June is here, and it's hard to believe we are almost halfway through the year May brought the end of a drought and left us with many days of severe rain The golf course is reacting well to the rain, and we
are happy we're now in full growing season With the growing season also comes that time of year for aerification This process began on the Member Course on Tuesday, May 30, lasting three days We will start the Tournament Course aerification on Tuesday, June 13 While aerification is every golfer's worst nightmare, it is a necessary process and gives us good greens to play on year-round I want to thank our Maintenance Team for their long hours and hard work during the aerification process
As many of you know, Bob McHugh, our Director of Golf, will begin his new endeavor as General Manager at Black Hawk Country Club on June 1 Again, I would like to thank Bob for everything he brought to the Golf Club of Houston over the past two years and wish him the best of luck in his new role We are nearly through the process of hiring Bob's replacement and are excited to make an announcement soon about our new Director of Golf

We will see you guys on March 2, 2024!
NateThe month of May was brutal as we received close to 10 inches of rain in 17 days Heavy downpours destroyed our bunkers on three different occasions Bunker restoration has taken a toll on our crew, but they are committed to full restoration This process begins with removing silt and debris Fortunately, we use bunker machines with hydraulic push blades to move sand from low areas back up the slopes We must then manually distribute the sand with hand rakes Mechanical rakes are used to break up and level the sand in all areas once the manual work is done around the top edges With our labor tracking system, we have found it takes approximately 500 manhours to restore bunkers on both courses We would much rather use this time to detail the property
June is a busy month for golf course maintenance here at Golf Club of Houston Greens aerification of all 47 greens will be our major focus Hopefully, we will have mild weather, no rain, and sunshine to make our job much easier, allowing for better results The process will include 3X vertical mowing at approximately 1/8 inch depth, mowing and blowing debris, aerifying with 7/16 inch coring tines, sweeping up cores, top dress heavy enough to fill 90% of the holes, brushing sand into holes (3X), blow off debris, apply gypsum and turn on the water Potentially follow up with light sanding to fill holes that settle out after irrigation And finally, apply long-chain carbon fertilizer (nitrogen plus potassium) to enhance recovery We will monitor the moisture in the root zone daily to ensure optimum moisture is available to enhance recovery
For the first time in over a year, Willie and I have an almost full staff. We are still looking for an Assistant Mechanic. We are spending many hours training the new employees, and most are doing OK. Guiding our staff and the weather are two of our biggest challenges. Fortunately, our equipment is dependable except for normal wear and tear. Please bear with us as we continue to push the crew to “aim for perfection” in every maintenance task.

Our staff was thrilled to welcome PGA TOUR Champions player David Toms back for the Mitsubishi Electric Invitational Series hosted on Monday, April 24, 2023 Toms, a native of Monroe, Louisiana put his stamp on the Tournament Course, serving as the player consultant along with course designer Rees Jones So it was a welcome home of sorts for Toms, who has racked up two wins this year The Galleri Classic at Rancho Mirage, California and the Cologuard Classic in Tuscon, Arizona. Both wins and stellar play this year have catapulted Toms into second place in the Schwab Cup Rankings
Toms conducted an entertaining clinic for the select participants of the private event hosted on the Member Course and then treated the players to his shot-making skills on Hole #12 throughout the day. During the clinic, Toms answered questions on a range of topics, including proper ball positioning, the basics of hitting fades and draws consistently, and the top errors of most amateur players He was gracious in answering every question and even stayed to take pictures with our team members
Muscle mass is often associated with physical strength and aesthetic appeal, but its significance shows more profound health benefits Emerging research over the past decade has highlighted the numerous benefits of maintaining and building muscle mass for overall longevity and health
Maintaining muscle mass is crucial for healthy aging and disease prevention A 2018 study published in the American Journal of Medicine found that individuals with higher muscle mass had a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and all-cause mortality Additionally, the study highlighted that muscle mass was inversely associated with metabolic syndrome, a cluster of conditions linked to an increased risk of heart disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes
Increased Metabolic Health-
Muscle tissue is metabolically active, meaning it requires energy to function As such, having a higher proportion of muscle mass in the body can enhance metabolic health Research published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism in 2016 demonstrated that increased muscle mass was associated with improved insulin sensitivity and better glucose control, which are essential factors in preventing the onset of type 2 diabetes Moreover, a higher muscle mass-to-fat mass ratio has been shown to boost resting metabolic rate, facilitating weight management and reducing the risk of obesity
Muscle and bone health are intricately linked, and maintaining muscle mass plays a pivotal role in preserving bone density Studies published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research in 2012 and 2017 revealed that higher muscle mass was associated with greater bone mineral density and reduced risk of fractures, particularly in postmenopausal women Resistance training, which helps build muscle mass, has been shown to stimulate bone formation and improve bone mineral density
The accumulating body of evidence suggests that muscle mass plays a vital role in promoting longevity and optimal health Building muscle mass through resistance training exercises has been shown to protect against aging and promote overall longevity Do you want to learn how to incorporate strength training into your lifestyle?
