Why Study in Taiwan? 1.1 About Taiwan
1
• The Country Taiwan, also known as Formosa (from Portuguese: Ilha Formosa meaning "Beautiful Island"), is an island situated in East Asia and located off the southeastern coast of Mainland China. "Taiwan" is also commonly referred to as the Republic of China (ROC). The capital city of the ROC is Taipei. Separated from the area commonly referred to as mainland China by the 120 kilometers wide Taiwan Strait, the main island of Taiwan is 394 kilometers long and 144 kilometers wide. To the northeast are the main islands of Japan and the East China Sea, with the southern end of the Ryukyu Islands of Japan directly to the east; the Philippines lies to the south of Taiwan across the Bashi Channel. The mountainous island spans the Tropic of Cancer and is covered by tropical and subtropical vegetation. • Culture The culture of Taiwan is a blend of Confucianism, Han Chinese, Japanese, European, American, global, local, and Taiwanese Aboriginal cultures, which is often perceived in both traditional and modern understandings. The common socio-political experience in Taiwan has gradually developed into a sense of Taiwanese cultural identity and a feeling of Taiwanese cultural awareness, which has been widely debated domestically. In recent years, the concept of Taiwanese multiculturalism has been proposed as a relatively apolitical alternative view, which has allowed for the inclusion of Mainlanders and other minority groups in the continuous redefining of Taiwanese culture as collectively held systems of meaning and customary patterns of thought and behavior shared by the people of Taiwan. Popular sports in Taiwan include: badminton, baseball, basketball, cheerleading, golf, martial arts, swimming, table tennis, tennis and volleyball. Taiwanese tea culture is a big part of life in Taiwan and it includes tea arts, the tea ceremony, and a very social way of enjoying tea. The most common teas are oolongs, such as Iron Goddess tea and Alpine Oolong tea. Many of the classical arts can be seen in the tea culture, for example, calligraphy, flower arts, incense arts, and so on. Karaoke is incredibly popular in Taiwan, where it is termed KTV (karaoke television). This is an example of something the Taiwanese have drawn, on scale, from contemporary Japanese culture. During typhoons, many young Taiwanese will spend the day singing karaoke. Boasting over 9,200 convenience stores in an area of 35,980 km² and a population of 22.9 million, Taiwan has Asia Pacific’s, and perhaps the world’s, highest density of convenience stores per person: one store per 2,500 people. Cell phones are also very popular in Taiwan. The mobile penetration rate stands at just over 82%. Because of their high use, phones in Taiwan have many functions and are becoming cheaper. Hip-hop culture from the United States also flourishes in Taiwan. You can get more information about Taiwan culture at: http://eng.taiwan.net.tw/

• Languages The written language, which is intelligible to speakers of all Sinitic tongues, is Chinese, and is the only pictograph-based writing system still in use on a large scale. While mainland China chose to adopt “simplified” characters in a bid to ameliorate the problem of widespread illiteracy, in Taiwan “traditional” written characters are still employed. Though the official spoken language of the ROC is Mandarin Chinese, large segments of the population also speak Hoklo (aka Taiwanese or “Tai-Yu” in Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan) or Hakka. • Climate Taiwan generally enjoys an oceanic and subtropical monsoon climate. The entire island experiences hot, humid weather from June through September. The average temperature during the cool, mild winters is 18˚C / 64˚F, while in the summer the average temperature rises to 31˚C / 88˚F. Taiwan’s annual weather patterns are strongly influenced by the East Asian monsoonal flow. The winter monsoon lasts from October to late March and brings continuous rain to Northeastern Taiwan, while the central and southern parts of the island experience mostly sunny winters. Many of Taiwan’s offshore islands are buffeted by powerful winds during this time. The summer monsoon begins with the “plum rain” in May and June and usually ends in late September. During this period, the South experiences high levels of precipitation while the North remains comparatively dry. Natural hazards such as typhoons from May to September and earthquakes are common in the region.
• Special Weather Condition and Earthquakes Although Taiwan is located in the subtropics, in winter, cold fronts from Siberia often drive temperatures to below 10 degrees Celsius and high mountainous areas even receive snow. In summer, however, due to the influence of the subtropical Pacific high-pressure system, temperatures frequently rise to 35 degrees Celsius and above. The island’s mercurial weather patterns are further complicated by Taiwan’s Central Mountain Range. Taiwan experiences relatively frequent seismic activity due to its location on the circum-Pacific seismic belt at the junction of the Manila and Ryukyu trenches along the west side of the Philippine Sea Plate (PSP). Geologists have identified a total of 42 active faults on the island. According to the Central Weather Bureau, from 1994 to 2011, about 22,000 earthquakes occurred annually in the Taiwan area, of which around 1,000 were felt by people each year. In Central and Western Taiwan, earthquakes are less frequent, of a smaller scale and with shallower focal depths. There was one exception to this, however, when on September 21, 1999, a major earthquake occurred near Jiji Township in Nantou County, about 150 kilometers south of Taipei, registering 7.3 on the Richter scale. It was the largest seismic event to affect Taiwan in the 20th century.

