“... a key tool in helping us get the premiums ...” — Cathy Tank

MILK-FLO HOLSTEINS Cathy Tank, New London, Wisconsin Milking 150 cows — 87 lbs/cow/day (3x) SCC 100 to 150,000 “We’ve been using Udder Comfort™ ever since I bought my first gallon of blue spray 2 years ago. At first, I thought it was expensive. But now, after using it faithfully with our fresh cows and seeing these results, I don’t even think twice,” says Cathy Tank. She owns and operates Milk-Flo Holsteins near New London, Wisconsin. She does one of the 3 daily milkings and works off the farm as well. Cathy loves developing the cowherd and has strived to keep the dairy moving forward in the 5 years since her husband Bob passed away in 2009. Daughters Elizabeth, 15, and Rebecca, 11, are his family’s 4th generation on the dairy farm, which is home to 150 milk cows plus replacements. The herd produces 87 lbs/cow/day with SCC averaging 100 and 150,000. “Udder Comfort is easy to use and it’s cow-friendly. I like that,” she says.

“SCC used to be 300 to 350,000 and tough to get down. Udder Comfort is a key tool in helping us get the premiums and reduce our need for antibiotics during lactation. “We use Udder Comfort most on the fresh cows, spraying udders 2x/day for at least the first 3 days after calving. No doubt about it, this stuff works, and the blue color is a good marker to tell everyone to pay attention.” Quality Udders Make Quality Milk

In June/July we had 5 cows receive maximum classification scores. I would like to thank my cow partners for continued success: Nate Goldenberg with Brown Swiss and Amy Woodis and Gabe Blaisdell with Ayrshires. A huge thank you to all the people who sold to us and purchased cattle from us this past year. Lastly, to my family and friends for all the hard work that goes into this. Success is never achieved alone, and they keep the farm going while I am working, exhibiting cattle or judging shows.

Kelly-View Farm has been the Premier Breeder/Exhibitor at ESE for 18 of the past 20 years. In the past 10 years,we have bred/owned/developed 23 cows scoring EX-93 / EX-94 within our 30-cow herd.

I was at the 2014 Midwest National Spring Show. The judge of the Black & White Show was Chris Lahmers. He did a super, super job from top end all the way down to the bottom end, and with real good reasons all the way through. A big plus to me. As I was there, a man came across the ring to me and shook my hand, a big surprise to me at the time. His name was the late Marlowe Nelson. He helped me with three different Holstein sales I had at Norwalk, Iowa back in the 1970s. He was a real gentleman with help in the ring etc. When I moved to Castalia, Iowa, he helped with my first 100% purebred Holstein sale in 1989. I had a total of three 100% purebred Holstein sales here at Castalia, Iowa. A man in the past that was really, really great to show under in the days when I showed a full string of 100% registered Holsteins in the late 1960s and the 1970s, at county fairs, district shows, state shows, Iowa State Fair, Waterloo National Dairy Cattle Congress, and then the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin, was the late David P. Dickson of Wisconsin. I showed a lot of cattle where he was the judge in charge. It was real, real great to show cattle in front of him, whether on top of the class or in the middle of the class or at the bottom, and I have been everywhere. It was really, really fun, as well as learning, as well as work. But I had respect for wherever I was at in the ring. Fun, fun, fun. This past year, 2014, I would say there were more dairy dispersals of all kinds across the country than ever before, purebred or grade, with a lot of wonderful cattle being sold. I am not talking about the so-called consignment sales across the country, where a lot of animals are cut and dried when it comes to price, etc. etc. I am talking about farm dairy dispersals. Cattle have been selling well, but really not that well; by that I mean, pound cows have been selling two to three times what they were. Take a 1500 lb cow, she will bring $1800 to $2000, and I know a lot of cows that are 2000 to 2300 lbs, they will bring $2800 to over $3000. Many, many dairy farmers have been living on that type of thing. Otherwise they would really be hurting more than they are, even with the higher so-called record milk prices. There’s more than just feeding a cow that costs money in taking care of a cow, and that cost has tripled in the last 10 to 15 years, to say the least. But what is a family dairy farm? Across the country, let’s say a family of five: Parents and three teenage children. Three to four of them have to work off the farm to be able to make ends meet, whether they want to or not. Then there are the so-called “corporation farmers” of all kinds, which is sad, sad, all across the country, but who cares, live today and not tomorrow, tax deduction one day in many ways, and something else the next week, etc, etc, the list can go on in many ways. I have talked with many people across the country who will say they have 200 to 3000 cow herds, and I ask what is the average age of your herd, and they will say around 3 1/2 years of age. Well, people, for a cow to be fully developed she should have three calves and be five to six years old. With all the so-called high-class setups today, why hasn’t the average age of the cow gone up in herds like this? I will say this, the so-called confinement and all the different kinds of artificial preservatives and acids of all kinds that are put with their feed, plus the way a lot of feed is raised and cared for, etc, and now there are all the hoof disorders and lameness taking place, and that is caused by too much acid-type food fed to cattle, etc. If the cow is not pregnant in so many days and milking under 80 lbs of milk, she’s out the door. Shots and more shots given, and more and more cancer is growing in the meat of the young animals, but they are not around long enough for it to show up in that time frame. Another reason for a young cow to not get pregnant or even hold a calf, etc, but they are not around long enough for it to show up, etc. I would say that 35% of all cattle that go to market, dairy and other, shouldn’t be in the food chain, even if FDA approved. Cancer research is right in front of our eyes and that goes for pork and poultry also. Salmonella showing more and more every day, even in dairy milk, food of all kinds. Manure of cattle today, believe it or not, there are some problems with it because of what is fed to cattle across the country, etc. Dirt is a big, big part of our life. Dirt, yes dirt, it is soil, right? And there is such a thing as clean dirt, and then there is contamination of soil and dirt. Just like water,

