Star of The Only Way Is Essex, Bobby Norris Bobby The Fashionista!

was lucky enough to be given the amazing job of presenting this year’s Essex Fashion Week alongside the company founders and twins, Adam and Simon Ryan. They are such lovely guys and the turn out on the day was brilliant. I always love Essex Fashion Week and have been going religiously for the past four years, so when I was invited to be a guest presenter I jumped at the chance. The main task was for me to talk to people, so its my ideal job! I had the pleasure of seeing some of the amazing new designers showcasing their ranges and beautiful models. It truly was an inspiring and amazing day for anybody interested in fashion, clothes and the latest accessories. Whilst presenting I also interviewed my gorgeous friend and TOWIE colleague Lauren Pope on stage as she is the face of Nikki Lissoni UK. #FoxyRoxy

As fans of the show know, anything really can happen, so I am intrigued to see what’s to come. I joined the show back in series four, so to be going into the ninth series now is amazing. I love TOWIE and feel very proud to be a part of it. Myself and the rest of the cast are all in summer mode now, so clothes will be minimal, tans hopefully at their darkest and drama at its fullest! We are also preparing for our summer so I am most excited, but I cant let the cat out the bag where we are going just yet. #HushHush Twitter addict

LOOK ESSEX FASHION WEEK

With over ten years of experience and as head make-up artist at Essex Fashion Week, Michelle MacGregor brings you her exclusive tips and tricks in her popular monthly column for ESM.

A

s Essex Fashion Week’s head makeup artist for the second year running, I was very excited to key a spring and summer look for the catwalk. My inspiration came from London Fashion Week. The make-up at the Giles Spring/Summer 2013 collection particularly grabbed my attention. Hot pink lips, clean dewy skin, bleached brows, fresh barely there eye make-up and highlighted cheekbones and nose. I loved it! It has always been my aim to bring high fashion make-up trends to Essex Fashion Week, but I always try to inject some ‘Essex’ and a sense of

achievability for those watching the show. Add nice natural false lashes courtesy of Lash Boutique and a bronzer contour to the cheekbones, and voila my Essex Fashion Week Spring/Summer make-up look is complete. This year I was very lucky to have stumbled across a fantastic brand of makeup called Golden Rose. Although Golden Rose has been very successful in the US and all over Europe it is only just being introduced to the UK. Golden Rose UK jumped at the chance to Fashion Week, and I was very excited to pick the products I would use to create my look for the catwalk.

Key products - Terracotta eye shadow (nude 111, white 101) used to highlight eyes, tops of - Terracotta stardust blush-on (101, £10.99). A nice contour for the cheekbones - Eyeliner pencil (white 312, £5.79). Used on the lower waterline of the eye to - Golden Rose Lipstick (shade 57, Hot Pink, £5.49). All available at www. goldenroseuk.com.

Recreate the Essex Fashion Week nails:

The Essex Fashion Week Spring/Summer nails were designed by Tinu Bello (www. colourriotnails.co.uk). She is a freelance nail artist, running her own team, working at many top events like London Fashion Week, DKNY Vogue Fashion Night out and working on the Butter London nail team. Using Golden Rose Polish no. 08 Neon pink and no. 104 Pink Jolly Jewels glitter, she created glitter tip ombre nails. - Apply two coats of 08 to the full nail. - Then apply glitter 104 to a make-up sponge. Using a dabbing motion apply the glitter polish to the tip of the nail, easing pressure (and less glitter) at the middle of the nail creating the ombre effect. - Lastly Apply a top coat using the Quick Dry top coat by Golden Rose. How the hair styles were done: There were two teams of hair stylists working backstage as Essex Fashion Week this year: Oakley Academy and Chic Management. Kay from Oakley academy designed some gorgeous buns, adding on trend braids, bows and texture. She has been doing hair professionally for many years, and more recently founded the Oakley Academy. Darren Kennedy’s Dilemmas Style

Irish style-guru, Darren Kennedy has become a popular face on British he brings his famous fashion tips to Essex, answering your questions

A. As the weather warms up a maxi dress is a wise investment piece. Generally speaking, it’s a garment that is versatile, flattering and easy to wear. Take the time to find the right style for you and you’ll have found a hard working staple of your summer wardrobe. Designers at Debenhams tend to excel in this area and right now the blue gradient snake print dress from Butterfly by Matthew Williamson (£112) is one of my personal favourites. The sleeveless V-neck design with graduated colour panels of aqua and blue act to visually elongate the body and in turn play down the tummy area. The pleat detail at the bust and overlay skirt emphasise this effect. Also at Debenhams is the ombre yellow/orange maxi from Star by Julien Macdonald (£98). The embellishment at the bust works to draw the eye up and away from your tummy while the empire waistline means the skirt drapes elegant over your figure. It’s quite the showstopper. 20 |