RISTEK-DIKTI Bridging Program Tunghai University Sondang Pondan Perlindungan Leoanak
It was three days before my arrival in Ilha Formosa, a beautiful island with its amazing high-rise gulf in the east of Asia. On this wonderful island, there lies Taiwan, a country with one of the best educational system in Asia. Nervous, scared, anxious, excited, all these feelings were scattered inside my mind, as this would be my destination to find the best advisor for my future study of a doctoral program. Yes, there would be three months for me as a Bridging Program participant and also as a research scholar candidate to give my best in order to get an acceptance letter, an approval letter to open the door for me to get into a desired program. My name is Sondang Pondan Perlindungan Leoanak, RISTEK-DIKTI Bridging Program Participant of The State Polytechnic of Agriculture Kupang. This is my story. The Bridging Program is a program initiated by The Ministry of Research Technology and Higher Education of Indonesia (RISTEK-DIKTI) and is in collaboration with The Ministry of Education of Taiwan represented by Elite Study in Taiwan (ESIT). The main purpose of this program is to facilitate, to connect and also to help the participants to meet the requirements of the selected universities in Taiwan, so we as participants could become the accepted doctoral candidates in those schools at the end. As we started this Bridging Program back in November 2016, at first I spent three days in Jakarta, studying what the people, the environment, and the education system are like in Taiwan that could be very different from my beautiful country Indonesia. I carried these questions in my mind along with my 5 hour flight from Jakarta to Taipei, and another 2 hours bus trip to get to Tunghai University. Tunghai University is a very attractive campus in Taichung city. The main feature of the campus is the Luce Chapel since Tunghai was founded as a private Christian university. It is also a historical site which is worthy to visit. Once we arrived at Tunghai, we were welcomed by several professors and the staff from school. They also gave us a wonderful reception which made me feel warm and comfortable. Their smile and hospitality served as answers to all the questions that I had carried during my journey to Taiwan. They provided a short introduction about the school which convinced me that there should not be anything for me to worry about for the next three months during this Bridging program. After a warm welcome given by the Tunghai staff, I was shown where my dormitory is which appears to be a cozy place, and everything that I need including hot water for bathing and drinking, convenience stores, food stalls, and canteens was all readily available to my use. Also, to my surprise, there is a fully equipped kitchen which is available for my use if I want to cook some homemade food at anytime. Therefore, it fulfills my yearning for some homemade Indonesian meals.

I would like to share some great memories that I have had with my six bridging program participants and friends since I arrived at Tunghai. One of them was a one-day tour to Sun Moon Lake which is located in central area of the western part of Taiwan. During the tour, we took a speedboat to see this beautiful lake, and we also went to the other side of the lake to see a live dancing and a singing performance presented by one aboriginal tribal group who live around the lake. We were amazed by their great performances, as their dance and song were very attractive and full of energy. After that, we had our lunch in a restaurant next to the performance area. The restaurant is nearby the lake and the meal served was very delicious. At the end of the tour, we had a chance to take a gondola ride, which is a 5-10 minutes cable-cart ride, so we got to see the fascinating scenery of the entire lake from above. Our jaws were dropped during this ride because of the beauty of the scenery. Another great experience provided by Tunghai University was an industrial visit to the Industrial Technology and Research Institute (ITRI) in the southern part of Taiwan. During this visit, we saw the process of making 3D printing, a future era of the world’s digital printing. Also, a process of making the 3D printing was clearly explained to us. We also had a chance to see the ITRI laboratory that keeps all of the materials and equipment used to design products and to make production trials for such printing. For me, this was a valuable experience as I could witness how the future printing process could be carried out in years to come with my naked eyes. I also noted one surprising thing about Taichung city and it is regarding the usage policy of the public transit system. The reason behind my surprising finding is the city government provides free public transportation to everyone who travels in the city including their local residents, citizens living from other cities, as well as foreign visitors of different countries. Such transportation policy offered by the local government is rarely found in other parts of the world. As a result of that, this allows me to take free bus rides to visit one shopping mall to another to find some valuable goods for my relatives back home. Some big shops such as Taisuko mall, Sogo mall, Feng-Chia night market, and Asean Square offer many options for me to choose various unique souvenirs for my family and friends in Indonesia. There was also one unforgettable moment that happened between me, one of the teachers in Tunghai University, and also my buddies. It happened on the first day of January 2017, New Year’s Day. Our English mentor and her husband invited us to their home for a New Year party celebration. We cooked Indonesian food like rendang beef, gado-gado salad and also soto soup with luat chili sauce. As most of Indonesian food is hot and spicy, so we cooked those meals with lots of chili and seasoning in order to present the authentic Indonesian flavor in this precious occasion. It took about 2 hours for us to prepare and serve all those dishes on the dinning table. The best moment happened was when we held our hands together as a group and every one had a chance to make our wish and hope for the New Year before eating. This precious moment carried on with many meaningful conversations and sharing of personal stories with each other. Lots of smiling and laughter were seen and heard among us from this wonderful gathering. This party lasted for about three hours and during the party I could see the fog spreading outside of the windows. This means that the temperature dropped and it must be very cold outside. However, we did not feel cold or chilly. I supposed that it is because this connection we had with one another like a family, naturally tied us together, and it enlightened a fire inside of us, then finally warmed up the room where the party was held. Feeling of being comforted and blessed were the words that represented how I felt during that night especially as I was away from home.

