Megan Rawson MANAGING EDITOR
We’re living in an age where multidisciplinaries know no boundaries and hyper-pollination describes the fusion between design, architecture, landscape, fashion, art and craft. With these ideas front of mind, we turned our attention to capturing what it means to live globally and went in search of design that straddles disciplines and pushes into new frontiers. In pulling our global issue together, I was hugely influenced by conversations with the international creatives, artisans, designers and big-vision thinkers featured. In true est fashion Issue #33 is a showcase of brave and innovative design that voyages across continents to deliver a compendium of cleverly designed international spaces, people, product and places. Take off with us as we head to the Greek Islands, Milan and the Netherlands before touching down in the United States. We hope you see this issue as your passport to the global design stage.

We all know good style transcends time and place, so take a moment to set your style GPS wherever you are and give gravitas to your own kind of global fashion currency. March to a street beat with a resolute edge in wearable trends like an oversized man-style blazer, a jumpsuit, ever-reliable denim and of course, a trainer. Adopt a worldly mindset, making sure you’ll move through the crowd be it at a gallery in downtown LA, a summer party in London or tripping the light fantastic in Paris. Designer Giancarlo Valle delivers a stately, pictureperfect summer house on Rhode Island, featuring classical American architecture and a stellar line-up of designers and artists throughout.
DESIGN Studio Giancarlo Valle PHOTOGRAPHY Stephen Kent Johnson WORDS Megan Rawson
Overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, a New England mansion perched on the coast of Rhode Island serves as a vacation home for globe-trotting entrepreneur and hotelier Kevin Wendle, his partner and their two young boys. Providing the perfect opportunity to indulge his love of avant-garde art, fashion, colour, architecture and design, this handsome yet dated historic home has been recast as an exuberant masterpiece at the hands of architectural and interior designer Giancarlo Valle. Wendle met Valle during a chance encounter at fashion designer Jason Wu’s wedding in Tulum, Mexico. Bonding over a mutual love of mid-century furnishings and contemporary art, Wendle called on Valle to take on his latest project; ‘Watch Hill House’ named after its surrounding neighbourhood. In a reductive approach, Valle set about instilling a softness and flow that leads from one space seamlessly into another. Removing obsolete walls instantly provided an open, easy connection between rooms and stripping back stuffy detailing in favour of curvaceous edges quickly brought the house back into a modern setting. Throughout the home, generous passageways, sweeping staircases, built-in timber furniture and traditional imported British fireplaces all pay homage to the home’s New England location.
Left: Mid-century pieces by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret, Serge Mouille and Charlotte Perriand sit side-by-side to create an iconic mix.
Following the completion of structural changes, came furnishing. Both Wendle and Valle combed their way through Wendle’s extensive collection of furniture, lighting and artwork from storage facilities as far as Paris, New York and Los Angeles. Handpicking the crème de la crème from each collection, they rounded out their curation with bespoke custom pieces and prized new additions. There are many layers informing this home. Aside from blocks of deep marine blue which reflect the home’s ocean outlook, the rest of the home follows a traditionally neutral palette; allowing for an assortment of artwork and vintage furniture to take centre stage. Covetable pieces by Charlotte Perriand, Le Corbusier, Serge Mouille, Pierre Jeanneret and Jean Prouvé sit side-by-side with modern-day gems by Faye Toogood, Rick Owens, Michael Anastassiades, Dimore Studio and Apparatus. The Watch Hill House embodies a beautiful union of cultures as a result of the owner’s distinctive, global style. Giancarlo Valle proves that fusing the past and present can forge a daring and decorative triumph.
Above: A Japanese teak bench by Andrianna Shamaris at the foot of the bed adds a raw earthiness, while a pair of Atollo 235 lamps lends a refined lightness.