For a slightly more casual look, the striped dip hem maxi on Asos (£72) or the printed one by Gallery (£42, Dunnes Stores) are both worth considering. If it’s a glitzy evening style you’re after, the Myleene Klass sequin maxi at Littlewoods (£109) is for you. The heavily embellished gold bead and sequin skirt contrasted with a plain black jersey top makes for an elegant look.

A. Ultimately it all boils down to the styling and with the right accessories, jackets and footwear, there’s absolutely no reason why you shouldn’t get plenty of wear out of your prom dress this spring summer. One of the biggest trends in outerwear this year, continuing 2012’s love affair of sports lux, is the varsity jacket. The boxy shape of this all-American hero piece will balance out the girly-ness of your dress. Asos have one with leather sleeves (£78) that will bring texture to your look. Topshop also have a rather cool blue one with yellow accents that’s good value at £57. Team it with a pointed-toe kitten heel to achieve this season’s ultimate dressed up, dressed down look. Similarly, contrast the sweetness of the floral print by roughing it up with some tough texture and materials. A biker jacket, like the faux leather

“...it all boils down to styling with the right accessories...” monochrome one from Miss Selfridge (£50), will give it edge. If you want to really go for it, clash your prints for maximum effect. The woven stud trim biker jacket in shades of cobalt, lime and magenta from Boohoo Boutique (£57) will create the desired effect. For an altogether more casual daytime look, team your dress with a disheveled pair of converse and some big statement jewels. The Karelian cuff with mesh and metallic detailing by Irish designer Bláithín Ennis has got it all going on (£71).

A. Generally speaking when you opt for a colour pop in your trousers, it’s best to choose a neutral coloured shirt. For a classic combo, wear a crisp white shirt with a black slim fit tie and tan brogues for a style that’s sharp and uncomplicated. Shades of blue or navy will also really complement your trousers. H&M have a navy, button-down collar shirt for £16.85. If you’d rather go with a less formal look, Acne’s blue chambray shirt with contrast collar will look great worn buttoned up without a tie (£60). For a look that’s a little more tailored, try this striped, spread collar shirt and polka dot tie combination from the Sartorial collection at Marks & Spencer (shirt £45, tie £23). Topman and Next have a good selection of well priced ties such as the navy patterned one (£18, Next).

SUMMER for h s e l f e h t h s a l F

DITCH THOSE WINTER JUMPERS

Summer is now upon us, so it’s time to ditch those winter jumpers and update your wardrobe with the latest trends. The high street is making a comeback, as student journalist Nicole Cottrell explains.

Nicoleottrell C Explains Now that summer is here, the jeans and jumpers need to be ditched – pronto. Think big, think bold and think bright. Don’t be afraid to colour block or mix and match prints, but if your approach to fashion is ‘less is more’, then don’t worry; there are still plenty of options.

Missguided have a ‘Bright Now’ section on their website solely dedicated to this trend. Depending on what colours you feel most comfortable wearing, experiment by teaming bold bottoms with a bold top and a statement necklace. If you want that pop of colour but in a little more subtle way, stick with the bright bottoms and team them with a plain crop top and a few accessories. Ombre is another key trend this summer and New Look is the perfect go-to shop if you want to incorporate this look into your summer wardrobe. New Look offer some ombre basics at extremely reasonable prices which you just can’t afford to miss. Now for a blast from the past: dungarees have made a knockout comeback and it looks like they’re here to stay. If you’re looking for the perfect pair, then head over to Topshop where you’ll be spoilt for choice.