Those valuable experiences and memories that I have had from this Bridging program make me realize that the generosity of the people in Taiwan, especially the teachers and the staff in Tunghai University have brought those unforgettable moments to my life. Their kindness, generosity, and love have helped me to experience the winter’s warmth serenity found in a cold winter here in Taiwan, which will last forever in my heart. Before I end this story, please allow me to express my gratitude to RISTEK-DIKTI for this remarkable learning opportunity, so I could experience those amazing moments. I also would like to say “thank you” to ESIT and Tunghai University for these warm experiences that I had even in a cold winter. Thank you for letting me to experience not only the best moments in Tunghai campus, but also to other parts of Taiwan. I hope those valuable experiences will stay with me for an extended period of time in my life. I wish that I will return here again to relive another winter’s warm serenity as that was the wish I made at the New Year’s gathering.
Master of Business Administration Chung Gung Univerisity Ngo Thi Bich Phuong
Living in Taiwan for nearly 2 years, I find that this island is really a wonderful environment for international students to pursue their dreams. Let me introduce the academic environment and living condition here. Firstly, most Taiwanese Universities are large and well-equipped with the latest machines. The teaching staff have a high level of education, and many people have studied or worked abroad for a long time. For example, most of my Professors in CGU get their Master or Doctor Degree in US, UK, Canada or Europe. They had also worked in the famous enterprises all over the world, and that makes their lessons reach closer to reality. The student can choose their favourite lecturer and course by using an online system, which is clear and has an English version, too. From my point of view, the schedule is not really stressful, so most of students can have rest time to enjoy their life besides studying. Especially, in some universities such as Ming Chi University or Chang Gung University, you can have a chance to know about one of the largest international companies in the world: Formosa Plastic Group. There is a museum here, so you can enter with your friends and learn much about the history of the company. Despite the fact that the founder of Formosa, Mr. Wang Yung Ching, was born in a very poor family in Taipei, he and his younger brother can become great business men who make the name “Formosa” become a legend. In this museum, you don’t need to pay any fee to watch, even though it is really big with 6 beautiful floors. Throughout the floors from B1 to 6, the visitors can see the icon of Formosa, the family where Mr.Wang Yung Ching grew up, the products which are made from plastics, fibre, or cotton and even cosmetics from Dr. Formula. You also can see the figures of Formosa plants in Ha Tinh, Viet Nam and Texas, America. I actually appreciate the way that Formosa build their system and join in various fields because it is very difficult for everybody to manage everything well at the same time. In museum, you can also find the famous book “Wisdom of Wang Yung Ching”, which will answer most of the questions of business management from Founder Ching’s view. .

Secondly, not only the studying environment but also the living condition in Taiwan is very good for foreigners. There is a good relationship between Taiwanese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Indian and many other international students. In my campus, they also organize events so that the students can show their talents when they take part in: dancing, singing, drawing... and cooking traditional food. However, I think you need time to be aware that not all of the universities in Taiwan have this kind of activity. Actually, it is based on the number of international students there and the way the Chairman support the community. On another point, I would like to say that the international students must be very happy because of Taiwan’s living cost. It is really low so that you can buy food and many things even cheaper than in your country. Morever, Taiwan has a strong system of convinience stores like 7-Eleven, Family Mart, and Hi Life, with discounts for students. Transportation is easy to reach, and there is free bus from school to the city in Chang Gung. For students who want to travel or go to another place, they can choose to goby bus, MRT, or train, depending on their time and finances. I strongly recommend you to go to Taiwan both for studying and travelling. It is totally one of the most impactful countries in Asia nowadays
Master of School of Business, College of Management Chang Gung University Nguyen Thanh Tung
“Come and discover Taiwan, everything is great here” First and foremost, I would like to show my sincerest thanks to Elite Study in Taiwan for all the great support so that I can have the experience of studying and living in Taiwan. Applying for VEST-500 Scholarship for a Master’s Program in Taiwan was a great choice for me nearly 2 years ago. Particularly, joining the Master’s program in the School of Business of Chang Gung University (CGU) has not only educated me about managerial economics concepts, provided diverse, conductive, and truly international environment for learning but also allowed me to see real situations in various perspectives. In addition to studying in CGU, I am able to extend my personal network across borders, having made friends with many incredible people from all over the world. Through it all I absolutely enjoyed a great learning experience and being in an educationally and culturally diverse environment in my university. The well-designed curriculum regarding business and management and adequate resources for studying the fundamentals and theories of management were very well explained and taught by highly qualified, hardworking, supportive and inspirational professors. Specifically, all of our professors have designed teaching methodology in a very unique way by which we got to know real problems in management and we were asked to solve various case studies of all the major management concepts. Consequently, it ensures that upon graduation, every student including me is equipped with the critical thinking skills necessary and practical knowledge to gain exposure to different aspects of business and management skills which in turn help us to endure any future challenges.

