Editor’s Letter Currently suffering from a bout of laryngitis I have been forced this week to contemplate just how important verbal communication is to me and how much I actually do like the sound of my own voice it would seem! While the rest of my family is happy for the silence, my frustration with not being able to contribute to dinner table conversation is sending me quietly mad. This enforced period of silence has reinforced for me the significance of communication and the way in which we express ourselves through any means. Whether this be with a glance of an eye
or in the way we style our homes, we give out signals to express ourselves so that others may in some way understand us. But while expressing ourselves is important, it’s essential that we feel as though somehow we’ve been heard.

SUBURBAN ELEGANCE Combining simple luxury with relaxed communal spaces, this Brisbane house is a home to grow up in. WORDS Melia Rayner | PHOTOGRAPHY Toby Scott
There is beauty in the simplest things – fresh grass underneath your feet, morning sunlight through windows, cooking a meal together. In their design for the Lockyer family, architects Paul Owen and Michael Lineburg drew inspiration from simple materials, landscapes and routines to create a beautiful yet functional family home. Situated on a large block, the brief was to utilise the landscape as much as possible, embracing outdoor living and green spaces, – ‘a house that was easy to live in’ - says owner Loren Lockyer. The design follows the external terrain across one level with open spaces to bring the interior and exterior together, most strikingly in the central living area. An entire wall is opened to meet the greenery outside; an atmosphere Loren describes where ‘you really feel you’re amongst everything’. The mother of three praises the design consideration of creating visibility throughout the structure, allowing her small children to have flexibility to utilise indoor and outdoor spaces whilst still being able to see their mum as they play. To support the function of the house, the floors and low wall datums are simply painted concrete, robust and in fitting with the natural landscape. The design also pays homage to classic Australian suburban features, infusing them with a modern touch to sit comfortably amongst the contemporary design. Painted concrete, brick and tile finishes are paired with glass, marble and brass to create a humble yet refined aesthetic. Loren says it all comes together beautifully, balancing her desires for practicality with an effortless luxury. ‘Even though it’s an amazing house, it’s a simple house – simple lines, simple materials, not pretentious. It’s a practical house and functions perfectly for us, and I’m sure as the children get older it will continue to support our lives perfectly.’

CREATING NEW HISTORY Classic and contemporary influences combine in transforming an historic 1930s house to a modern family home. WORDS Melia Rayner PHOTOGRAPHY Mark Roper
In reimagining a historic estate for the modern era, Rob Mills Architecture drew inspiration from the past whilst looking squarely toward the future. The result is Carrical House, an evocative design that balances the integrity of the original building with a bold visual language. The home retains much of the original architecture, utilising raw materials and elegant 1930’s details to create a heritage feel throughout. In highlighting these historic features, the design also pays homage to each space, curating an identity for each different room and its function. From the integration of modern technology in the kitchen to the elegant wood panelling that hides additional storage in the games room, each space has been considered for functionality and aesthetic appeal. The use of a striking blue palette throughout the home brings an assured modernity to each space, bringing it into the present with an elegant, timeless atmosphere. This signature blue is balanced by warm cream hues and timber and travertine floors, as well as a carefully curated selection of artworks, rugs and ornaments that add personality to each corner. Alongside retaining the standout features from the existing house, Rob Mills and his team were also commissioned to reimagine the home as a contemporary living space for the modern family. In doing so, they removed obsolete features such as an unused garage to increase living space, creating a new living area with plate glass doors open to the garden. And whilst careful attention has been paid to preserving the heritage of the building, there’s a sense of ease throughout the rooms, as soft textures, abounding natural light and design features create a welcoming atmosphere to each corner. With a proud, classic exterior and unexpected interior, Carrical House elegantly walks the fine line between refined and unexpected, functional yet beautiful. It’s a space to admire and a place to come home to.

SHELTER ISLAND A harbourside hideaway just two hours from of New York City plays weekend refuge for a designing English couple and their young family. WORDS Nicole Johnson | PHOTOGRAPHY OCHRE
Steering away from unnecessary flourishes, this 1970’s summer house built on Shelter Island in New York has been renovated by owners Harriet Maxwell Macdonald, designer and co-founder behind furniture brand Ochre, and husband Andrew Corrie, founder of Canvas Home. Clad in Cedar timber, what was once a humble two bedroom shack has since become a fivebedroom family home thanks to the English couple’s redesign and configuration. Using linens from Canvas Home in soft muted tones the interior has taken on a relaxed Scandinavian style character of its own with open plan spaces designed to capture the light and the views from every angle. In keeping with the original spirit of the home, reclaimed washed timber boards line the walls complimenting the bleached oak floorboards throughout. Furniture from Ochre has been used to soften the scheme with pieces like the Eternal Dreamer sofa and original prototypes of the Cloud light chandelier floating above a modern staircase of glass and timber. A restored bleached Steinway piano sits elegantly in the living room corner. With the help of a Brooklyn based metalsmith, Corrie designed a zinc counter and splashback for the kitchen. It’s imperfect indented surface contrasting with sleek Italian cabinetry and highly polished appliances while the Lacanche oven adds a nostalgic element to the well-organised layout. Harmonious proportions come together with matchless craftsmanship in the dining room. A duality between urban chic and relaxed country environment is achieved thorugh the selection of Wegner Wishbone chairs, a Jonathan Kline for Ochre chandelier and Canvas Home dining table. In the master bedroom a Canvas Home bed and side tables are offset by Scorpion wall lights from Ochre while the master ensuite features Vola tapware and custom made Emery & Cie wall and floor tiles. The Moroccan cement tile introduces the only pattern in the house adding further character and sense of individual style to the holiday house.