In fact, denim all-round is a winner this season and such a simple outfit choice. A denim skater skirt should be a statement item in your wardrobe as you can build so many different outfits around it. What’s the point of a killer outfit without a great pair of shoes, right? Your Nike Air Max’s need to be demoted to the back of your wardrobe so you can make room for something a little daintier. Tan is the perfect versatile summer shoe colour, and flat cut-out pumps are the perfect shoe. Miss Selfridge stocks an utterly gorgeous pair for a mere £25 ready for you to snap up. Remember shopaholics - you don’t need to go crazy and buy half of Topshop in order to prep for Summer, just be selective and choose items you can mix and match. Don’t forget about the accessories though, top each and every outfit off with a pair of sunnies and you’re good to go.

t six foot tall, a man of sturdy build with a deep gravelly voice, you would not immediately think of this particular Essex gardener as a victim of domestic violence. But for two-years, Dave (given a false name to protect his identity) was abused by his girlfriend. He simply remained too loyal, yet embarrassed, to report her to the police. It was not until he eventually summoned the courage to go and speak to his local council that he was given a place at a local men’s refuge. Dave’s story is a very real one, with thousands of men in the UK falling victim to domestic violence, but remaining quiet, afraid to come forward and speak out against their partner. Speaking to The Independent earlier on this year, Dave struggled to tell his story, still seemingly ashamed of what had happened to him. A deep scar is still visible on the 45-yearold’s forehead from an incident where his girlfriend once smashed a bottle of Jack Daniels over his head, leaving him bleeding on the pavement. a natural death. Take That, Boyzone and the Backstreet Boys were gone, while Five were self-destructing. But then Blue came along. Britain’s unique love of the boy band was

reignited as Lee Ryan, Anthony Costa, Duncan James and Simon Webbe were propelled into the limelight with their debut album, All Rise. Suddenly, the whole perception of boy bands changed. No longer were they considered to be the hallmarks of cheesy 90s pop, but a medium with which soulful music and ballads became trendy again.

Duncan explained that the band was formed after they each saw an advert in a newspaper for auditions. “Back in the day, there was nothing like X Factor or any of these reality TV shows,” he said. “The only way to get into the music industry was through buying a newspaper called ‘The Stage’. In the back there were

So we shook her hand and respected her for that, and after that there were no problems.” So what about the new album? They all agree that it is a departure from their old music. They are older and wiser, and their voices are more developed. Furthermore, they’ve moved with the times, releasing a very current sounding album, and

But Simon was quick to disagree on that point, adding: “We did say that we would be pursuing solo careers and stuff, to be fair.” Interestingly the decision to split might very well have been prompted by none other than Elton John, who they had worked with before. WHAT MAKES SOMEONE

A BULLY? Stories of bullying, torment and depression seem than ever before. William Taylor attempts to put

B

ack in March, a video went viral on YouTube, depicting a schoolgirl being repeatedly kicked in the head… simply for having ginger hair. At the time, the girl was only 14 years old, and the hideous bullies could be heard screaming ‘let her have it’. by a cowardly bystander, who rubbed salt into the wound by uploading it to YouTube, just hours later. But what had the victim really done wrong? She didn’t choose to be born with the ‘wrong’ colour hair. Chances are, she didn’t try to draw attention to the issue either. The incident, which took place at The Deanes School in Thundersley sent shockwaves not only around Britain, but the world. However, it’s sad that it took such a brutal attack to alert the public to what is going on in our schools. How could teenagers honestly be so cruel? The incident has meant the issue of bullying in schools has been propelled back into the spotlight. It begs the question, what really makes a child a bully?

The fact of the matter is, though, that most children who were bullies in school do actually grow up to be reasonably decent human beings. Furthermore, many of these children come from loving families and well-to-do backgrounds. The old theory that a child who is a bully has a rotten home-life is no longer true. “Back in the day,” wrote Fox News correspondent, Manny Alvarez, “bullies were thought to be social pariahs plagued by low self-esteem who needed to pick on others to make themselves feel good. “However, researchers around the world are discovering that just isn’t the case.” There lies the point. Alvarez was commenting on bullying at a middle-class school in Long Island, New York. The same analysis can be applied to the leafy, suburban streets of Thundersley. Lydia Heaton from Beat Bullying, one of the UK’s leading charities that deal with the problem, said it is not always easy for parents to know that their child is a bully. She said: “Children who are bullying are highly unlikely to talk about their behavior, either because they are afraid of your

reaction or because they don’t believe that what they’re doing is wrong. “Often young people bully because they are being bullied and harassed in some way themselves.” Bullying is as big an issue today as it ever has been. Tragic stories about young children taking their own lives due to newspapers – and the problem doesn’t seem to be getting any better. Indeed, with the rise of Facebook, Twitter and smartphones, it seems that if anything, the problem is getting worse. So often, though, the main focus of schools and the government has either been on punishing the perpetrators or counselling the victims. No one seems to have taken a moment to explore the inherent causes. Is a child a bully by nature or nurture? Is their home life really to blame? Or, indeed, can it even be stopped? Whatever the case may be, it is time bullying in schools was brought to an end, once and for all. For help and advice calle the National Bullying Hotline on: 0845 22 55 787