Regarding living in Taiwan, I would like to admit that “If I had another chance, I would still choose Taiwan for my higher study”. Not only because Taiwan is a very peaceful and beautiful country but also it is the best place I have ever known to study and live. Typically, Taiwan’s capital (Taipei City) is the best city to study and live. I also know you can suspect the authenticity of what I just shared but the truth is that Taipei City provides a plethora of positives, many of the qualities that make the city a great place to study and live also make it a fantastic place to visit, even though you don’t need to live in Taipei to enjoy all it has to offer, such as: Life convenience: Taipei is really convenient Modern and efficient transport system: Buses, mass rapid transportation, cabs are extremely safe, reliable and convenient. Other public transport options are also efficient and affordable Safety: As a long-term resident of Taipei, I feel completely safe in Taipei Cheap living costs and there is also lots going on like live street music, famous night markets, convenience stores (Taiwan’s in general and Taipei’s in particular convenience store density tops the world and also are so awesome - they have everything you need), a diverse range of restaurants, museums and so on. In addition to Taipei City, the countryside outside the dynamic capital is filled with an amazing variety of the most beautiful and dramatic scenery. Having spent my last summer vacation backpacking Taiwan, I could go from tropical beaches and spectacular seaside, warms hot springs, and tranquil soul satisfying lakes in a short period of time. These experiences were so meaningful to me. It has helped me with many opportunities to communicate with Taiwanese people and I find it easy to become friends with them. Taiwanese people are extremely polite, friendly, helpful, and nice. Most Taiwanese are proud of their country, and they love to play the ambassador role to show people around. The farmers in the countryside are also extremely friendly. Furthermore, apart from the local delicacies, Taiwanese are pretty adventurous and creative with their food. There are many restaurants selling fusion food, infusing western elements into Asian food. There are also a good number of foreign restaurants selling non Taiwanese foods, be it Asian or Western. Another meaningful thing that I learned in Taiwan is that I am especially interested in how the Taiwan government gives benefits to the citizens. One of the most important aspects in life is the health care system. I noticed that all people including Taiwanese and foreigners have access to affordable health care spending as the hold the National Health Insurance. I have also seen how a good government is supposed to sustain the quality of life of citizens. I trust that in the six months remaining I will learn even more from the Taiwanese people and the media that will be a priceless study experience in Taiwan. But there is a notice about communication that although most Taiwanese people in Taipei can speak some English but I still find that communication can be quite difficult. Hence, to be honest I would recommend you learning some basic Mandarin if only to feel more connected to the community. In conclusion, I would like to say that Taiwan has given me a lot of valuable things to take home: knowledge, behavior, discipline and sweet unforgettable memories. I also suppose that a two-year course is enough for international students to complete Master’s Program by their own efforts and professors’ great supports. But it seems never long enough to profoundly understand the beauty of Taiwanese culture, nature, and people. Taiwan is always full of wonderful things waiting for you to find out. Study hard and don’t forget to enjoy your time in Taiwan. I strongly believe that you will enjoy immersing yourself in study and life and have invaluable life experiences like me. Thank you so much and wishing you success in your studies!

My name is Dang Trang Thanh Nha but my friends call me Hana. I am a candidate for the Mekong 1000 project: a human resource development in the Mekong Delta project in Vietnam. Currently, I am a master student in the GMBA program at Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology (STUST) and in my second semester. Before coming to Taiwan, I really did not know how Taiwan is and I did not think I would love it immediately. One year ago after the enthusiastic assistance of the ESIT office, I came to Taiwan for the first time. I was also helped by the ESIT staff in the airport with all their respect and ardor. Currently, after finishing two out of four semesters at STUST, I can being to realize the enthusiasm of most of professors at my school, and generally in Taiwan. They always find the best way to attract students for their lesson that it is not only about the theory but also helpful for my job in the future. The physical facilities are very convenient and useful for students to use or to track with their lesson in class. Besides that, the living environment in Taiwan is very convenient. In fact, I have lived in the dormitory and eat out side every day. At first, I thought I would have many troubles when living in a different language and culture as Taiwan. However, because of the enthusiasm of Taiwanese students and people living around the school, it was possible to overcome these problem. Moreover, at STUST, my school, before officially studying, each international student was assigned at least one Taiwanese guide, to help them become familiar with living in Taiwan with some activities like: shopping for necessary items, introducing some famous places near the school, and eating a few traditional foods. These small gestures are what helped most of the oversea students like me to adapt to the new environment quickly. I really appreciated these actions. On the other hand, besides studying in school, I am in love with travel and discovery new things, especially in a beautiful and peaceful country like this. Amazingly, there are a lot of famous places such as Tamsui, Jiufen, Rao-He night market, and Shifen, When I travel, it is not quite difficult to go or find my way because the MRT transportation system is quite cheap, fast and very convenient. Even though, many Taiwanese could not speak English very well, when I travel and speak with Taiwanese, they still can understand what I am talking about and help me immediately. Honestly, it is not excessive to say that Taiwan is a country who is kind and passionate. Overall, in my opinion, Taiwan is a country for life and study. Actually, I think it was a suitable decision for me to choose Taiwan as a country for studying and having an interesting experience. Up to now, I really love Taiwan and I would enjoy my student life in here. If I have a chance, I really want to stay here longer in order to learn more about Taiwan and its people, honestly.

