Greeting Region V! I am sure all of us are in the full swing of program planning and maybe some of you are even close to the start of welcoming our new students to our campuses. Here at the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities, we are in the midst of our student leadership training and preparing them for what is to come this summer. The deep connections and the impact we make with these students never ceases to amaze me. They truly do such good work for our programs! With that being said, if you have an amazing student, don’t forget to nominate them for the Outstanding Undergraduate Student Leader or the Outstanding Graduate Student regional conference awards which are due on Friday, February 24. These connections wouldn’t be possible without the work of our professional staff members. Is there a colleague that has gone above and beyond or has helped you to become more successful? Nominate them for the Outstanding Orientation Professional or New Orientation Professional. Remember, you can nominate someone from another University too! You can find the descriptions for all the NODA Regional Conference awards here: https://noda.site-ym.com/page/R5_leadership_app Region V has many opportunities to get involved. Getting involved at the regional level is a great way to get your feet wet with leadership in NODA. As you may have seen, we have the following positions currently open: • Communications Coordinator • Educational Specialist (new position for Region V) • Minnesota/South Dakota/Manitoba State or Providence Coordinator • Co-Host for the 2018 Regional Conference Please let me know if you have any questions regarding any of these positions. I am excited to see you and your students at the Region V Conference “The Heart of OTR” next month in Sioux Falls, SD. Your co-hosts, Shannon Gilligan Wehr, Adam Karnopp, and Kristi Okerlund have been working hard to make this an educational and fun conference. You can read more about the conference details here in this newsletter. Lisa Gruszka, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, juhli001@umn.edu Region V Coordinator

State/Province Coordinator Updates Illinois State Coordinator:
Hello IL! I hope everyone has had a great start to their spring semester. I have an exciting update I wanted to share. It seems that due to the current financial state of IL— many professionals are unable to attend this year’s regional conference. It is still important, however, that everyone has the opportunity to network and spend time discussing issues we are facing at our respected institutions. Therefore, I am pleased to announce a “Drive-In Business Meeting” for professionals on Friday, March 31 at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. I recognize this overlaps with the regional conference— however, I have received permission from NODA to hold this meeting in conjunction with that event due to the various travel restrictions within the state (amongst other financial difficulties). So come and spend the day connecting with professionals within the association while engaging in conversations surrounding OTR and the state of IL. Please note, there will be a small fee of $35.00 to attend. More details about the day to come as registration will be going live in the next couple of weeks. If you have questions or specific topics you would like to see included in the agenda, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly at awhite4@niu.edu. Thanks so much. Adam -Adam White, Illinois State Coordinator, Northern Illinois University awhite4@niu.edu

Beyond the caffeine, make sure you are practicing positive self-care and setting an example for your Orientation Leaders. You won’t be able to take care of others if you haven’t taken care of your own needs first.
It’s that time of year where many of us start to run on mostly caffeine and Orientation Leader enthusiasm! This guide will help you with the appropriate level of caffeine intake. Enjoy!
Thanks, Ashley -Ashley R. Lang, Iowa State Coordinator, Wartburg College Ashley.lang@wartburg.edu
