MAYOR’S MESSAGE

Welcome to the Winter/Spring 2025 edition of our Parks and Recreation Active Living Guide.

Inside, you’ll discover a wealth of high-quality programs we’re excited to bring you in the new year.

Esquimalt offers a rich array of leisure and recreation opportunities, and this Active Living Guide is packed with something for everyone. Start the New Year with Esquimalt’s Mayor and Council on a historical walk through Esquimalt Gorge Park. Led by author Dennis Minaker, this relaxed stroll reveals the vibrant history of the Gorge Park and its waterways from a century ago. The walk begins and ends at the Esquimalt Gorge Pavilion, and while the event is free, preregistration is required.

Have you tried Pickleball yet? Canada now boasts an estimated 1.4 million “Picklers,” with more joining every year. Pickleball, blending elements of tennis, badminton, and ping pong, has been so popular that we’re introducing a new “Pickle Fit” class. Designed for fitness enthusiasts and players alike, this class will support you in staying active and strong for Pickleball and other racquet sports.

This April don’t miss the annual Esquimalt 5K and Kids Fun Run—a true showcase of community spirit and family-friendly fitness! If you haven’t joined in yet, make this the year to experience this fantastic local event! They are always looking for volunteers for this event as well!

From outdoor adventures to indoor programs, our Winter/ Spring lineup has plenty for everyone. For cozy indoor fun, check out our Social Saturday Series held once a month throughout the season. One highlight is our Wine & Paint Night, where you’ll be guided through a creative painting session while enjoying a refreshing glass of wine.

Esquimalt Recreation takes a holistic approach to health and wellness, offering diverse programs for all interests. Whether it’s special events, exciting activities, or fitness programs, you’ll find something that’s perfect for you at our Recreation Centre, Sports Centre, and the Gorge Park Pavilion. It’s all about family fun and well-being here.

On behalf of Esquimalt Council, I encourage you to explore our beautiful parks and take advantage of the exceptional recreation programs and facilities available to you. Enjoy a wonderful season of active living!

Framing Watercolour

Without Glass - How To Traditional framing of watercolours is expensive and creates issues with shipping. An alternative is to mount the completed watercolour on a wooden cradle and then finish the surface with varnish or an equivalent. The painting can then be hung without a frame (on a deep cradle) or framed without a mat or glass. The result is attractive and it keeps costs down substantially as framing costs can be reduced or even eliminated. In this demo we will go over the steps involved in fastening the watercolour to the wooden cradle, trimming the piece to match the size of the wooden panel, and protecting the surface using either cold wax, or varnish. Options for finishing the sides of the cradle will also be discussed. Come prepared with all your questions about the process!

Aging Backwards Intro

This exceptional class is designed to enhance understanding of body mechanics and the nuances of movement cues. By increasing awareness of spatial orientation and body control, participants can achieve more effective results from any fitness regimen. The class focuses on several key areas such as learning to distinguish between proper spinal movements and compensatory patterns; discover techniques for better leg alignment that contribute to stronger hips and knees, enhancing stability and preventing injuries; understand how to activate the core effectively to reduce unnecessary strain on the neck and improve overall posture and support; explore how proper breathing techniques can enhance range of motion.

Specifically, the Aging Backwards program integrates Tai Chi principles, focusing on movements that promote balance, weight shifting, control, and flow. This approach not only fosters a sense of well-being and anti-aging but also aids in fall prevention. By breaking down these movements, participants will increase range of motion and gain valuable skills for maintaining physical stability and grace.

Aging Backward

Discover the key to slowing down the aging process by enhancing body awareness and mechanics in this transformative class. Our approach focuses on balancing musculature and soothing the body, helping release tension in areas such as the hips, lower back, calves, and chest. Simultaneously, participants will strengthen legs, abs, and arms without falling into compensatory patterns.

Experience improved breathing mechanics and postural alignment, which lead to better control and a more natural range of motion. The class is conducted at a slow, continuous pace to help participants adapt to new movement patterns and avoid discomfort.

For those new to Aging Backwards or interested in a deeper understanding of the movement blocks within the class, it is recommended to register for the Aging Backwards Intro class. This introductory session breaks down the techniques to help you build strength and enhance your range of motion effectively.

Looking into the Mirror of Dharma

When we look into a mirror, what do we see? Do we see a reflection of only our “outer” life, or can we possibly catch glimpses of our full potential? Dharma, the meaning of Buddha’s teachings, can help us understand our experience of this life through the practice of meditation.

Postural Pilates

Enhance the efficiency of posture and movement with Postural Pilates, a comprehensive approach that integrates Pilates principles with neuromuscular programming. This class is designed to address the underlying issues that can inhibit strength and contribute to inefficient movement patterns. Abdominal muscles are best engaged when they are integrated with the whole body to increase full body energy and vitality. When exercise is layered into a poor pattern of movement, more pain and dysfunction follow. Postural Pilates addresses unique patterns and teaches the body control required to live in a body that performs with ease, strength, and grace.