Taiwan??? Maybe this is something that I never imagined before. Most people would think that Taiwan is ! only a small island, and what can they get from Taiwan? At first, I thought the same as others. I think Taiwan is only a small island, much smaller than Indonesia, where I was raised. First I was offered to join “the Bridging Program, a cooperation between Indonesia and Taiwan, but I immediately refused. At that time I was still waiting to hear back about my applications to two major campuses in the United Kingdom. My second bid to study in Taiwan came again in 2012 after I was forced by my dean to participate in this program, because I've met the qualification requirements to study in Taiwan (I am a lecturer at the State University of Padang); with a heavy heart, I went to Taiwan to attend the Bridging program for 2.5 months. I joined the program because in my mind this is a golden opportunity for me to be able to walk free to Taiwan. I am stationed at the National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences with computer science as my background. Starting from the moment I set my foot in the International Airport of Kaohsiung, until I was placed in the dormitory, I started thinking that Taiwan is not as bad as I had thought. During my days in Taiwan, my friends and I were introduced to the environment of Taiwan, which at the first time it was very hard to adapt to, because almost no one can use the English language and I always use body language to communicate with people. During Bridging program, I was also brought to the existing industrial factory in Kaohsiung, and it was very interesting to me. Technology developed in Taiwan has advanced rapidly; this is an added value for me to be able to continue my studies here. My activity in Kaohsiung for 2.5 months was filled not only with study, but I was invited to see the whole Taiwan. My friends and I were invited to see the 101 building, located in Taipei. One word for the 101 building is amazing. The 101 Building is a trade mark of Taiwan and it was very memorable for me. I always said to my friends who will come to Taiwan, it is not complete without coming and visit the 101 building and also Formosa Boulevard in Kaohsiung. Time ran out fast and, I had to return to Indonesia. But my desire to return to Taiwan increased every day. I immediately signed a scholarship to be able to return to Taiwan. I'm happy; I do not struggle in vain. I can go back to Taiwan, precisely to Kaohsiung. Now I almost have finished my 4 (four) years in Taiwan. But that is not enough for me. I feel there is still a lot of things that I can learn from Taiwan. I want to get more science and the latest technology so that I can apply it in my country.

As a student at National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences (NKUAS), I can get a lot of opportunities to develop my skills. Such as being a volunteer at some schools in Taiwan. In that event, I introduced some of Indonesia’s culture. I’m happy to share my experience with Taiwanese students. I am proud to be an Indonesian and I am proud that I can continue my study in Taiwan. Although we Indonesians are still a minority here, I am sure that one day Indonesian students will increase. I'm proud to be a person who can study in Taiwan. I want to say thank you for ESIT because it has already given good attention to Indonesian students in who study in Taiwan. I love Taiwan.
Doctoral Program of Electrical Engineering Southern Taiwan University of Science and Technology Ika Noer Syamsiana
I am Ika Noer Syamsiana, I currently work as a Lecture of Electrical Engineering in State Polytechnic of Malang, Indonesia. I am a Ph.D student who is fully funded by Indonesia DIKTI with 3+1 scheme scholarship. In 2013, for the second time I went to Taiwan to attend a Batch I bridging degree. But this time was different because I started a new thing that I had never imagined before that is, take on S-3 abroad. Studying in Taiwan is different than study in other countries. There is a reason why I chose Taiwan as the place for study: I wanted to study in Taiwan because Taiwan is a country that has given birth to many brand new technologies such as Acer and Asus, and has many competent professors in their fields, have published many papers, has comfortable weather, and has hospitable local people. For Muslims who live here, Taiwan gives freedom and facilitation to carry out worship and many other good things. Based on my experiences, every S-3 student who are studying in Taiwan will be given a course for a year. That course is aimed that the students are able to successfully pass the qualifying examination, a determination examination to become a doctorate candidate. STUST lecturers are competent in their fields and all course materials are delivered in English. But when there are local students taking the same class as international students, in order that all students in the class have the same education, the lecture is given in two languages: English and Chinese. During my study, I have gotten a lot of things. From the opportunity to become as teaching assistant, to learning how to communicate with local students, to having experiences in doing daily laboratory work with student colleagues, to teaching Packet A program to Indonesian workers under KDEI and many other fruitful things.

Certainly all friends cannot imagine how we, Muslem students, can live and survive here. When we came at the first time, and we introduced ourselves as Muslems, the local people, food sellers around the university, class and laboratory colleagues apprehended the kinds of food which we can eat and we cannot. Therefore, every time there is a big meal invitation they will tell to us not to touch the food which is categorized as haram food. But for daily life, I buy food around the campus which is safe to be eaten such as seafood and vegetarian dishes. Sometimes I cook at the kitchen provided by the dormitory. Fortunately, I live in the campus dormitory. Why? Because the cost is affordable, the facility is available and complete. The campus dormitory provides room for an individual, two, three, or four students to share the space. I choose a room which is shared with three other students. There are diverse types of students who share the room with me and they come from diverse countries. I have been with students from Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, Mongolia, Swaziland, the United States, and Indonesia. It is a rare chance to share a room with them along with their own characters and cultures. There is an awesome and interesting thing happened to me when studying in Taiwan. STUST is one of the universities which is given authority to manage a host-family program. I am lucky because I have gotten a chance to have a parent here because of this program. I have joined this program since the Bridging degree until now. My Taiwan parent is very kind and regards me as their own daughter. Everytime they have a family agenda, they invite me to come and join them. And last but not the least, for me Taiwan is one of the most prospective countries for study destination.

