’ll be honest, all that ‘what happens in Vegas’ business has always been something that has left me somewhat perplexed. What does it really mean? When it comes to stag do’s, you cannot honestly believe your man would be physically cheating on you? He’s probably been with you so long, he’s forgotten how to attract the opposite sex. Believe it or not, most men are pretty loyal to their loved one, and anyone who is not is by no means seen as ‘cool’ or a ‘lad’. If your man truly cannot be trusted – perhaps it is time to move on. He certainly doesn’t sound like marriage material. Whilst it may not be the nicest image, the phrase can refer to any number of things – excessive drinking, garish behaviour or gambling, for instance. Infidelity doesn’t have to come into the equation. They might not be things that appeal to you, but a stag do is a once in a lifetime experience. What harm is it really doing? I’d say ‘good on him’ for getting it out of his system. Moral of the story? If you really trust your man, let him go on his lads’ holiday or stag do – treat yourself to a day at the spa with the girls at the same time, if you like. On the other hand, if you really cannot trust him, perhaps it is time to consider where your relationship is going.

adies, how many times have we all heard the saying ‘what happens in Vegas?’ Well what does happen in Vegas? What is the big secrecy surrounding these salacious holidays? I think we all know. We have all seen the horror shows such as Magaluf Weekender. The problem is they want their devoted partner to sit at home, while they can go out and act single. Since when has it been ok to put up with such rubbish? They are only going abroad because they think it is a large enough distance to get away with it. They know they are doing things they know they shouldn’t. Why are so many men starting a loving relationship, only to then want to act like a single person? You can’t have it both; it’s one or the other. Now I am not saying that you should live in each other’s pockets. But you shouldn’t live completely separate either. You’re either a partnership or an individual. Stag do’s are different, obviously it is one for the boys. But why do they seem to think that it gives them carte blanche to act as they like. Boys would not like same sex holidays either. They would sit at home and wonder why you are together, yet acting separately. Why not share the good times together, or secrets and lies might be the only company you are left with.

ife can be stressful at the best of times but never more so than when you in the midst of planning your Big Day. Trying to prioritise can be difficult but do remember that when your honeymoon tan fades, the only physical sign that you are married are the rings that you wear. Choosing your wedding rings is not an easy task but following these easy tips may help you survive without killing each other. Lance James The Jewellers has access to thousands of different wedding ring designs and choosing can be overwhelming. Be honest with your jeweller about your budget – it will really help in the long run. It is advisable to match the metal with your engagement ring to avoid potential wear and tear. Although some materials are harder than

others, be aware that all metals will scratch with time – even platinum is not scratch-proof! There are many new materials you can choose from including palladium and carbon. You can personalise your rings by engraving a secret love message inside or even have a “secret” diamond set inside. Trust your jeweller - seek advice on the sizing of your rings, especially the Groom’s. If you are not used to wearing rings, it is very tempting to choose a size too big and then it’s lost before the honeymoon is over! Finally, don’t leave choosing your rings to the last minute. Every ring is made to order and if you are short of time, you will also be short of options. Ideally, you need to order at least 6 weeks before the big day … and then try not to lose weight or put it on!!

WHEN YOU WEAR A RING EVERY DAY, DON’T SETTLE FOR AN EVERYDAY RING… For help and advice you can trust, why not book an appointment at one of the Lance James Wedding Ring events at our stores during April.

• How did you get into photography?

After university I was fortunate enough to work at a publishing company, surrounded by beautiful images. It was impossible not to be inspired by them. As all photographers know- you will do anything to avoid missing out on a once in a lifetime shot! So this is really why my passion began.

Erica Hawkins

Photographer Erica Hawkins, 32, from North London made time in her busy schedule to talk to Ivana Sidey. Read on to discover how you can turn your passion into a business and ensure you always take great pictures, whether you’re in front of the camera or behind the lens. • What were the couple like?

• How did you turn your passion into a business?

I thought Nikki and Nathan were a genuine, fun and happy couple who clearly loved each other. It was strange to see Nathan portrayed as a straight-laced historian as he didn’t come across like that in person. Therefore, I found myself getting a little protective, almost wanting the film crew to just leave them alone so they could enjoy their special day.

• You were also the photographer for the hit BBC Three Series, Don’t Tell the Bride - What was the day like?

• So after all your experience, what do you think makes a beautiful wedding photo?