A man’s wisdom gives him patience, it is to his glory to overlook an offense. Live simply, love kindly, and care deeply. One don’t care about the clouds, just sing a song and it will bring the sunny weather.

Four Very Good dams behind Jade, and she has two Very Good daughters. Jade came to Roughway from a sale when she was around six years old, and I took her off all the shots etc, what I call bad things, and got her health back to real life. She is now 3E-94 for her new owner in Minnesota. It doesn’t happen to all cows, but it was great for her. A long story short.

100%

and the water that you and I drink, as well as cattle. Clean dirt is good for cattle, yes, dirt. Clean dirt is even good for children to play in. But clean dirt only, and not all the yards that are sprayed with all the chemicals, etc. Sad, sad, to say the least. More and more people are becoming lazy and lazier each and every day, young more so, but all. Plus, afraid to bend over and pull a weed or pick up a penny, and that is a long story of its own. When you look at a tree, does it grow overnight? (No.) Many, many people need to slow down in life in many ways, etc. There is a limit, and I have always said this for many years now, and it is more true than ever before. Just off the record a little: How many dairies across the country would there be if they had to pay top dollar and full insurance on employment, and could not have Hispanic workers. Our country is to help everyone, but there are limits to that, and that story has more to it. I just wonder how many people living in the United States today that are not American citizens or even plan on being one or even the ones at birth that are in our grade schools, high schools and colleges that play sports of all kinds and also in the so-called pro sports of all kinds. I have some people checking this out. There are more and more people paid big money to come to America and play in all kinds of sports, and some of the money comes from the schools and colleges themselves of all kinds, and we call our teams American teams, and some of them cannot even talk our language! Some might say, what does this have to do with anything? In America we have more different nationalities and religions than any nation in the world. Why? Because we have opened our doors more and more every year for the past thirty-plus years, and China, Japan, and Russia love every minute of it. We are coming very close to a one-world government. Just like a dictatorship. It is just like the plan set up by Russia years back, doing it without real war in some ways. We even have the National Guard stepping in more and more all over our country, USA. Look at China, they contract many, many tons of grain or dairy products, etc, and maybe a month later they will back out on their contract. I have never believed in contracts anyway, and never will, but can America’s farmers back out on their contract with grain or anything else of that nature? I think that is a big NO, right, or anyone else. What are we going to do, take China to war? I don’t think so! Not when we owe them about 20 trillion dollars and climbing every day. Like I have said, a one-world government coming. Every day we are losing America, people, to the different nationalities and religions of all kinds that are against Christian values. This is a lot like our national Holstein association. It was once a purebred Holstein association, and now it is a percentage registered Holstein association, meaning almost everything under the sun can be registered, starting from any dairy breed, and there are other dairy breeds that have been doing it for some time. After four generations they are 100% purebred, and as soon as the right kind of money talks and the right push, the Holstein association will be doing it, too. Canada has been doing it for some time, and they are using some of the percentage bulls that are in the USA, and selling ETs and offspring back to the USA, and capitalizing on it, to people who think nothing about it, money at work in the wrong, wrong way etc. We are leading up to a one-world dairy breed. Just like in Washington, DC, that is working on a one-world government. Vermont is very close to DC, maybe too close! There are some national board members bragging about all the percentage animals they are ID’ing and percentage registrations being made. Money talks first to them. National Holstein has what they call Herds of Excellence. Why do they use ME averages, rather than the real thing, herd average? That is just like using just BAA and not revealing the real thing. I have received the Holstein World for many years and they have a calendar in it at the end of the year for the next year, 2015. I threw mine away this time, because there are getting to be less and less what you call purebred Holstein breeders in it. Maybe big deal to some people, but not me.

