Welcome to September! Growing up in upstate New York, September was always one of my favorite months. Even after living full time in Florida since 1990, turning the calendar to September still brings favorite memories of those brilliant fall leaves. We may not have the trees to signal Fall but I can always tell by the trickle of snowbirds returning from up north. We have a few more projects to complete before we hit season, but we are fired up and ready for a great 2023-2024 here at the club.

This month in addition to our regular monthly events like Birthday Bash, Bingo and Prime Rib Night; we are welcoming Fall with two events Join us Wednesday September 21st for a Member Mixer to thank our faithful summer supporters and kick off the Fall season

Then on Saturday September 23rd, break out your lederhosen and join us for an Oktoberfest Buffet and German Beer tasting. We look forward to seeing you!

Did you know that September 12th is National Thank a Superintendent Day? Starting before dawn daily to provide our members with the best playing conditions possible, their efforts are essential to this great game of golf Even if you aren’t a golfer, the beautiful green vistas of the golf course can provide a soothing moment to refresh. Please join us in thanking our hard working crew for their efforts and dedication. Consider posting a Thank you on Social Media using #THANKASUPER and remember to give an encouraging shout out to our entire grounds team any day – but especially on Tuesday September 12th

Don’t forget the first week of October we are celebrating our 25th Anniversary! We have a full week scheduled of special events and fun. Watch for all the details coming out soon.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRO SHOP

Billy Van Arsdale

Thankfully the sweltering heat we have endured is more behind us than ahead of us During the summer months I get an opportunity to play a little more than in “ season ” , mostly afternoons Many holes I continue to repair divots in the fairways and ball marks on the putting surfaces For example, when I am playing It’s not uncommon to repair 7 or 8 divots on the 8th tee and a dozen ball impact marks on the putting surface. The last time I played I decided to “time” how long it took me just to repair my divot on the tee and my ball mark on the green. I took me 12 seconds to repair the divot and 15 seconds on the green. Not even 30 seconds to complete both tasks. This is common golf etiquette. The next time you are on the 5th or 8th green just walk around and look at how many 1 inch long “ scrapes ” are brown This is an unrepaired pitch mark that the mower comes along the next day and basically chops of the grass leaving dirt I have also attached a link you can copy and paste into your browser that’s shows the wrong way to get a ball out of the cup We have to many players who still take their putter head and lift the ball out of the cup tearing the sides of the cup for the rest of the players behind them Lets all pitch in so others can enjoy the same conditions you did!

Please use the grandhavengc@grandhavengc.com address for any league sign-ups, tee time requests or cancellations, or major tournament sign ups.

WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION

“Back to school!” the children shout (sometimes happily, sometimes not)! But the ladies of WGA exclaim with joy, “Back to GOLF!” With this as their theme they officially begin the season on September 19th. Golf for the day will be a Scramble from the Live Oak Tees, followed by a luncheon and general meeting. Events for the upcoming year will be discussed. A number of our golfers, who are also talented quilters are working on a quilt, which will be “raffled off” at a later date in the year. The proceeds from the raffle will supplement the league’s two charities the Food Bank and the Angel Tree. Thanks in advance, ladies, for all your hard work! Lady golfers out there! Are you looking for fun and friendly competition, weekly games with prizes, and meeting fellow golfers? Then consider becoming a member of Grand Haven

Our Opening Day Par-Tee (scramble and barbecue) is September 7. It will be great fun for all.

MEN’SGOLFASSOCIATION

The MGA had a busy August with two major events: The Boys of Summer Tournament and the MGA Summer Shootout

Congratulations to “Show Me the Green”, captained by Joe Dresnok and Jim Davis, for their comeback victory in the Boys of Summer, held on August 2 and 9 The defending champion RoughRiders, led by Tom Smith and Mike O’Brien, held a 12-6 lead after week 1 in this Ryder Cup-like event But Show Me The Green came back in week 2 with a 13-6 total for a final total of:

Show Me The Green 19

RoughRiders 18

It was one of the closest MGA tournaments ever! The event culminated with the Boys of Summer luncheon where Joe Dresnok doubled his fun by winning the 50/50 raffle Thanks to all four captains for their leadership in the event

The Summer Shootout field, from left to right: Carl Zimmermann, John Rybacki, Frank Large, Jim Davis, Greg Wynn, Joe Dresnok, Steve Samuel, Bill Bryce, Mike O’Brien and champion Jack Hinsch

Jack Hinsch receives the coveted “Fickled Finger” trophy from Billy Van Arsdale and MGA President Gary Biermann as runner-up Joe Dresnok and Jack’s caddie Larry Geiser look on.

Our Summer Shootout was held on August 24, pitting the top ten point earners during the summer season in a 9-hole event to determine the Summer Shootout champion One player was eliminated on each hole until just two remained on 18th tee Joe Dresnok came very close to tripling up, on top of his Boys of Summer captaincy win and 50/50 raffle win But Jack Hinsch played well all day and especially on number 18 to edge him out and earn the title and the coveted “Fickle Finger” trophy that goes to the winner

Special thanks to Billy Van Arsdale for his leadership in both events, to the kitchen and wait staff for lunch on the 9th and for making sure we were well hydrated via the beverage cart during the shootout Thanks also to the 20 or so volunteers that helped make the Shootout a success

We just started our fall season, culminating in our Holiday Classic in December It’s a perfect time to come check us out for a week or join permanently You can contact our Membership Director, Carl Zimmermann (bzcz1227@yahoo com) for more information