I was lucky enough to have friends who let me shoot their wedding. Even now, they still thank me for the images. Most of my clients have come to me through recommendations and I can’t explain what a great feeling that is.

It was non-stop, like most weddings. I’m quite a discreet photographer, so I blended into the background as much as possible, while avoiding the camera crew!

• How can a bride/groom pose to look her best? Try to relax! If you are enjoying your wedding day then your photographer will capture that. If you are uncomfortable when the photos are being taken it will show.

Reportage photography is all about documenting your day in a natural manner. To me a great wedding photo is one that captures moments and instinctively portrays the emotions of the day.

Complimentary engagement shoot with every wedding booking.

Darren Kennedy Sometimes it can be difficult trying to stay ‘on trend’ and choose a wedding dress that compliments your body shape. Presenter & stylist Darren Kennedy shares some of his favourite styles from this season and how to make them work for you.

T

FISHTAIL PUFFBALL

he catwalks might have moved on to AutumnWinter trends for 2013 but that’s not much good to you if you’re getting married over the next few months. If you haven’t decided on your wedding dress (or are thinking of chucking the one you impulse bought six months ago and going for a different style!) now is a good time to take a look at current trends and decide how you can add some of your own personality and individuality to your wedding day look. If the big day is fast-looming and you’re still on the hunt for the perfect bridal gown, the good news is that current wedding fashion trends are really diverse. You can have a weddinggown style based on pretty much any era of fashion and still be extremely fashionable right now. How you wear it will make all the difference.

Modern brides who want the best of a full-skirted dress with a sleek look will be after the fishtail style. This is a tight-fitting dress that flares out at the bottom. The fishtail, or mermaid style as it is sometimes referred to, is reminiscent of wedding gowns from the 1950’s and screams Hollywood glamour. Think Audrey Hepburn at the races in My Fair Lady – an extremely tight-fitting fishtail style gown. What’s great about the Fifties influence is it was a period where the hour-glass shape was celebrated in all its glory. A fishtail style wedding dress is perfect for curvy girls with a fuller figure, heavier on top or broad shouldered, as it adds balance to the silhouette and draws the attention of the eye down to the ‘tail’. A softly shaped skirt that skims over the hips will still give you a fabulous shape.

SLINKY SILHOUETTES BRINGING SEXY BACK Whether you’ve got a fabulous, slim figure or just some fantastic control underwear, now is the time to rejoice as sexy, figure-hugging wedding dress silhouettes are hot, couple with slim column gowns, and the look is set to continue for sure for some time to come. Add to the mix a beautiful backless number with subtle detailing and you have the ingredients for a look that’s elegant and demure with understated sexiness. I think a revealed back is always a good choice for a wedding dress especially considering the view your guests have at the ceremony. Why not give them something to admire? For beautiful back detailing check out this gown by Christian Lacroix at deStafford Bridal with bow and diamante detailing.

BALLERINA SKIRT The most traditional style of wedding dress combines a fitted bodice with a full skirt. This style comes in many different variations but my favourite, generally viewed as one of the most romantic shapes, is the ballerina style skirt. Normally made from reams of frothy tulle, this style dress is as voluminous as it gets. Think Carrie in ‘Sex And The City - The Movie’, when she all but gets lost in a fab Vivienne Westwood creation. If you have a slim-hipped figure and a full bust, this shape will balance top and bottom perfectly, giving you that fairytale bride look. A word of warning though if you are not full busted, avoid this style dress as it will make your bust look tinchy. Also if you are petite there’s the possibility you could just disappear into the dress!

INJECT SOME PERSONALITY Once you’re happy and have signed off on your wedding dress, next it’s time to think about how you can inject some of your own personality into your look. With a bit of imagination this is quite easy to do. Statement accessories and jewellery are all in and readily available on the hightstreet. Team an exquisite gown with statement accessories for a look that’s beautifully demure and elegant. Renowned Irish designer Paul Costelloe adding a stunning jewellery range to his portfolio earlier this summer and as a collection combines the perfect mix of traditional with understated elegance ideal for your wedding outfit. The pieces include bracelets, pendants and rings, in sterling silver and encrusted with sparkling crystal stones, with pearls on certain pieces.

