Estela Magazine 2016 4 | ESTELA
EDITOR’S NOTE HAPPY NEW YEAR! In spite of the darkness that was 2016, we made it through. We put our pain and disappointment into our art and put together another beautiful book. I feel this issue symbolizes our unity and passion for what we do, and tells the world that no matter what shit is thrown at us, we will “float on” and create. I want to announce that starting with our Spring Issue, Estela will become a quarterly publication. Going from a bi-monthly schedule to a quarterly one allows us more time to meet our demand and collect even more content from new artists. Even though the book will be less frequent, the content will be just as amazing (because of you, of course!). So keep an eye out for that new editorial calendar. Ready to feel nostalgic? Feast your eyes...

The
90s.
What an interesting decade. It is probably one of the most diverse from the beginning to the end; we experienced different eras within the era. Clothing wise, it wasn’t great. The baggy clothes, the drab A-list actors on the red carpet - which gave way to models like Naomi Campbell to have so much popularity during that time. Plus, the many trends that spanned from 1990-1999. What makes the nineties more interesting are the trading tariffs and the shift in the fashion industry from havingmanufacturing dominance to more sophisticated positions like Trend Forecasting. The industry shift set the stage for the ultimate disrupter to traditional fashion known now as Fast Fashion. Things began to shift in the mid-1990s, in wake of trade tariffs like Free Trade Area of the Americas and Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation making it easier for US retailers to do trade with foreign countries. At the same time, the unionization of the
manufacturing sector was finalized in 1995. By the late 1990s, most of the manufacturing jobs were shipped overseas, creating new opportunities for jobs in the American Fashion Industry, new policies, and the openness of the fashion industry that many people are enjoying today. Since the late 1990s, the internet and emergence of social media has made breaking into the fashion industry more accessible. With the reduction of import tariffs under NAFTA, fashion became more globalized and homogeneous, according to a report from the Joint Economic Committee on the Economic Impact of the Fashion Industry. Truly, we are witnessing a great time in fashion. We have so many options. The separation of runway and ready-to-wear is no longer blurred. And thanks to industry shifts of 90s, we are all better dressed.

“did you sleep on the wrong side? i’m catchin’ a bad vibe - and it’s contagious. What’s the latest?”
Words by Byron Cordero
Even if you didn’t know where these lyrics were from, you knew that two things were true: there’s an issue and whoever is directing the dialogue means business...and that was Aaliyah both as a musician as an individual. How many other 15-year old starlets land their first number at spot 18 on the Billboard 200 with their first hit song? Her hit single, “Back & Forth,” from Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number, put her on the map as Entertainment Weekly critics stated, “her silky vocals are more agile than those of self-proclaimed queen of hip-hop soul Mary J. Blige. Aaliyah exudes street attitude a bit too self-consciously-nonetheless, a promising start.” Aligning anyone with Mary J.Blige in the R&B industry is an honor, but to hear the words “more agile” next to that is a game changer entirely. 52 | ESTELA
Other than the beauty that echoed from her vocal chords, Aaliyah proved to be one of the most self-actualized people of our time. If not her ability to keep her hair covering her left eye at all times (to invoke the actress Veronica Lake), or the over-sized tomboy separates that drew all the attention to her goddess midriff, the person on the outside proved to be as beautiful as the one within. Furthermore, it was Aaliyah’s ability to marry her Chicago street smarts, with a reverence for education, and a strong sense of autonomy in an industry (like most entertainment) that offers purely sex. A woman empowered, Aaliyah was a master of balance. The Village Voice wrote about her image and artistry as, “she was lithe and dulcet in a way that signified neither jailbait nor hottie—

an ingenue whose selling point was sincerity, not innocence and the obverse it implies. It was this fusion of masculine and feminine, both in apparel as in presence, that allowed the right mix of delicate with firm, dark and light, old soul in a young mind, that projected onto her talent. Soft vocals flooded the stage amidst heavy bass and electro sounds that wouldn’t lose her - but rather the audience still able to find her. Sincerity. Aaliyah’s ability to know her strengths and channel it into a realm where perhaps softer voices were not heard, were. ESTELA | 55

The multi-faceted artist prove that she could also act who could forget her cameo in Romeo Must Die, or lead role in Queen of the Damned, and prior to the disastrous flight that ended her life in 2001, she had been selected to be a part of the world’s largest sci-fi saga: The Matrix. When I think of Aaliyah, I think of of the word rich and all that it encompasses. A trailblazer of her time - Aaliyah knew not of convention, nor of trends. Aaliyah is an Arabic and Jewish name “Aliya” derived from the Hebrew word “aliyah”, and meant “highest, most exalted one, the best.” and according to Billboard, Aaliyah revolutionized R&B with her sultry mix of pop, soul and hip hop...if that’s not an example of living up to one’s name… I don’t know what is. 58 | ESTELA
