Region V Coordinator Corner: Lisa Gruszka Hello Region V! My name is Lisa Gruszka and I am your Region V Coordinator. I am excited to be serving this wonderful region and NODA! I can’t believe how fast fall semester is winding down. Some of you may have already started your spring programming and others (like my campus) will be starting right after the New Year. It was energizing to return home from the 2015 NODA Annual Conference refreshed and rejuvenated, ready to hit the ground running with my students and staff. I hope you had the opportunity to attend but if you didn’t or missed a session you wanted to see, you can access all the presentations on the NODA website. NODAC 2015 Conference Reflection

Greetings, NODA Region V!

On behalf of the 2015 Annual Conference Program Committee, I would like to thank each and every one of you for attending the 2015 Annual Conference on October 24-27 in the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado! The Annual Conference Program Committee spent over two years planning a four-day experience that would challenge our members to Elevate the conversation of orientation, transition and retention in higher education and student affairs; Innovate our OTR programs as we could take them to the #NODAnextlevel; and Rejuvenate ourselves in developing the personal skills to advance in our career journeys. Over these four days, the 1,110 NODA members attending the Annual Conference were able to accomplish this and more! CONFERENCE SPEAKERS & SPECIAL INITIATIVES Our conference keynote speakers and special initiatives took the Annual Conference experience to the #NODAnextlevel in many ways!  Dr. George Kuh kicked off the conference as our featured speaker, challenging each of us to think differently about our OTR programs as a high-impact practice in student engagement.  Moderator Teri Bump from American Campus Communities along with panelists Dr. Jeanine Ward-Roof, Mike Knox, and Marcus Langford provided great career advancement insight to our members navigating the next steps in their professional journeys.  Representatives from the following associations convened and challenged our NODA members to advocate for the transition experience through cross-campus collaborations to most effectively support our students: o ACPA: College Student Educators International – Dr. Rachel Beech o Association for Student Conduct Administration – Dr. Jennifer Waller o Association of College & University Housing Officers-International (ACUHO-I) – Allan Blattner o Association of College Unions International (ACUI) – Dr. John Taylor o Association of Fraternity/Sorority Advisors (AFA) – Mark Koepsell o NASPA: Student Affairs Administrators in Higher Education – Stephanie Gordon o National Association for Campus Activities (NACA) – Ken Brill o NIRSA: Leaders in Collegiate Recreation – Dr. Steve Kampf o NODA: Association for Orientation, Transition & Retention in Higher Education – Dr. Beth Lingren Clark  Moderator Anne-Marie Kenney joined panelists Ferene Paris Meyer, Dr. Gwen Fears, and Region V’s own Liz Kurt & Katie Granholm for an authentic dialogue regarding women in higher education, student affairs, leadership, and OTR. I would encourage each of you to not allow these conversations and ideas to end since your time in Denver has ended. Our Association continues to benefit as you keep these conversations going on your campus, with NODA colleagues, through social media, and at Regional Conferences! The 2015 Annual Conference would not have been possible without you, our NODA members. NODA members are truly the lifeblood of this Association. You, our members, volunteered on-site, reviewed educational session proposals, presented 161 educational sessions and 8 pre-conference sessions, reviewed awards and publications sessions, and continue to network and support each other’s questions and ideas. The 2015 Annual Conference was the fourth NODA Annual Conference committee that I have served on. I would each of you to consider volunteering with the Association through service on an Annual Conference Committee! It is an experience like none other! If I can ever be of any service to you, please feel free to contact me! Brett L. Bruner, M.S. Chair, 2015 NODA Annual Chair Director of Transition & Student Conduct Fort Hays State University

Extended Orientation Network Update: Trends/highlights in network In November, Texas Christian University hosted the 2015 Extended Orientation Institute (EOI) and accommodated over 160 individuals, including professional/staff members, graduate students, and undergraduate students. This has been the most attended Institute to date. Throughout the institute, attendees had a variety of presentations and roundtables to further discuss and explore areas within extended orientation. As a network, we were excited to see more institutions sharing, learning, and connecting with each other throughout the weekend. We are looking forward in continuing this trend and find new ways to expand the Extended Orientation Network through the institute. Network chair updates The Association recently appointed a new set of co-chairs for the Extended Orientation Network. Alina Quintana and Jamal Smith will serve a two-year term as co-chairs through 2017.

Jamal Smith serves as the Coordinator of New Student & Family Programs at The University of Texas at Tyler. In his role he oversees New Patriot Orientation, first year experience programming, family weekend, and the Patriot Parent Association. Since being selected as an Orientation Leader as an undergraduate, he has had a passion for working with and developing students! Jamal is a two time graduate of Stephen F. Austin State University and enjoys Game of Thrones theories, college football, and patio weather. Alina Quintana serves as the Coordinator for Orientation and Parent Programs at Florida International University where she advises Panther Camp, the extended orientation program at FIU, and oversees parent and family programming. Alina has been involved within orientation, transition, and retention programs since her time as an undergraduate and her passion in assisting student leaders through their development continues to grow each day. Alina is a two time graduate of Florida International University and enjoys binge watching TV shows, traveling, and adding guacamole to her Chipotle order. How to get involved If you work an extended orientation program on your campus, we encourage you to join the Extended Orientation Network through the NODA website. Once logged in to the Association website, NODA members can join the network by selecting the “Join Group” option at the top of the network’s homepage. Being a member of the online network group will allow you to receive periodic emails and announcements. Members of the Extended Orientation Network are also encouraged to share the great work taking place within your program by submitting educational session proposals for your region’s conference, as well as at the annual conference. Lastly, the Extended Orientation Institute is a way to stay connected with the larger population of professionals working with extended orientation programs such as camps, weeks of welcome, etc. Attending the Institute is a great way to involve your student leaders. Details for the 2017 Extended Orientation Institute will be available after the new year. Jamal Smith & Alina Quintana jamalsmith@uttyler.edu & aquinta@fiu.edu Co-Chairs Extended Orientation Network
