NODA Region V Newsletter Updates 7 & Save the Dates 7

Greetings Region V! I hope that you are in full recovery mode after a busy summer! I’m sure many of you are already starting to think ahead to spring transfer programs as well as the new crop of incoming students next summer is sure to bring. As you look over assessment data and meet with campus partners to discuss plans for next year, I hope that you’ll also look to the many resources available through NODA to help enhance your programming and initiatives. One of those resources (which is rapidly approaching) is the opportunity to attend the Annual Conference! In addition to NODAC, Watch for State Drive-In opportunities in the near future. If you haven’t heard from your State Coordinator already about plans for this fall or spring, please consider reaching out to them and offering to help put together a drive-in meeting or conference for your state. Speaking of State Coordinators, over the course of the summer we’ve had several leadership roles which have opened due to folks moving to new positions or taking on new responsibilities associated with their roles. That said, I’m pleased to share that there are new leadership opportunities to serve as the State Coordinator in both South Dakota and Minnesota. We continue to have a vacancy for the Manitoba Province Coordinator position as well. If you’re interested in running for one of these roles, or would like more information about the responsibilities associated with them, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Finally, as I prepare to pass the leadership torch to a new Regional Coordinator, I also wanted to share that I’ll be transitioning to a new professional role outside of the field of orientation, transition, and retention. While I’m excited about the next step in my career, I’m leaving my position with a heavy heart as I will not be working with you all in a professional capacity or connecting with you at conferences in the near future. I’ve found the colleagues and friendships that I’ve established via NODA to be invaluable. It’s difficult to put into words how much you all mean to me and how much I value you and your work, but I’ll never forget the impact you all have made on my life. It’s been an honor and a privilege serving in this leadership role and I have no doubt our next Regional Coordinator will help Region V realize even greater potential. NODA Love! Sincerely, Jon Sexton jonathan-sexton@uiowa.edu Region V Coordinator REGIONAL LEADERSHIP: Regional Coordinator Communications Coordinator Social Media Coordinator 2016 Regional Conference Host(s)

We are excited to host the 2016 NODA Region V Conference in Iowa City, Iowa from April 1- April 3, 2016. Our conference will take place at the Sheraton Iowa City hotel, located in the heart of the downtown district. The conference hotel is within walking distance of various shops, restaurants including the University of Iowa campus. Many of our institutions are facing budget constraints and increased accountability; yet we seek to find a balance as we continue working to serve the needs of incoming students throughout their time at our respective institutions. Therefore, the theme of this year’s conference is Writing the Next Chapter—which encourages attendees to begin sharing ideas with each other surrounding ideas and strategies that will support innovation and forward thinking across the field of OTR. We hope to provide professional development opportunities for professionals and graduate students while offering a unique experience for undergraduate student leaders as they seek to fine tune both their leadership and networking styles. This year, we are striving to offer additional programming specifically for graduate students, as we recognize many of them will be in the middle of their first professional job search. We are currently securing keynote speakers and hope to announce a line-up in time for the Annual Conference. Questions about the Regional Conference can be directed to one of the three co-hosts: Adam White (awhite4@niu.edu), Cordy Love (cordy@siu.edu) or Cara Wiebel (cara-wiebel@uiowa.edu). We look forward to seeing all of you in Iowa City! Adam, Cara, & Cordy

CAS Standards Updates What’s New with CAS? The CAS standards are a terrific method to use in your program assessment. This past summer CAS released the Ninth Edition of the CAS Professional Standards for Higher Education, which includes 13 sets of revised standards and updates to the General Standards for all 44 functional areas. The ninth edition features many exciting updates. CAS has revised its core standards - the General Standards - to provide direction for functional areas across higher education. CAS has also released 13 sets of updated standards for various functional areas including standards for Student Conduct Programs, Sexual Violence-Related Programs and Services, and Women and Gender Programs and Services. One of the most exciting updates it the release of forty-four revised Self-Assessment Guides (SAGs) that are being released with the ninth edition. The SAGS are a collection of templates and worksheets that you can use when conducting a program review. This downloadable assessment workbook includes the standards and guidelines along with a series of criterion measure statements used to judge the level of program compliance with the standard. The SAGs are available as electronic downloads through CAS and via the Campus Labs Compliance Assist platform. Which Set of Standards Should I Use? There are several sets of standards that may be of particular interest to Orientation, Transition and Retention professionals. Check out the program standards for Orientation, Parents & Family Programs, Transfer Student Programs, and Veteran and Military Programs to name a few. The Orientation Program standards are available free of charge on the NODA website, www. nodaweb.org. CAS publications and other materials can be ordered at www.cas.edu Want to Learn More About CAS and Program Assessment? Make sure to attend the presentation at NODAC 2015 on CAS “Elevate Your Programs through Assessment” which will describe how to conduct a program review using CAS and also how to engage your staff in writing learning outcomes. Also, Check out the Resource Center on the CAS home page www.cas.edu. You will find links to CAS publications and presentations as well as information on how to apply the standards. About CAS The Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS), a consortium of professional associations in higher education, promotes the use of its professional standards for the development, assessment, and improvement of quality student learning, programs, and services. CAS includes representatives from 40 different professional associations including NODA. In fact, NODA was a founding member of CAS in 1979. Individuals and institutions from the nearly 40 CAS member organizations comprise a professional constituency of more than 100,000. Representing a significant majority of higher education practitioners in student programs and services throughout the country and beyond, no other body exists that so comprehensively speaks for this important field of endeavor.

GLBTA Issues Network: The GLBTA Issues Network aims to provide support, education, and professional development for NODA members relating to queer life in a variety of ways. With the understanding that every institution and person is unique in their understanding and comfort with GLBTA issues, we endeavor to help NODA members both on their campuses and as part of the greater association. Our network is open to all members including Allies to the queer community. The Network provides input to NODA leadership relating to professional development, diversity of community, and current campus trends, which impact the LGBT community, and assists the NODA membership in the educational process on related issues. There are opportunities for members to get involved at the regional level as we are frequently in need of representation and support at regional conferences. This role could entail hosting network events or presentations during regional conferences or providing regional insight at the Association level. We’re looking forward to seeing you and supporting you and your campuses. --Chris Landry, GLBTA Issues Network Chair