The window to the left of the bath offers a view over the secluded garden space outside and effectively allows the sunlight to pour in without compromising the privacy of the bathroom.
Top 3 Design Tips 1. CLEAN AND SIMPLE PALETTE The bathroom is a sanctuary and should feel peaceful and relaxing. 2. QUALITY FITTINGS AND FIXTURES Taps are such a strong element in this particular space, so quality is important. I’ve used the simple and almost undetectable SEN tapware and shelving range for all areas. 3. PRIORITISE STORAGE AND LIGHTING Lighting has been used both inside the cupboards and overhead along with the addition of some decorative wall lamps above the bath. The only way to keep a bathroom tidy is to ensure there is plenty of storage for all bathing essentials.

A MINIATURE MUSE Interior designer Cassie James-Herrick immerses herself in the world of designer furniture on a much smaller scale. PHOTOGRAPHY Chris Budgeon + Kate Collingwood
As the Creative Director of Beatrix Rowe Interior Design in Melbourne, Cassie James-Herrick has spent the past ten years working alongside Rowe in designing some of Melbourne’s most stylish homes. The birth of daughter Edie Alessandra and a need for a creative outlet while on maternity leave prompted the style discerning creative to design a doll house that she and her family might actually want to live in. “It was just a bit of fun for me to see what I could create as an extension of what I do,” explains James-Herrick. “I love what I do and I love specifying for a client. I’m constantly trawling blogs, magazines, online sources, anything and everywhere for inspirational imagery and beautiful products, memorising them in waiting for the right client and space to come along.” Working to a self prescribed brief entailing both minimal budget and a limited amount of time due to her maternity leave having come to an end, James-Herrick has created a doll house masterpiece that has enchanted both children and adults alike. Currently focused on producing her own custom designs in a bid to support local manufacturing, we can’t wait to see the release of the designers full scale size versions for us to fill our homes with.

INTO THE HEART OF AFRICA Sorris Sorris melts into the land like a mirage in the desert haze. If you make it far enough along a helter skelter road past stacks of Damaraland’s staple crimson boulders, you’ll reach an unexpected bolthole worthy of any adventurous design-lover’s little black book. WORDS Annie Biziou | PHOTOGRAPHY Oli Anderson
Sorris Sorris Lodge Owned by Namibia Exclusive, Sorris Sorris is the first of four ultra luxurious lodges to open in the isolated reaches of the African wilderness. Climb a staircase built from boulders to reach the main lodge zone, with its vast open-air restaurant bedecked in modern furniture with a hint of Scandinavian style. To one side is a firepit and seating zone, to the other, a geometric infinity pool at the edge of a sheer rock face. Every aspect is angled to make the most of a spellbinding view across the blood orange desert to the Brandberg, a huge mass of red rock once coveted by gemstone miners, which takes the crown for Namibia’s highest peak. Head down a wooden walkway to reach the nine individual suites tiered down the hillside, each one a palatial blush-hued facade set into the rock with floor-to-ceiling glass windows. Step inside and you’ll find a desert chic cabin decked in wide planks of pale wood.
A built in four poster bed swathed with creamy linens sets the scene, with seamless carved wood chairs upholstered in warm grays in the lounge. Just a few of steps up lies an open plan bathroom with matt resin vanities, an overhead rain shower and a bath with a view. Minimalism is key here – after all it’s all about drawing the eye to the outdoors. And as much as you might like to squirrel away in your Bond-worthy abode, at some point you’ll have to get out and explore as this Mars-like moonscape has more to offer than just a super stylish place to stay. Hop into one of Sorris Sorris’ souped up land rovers in the company of an expert guide and meander down to the Ugab riverbed, where mustard trees quench the desert with leafy sprays of vibrant green. Past the cracked mud huts of goat herders, with the blue hues of the Brandberg Massif shimmering in afternoon light, you might find yourself cocooned in thick long grasses, an oasis for the hardy desert elephants that call this harsh environment home. Sorris Sorris may be pared back in first glance, but its excellent food, faultless service and slew of surprises on the doorstep make this new lodge a designophiles delight in a setting like no other.