MONOCHROME MASTERPIECE Shadowed by its ecclesiastical history, this grand Dutch estate reveals the timeless interior grace of a monochrome palette.
DESIGNER Studio Niels PHOTOGRAPHY Thomas De Bruyne WORDS Sophie Lewis
In the centre of Maastricht, an ancient university city on the southern tip of the Netherlands, three Gothic churches peer over the shoulder of a brick residence. They’re a pertinent reminder of the home and its guesthouse’s history as a monastery and chapel, whose foundations can be traced back to the 13th century. Faced with the monumental task of restoring and transforming the home, guesthouse and surrounding landscape was designer Niels Maier of Studio Niels. It was the second project the owners had engaged Niels to design, sharing a common interest in honouring the intricacies of the original buildings and dissembling parts that were insensitively added. Inside, both the owners and Niels wanted to achieve a crisp and calm atmosphere by focusing on a monochrome palette and minimalist opulence.
“ The round Tulip dining table by Eero Saarinen is a perfect fit in the loggia and adds a feminine and subtle, sexy feel to the space.” Niels Maier, director of Studio Niels
Niels began by opening up and rearranging the layout of the master bedroom suite, living and kitchen spaces. The designer modified the circular, tiled ‘loggia’ to create a dining room readily connected to the living space and manicured landscape, while preserving the glasshouse in jet-black to make a dramatic wine bar. “I carefully restored the handcrafted wooden doors and frames and the original moulded ceilings, leaving them all-white to create a natural play between light and shadow,” Niels says. “White ensures that natural light deeply pierces the home.” Adding to the all-white scheme is the polished Corian kitchen worktop and cabinetry, together with the top-to-toe Corian surfaces in the bathrooms. In juxtaposition, Niels introduced coffee black oak flooring to match the existing oak boards. Niels says furniture was selected for its aesthetic and functional value. “My client and I shared the same passion for modern classics, so we chose pieces with an extra layer of personality for a bespoke solution,” he says. One of these key objects is the LC2 Poltrona Armchair by Le Corbusier, Pierre Jeanneret and Charlotte Perriand in custom black velvet from Raf Simons. In a bid not to stray from the ebony and ivory, Niels was able to customise icons like the Multi-Lite Pendant by Gubi into an entirely white fixture. Niels measures the success of this regal project through his client’s most recent request; a summer home where he can again apply his precise and persuasive approach to design.
Wrapping the garden is the original city wall that Niels says dates back to 1148.

Edge of the World A Greek summer home set over two plateaus provides a lesson in architectural contrasts and parallels.
ARCHITECT OOAK Architects PHOTOGRAPHY Yiorgos Kordakis WORDS Annie Carroll
The landscape emerging from the south-eastern Aegean sea in Karpathos, Greece is wild and untamed and yet it’s here, among jagged rock and wind-battered brush that a Paris-based couple decided to lay down their roots with Patio House. Designed by Stockholm-based architecture studio OOAK (One Of A Kind), Patio House cantilevers delicately over a dramatic plot of land with direct views of the windsurfers on the beach of Afiarti. From the exterior, OOAK has managed to deftly showcase a distinct separation between the man-made and the organic. The house’s exterior is rendered in reinforced concrete forming clean lines that nestle gently against the salt-hewn rock face. Timber detailing on window frames and doors soften the exterior just enough to entice the question: what might lie within such a confident yet considered structure?
Inside, the brutalist architectural vernacular is tempered by signs of homely warmth, where plastered walls and stone floors offer a tactile riposte to the rugged terrain outside. The communal living areas are punctuated with flashes of colour like the soft moss green timber kitchen, a large red woven rug that anchors the living room and handpainted plates hanging over an oversized family dining table. Beneath the primary structure lies a second plateau, with a large outdoor terrace and theatrical dining spot.
But it’s the views from within the residence that command the most attention, formed through a tableau of windows ranging from floor-to-ceiling to smaller frames; each giving the illusion that the whole structure is floating over the ocean. The same composition is explored further through a large terrace that flows seamlessly from within the home’s living areas. With broad vistas over the sea and neighbouring coastline, this outdoor space blurs the limits between interior and exterior, inviting the owners to enjoy the harsh beauty of the landscape from a protected inner sanctum.
Over time, it’s easy to see how Patio House might become integrated into its environment, like a shell being absorbed into rock. Yet for now, OOAK has designed a framework that not only shelters its inhabitants but draws the jaw-dropping panoramas of the outside in.
With vistas overlooking the sea and neighbouring coastline, the outdoor space blurs the lines between interior and exterior living.