Slimming Your Way To The Aisle

It is little wonder therefore; that most women will push themselves to lose weight and get into the best shape they’ve ever been in for the day they that get married. With more than a year to go until her big day, Natalia still hopes to lose more weight. One of her friends, Liz Costello (57) will be attending the wedding, and has been going along to Slimming World, not only as support, but to lose weight herself. At her niece’s wedding in June last year, Liz weighed what she described as a “staggering” 19 stone, 9½ pounds. She said: “I felt and looked dreadful. I had all sorts of health issues, high blood pressure and cholesterol. “I just noticed how nice everyone else looked, and really was quite envious of the beautiful dresses they were all wearing.” It was at that point she decided that she would lose weight – no matter what. This time it would not just fade out. Unlike Natalia, this is not the first diet plan that Liz has tried. Although she admits to doing reasonably well with previous attempts, she has never experienced the level of success she has had at slimming world. Since attending the classes, she has managed to lose an incredible five stone and eight pounds. “I’ve got a few weddings coming up over the next couple of years. Obviously there is Natalia’s next summer, and I have my nephew’s to look forward to at the end of April. “This time I am looking forward to wearing my new outfit and to feel so different from last year.” Natalia and Liz got to Slimming World at 7pm Mondays at Springfield Community Centre, Perryfields School, Lawn Lane, Chelmsford, CM1 7PP hosted by Claire Morris.

With This Mortgage,

I

t seems the dream of a big white wedding has now been shunned with just one in ten opting for wedding bells over their own doorbell, suggesting that home is where the heart is. But with the cost of a wedding averaging £20,000 is it surprising? Consequently, almost a quarter of people cohabiting think they have the same legal protection as married couples. This is not true. Choosing to move in rather than marry might seem like the simplest option, but it can be so risky. There is no status in English law as a common-law spouse or partner. If any woman’s story illustrates the dangers of not marrying your partner, look no further than Pamela Curran, the 55-year old who lost everything. Her home, her livelihood and her 30-year relationship. Although Pamela and her partner Brian never married, she believed if their relationship did end, Brian would give her a fair share.

Many couples are now choosing a mortgage over a marriage, believing it is too costly and not important anymore. Ivana Sidey investigates whether marriage really is for better or for worse. However, Brian took the lot, and as his partner, not his wife, Pamela learned the hard way that she was entitled to neither maintenance nor support, and had no claim on the home, the business or the income. Numerous attempts to update the law to give

www.essexstylemagazine.co.uk

protection to unmarried couples have failed. It seems the court will always hold in favor of the sanctity of marriage. If a cohabiting relationship breaks down there is very little protection for the weaker partner, typically the woman. As a result, many cohabiting families find themselves facing real difficulties if they split. Solicitors advise cohabiting couples to have both names on the property and at least draw up a cohabitation agreement – which still only gives couple’s limited rights. While it is not very romantic discussing what should happen if you do split up it could save a lot of heartache. So if you’re considering marriage and giving your partner the world, remember it doesn’t have to cost the earth.

RESTAURANT REVIEW

Having been open for almost thirty years, Baumann’s Brasserie has built itself a reputation of being one of Essex’s finest eateries. A favourite among celebrities, the restaurant has popped up on television screens on numerous occasions. William Taylor went to see what all the fuss was about.

I

n many respects, the quiet market town of Coggeshall is an absolute gem. Situated some ten miles outside of Colchester, there are believed to be almost 300 listed buildings, while many of the local businesses have been left untouched for hundreds of years. There has been a market in the town for the best part of a millennium, and even today it oozes the same charm and character that it must have possessed over a hundred years ago. Right in the heart of the market is the equally enchanting Baumann’s Brasserie – once visited by The Hairy Bikers for their BBC series, The Hairy Bikers’ Food Tour of Britain. Being a huge fan of the show, I’ve always been particularly keen to visit Mark Baumann’s restaurant and find out why they deemed it to be a restaurant that would represent Essex’s foodie culture most aptly. Arriving on a Thursday, in time for their lunch service, the market was just about finishing for the day, revealing the front of the brasserie in all its glory, not dissimilar from the street cafes you see along boulevards of Paris. In the summer, a green canopy is pulled out over the pavement to create the ideal al fresco dining area. It’s easy to forget you are in Essex at this point, but equally, it is testament to the sometimes forgotten heritage and tradition of this county.