Roughway Holsteins 1456 123rd St • Castalia, Iowa 52133 • 563-567-8484 Larry Finch • Owner • Manager • Herd Superintendent

Genomics is about 35% right in some ways, and cloning was 100% wrong from day one in all ways, and it died out very fast. The so-called sexing technology is bad science in many ways. A cellphone is real good science, but Facebook plus all of the other things done on cellphones today should be ruled out by law and done away with. 20% of people young and old can handle it, but 80% cannot. Very, very sad thing across the country. If people only knew about the very, very bad. It is not a joke, people, you will see a lot more bad than good. Voting is perhaps the greatest right and privilege we have as American citizens, and yet too often, Christians either do not exercise that right or fail to vote for Biblical values when they do. We are perilously close to the edge–the edge of bankruptcy, the edge of God’s removing His hand of blessing from our nation! Jesus called us to be “salt and light” in our society. We are to obey the government “unless it causes us to sin.” At the very least, in carrying out our civic duty, we should vote. Not only should we vote, but we should vote our godly values. We should know where our candidates stand, especially on the vital values issues. One big problem also is that candidates and people in the White House don’t know how to say YES or NO to these questions. Not coincidentally, day by day out nation is slipping further and further away from the Christian foundations upon which it was founded. Meanwhile, many evangelical pastors encourage their congregations to avoid politics altogether and just share the Gospel! One pastor dismissively told his wide audience, “If you want to dabble in something that has no bearing on eternity, that has no bearing on the Kingdom of God, then you can dabble in politics.” Unbelievable. There are so-called Christian pastors out there today who will perform marriages to homosexual men and women! Think hard, people of our country. The same pastors who rightly tell us to focus on the Great Commission forget that Jesus himself tells us in the Great Commission that we are not only to baptize disciples, we are also to teach the nations everything that God has commanded! Apparently, God does not agree that Christians should avoid participating in politics and government. Make no mistake. America is at a watershed moment in her history. If we continue down this road, it will soon be too late to turn back. There are a lot of people in America on food stamps and welfare etc. In Iowa we have, I think, the most gambling casinos in the country, plus the socalled Iowa lottery, etc. Eight that I know of. It is amazing how many people who are on food stamps go to these places and play the lottery. I have never believed in these places and never will. The same should be with everyone. A state living on gambling money for taxes, etc. Just think of people on food stamps and they go to them and spend our money. Sad and sick in many ways. All casinos should be shut down everywhere. Years ago, men fought over gold, and now men and women fight over money, and what is on the other side of the fence, and now it is more open because there are not as many fences. Greed upon greed! About 30% of people can handle this and 70% cannot! This can be a very long story to a lot of good people. Sometimes I repeat somewhat the same things in my ads and writeups in the Cattle Connection. I have had ads of all kinds for 24 years now, and I have them all here at home. But a lot of it goes with many other things that come up at Roughway. Sometimes I wish I was wrong, but the truth is the truth!

Living by faith may be hard, but you will not overcome hard things without faith. Fear does not please God! Godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. Happy trails to you until we meet again.

Now more than ever, sexed semen adds value to your business.

semen products deliver conception rates rivaling conventional A.I.

R5 Heifers calving back-to-back females produce up to 981 lb (445 kg) more milk over the course of the two lactations. (Hinde, K, et al. 2014. PLoS ONE 9 e86169, doi: 10.137/journal.pone.0086169)

R5 Use SexedULTRA™ semen products in lactating cows as well as heifers. R5 Increased milk production more than pays for the cost of AI using SexedULTRA™ semen products.