THE 11.11 Phenomena Numerologists believe that events linked to the time 11:11 appear more often than can be explained by chance or coincidence. This belief is related to the concept of synchronicity. Some authors claim that seeing 11:11 on a clock is an auspicious sign. Others claim that 11:11 signals a spirit presence

The belief is related to the concept of synchronicity. Some authors claim that seeing 11:11 on a clock is an auspicious sign. Others claim that 11:11 signals a spirit presence. I started experiencing this rather bizarre occurrence about two years ago. At first I thought they were coincidences, I would stand with my back to a digital clock and something made me turn around and I would notice that the time would be 11:11 on so many occasions. Then I started noticing these digits on computers, microwave ovens, cars, documents – you name it. It was driving me mad to the point where I tried to ignore it. They were showing up so much. The number of times I witnessed this phenomenon led me to question a little deeper I began to search the internet for more information on the subject, and the results made my skin shiver. I wrote about my experience in a forum and I was immediately inundated by hundreds of emails from all around the world. Individuals were telling me their own 11:11 stories, almost all saying ‘I thought it only happened to me,’ all with paranormal stories behind each one. Although i was glad im not the only one for those of you who feel that we are "nuts" I hope you do not experience it, because if you do your life will be changed permanently.

I researched it further, and it was getting difficult for me to decipher as i never really believed in all this paranormal stuff until now. My intuition told me it was positive, but what was it really all about?

months to live. The 11.11 began to happen nearly everyday. Barely a month later, he sadly passed away. The date was November (11th month)) 2nd, 2011. The time of death was 1am.

I would look at clock and 11.11 would be staring right back at me the more times it happened the more it would feel like the whole world had stopped around me as soon as I saw it. I had absolutely no intention of wanting to know what the time is - I’m not a clock-watcher – so this struck me as an odd coincidence. When it "happens", it happens. I cannot control it.

That morning I had driven to the hospital, and on my way had stopped to get some petrol and mints. To my astonishment the bill total was £11.11. Can you imagine what I was thinking at that point?

The most strangest time being after seeing 11:11 come up on a clock, ... I waited for it to go the next minute, but to my surprise ... the next minute was 11:14. I stared at the clock all the time, and lost those 3 minutes.

I arrived at the hospital at 5.11am and purchased my ticket. The ticket would run out at 11.11am!!! After my grandfather died, I thought that would be the last I’d see of the 11.11 situation, but I was wrong.

Organising the funeral, my mother came home white as sheet and handed me the date for my grandfathers funeral which was November 11th, Just look at the facts: my 2011 at 11am. leanliness was most certainly not the order of the day for last month’s world famous Maldon Mud race. If competitors made it to the finish line without being covered from head to toe in the smelly sludge, something had to have gone wrong. Around 15,000 spectators turned out to witness 39-year-old John Eddington break the record with his energy-sapping time of three minutes and 15 seconds over the 400-metre course.

More than 200 people took on the challenge that saw them run across Essex’s Blackwater River towards Maldon town centre. Now a charity event, the Maldon Mud Race began in 1973, when, as the story goes, a regular at one of the local pubs was challenged to serve a meal on the riverbank dressed in a tuxedo. Naturally, it was a dash across the river to get the meal over, but was soon replaced by an awaiting barrel of beer for competitors to consume on the other side before racing back. The beer barrel has long disappeared, and fundraising for charities has become the order of the day. Vice-Chairman of the Maldon Mud Race, Brian Farrington said: “For us, the event is all about raising money for great causes.

“Last year we distributed in excess of £46,000, while this year’s major beneficiaries include Farleigh Hospice, Little Haven Children’s Hospice, Brainwave, and a number of smaller local recipients.” They are set to hold a sponsor event and awards evening in September for the competitors. I was going to ignore it until soon after, I saw the pictures. To me it seemed like yet another wonderful trick by a well-meaning marketing company. But then I started talking to people who had tried it, and soon became convinced. So what does the virtual gastric band entail? Well, just like a normal gastric band, it is all about restricting the amount of food the body can take in. In theory it could stop those cravings and oversized portions by giving me the psychological belief that I was full up. You can understand it with a real gastric band. The stomach actually cannot take in any more food, but with a virtual one, it takes a little bit more thinking.