36

Upon entering, the waitresses were at your service immediately, but not in an overbearing way. My colleague, Ivana, and I were led through to a bar area, where hardly an inch of the wall was not covered with artwork. It was quirky, typically French, and gloriously atmospheric. Quickly we ordered our drinks. Thirsty from the journey, I ordered a fairly generic lager, while Ivana went for the slightly more sophisticated Finca La Colonia Malbec – the house wine for the day. Whilst perusing the menu, we were offered samples of Baumann’s unique smoked salmon ice cream, served in the tiniest of cones, no bigger than one’s thumb. I’ve never been the greatest seafood aficionado (the texture has always been my main bugbear) but in it’s creamy guise, it was really rather pleasant. As if one helping of smoked salmon was not enough, Ivana ordered the London cure smoked salmon, pickled cucumber and warm blini for her starter, as we were taken to our table. I opted for the beetroot tarte tatin with goat’s cheese and chestnuts, intrigued by how the flavours would work together. As an additional appetiser, before our starter arrived, we were given a platter of garlic bread, basil bread and cheese bread, along with a dish of olives. Normally I make a beeline for the garlic bread, but the basil and cheese were so delectable that I

www.essexstylemagazine.co.uk

almost forgot it was even there. It’s hard to find good olives in English restaurants, I find, but the ones we were served were faultless, and bettered only by the ones I happened to enjoy in London’s Fortnum and Mason, earlier this year. There was not much waiting for our starter to come through, but at no point did you ever feel you were being hurried. Both plates proved to be a roaring success, and I was even won over by the hot beetroot. Next we were each served pina colada sorbets to refresh our palette. I must admit

ALWAYS “THE TEXTURE HAS BEEN MY MAIN BUGBEAR”

to being a little confused; pina colada has always been something I’ve drunk, while sorbets have always been something I’ve eaten. Served in a glass, I was not entirely sure how to tackle the challenge before me! The real triumph came when our mains arrived. I had opted for the seared fillet of beef, braised mushroom confit and café de Paris butter – medium-rare. Heavenly would be an understatement. I ordered a side of Baumann’s famous homemade chips to go with it, but by this point I was full to bursting, and was quite ashamed that I could not get through the chips, which were truly spectacular in their own right. A day on, I sincerely regret not finishing them. Ivana went for the eight hour braised pork cheeks, creamed potato, baby onions and sticky plum juices. She loved it, and next time I go to Baumann’s; I have a feeling I might just have to try it myself. To round the meal off, I opted for the pecan bourbon crème brulee with ‘chewing gum’ biscuit. Struggling to eat a single bite more, I bravely ploughed on, helped by the fact that the crème brulee is a genuine candidate for the best I have ever tried. The Mango Malteser cheesecake with whipped cream and raspberry jam that Ivana chose looked just as appetising, although perhaps a little heavy going for me, considering how much we had already eaten.

In all, lunch at Baumann’s Brasserie (with drinks, starter, middle, main and dessert) comes in at around £55-per-head, so really something for the special occasions, although not outlandishly expensive. Head chef on the day, John Rainfield (27) told us he was passionate about food, and that at he and Mark were constantly experimenting to come up with new and quirky ideas for the menu. He also pointed out that Baumann’s work hard to ensure they support local producers whenever possible. He said: “I’m really into sourcing local ingredients, to be honest. Understandably, there are some ingredients that you have to source elsewhere, but wherever we can, we try to get the best local things. “I mean, in a few months time, we’ve got the asparagus farm just up the road in Coggeshall, and we try to get local fish too.” This truly is a restaurant you have to try – I cannot believe I’ve left it until now to actually try it.

iller and Carter will always be a cut above the rest. Their 28 restaurants across the country will remain a mecca for lovers of great food. It has recently reopened its doors on 1st March 2013, where the evening itself was successful in more ways than one, raising £800 for a local cancer charity, St Clare Hospice. When we arrived, general manager, Rob Bryan, invited us to look around the new interior, playing the perfect host. Anyone who has been there before will note that the chic ground floor is now with natural light. This was the setting for our meal, where our waiter, Daniel Bryan, eloquently explained the menu., displaying that for everyone who works here, food is more than just a job, it is a passion. While we perused the menu, we opted

for the trio of breads, containing rosemary focaccia, ciabatta and paprika bread with balsamic vinegar and olive oil, accompanied with a selection of olives. This was the perfect way to start our meal. The bread tasted almost homemade, warming me through, despite the rain outside. Then I opted for the rare fillet 8oz steak. Their slogan reads, “For the love of steak,” and I certainly did fall in love. Miller and Carter steaks will always be of this supreme quality. The expertly cooked steak fell of the fork and melted in my mouth. It was perfected partnered with the spring greens we had to share, my own portion of chips and the bordelaise source, consisting of red wine jus, garlic and parsley. William, our other features writer had decided upon the fillet wellington –

