Proof time It is April: time for new sire proofs! For many people in our industry these are exciting times – many things to discover, and many things to check. Do the genomic sires that I used some years ago live up to their expectations? Have new genomic sires or daughter proven sires appeared at the very top? Have new bulls arrived that exactly fit the breeding goals of my herd? Talking about breeding goals: this makes our mission of checking proofs more complicated than it was in the past. Since the turn of the millennia loads of new traits have arrived on the scene. Until then we worked with type and production, so the TPI formula pretty much told us where to go. But now that picture has completely changed: a large number of fitness traits has made it much more challenging for a sire to exactly serve all of your needs. On top of that, we have new criteria such as polled, A2A2 and BB-kappa-casein. If you also require any of these traits, the exploration of the sire rankings is an even bigger adventure. But then again: we all know that the perfect bull does not exist, no matter how hard breeders and sire-analysts try. As always it is a matter of setting your priorities right, so that you are still able to find the bulls that will work best for your herd.

The ideal candidate will have a BS in Dairy Science, Animal Science, or related field and three to five years of sales experience. Competencies and requirements include: exceptional sales skills; excellent communication skills; positive, professional, and enthusiastic attitude; very strong attention to detail and organizational skills; knowledge of the U.S. dairy industry, dairy cattle management, genetics, and the registered Holstein business; ability to regularly travel. The majority of the herd is housed in a sand-bedded free-stall barn with a bedding pack pen at one end for fresh cows. They are fed a 1-group TMR ration of corn silage, haylage, high-moisture corn, soymeal and minerals. ‘Having stalls that are the right size for the cows and keeping that sand bedding well managed makes a big difference to cow comfort. We also have a bedding pack in another barn for the show animals and they receive a hay and grain ration.’ Justin sees the amount of time they spend with the cows as key to their management style. ‘We are probably a bit old fashioned in our approach but we really enjoy working with the cows. Because we are around the cows a lot we still rely on observation for heat detection and don’t use any of the electronic systems. Everything is bred here off natural heats and conception rates are pretty good. We like to work with nice type cows but there is no question that health traits and fertility are real, so we also select for those traits in our breeding program.’ The cows are milked through a walk-through step-up parlor. ‘It means we can pay a little more individual attention to cows. We have a philosophy here that if any cow has trouble negotiating that 17 inch step-up because of mobility issues or a deeper udder then we shouldn’t be milking that kind here anyway.’

FOUNDATION Justin’s parents, Jim and Nina, started farming here in 1976, bringing with them 19 Ayrshires and 2 grade Holsteins. As time went by they were able to add a few registered Holsteins – usually by buying blemished animals that came from solid cow family backgrounds – and the Windy-Knoll-View herd was developed progressively from there. A grand-daughter of one of those early foundation animals was Windy-Knoll-View Ultimate Pala EX-94, a massive ribbed powerhouse of a cow that proved to be a wonderful transmitter: Today around 70% of the herd traces to Pala! Her most famous daughter was WindyKnoll-View Promis, an EX-95 Rudolph who combined outstanding production records with a successful show career. She was also a top transmitter with her sons including Windy-Knoll-View Pronto, her Outside son who became perhaps the best known bull from the family. A full sister to Pronto, WindyKnoll-View Pledge EX-95, became the dam of the Goldwyn daughter Windy-Knoll-View Panini, a third generation EX-95. They were all big ribbed cows with lots of frame and capacity and had excellent feet and legs. They each made big lactation records from impressive udders, and improved with age displaying great longevity. This core group of

cows forms the backbone of the Windy-KnollView breeding program.

BULLS Other bulls from the family include WindyKnoll-View Rubens Pro, a Rubens brother to Pronto, and also Windy-Knoll-View Phoenix, a Goldwyn from Outside Pledge. A high type bull from the family was Windy-KnollView Prime Time, a Durham son out of the 94-point Stardust daughter of Pala. Currently the bull Windy-Knoll-View Pep-Red, a popular red bull that is selling lots of semen at Triple-Hil Sires, is a Contender out of an Advent daughter of Pledge. A bull from the family currently in use in the Burdette’s herd is the Australian bred bull Eclipse Perennial, a Crushabull son with +4.13 gPTAT that traces through High Octane-Atwood-Damion to the Dutch cow Watermolen Princess, a Goldwyn daughter of Pledge. ‘Perennial looks very promising and we are delighted to see the success other people are having with the Pala family,’ comments Justin.

SHOW COWS An impressive young cow that should attract attention as a Senior-3 at the shows this year is Windy-Knoll-View Paquiet VG-88, who is sired by Walnutlawn Slater and traces through Phoenix-Dundee-Rubens-Stardust to Pala. Paquiet was the Bred & Owned Champion at Harrisburg last fall. Another young cow with a bright future is the Undenied daughter Windy-Knoll-View Passkey who is out of Panini and will show as a Senior-2. ‘Undenied may not have worked consistently for everyone but he has worked very well for us. We have 6 milking and quite like them,’ comments Burdette. ‘Solomon was a bull that really worked well for us so we continue to use him. We had 12 daughters scored averaging 87 points at 2.10 years. They are low maintenance cattle. The Doorman’s have been extremely good here too, with good substance and width to them. We have some very nice young cows by the Mogul son Gambler, and our King Royals calving for the 2nd time look nice. We were slow to use King Doc

Windy-Knoll-View in Pennsylvania Jim and Justin Burdette: ‘Our goal here is to breed cattle that you enjoy looking at, but they also need to be efficient and trouble-free producers too.’

so ours are just coming up to calving. We would have 10 High Octane’s that we are very pleased with. We didn’t use much McCutchen but they were a bit extreme for us. We have big framed cows here but we find if they don’t have enough width and substance to them if they fall down they can’t get up too easy.’

HEIFERS The Burdette’s continue to use a deal of ET. ‘We’ve shied away from IVF. We find we get good results with conventional flushing using sexed semen. There’s been considerable improvement in the conception rates with sexed semen over the past 5-6 years, and it’s now available on a wider range of bulls,’ notes Justin. Sexed semen is also used for about 25% of matings though they have to be careful not to raise too many heifers. ‘Land is so expensive here and we can’t grow our land base. Surplus heifers have not been worth much for a few years now so there is no point in wasting resources feeding more replacements than you need. Actually, right at the moment prices have shot up as people have perhaps used a bit much beef-on-dairy and with the higher milk prices they now want to milk a few more cows.’ The Burdette’s have dabbled with a little beef-on-dairy, but

only on repeat breeders. Calves are raised in hutches and fed whole milk plus 22% calf starter with free-choice hay and weaned at 75-80 days. They then go into groups of 4 and fed grain and hay, which they continue to be fed right up to breeding age. ‘Once they are bred they go to the other farm where they get corn silage and hay. We usually pick our show heifers out at about 4 months of age and they are kept separately on hay and grain with high protein.’ Some intriguing calves will be born in September resulting from embryos found on the bottom of a tank – Counselor’s out of Pala herself! ‘It will be fun to see how they compare with modern genetics, but at least we will have a few more direct daughters of old Pala.’ l
