May Newsletter Question Responses: Q: Does your institution have a student staff developed theater performance (skits or entertainment) for your orientation programs?
A: Yes, we have a “Traditions & Revue” session. The OLs do skits on campus life issues and mix in dances and singing. It’s about 45 minutes and the students really love it. No third party vendors, in house.
A: We play a video and/or act out a skit where a student is on the phone with a family member during our student/family panel. We use a theatre troupe to discuss diversity during our welcome week program.

Words of Wisdom: Moving from Summer to Fall Featuring Liz Kurt At Iowa State, my staff is responsible for summer orientation and our bridge program just before classes begin. I believe the greatest perk of our August bridge program is the ‘lift’ my staff receives from this program. Granted this is a hectic weekend, but the energy of the new class and seeing our hard work come to fruition is huge!
The first day of classes, I personally provide lunch for my staff. This is a great couple of hours to relax and debrief about the weekend and the summer. I also encourage staff to each take a vacation day that first or second week of class to personally recharge. Once we complete the evaluations from summer and fall, I also make sure we (as a staff) read the positive kudos our new students and guests share with us. -Liz Kurt Want to be our next words of wisdom spotlighted Orientation professional? Contact Lisa Gruszka at juhli001@umn.edu or Erin Sullivan at esulli@illinois.edu to include your words of wisdom!
Region V Coordinator Corner: Lisa Gruszka Hello Region V! Did summer fly by for you? It definitely did for me. Hopefully you have had some time to recharge. As orientation programming wraps up, I always struggle with the transition of being very busy to a slower fall semester. Though this may or may not be true for you, this time offers the opportunity to look back and reflect on our recent programming. Fall semester can be a time for review and reflection. Make a priority to have dedicated time for this reflection by reading program evaluations and collecting feedback from your student leaders and colleagues. What were the major trends you saw this summer? How could you use technology to enhance your programs? Fall is also a good time for personal reflection and planning your professional development. Are you meeting the goals you have set with your supervisor? What conferences do you plan to attend this year? What new skills are you looking to gain? Is this the year you will submit an article to the Journal of College Orientation and Transition or present a session at the Region V Conference in Sioux Falls, SD? Is this the year you apply for a leadership position with NODA? Just a reminder, there are a few NODA leadership positions available now. Once you have identified your successes and areas of improvement, come with an action plan on how to make the most of the NODA Annual Conference. Seek out sessions and colleagues that are the experts in the room for your specific program and professional needs. I look forward to seeing many of you in Indianapolis next month! State/Province Coordinator Updates Illinois State Coordinator: Greetings Region V! Congratulations on getting through yet another (what I hope was fantastic) summer of programs. I know many of us are currently in our recruitment cycle for student leaders—so I want to wish everyone the best of luck in that process. While I do not have many updates for Illinois specifically…I want to encourage everyone to attend The Annual Conference in Indianapolis, IN starting in just a few weeks. I know budgets are tight within the state, however, even if you can only attend for a day I would highly recommend it. It’s within driving distance for many of us! Finally, I want to plug the 2017 Regional Conference (shout out to Adam, Shannon, and Kristi) which will take place in Sioux Falls, SD from March 31-April 2. Definitely mark your calendars as it is sure to be an outstanding conference. Volunteer opportunities will be made available for those interested very soon. It’s a fantastic way to get involved at the regional level. Hope to see you in Indy! Adam -Adam White, Illinois State Coordinator, Northern Illinois University –awhite4@niu.edu
Wisconsin State Coordinator: Trends and highlights in your State/Province The UW System will be looking into removing the tuition freeze for the next biennium (17-19). This may assist as several schools had lower enrollment. A lot of Wisconsin schools have seen an increase in Illinois students due to some challenges with the state of Illinois budget impacting tuition prices at public institutions. It sounds like a lot of schools are facing challenges with the Affordable Care Act, so this hot topic is worth discussing as a profession. v Updates as NODA State/Province Coordinators I am still looking for someone to help with a drive-in conference. This is a great opportunity for a new Orientation professional to assist with! For more details please, contact me directly at daly@uwm.edu v State socials, events, or meetups (NODA annual or this semester) I am fortunate enough to be able to attend the annual conference this semester, so if anyone is coming from Wisconsin, let me know and we can meet up to talk all things dairy.

#SocialMediaWins At the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, we decided to highlight our 2016 Orientation Leader team to assist with recruitment. By utilizing snapchat’s “My Story”, we created a theme “My IL Story #OLife2016”. We used this from marketing the OL role, templates for all OL materials, and on our social media platforms. New Student Programs actively uses Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram with the help of Hootsuite. We have used snapchat on a few events partnering with public affairs for geofilters with the university account. We themed our posts throughout the year and after to spotlight our OL team that helped increase our followers/likes! EX: Introduced the OL—name, major, hometown and our themes (Major Mondays, Tour Tuesdays, Wisdom Wednesdays, Thrilling Thursdays, and Flashback Fridays). #OLspotlight #NSP #OLife
