Tunghai: Winter’s warmth serenity in the heart of Ilha Formosa by Sondang Pondan Perlindungan Leoanak RISTEK-DIKTI Bridging Program Participant of The State Polytechnic of Agriculture Kupang

It was three days before my arrival in Ilha Formosa, a beautiful island with its’ amazing high-rise gulf in the east of Asia. In this wonderful island, there lies Taiwan, a country with one of the best educational system in Asia. Nervous, scared, anxious, excited, all these feelings were scattered inside my mind, as this would be my destination to find the best advisor for my future study of a doctoral program. Yes, there would be three months for me as a Bridging Program participant and also as a research scholar candidate to give my best in order to get an acceptance letter, an approval letter to open the door for me to get into a desired program. My name is Sondang Pondan Perlindungan Leoanak, RISTEK-DIKTI Bridging Program Participant of The State Polytechnic of Agriculture Kupang. This is my story.

The Bridging Program is a program initiated by The Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education of Indonesia (RISTEK-DIKTI) and is in collaboration with The Ministry of Education of Taiwan represented by Elite Study in Taiwan (ESIT). The main purpose of this program is to facilitate, to connect and also to help the participants to meet the requirements of the selected universities in Taiwan, so we as participants could become the accepted doctoral candidates in those schools at the end. As we started this Bridging Program back in November, 2016, at first I spent three days in Jakarta, studying about how the people, the environment, and the education system are like in Taiwan which could be very different from my beautiful country Indonesia. I carried these questions in my mind along with my 5 hours flight from Jakarta to Taipei, and another 2 hours bus trip to get to Tunghai University. Tunghai University is a very attractive campus in Taichung city. The main feature of the campus is the Luce Chapel since Tunghai was founded as a private Christian university. It is also a historical site which is worthy to visit. Once we arrived at Tunghai, we were welcomed by several professors and the staff from school. They also gave us a wonderful reception which made me feel warm and comfortable. Their smile and hospitality served as answers to all the questions that I had carried during my journey to Taiwan. They provided a short introduction about the school which convinced me that there should not be anything for me to worry about for the next three months during this Bridging program. After a warm welcome given by the Tunghai staff, I was shown where my dormitory is which appears to be a cozy place, and everything that I need includes hot water for bathing & drinking, convenient stores, food stalls, and canteens is all readily available to my use. Also, to my surprise, there is a fully equipped kitchen which is available for my use if I want to cook some homemade food at any time. Therefore, it fulfills my yearning for some homemade Indonesian meals.

I would like to share some great memories that I have had with my six bridging program participants/friends since I arrived at Tunghai. One of them was a one-day tour to Sun Moon Lake which is located in central area of the western part of Taiwan. During the tour, we took a speedboat to see this beautiful lake, and we also went to the other side of the lake to see a live dancing and a singing performance presented by one aboriginal tribal group who live around the lake. We were amazed by their great performances, as their dance and song were very attractive and full of energy. After that, we had our lunch in a restaurant next to the performance area. The restaurant is nearby the lake and the meal served was very delicious. At the end of the tour, we had a change to take a gondola ride, which is a 5-10 minutes cable-cart ride, so we got to see the fascinating scenery of the entire lake from above. Our jaws were dropped during this ride because of the beauty of the scenery. Another great experience provided by Tunghai University was an industrial visit to the Industrial Technology and Research Institute (ITRI) in the southern part of Taiwan. During this visit, we saw the process of making 3D printing, a future era of the world’s digital printing. Also, a process of making the 3D printing was clearly explained to us. We also had a chance to see the ITRI laboratory that keeps all of the materials and equipment used to design products and to make production trials for such printing. For me, this was a valuable experience as I could witness how the future printing process could be carried out in years to come with my naked eyes. I also noted one surprising thing about Taichung city and it is regarding the usage policy of the public transit system. The reason behind my surprising finding is the city government provides free public transportation to everyone who travels in the city including their local residents, citizens living from other cities, as well as foreign visitors of different countries. Such transportation policy offered by the local government is rarely found in other parts of the world. As a result of that, this allows me to take free bus rides to visit one shopping mall to another to find some valuable goods for my relatives back home. Some big shops such as Taisuko mall, Sogo mall, Feng-Chia night market, and Asean Square offer many options for me to choose

various unique souvenirs for my family and friends in Indonesia. There was also one unforgettable moment happened between me, one of the teachers in Tunghai University and also my buddies. It was happened on the first day of January 2017, the New Year’s day. Our teacher’s name is Ms. Wen-Lei (Jessica) Pang who is our English mentor. At that time, she and her husband invited us to their home for a New Year party celebration. We cooked Indonesian food like rendang beef, gado-gado salad and also soto soup with luat chili sauce. As most of Indonesian food is hot and spicy, so we cooked those meals with lots of chili and seasoning in order to present the authentic Indonesian flavor in this precious occasion. It took about 2 hours for us to prepare and serve all those dishes on the dining table. The best moment happened was when we held our hands together as a group and every one had a chance to make our wish and hope for the New Year before eating. This precious moment carried on with many meaningful conversations and sharing of personal stories with each other. Lots of smiling and laughter were seen and heard among us from this wonderful gathering. This party lasted for about three hours and during the party I could see the fog spreading outside of the windows. This means that the temperature dropped and it must be very cold outside. However, we did not feel cold or chilly. I supposed that it is because this connection we had with one another like a family, naturally tied us together, and it enlightened a fire inside of us, then finally warmed up the room where the party was held. Feeling of being comforted and blessed were the words that represented how I felt during that night especially as I was away from home. Those valuable experiences and memories that I have had from this Bridging program make me realize that the generosity of the people in Taiwan, especially the teachers and the staff in Tunghai University have brought those unforgettable moments to my life. Their kindness, generosity, and love have helped me to experience the winter’s warmth serenity found in a cold winter here in Taiwan, which will last forever in my heart. Before I end this story, please allow me to express my gratitude to RISTEK-DIKTI for this

remarkable learning opportunity, so I could experience those amazing moments. I also would like to say “thank you” to ESIT and Tunghai University for these warm experiences that I had even in a cold winter. Thank you for letting me to experience not only the best moments in Tunghai campus, but also to other parts of Taiwan. I hope those valuable experiences will stay with me for an extended period of time in my life. I wish that I will return here again to relive another winter’s warm serenity as that was the wish I made at the New Year’s gathering.
