Purebred Holstein breeders that I have had my eye on the past 30 years in the state of Minnesota with great cattle are: Olmar Farms, Sleepy Eye; Mahoney Holsteins, Cannon Falls; Sapa Ska Holsteins, Lake City; Albrecht Holsteins, Watertown, from which I had a really great cow that went on to be 4E-93 at 12 years of age with over 200,000 8303F lifetime. She also had a 2E-92 dtr. And then Apple Acres Holsteins, Hastings, from which I had a cow that was VG-88 at the time and went on to be 3E-93 and 170,000 7000F lifetime and had two VG dtrs in other herds. I also had purebred Holstein cattle from herds in Canada the past 30 years: Walnut-Knoll Holsteins, Rowntree Holsteins, Vanderpost Holsteins, Grumblehill Holsteins, all from Ontario; then Comestar Holsteins, Quebec; and Roswitha Holsteins, Bulrush Holsteins, Rainyridge Holsteins, and Benner Holsteins in Manitoba; plus RF Holsteins in Saskatchewan. Two went EX-90, two EX-91, three EX-92, three EX-93, two EX-94. I’ve had people tell me that I should flush some of my cows but I never did, and I feel good that I didn’t.

Here are some bulls of the past 10 years and the present that are 100% purebred and that we’ll see deep in pedigrees and cow families down the road: Aspen, Lightning, Crimson, Braxton, Windjammer, Dempsey, Fever, Guthrie, Destry, Lauthority, Atwood, Future, Goldwyn, Laurin, Dundee, Bolton, Jasper, Advent-Red, Stormatic, Stanley Cup, Debonair-Red. I have received the Hoards Dairyman magazine for the last 7 months. I do not know why. I did not order it. I used to about 20 years ago. Whatever. Anyway, I judged the 5 dairy breeds they had in it this time each month, Jersey, Ayrshire, Guernsey, Holstein, and Brown Swiss. I got all the classes right except the Holstein class, and I did not get any of the 4 animals right in that class. Maybe I need to change breeds or get glasses! In the last month I have talked with some beef breeders about what has been taking place in the purebred Holstein industry the last 10-12 years and some have said they should take 8 or 10 of their beef cows and breed them to purebred Holstein bulls and start a registered dairy herd and work up to a 99% registered Holstein herd. And then I have talked with three other dairy cow breeders from other dairy breeds and they have said the same thing. If I knew that this was going to take place 60 years ago when I started up in the purebred Holstein life, I would have told the National Holstein Association where to put it, to say the least.

P.S. When I write in the Cattle Connection, I do not go into a lot of details of what I say, but I try to get the point across in a small way. If China would lend or give me some money like they do our government, I would go into more details with many different topics.

When it comes to showing dairy cattle of all breeds and all ages over the years, I have always liked to see the group classes at the end of the single classes, from state to national level. Most of those classes have to do with breed breeders alone and animals they have bred by their choice of bulls, like Produce of Dam and Dam & Offspring and maybe the Best 3 Females and Premier Breeder. It is nice to see the Best Bred & Owned in each class. I know everyone has to start somewhere from maybe a calf on up. What kind of gets me the last ten years is a lot of people leave when it comes time for group classes. They are in some ways more important than the single classes. Whatever.

And now Brattleboro is going to be along the Mississippi River the last of June 2014. It is a good thing that it is at the end of June, because the Mississippi River shouldn’t have quite as much pollution from the runoff from the winter snow melt and spring rain, and from all the farm chemicals, plus all the town runoff. There is a limit in more ways than one. The gulf can handle just so much. Hopefully Brattleboro doesn’t add too much to the already polluted Mississippi River. That is sad to say, but it is so true in many ways today.

There was an error in my last ad in the Cattle Connection by P E just one small word, but yet a big word that was meant for that paragraph. It said EX animals and was supposed to say ET animals. If you don’t have the last Connection, the paragraph should have read like this: “I just wonder how many ET animals there are in the country today. Most all consignment sales today have 25 percent to 50 percent in them, and in a lot of consignment sales, consignors put a minimum bid on embryos to be sold. If that is OK, well, live animals should be able to have a minimum bid also! Some do, and no one knows it, behind closed doors, etc, or they bring a set price no matter what??”

The only Holstein activities that I have been to in the past year have been the Iowa State Fair, Midwest National Spring Show, which I have been to the past 3 years, the Wisconsin Championship Show, and the World Dairy Expo, which I have missed only four times in the past 45 years. I would like to go to the Central Plains Holstein Show, maybe this year in June. I gave up my Iowa State Holstein membership this year. I am very tired of being a member of our state when members with more than 200 cows have to pay just $200, and anyone with under 200 cows has to pay $1 per cow. It is so wrong in every way, and there are other states that have somewhat the same policy. Someday people might wake up? Happy New Year.

All they would have had to do at least was apologize in some matter later, it would have helped a little, but it did not happen! It is a very, very poor way of doing business of any kind! Back about 35 years ago there was a man employed by Holstein who was let go on somewhat the same matter. He was at my place in Norwalk, IA one time, and that was one time too many for me. But back then, Holstein was a purebred association and I think there were more morals and standards at that time. Maybe!