Master of International Business National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences Muhammad Ghalih
When I was in my bachelor degree, I had the plan to go abroad, especially in Taiwan to continue my study, and I think it is the best way to go there. As a student of International Business, I personally believe if I continue my study in Taiwan I can enrich my knowledge and experience about business. In the beginning, I have learned Mandarin by myself, and I believe that by learning and understanding Mandarin, it will make it easier to interact and communicate there. By listening to the story of my friends that have ever studied there, it burns my desire and cannot wait to go to Formosa sooner. Besides that, I think Taiwan is the best country for the student because living costs are inexpensive, and transportation is good for the student. Finally, here I am in Kaohsiung which is located in southern Taiwan. I continue my study at National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences in the Department of International Business. I got a scholarship from the Indonesian government which called BPP-LN from the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education. This is a special scholarship for candidate Lecturers in polytechnic or vocational schools. So after I finish my study I will become a lecturer in one of the polytechnics in Indonesia which is located in South Kalimantan. Nowadays I spend my time exploring Taiwan through my study. In class, I felt lucky because I am the one and only student from Indonesia so my classmates always help me when I cannot understand anything. Even several of my friends give me additional classes to learn about Mandarin with “Bopomofo”. Bopomofo is like the alphabet in Traditional Chinese but I learned by Pīnyīn so it is difficult for me to recognize a sound, and sometimes I use the wrong tone, and it results in a different meaning. I think most Taiwanese are very kind and friendly with foreigners; they have a curiosity about anything which is good. It was just the beginning of a long journey that will begin this winter vacation because I am not going back to Indonesia so that I can join a volunteer program and I have a plan to go around Taiwan and some of my friends tell me that they will be happy to become my tour guide. I will start my journey by exploring Taiwan culture, cuisine, and tourism. I hope that during my vacation I can find some ideas to enrich my horizon. I also have a plan to buy a scooter to make my mobility easier. If I do, it can allow me to enjoy life in Taiwan more because I will be able to anywhere. I do not want to waste my time here only for study and get a higher grade, but I will get more because Indonesia needs human resources which can face the global competition, and I am ready to compete with other students to learn in Taiwan and bring the name of Indonesia to the international level. I will try hard to catch my dream to improve myself by keeping at studying because I should help and give a more positive contribution for other people, especially for Indonesian society. Come join me to study in Taiwan!!

Study in Taiwan?
Scholarships Various government agencies and the ESIT Consortium Universities offer scholarships to international students. The major scholarship programs are as follows:
4.1 Taiwan Scholarship
4
Commencing from 2004, two government agencies of Taiwan: the Ministry of Education (MOE), Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), Huayu Enrichment Scholarship (HES), jointly established the Taiwan Scholarship Program to encourage outstanding international students to undertake degree programs in Taiwan.
Huayu (Mandarin) Enrichment Scholarship (HES)
This scholarship aims to enhance exchanges between the Republic of China (Taiwan) and countries designated by the MOE by encouraging foreign students to study Mandarin in Taiwan and gain a deeper understanding of Taiwan's cultural and social developments. • Scholarships for Huayu Enrichment courses will include a summer term (June and July or July and August), along with short term classes, which may last 3, 6 or 9 months to a year respectively. • A Monthly stipend of 25,000 NTD (about 834 USD).
MOE Taiwan Scholarship The MOE Taiwan Scholarship continues to encourage outstanding students to pursue academic degrees in Taiwan and deepen their understanding of Taiwan's academic environment, thereby enhancing exchanges and building friendships between Taiwan and the nations of participants. (1) Scholarships for Degrees : Bachelor’s, Master’s, Doctoral. (2) Tuition and payment of academic fees, including credit fees. Upon validation of tuition and the above mentioned fees, the MOE awards each recipient up to 40,000 NTD per semester. • Subsistence allowance: The MOE offers each recipient undertaking undergraduate studies a monthly stipend of 15,000 NTD (about 500 USD); it offers each recipient undertaking postgraduate studies a monthly stipend of 20,000 NTD (about 667 USD)
Why
Study in Taiwan ?
Scholarships of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) The MOFA Taiwan Scholarship continues to encourage outstanding students to pursue academic degrees in Taiwan and to deepen their understanding of Taiwan's academic environment, thereby enhancing exchanges and building friendships between Taiwan and the nations of participants. The MOFA Taiwan Scholarship is, in principle, granted to students from countries that have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. However, special consideration may also be given to students from other countries. (1) Scholarships avaliable for: Pre-degree LEP, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral Degrees. (2)Scholarship recipients will be given a monthly stipend of 25,000 NTD (about 834 USD)for the LEP and 30,000 NTD (about 1000 USD) for degree programs, plus one direct round-trip, economy-class ticket for direct flights to and from Taiwan. For more details please visit- www.esit.org.tw/scholarship.php
4.2 Southern Sunshine Scholarship (SSS) Programs The Southern Sunshine Scholarship (SSS) program is a joint initiative by the ESIT Project Office and the participating ESIT Consortium Universities. It caters to candidates from Southeast and South Asian regions who are keen to pursue advanced degrees in Taiwan. The ESIT Consortium Universities provide English-instructed programs of study in various disciplines and offer tuition-waiver or scholarships to qualified candidates.
4.3 Scholarship Opportunities from the ESIT Consortium Universities The ESIT Consortium Universities provide many scholarship opportunities and high quality English-instructed programs to international students. Further information about the scholarship opportunities is available at the ESIT website, located at http://www.esit.org.tw