Baumann’s Brasserie 4-6 Stoneham St Colchester Essex CO6 1TT prime fillet steak topped with pate and mushrooms and wrapped with puff pastry, also served with chips. After feeling comfortably full, it was still difficult to say no to the beautiful desserts. Once again they offered a tempted choice and a good variety. I opted for the white chocolate box, while William remained independent with his choice and decided to opt for the rich Crème Brulee. As I have a sweet tooth, I devoured the shortbread topped with white chocolate white mousse and Raspberry coulis, with a shite chocolate coating, and a white chocolate sauce. I feel we have discovered a real gem. Their meat producers Alec Jarrett & Sons work closely with the farmers, so we can trace every steak from field to fork. Head Chef, Ben Daines, explained that Gordon Ramsey himself is a fan, and tried to buy their meat but their gentleman’s handshake with Ashdown Farm prevented this from happening. I cannot recommend this restaurant enough, not only are the staff friendly, but the food is delicious – you must try it! London Road, Harlow, Essex CM17 9NG Tel: 01279 424495

Finding That Man In A Haystack

If you have other things to be doing with your day, Ivana Sidey warns you not to start reading the highly addictive, The Man In The Haystack.

T

his is a very impressive read; especially considering the novel is author, Alice Huskisson’s, first. The novel is written with an original honest tone, following Mae, a fortysomething glamorous Essex girl. As with all romance, she has had her ups and downs and so takes matters into her own hands, blogging about her dating encounters. I am not a forty-something woman, but I adored the book. As the topic of love is so universal, and the path to true love never does run smoothly, it felt as though an old friend had taken my hand and was talking me through her experiences and sharing her secrets. Whatever your age, or even gender, you are always aware of time ticking away, opportunities passing you by, and so you need to seize the day and make your own luck. Out of all the romance novels I have read, and I am a chick lit addict, this one felt the most realistic. We can only reminisce about our favorite Disney tale, but this one is so much more realistic. Mr. Right isn’t always there when you need him to sweep you off your feet. The novel is incredibly well written, and the characterisation is so strong that you feel Mae’s emotion through every page, from her joy to her sadness. So, that is why the story works - Alice Huskisson is writing from the heart and it shows. There is a truth behind her words,, and an empathy that is evoked through a refreshingly honest account of love and romance. For these reasons it may just be one of those rare novels which appeals to both men and women. Alice has clearly studied her subject and understands a man’s psyche and what makes them tick. Her own desire in life has always been to find the man of her dreams, and this was the inspiration for writing her blog and ultimately The Man in a Haystack. While reading the book you may not

always agree with Mae’s choices, but they are made from the heart, with a raw emotion and humour that only the best romances hold. The only criticism would be the cover, which does no justice to the colourful story within. So, as with all great romances, don’t judge a book by its cover, it’s well worth discovering. I was thoroughly impressed with this book, and cannot recommend ‘The Man In A Haystack’ highly enough. If you want to learn about love and life, this is for you. Q & A with Alice Huskisson

If you are still waiting for the man of your dreams to walk into your life then read on. Ivana Sidey catches up with the author of the intelligent chick lit, The Man In The Haystack to find out more Hi Alice, thanks for meeting with us today. What was your inspiration behind the book? Well, I started a blog in 2006 about my daily life – But it soon became clear that the posts about dating were the most popular. Then three friends, independently, told me that I really should publish a book about my dating escapades, so I took their advice. Why did you decide to write the book in the unique blog format? I saw no reason to change the original format given that my readers had been so entertained. I think it also makes for easier reading as each blog post is like a mini chapter. S some of my five star reviews have said “If you love Bridget Jones’ Diary, you’ll love this!” which is great! I have been so flattered by the praise. The characterisation of Mae is so strong, is it based on you at all? It is based upon my own experiences however details such as names of people and places have been changed to protect identities. I am proud to have written from the heart, so yes, there are elements of myself in Mae. Due do the massive popularity of Fifty Shades of Grey, were you ever tempted to add sexually explicit content? I think it may have taken something away from the story and overshadowed Mae’s naivety. I felt it was better to leave the finer details to the reader’s imagination – But they can be left in no doubt that she had some fun! The cover shows a prominent picture of a man, is this anyone you know? Actually no – I saw the photo and felt it was perfect for the book. My intention was that he could be a generic love interest – not necessarily THE Mr Right, although if the reader wants him to be, he can! The book has already done so well, will there be a sequel? I am currently working on one, with the working title: ‘The Man in a Haystack – Searching Hearts’, which will hopefully be published later this year. The Next

This year, the Teen Star regional finals came to Southend. Essex Style Magazine agreed to be one of the media partners, so Terrie Bennett and William Taylor were offered the opportunity to be on the judging panel for the day.

