’t imagine any Mt. Rushmore that wouldn’t have the late Dr. D. James Kennedy on it. Dr. Kennedy had a tremendous influence on life, his teaching had a tremendous influence on worldview. Christians are facing increasing hostility for standing for our principles. Just recently in Oregon, a Christian couple were forced to close down the bakery they owned after refusing to provide a cake for a same-sex wedding. And in San Antonio, Texas, the city council tried to pass an ordinance barring anyone from serving as a city official who demonstrates bias by word or deed against homosexual behavior. That could include anyone who ever publicly affirmed the Bible! The clear understanding of Biblical principles shaped our nation, and now these same principles must be applied to American life today. Christian pilgrims knew well the words of the Apostle Paul: Scripture says we should be grateful in all things. We’re often ready to thank God when good occurs, but what about when bad befalls us? To illustrate this point, there was a poor elderly woman, quite ill and near death, who was praising and thanking God when a visitor arrived. The visitor asked, “How can you be thankful? Look at this room, the walls are so cracked you can see right outside.” The woman smiled and said, “That is exactly what I was thanking God for just now; that I could see the sunshine through the crack in the wall.” Seeing the sunshine through the crack in the wall is a perspective to live by that could transform our lives. Even when we face the worst of times, we can look up, see the sunshine of God’s love, and be thankful. If we trust Him and His Word, we can be thankful for all things that come our way. Many people don’t know the historical background of Thanksgiving. They don’t realize America started out as a socialist country. This was the type of economy we had for the first two years of our nation. And now across America, the Ten Commandments are taken out of courtrooms and off public property, nativity scenes are banned in many places, and Christian students are censored at school, all under the guise of tolerance. If our nation continues to deny the Christian basis for our freedoms, we will lose those freedoms. Our counry is at war in many ways and many people do not know it. There are so many different beliefs that are taking Christians over, if we don’t look out each and every day. A longtime sportscaster, Craig James, was fired from Fox Sports Southwest because he had once, as a

senate candidate in Texas the year before, voiced his moral opposition to homosexual behavior. Another sportscaster, Chris Broussard, was directly asked on air by a colleague at ESPN about the coming out of a homosexual basketball player. Broussard responded, “If you’re openly living in unrepentant sin, whatever it may be, not just homosexuality, I believe that’s walking in open rebellion to God and to Jesus Christ.” Broussard was roundly attacked in the media, and subsequently disavowed by his own network. A couple, Dick and Betty Odgaard, are facing a suit from the Iowa Civil Rights Commission for declining to host a same-sex wedding at the gallery they own because it would violate their religious beliefs. The United State Navy cancelled a living nativity scene at a tree-lighting event on a base in Bahrain after the Military Association of Athiests and Freethinkers complained about it. Said one officer, “Here we are serving in the Middle East, defending our country and other people’s religions, and we couldn’t understand why we can’t enjoy our own religious freedoms.” Divorce rate is 52% in the USA, and now 31% of men and women just live together and do not ever plan on getting married. Not counting the gays and lesbians in the USA. Back maybe 35 years ago, when the women got out more in the working world in towns and cities, and the farmers were told to plow up the fence rows, and about then the front doors opened up and the back doors did the same. Then about 70% of the man and the woman’s family life got all mixed up. Greed and greed of money and pills of all kinds got really going more and more. Children’s lives were mixed up. Some people could handle it OK, but most could not. Think about it, people! Where are we today in 2014 in the USA? Attorneys, counselors, doctors, child care, child abuse of all kinds, a lot of morals and standards went out the window. In many ways, we have everything, but no one can sit still, everything around us is fast, fast, and no time, and more and more government grants of all kinds, and you will say, what does the government have to do with it? Just stop and think about many things of today’s way of life, of all the different fields we live in, from farming to city and town life. Let alone the drug and pill life, etc. And what is built with grants of all kinds? There is a limit. I have said it before, our government has no money, but China and Russia and Japan do.What would happen to the auto industry in our country, if the auto industry and government said, no more Toyota-built cars in our country of the USA. There are 132 nations that hate the Christians today. And our government gives money to the nations that hate us. Think about that, people. Common sense is like deodorant. The people who need it most never use it. Money does not fall on you, you fall on money. What you do daily is what makes you. You cannot buy God with money.

Live simply, love kindly, and care deeply. 1456 123rd St • Castalia, Iowa 52133 • 563-567-8484 Happy trails to you, Larry Finch • Owner • Manager • Herd Superintendent until we meet again.