Living in Taiwan 5.1 Student Unions in Taiwan

The Indonesian Student Association in Taiwan, also known as PPI (Perhimpunan Pelajar Indonesia Taiwan), was established by the Indonesian Student Association in Taiwan. PPI declared its formation on May 2, 2010, on National Education Day at the Holistic Building of Chung Yuan Christian University in Chungli, Taiwan. The Charter declaration was signed by the head of KDEI (Indonesian Economic and Trade Office) in Taiwan. Mr. Iman Adi Purnama is the Chairman of PPI Taiwan. Indonesian Student Association: Website: http://www.ppitaiwan.org Email: info@ppitaiwan.org Thailand Students Association: Thai Students Association in Taiwan (TSAT) assists students to look for opportunities to travel and study abroad in Taiwan. TSAT aims to promote Mandarin and Taiwanese culture, and offers counseling services regarding Taiwanese education. Facebook Link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TSAT.info/

Why
Study in Taiwan ?
5.3 Services Insurance With the development of the social economy and implementation of the National Health Insurance (NHI), Taiwan's medical standards and quality of healthcare have been upgraded significantly. Foreigners in Taiwan are also able to enjoy these high quality medical services. Foreigners with an Alien Resident Certificate who have resided in Taiwan for four months must enroll in the National Health Insurance program. This is done at the local administrative office. Before they are eligible for the NHI program, students can either purchase their own insurance coverage or participate in a temporary health insurance program offered by the foreign students’ office located within their campuses. When traveling overseas for a short period of time, either on business or on vacation, with plans of returning to Taiwan with a valid ARC, foreigners must remain enrolled in the NHI program. Bank Account Most banks offer foreign currency exchange and banking services in NT dollars. Foreign students can open bank accounts with their passports and ARC cards. Individuals who wish to open an account without an ARC card have to obtain a universal identification number at the local police office. Postage Chunghwa Post, the postal service of Taiwan, provides international and domestic mail services to the public. There are over a thousand branches all over the island, providing both regular and express postal services. International students can apply for a postal box at the nearest branch. Students who receive a Taiwan Scholarship need to open an account at a post office of Chunghwa Post. In addition, most convenience stores serve as pick-up locations for international and domestic express services. Exchange Rate and Living Costs The exchange rate for Taiwan is about 32.10 NT dollars per 1 US dollar. It generally fluctuates in the 32-33 range. You can find the exact daily rate for any currency from the Bank of Taiwan website at: http://www.bot.com.tw/english/Pages/default.aspx As the standard of living in Taiwan improves, the cost of living also rises on the island. Although it is still lower than many Asian countries, most imported goods and many types of services in Taiwan can be expensive. If you 'go local' and eat at food stalls and noodle stands, your expenses should not exceed 300 NTD a day. On the other hand, you can spend a lot more if you decide to go to fancy restaurants. Many universities provide international students with inexpensive or free dormitories as part of the scholarship package. For food and other expenditures, the cost could range from 6,000 NTD to 12,000 NTD per month depending on the area of residence.