Pop Icon?

TALENTED: The standard this year was very high

A

spiring popstars from across East Anglia descended on Southend last month, hoping to make it to the area finals of ‘Teen Star’ - music mogul, Chris Grayston’s competition to find young talent. The gifted youngsters had already gone through a gruelling audition process, with their latest performance being in front of a live audience. At the start of the competition, some 10,000 pre-teens and teens entered, all hoping to make it to the grand finale at London’s spectacular O2 Arena. The overall winner of the competition can win up to £20,000 worth of prizes, studio time and the opportunity to use some of the UK’s finest music facilities. Undoubtedly, though, the biggest draw is the level of exposure the winner will receive, with labels and agencies from the entertainment industry ready to launch someone’s career. The regional shows, held at the Palace Theatre on London Road in March, were split into three categories, with the preteens performing around lunchtime, the mid teens late afternoon, and late teens in the evening. It’s not unknown for teenagers to break into the charts, with the likes of Justin Bieber, One Direction or Cher Lloyd all having success at an early age. Perhaps the next big star performed at the Palace Theatre that Sunday. The standard was exceptionally high, and a number of those who missed out on getting through to the next round will no doubt get their chance again. The judges were quick to remind them that. For those who were lucky enough to get through, however, the competition will only get tougher now, knowing they are just one good performance away from the O2. Some of the performers decided to play songs that they had written themselves, which always scored highly with the judges, while others opted for covers of popular songs from the charts. If there was to be one criticism, it was the fact that after some ten hours of watching the teens perform, you had seen enough covers of Adele, Taylor Swift and Emile Sande to last you a lifetime! Nevertheless, it was a great show, and Essex Style Magazine cannot wait to see the big final at the O2 later in the year. PHOTOGRAPHY: Arron Leppard

Is TOWIE ? y a W Its Losing

T

he cast of The Only Way Is Essex looks set to face its biggest shake-up yet, when the current series comes to an end. It has been a controversial return for the series, with the Bobby Norris ‘gayby’ storyline, the on-off relationship between Mario and Lucy, and the announcement that Mick and Kirk Norcross would both be leaving the show. Essex Style Magazine understands that is not where the controversy will end, however, with a number of leading cast members facing the axe for “not drawing in the viewers”. It is not the first time TOWIE has faced a backlash from its cast members. In 2011, Amy Childs and Mark Wright both left the show to pursue other projects. Kirk Norcross departed for three series in 2012, worried that he was getting a “fiery” reputation. His departure this time around seems certain to have something to do with Main: his dad’s decision to leave. An anonymous source close to the show told ESM that producers are far from happy with other cast members. They said: “The producers have grown frustrated with the wooden performances of the Walla family who joined the show this series. “I understand they are already sounding out potential new cast members about joining the show, as they contemplate axing Jasmin and Danny.” It remains to be seen whether these threats will come to fruition, and indeed, whether further leading cast members will decide to quit the show, but ESM certainly feels they will be missed.

The Sugar Hut Our regular columnist, Trevor Elsey brings you all the inside gossip from The Sugar Hut nightclub in Brentwood. This month he tells us more about Mick Norcross’ decision to quit TOWIE, and some of the big names who have visited lately.

I

t’s been the usual manic rush at Sugar Hut this month – I seem to have about 800 things going on at any one moment. As ever, though, I have found time to put something together for the wonderful readers of Essex Style. Unless you have been living in a bubble in recent weeks, you’ve probably pre-empted my big ‘breaking news’ story in this issue. Yes, it’s true, we are no longer part of The Only Way is Essex, and neither is Mick. It’s a great shame to go our separate ways, but as the national press have correctly reported, he had grown tired of the way the club was being portrayed by the show. We’ve always considered ourselves to be a classy venue where people can come

