Welcome to the spring/summer 2024 edition of our program and event guide.
Welcome to the Summer 2024 edition of our Parks and Recreation Active Living Guide. This guide will help you find out more about our high-quality programs. You’ll love what we have planned for the community!
The 6000 sq. ft Gorge Park Pavilion is a spectacular space for community gathering with additional programming like art and yoga classes being held there, as well as renting the building for events. It has become a jewel of our community, not only for the expanded programming space, but also for the beauty and history of the building architecture and the ambience created by the surrounding Japanese Gardens.
Outdoor activities and celebrations will be in full swing with the return of Music in the Park, Bard Across the Bridge, Petapalooza, the Victoria International Jazzfest and so many other outdoor activities for everyone in our community. The Township is known for hosting these community events and activities, and it is heartwarming to see everyone come back out to support them again.
Esquimalt Recreation also offers a wide variety of programs with interests in fitness, sports, music, dance, board games, cards, recreational art, fitness, leadership, drop-in classes, Specialty Summer Camps and so much more!
Did you also know we are also always looking for keen people who might have an interest in becoming a Lifeguard or Swim Lesson Instructor? Courses are offered from the Lifesaving Society and Red Cross that can be a terrific way to add to a growing resume or be a great way to keep your “feet wet” in the workforce instead of settling into retirement! Esquimalt Recreation embodies a holistic approach to health & wellness, offers flexibility AND also lets you work in a supportive team environment. Ask at our Front Reception about this as an exciting (and very flexible) employment option.
There are so many programs, activities, and special events that are happening in Esquimalt at our Recreation Centre, Sports Centre, and the Gorge Park Pavilion. There are also community-wide events like the Neighbourhood Party in June, Stories in the Park and Music in the Park that are returning favourites. We have an abundance of program opportunities to take advantage of – no matter what your interest is!
On behalf of Council, I encourage everyone to take advantage of the wealth of opportunities and activities available through our Parks and Recreation Department this summer!

Kokedama allows gardeners to turn plants into living sculptures. It’s a style of Japanese bonsai that means “moss ball.” As you might expect, creating a kokedama garden involves encasing a plant’s root system in sphagnum moss to create a ball, which makes an elegant, natural, versatile garden arrangement when hung. It’s a simple, rewarding project for beginners and advanced gardeners. Participants will create 3 kokedama plants each. The total registration fee is $40 including the required material fee.