5.4 Transportation By Air
There are six domestic airlines providing services between major cities such as Taipei, Taichung, Tainan, Kaohsiung and Hualien. Prior reservations are always required.
By Train
• Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) If you would like to save time, THSR is another choice. While traveling from Taipei to Kaohsiung takes 5 hours by train and 6 hours by car, the THSR takes only 1.5 hours. Advanced reservations are recommended. • Train The railway network along the coastline is another economic option for traveling around Taiwan. There are four classes of passenger seats: Tze-chiang, Chu-kuang, Fu-hsing and Local. Traveling by train is recommended on public holidays because, that way, the hustle and bustle of the long distance highway bus services can be avoided. Advanced ticket reservations are recommended. • Metro/Subway In Taipei and Kaohsiung, the metro system (MRT) provides convenient and comfortable transportation. There are eight major routes in Taipei and two major routes in Kaohsiung, covering different parts of the two cities. Metro fares range from 20-60 NTD (0.6-2 USD). By Highway Bus Long distance highway bus services provided by private transportation companies are very popular. They have an extensive network and a frequent service schedule. Tickets are usually competitively priced and some bus companies even provide 24 hour service. By Motorcycle/Scooter and Bicycle Motorcycles and scooters are popular means of transportation. Most universities provide motorcycle/scooter parking around campus for students, and for more information on obtaining a driver’s license in Taiwan, please visit the website ( https://tpcmv.thb.gov.tw/English/ ). Bicycles are widely used within campuses. Bicycle racks can be found throughout campuses as well. By Bus and Taxi Each major city has its own bus system. Fares are inexpensive and service is frequent. Taxi fares start at 70 NTD (2.3 USD) and increase with the time and distance traveled. It is a good idea to have the name of your hotel or address written in Chinese when you travel by taxi. The ride-sharing app “Uber” is also available in Taiwan and it can be helpful if you are unable to speak Chinese or communicate your destination with a taxi driver. By Passenger Car In Taiwan, cars are driven on the right. Students with international driver’s licenses may drive in Taiwan. However, driving is not recommended for those who are unfamiliar with the unique road and traffic conditions in Taiwan. Traffic is heavy and drivers must watch out for pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcycles and scooters, as well as other road users. Drivers have to be extremely cautious on the road. International or foreign driver’s license holders can apply for ROC driver licenses at the local Motor Vehicles Office.

5.5 Employment
Study in Taiwan ?
JOB
Foreign students who have studied in a school for two semesters or in a language program for one year, and have an excellent scholastic record, can apply to work in Taiwan under one of the following circumstances:
• Events of a serious nature have affected their financial ability to support themselves or continue their education and the student can provide evidence of such circumstances. • An academic research institution at the student's school requires a foreign student to provide assistance in its work. • The student needs to take part in an off-campus internship related to his or her field of study. For foreign students with proficiency in a special language, the Ministry of Education may, on a case-by-case basis, give its approval for such students, following their enrollment, to take employment as instructors at language institutes affiliated with universities, colleges, or junior colleges, or at language institutes affiliated with foreign cultural and educational organizations in Taiwan. • Application for a work permit Foreign students who wish to work in Taiwan must hold a valid work permit. With the exception of summer and winter vacations, students with work permits may work a maximum of 16 hours per week while the work permit is valid. The maximum duration of a work permit for foreign students, overseas Chinese students, and ethnic Chinese students is 6 months. A new work permit shall be applied for after expiration. Students can apply for work permits at the Council of Labor Affairs or at each school’s Office of Student Affairs. Students may also apply for work permits at the Council of Labor Affairs by mail. Application forms can be downloaded from the Bureau of Employment and Vocational Training (BEVT). The processing time is usually about 7-10 working days. For other questions concerning work permit, please visit the BEVT website. • Employment Service Center, Taipei City Bureau Of Labor Affairs • Department of Labor, Taipei City Government • Taichung Region Employment Service Center (TRESC) To obtain information on work permits, please visit the Office of Student Affairs at your school or the Council of Labor Affairs at: https://english.mol.gov.tw/. It usually takes five working days to issue a work permit. Application forms can be downloaded from the Bureau of Employment and Vocational Training at: http://www.wda.gov.tw/en/index.jsp

Before you leave your home country for Taiwan, you will need to apply for a visa at your local Taiwanese Consulate. You will be required to bring along the following items with you to apply for your VISA: • Letter of Acceptance from your university • Valid passport • 2 passport sized photographs • An application processing fee (varies country to country) • A statement showing that you have enough funds
We suggest you first call your local Taiwanese Consulate and inform them on the specifics of your intended trip to Taiwan for study and ask them about what documents are required for the VISA application. You should apply for a residence visa although sometimes a tourist visa is issued for first entry to Taiwan.
6.2 Before Your Arrival SOnce your confirmation of enrolment comes through and you’ve secured your student visa, it’s time to start thinking of some of the practicalities of travelling to Taiwan. • It’s worth packing a few mementos from home that will give you some comfort when you’re missing your friends and family, but keep in mind that most airlines have a check-in baggage restriction of about 20kg (about 44lb). • The type of clothing you should bring with you depends on which part of the country you will be living in, and the time of year you arrive. The Taiwanese fall coincides with the first academic semester in September, which is when most international students arrive. This means that you can probably get by with jeans, T-shirts and light jackets. If you arrive in time for the second academic semester by mid-February, you’ll need to pack some warm sweaters, long-sleeved T-shirts and a coat to cope with the winter. • You should bring some formal wear as well as traditional clothing from your culture for special occasions. • You can bring your MP3 player along for the journey, and mobile phone and other electronic equipment, but make sure to get power adaptors suitable for use in Taiwan so you can charge them. • Many international students bring some pre-packaged food from home in their luggage. • You should also try to find a place for photocopies of all your important documents: passport, visa, flight tickets, insurance documents, credit cards, ATM cards and your admission letter. • Make sure you also leave copies of all these documents with someone at home in case you lose the originals. • You should also bring enough Taiwan currency in cash for your first few days. It is probably better to change money at the airport on arrival in terms of its convenience and better exchange rates. Normally, credit cards are widely accepted at major hotels, resorts, shops and restaurants.