and drink champagne and feel a little bit spoiled. We’d never want that to change. Not that we expected it to, but the decision to pull out of the show has not seen a decline in the number of visitors and celebrities who have come to the Hut. The local loyalty scheme has continued, with £5 entry for anyone with an Essex postcode. As ever, Michael Andre did his usual set, while the Sugar Hut Honeys were on top form over Easter Weekend. Whilst we may not be on the show anymore, many of the stars of TOWIE paid us a visit, with Kirk, Joey, Sam, Billie and Frankie among our visitors. Too Damn Glam took over on Easter Friday, with ‘Projekt Glam’. As you know, our new café is up and

running, with many famous faces popping in to pay us a visit. As we hoped, it has proven to be extremely popular with the locals as well. So what have we got to look forward to in April? DJ Charlie Hedges from Kiss 100 is coming on April 13th, while Joey Essex has his D’Reem Hair launch party on April 4th. Finally, keep an eye out for the special birthday packages we have coming up. Where better than Brentwood’s premier venue to celebrate your big day? For now though, keep safe and say hello next time you are visiting the Hut. We’ll always go out of way to make sure you have a great night. Remember; “it’s not just a nightclub, it’s a lifestyle.”

Beyond The Honeymoon

Every couple always says that their wedding day is the happiest day of their life, but what happens after the happily ever after? Ivana Sidey Reports on life after marriage. The vows “‘till death do us part” could not come soon enough for many newlyweds during the difficult first year of marriage. Could it be that we have all just felt too much pressure? We are a generation who won’t accept anything less than the fairy tale fantasy. However, Sally and Richard Dixon did find their fairy tale. They had known each other for nine years at their sailing club before Richard proposed at Sally’s favourite destination, the Isles of Scilly. Of course Sally said yes, describing it as: ‘the most amazing day of my life!” The pair didn’t want to marry in church. After all, a wedding is all about feelings, those for one another, and those for the venue. When the Dixon’s first saw Moot Hall, they fell in love all over again. Set in the centre of Maldon’s high street, the beautiful 15th century, grade one listed building proved the perfect intimate venue for their wedding at 12.30pm on Monday 9th April 2012.

The ceremony was performed by Deputy Registrar Eunice Downes, a former Maldon Town Mayor, who said “I’m proud to conduct the ceremony in this ancient building, adding another layer of history to its story. Especially as they were the first ever couple to marry there!” Richard explained he was excited to know that they were the first couple to marry there, “but it was such a beautiful venue, we would have married there whether we were the first or not. I would recommend it to everyone.” Their first year was described as “A whirlwind”, with a mini break before their real honeymoon to Norway. Ultimately the wedding day is only the start of the journey, and a marriage always takes work. Longevity requires trust - and perhaps an amazing venue too! The building has a special place in the hearts of the Maldonians, and no doubt Sally and Richard too.

Bieber s e u l B When Essex Style Magazine’s editor, Terrie Bennett bought tickets for her daughter, Skylar to see Justin Bieber at the O2 Arena in March, she could not have foreseen the nightmare that lied ahead. This is her version of events.

L

ike many 12-year-olds, my daughter Skylar is mad about Justin Bieber. She idolises him, her name on Twitter is ‘Skylar Bieber’ and her bedroom wall is covered in his posters. It’s not something that bothers me greatly. Many girls of her age are the same, and I know all her school friends have a similarw obsession with the Canadian popstar. You can imagine her delight, therefore, when I told her I had managed to get her tickets to see him live at the O2 Arena on 4th March. I purchased an extra ticket so that she could take one friend, and I dropped the two excited ‘tweens’ at the venue in plenty of time for his expected arrival on stage at 8.30pm. Skylar was wearing a denim jacket, with BELIEVE (the name of his tour) written across the back, gold high top trainers, and clip in purple hair. She certainly looked the part. To my horror, when I arrived to pick her up at 10.30, the doors were still shut – he still hadn’t arrived on stage, instead having to listen to Michael Jackson tracks being played through the sound system. No explanation was given for Bieber’s lateness, and many children were left in floods of tears when their parents, aware that they had to get up for school the next day, were asking them to leave before they even got to see him. Furthermore, there were others having to leave in order to get the last trains and busses back to where they live, and some who had GCSE exams to sit the very next day. When Justin Bieber eventually arrived on stage, he was faced with boos and empty seats. He didn’t even play his full set. We eventually got home at 2am in the morning, and believe me, getting Skylar out of bed for school the next day wasn’t easy. I was angry, but many fans were left distraught. The whole thing was a complete disgrace.