Hypnotherapy Works in Danbury – which kind of gave away what sort of procedure I would be having. It was explained to me that the gastric band works

under hypnosis. Essentially the ‘operation’ creates a smaller appetite, hypnotically reduces stomach to a much smaller size, and reduces the urge to snack. The following three sessions would then address issues around food, including emotional eating, issues in the past, habits, unhelpful thinking and also goals for the future.

As a chauffeur to the stars, and an all round petrol head, Ollie Fletcher knows just about everything there is to know about cars. This month he launches his exclusive column with Essex Style Magazine, where he brings you reviews of the hottest new cars on the market and the latest from all the big local car shows.

I

t was a perfect day for the debut Classic and Supercar show held at the prestigious Warren Golf and Country Club in the picturesque village of Woodham Walter. The highlight of the event was a Concours featuring more than 100 cars with everything from veterans to modern supercars. Eric Clapton’s old Ferrari and Mick Jagger’s Rolls Royce, now owned by actress Mischa Barton, even made an appearance. Runner-up was a quirky one-off 1931 Alfa Romeo Spider and a 1963 Ferrari 250GT Lusso took top prize. Current Formula One racer Max Chilton, who also entered the Concours with his father’s charming MGB convertible, presented prizes. He said: “Being a huge classic car fan, I was excited about being involved in the event, but the sheer variety of cars that were on display completely blew me away.” Max (22) attended with his company vehicle, the 2013 Marussia MR02 Formula One car. Catering and refreshments were plentiful and after talking briefly to a caterer who was expecting a couple of thousand people to attend, it turns out almost 7,000 people visited the show!

The weather was ideal for a family day out to see cars ranging from vintageBentleys and Jaguars to American muscle cars and modern supercars. Mercedes-Benz Chelmsford brought some of their latest, greatest cars and had their own stand in a prime spot. The show was heavily advertised over the past few months and it certainly impressed. Parking was ample and a walk across one of the well-kept undulating fairways took you first past 1960s Aston Martins and Porsches alongside vintage Bentleys. There was live music and entertainment throughout the day from the Heart FM Angels and a mesmerising aerobatic display by former RAF Red Arrows pilots, ‘The Glades’. The condition and assortment of visitor’s cars and cars on the concours field certainly exceeded the expectations of many in attendance.

JUNE GARDENING

W

ith summer now upon us, there is no excuse not to get yourself out into the fresh air of your garden. As well as that, there’s certainly no excuse for Essex Style Magazine not to launch its brand new gardening column. We’ll all want to have barbecues and spend time outdoors over the coming months, so it is important that we keep our garden looking great. Each month we will endeavour to bring you all the important tips and tricks for keeping your garden in top condition, as well as all the latest news, inventions and developments from the world of gardening. Love Your Lawn Mowing your lawn at this time of year probably feels much like painting The Forth Bridge. Barely have you had a chance to enjoy the fruits of your labour before you’re marching up and down in straight lines once again. Sadly, if you love your lawn, there is going to be no other way. The key thing to remember is little and often. That’s not to say you have to become your own personal green keeper, but there’s no point doing a radical hack one weekend and leaving it for two or three weeks before making your next assault on the grass. Not only is it hard

work for you, but the uneven, overgrown grass looks ugly. Furthermore, hacking away at your lawn is only going to damage it. Mow your lawn once a week minimum. With the long evenings, the best advice would be to do it on a Friday evening straight after work, as then you have the rest of the weekend to sit back and enjoy it. Deadheading It is also important to remember, at this time of year, that it is all about deadheading. Spring is gone, and your garden will be coming into full bloom – so there is nothing amongst your shrubbery. Deadheading is vital, but it is not just for aesthetic reasons. By removing those spent which is naturally very good for the health of your plants. It will seem like a never-ending task, but honestly, it is absolutely essential, and you will reap the rewards in the long-term. Bedding In Arguably this is the nicer side of garden. There is nothing better than adding new there is plenty of that for you to be getting on with in June. Your bulbs should have gone in during the spring, so really it is too late to be starting them off at this time of year. However, plant out hardened off and sprouted herbaceous perennial plants, such as Dahlias. These can be some of the most They perform best in well-watered, yet free-draining soils, and need plenty of sunlight. A south facing border would be absolutely ideal, with a healthy amount of sand and compost dug in. Hopefully our tips and advice as ever, we love to hear your feedback. For now though, get gardening!
