Editors Letter It was 2 years ago that Lynda and I first dipped our toes into the waters of digital publishing and though it feels like only yesterday that we took that massive leap into the unknown, at the same time it feels as though there was no life before Est Magazine. We have come so far. We have loved connecting with a like-minded audience as much as we have loved collaborating to produce content with creatives worldwide. We are thrilled to call them good friends as well as colleagues. In Issue #9 of Est Magazine we are excited to be launching our Closet Covet series. Our first feature has us stepping inside the wardrobe and home of ex Melbourne fashion editor for Vogue Australia, Anthea O’Connor. With a sophisticated style that belies a madcap, laugh-a-minute personality, Anthea shows us the pieces that she is can’t live without, from the artwork received from muchloved friends to a pair of shoes that are the ‘perfect shade of sludgy olive green to go with everything’. We also get an exclusive look into the home of renowned homewares emporium curator Hillary Gwillam of Manon, as well as travelling to the home and vibrant foodie haven based in the foothills of Table Mountain in South Africa’s Capetown, where the colour green clearly takes centre stage. In fact in this issue, green is the predominant hue, whether it’s a sludgy grey green, pale eucalypt or in the case of the Capetown home, vibrant emerald green. As a digital magazine we may just be a little drawn to all the properties of green and its meaning, both literally and figuratively.
You may have noticed too that we have ramped up our daily posts on the Est website, and we are now sharing more content that comes across our desk each week in between each quarterly Est Magazine issue, with the release of our new Est Mini editions that make their way into your inboxes each and every Friday. We are loving that we are connecting with our readers more and more across social channels such as instagram, pinterest, twitter and facebook, giving us an insight into your world and how it looks to you. We have also acted on your request for more hyperlinking throughout both the magazine and website, and we are thrilled to be now offering you more opportunities to research, explore and store your information and inspiration than ever before. Enjoy!

PS Thank you to all that took part in our Reader Survey and a big congratulations to the winners. Your detailed feedback is very much appreciated and made excellent reading. One thing we did hear loud and clear from you all was that you do LOVE shoes! Who would have thought?

Given the current global appreciation for all things pastel, we asked Danish photographer Stephan Schnedler-Sørensen and stylist Denis Bjerregaard to show us how we can incorporate the dusty tones of terracotta and copper in small ways into our homes. Or for those drawn to the power of the blue punch, the creative duo show us how really embrace the lift that blue can give to any interior scheme. Timber, brass, stone, wool and leather of course keep the colour scheme grounded - as only natural elements can.
“I think Jamin bags are like little pieces of wearable art, and really like the fact they aren’t slathered in logos - they are just beautifully crafted individual pieces. I hope my daughter will appreciate the collection she will inherit! My husband chose the green evening bag as an anniversary present, I love the fact he chose it.

editors edit As the former Melbourne Editor of Vogue Australia and fashion presenter on what was the Network Ten’s, The Circle, its fair to say that this fashion stylista knows her Balenciaga from her Vuitton and can spot a knock off within a nano second. PHOTOGRAPHY Armelle Habib | STYLING Sian MacPherson OPPOSITE PAGE Stainless table from an old hospital commercial kitchen, we have dragged it to three houses much to the horror of the removalists. Jamin Puech tan and olive green bags. Zimmermann clutch - more olive and tan!! They are my two “go to colours” as they go with everything!! The bangles are a mix of things, but the Hermes enamel one was a birthday gift from my sisters. Antique timber vessel - one of my first home-ware purchases, my boys use it as a mini skateboarding ramp for their toy skateboards when I am not looking. Calvin Klein suede ankle boots. I am in danger of wearing these out and getting yet more Topy applied to the sole, great with jeans and pants, my regular uniform. ARTWORK by Katie Carmichael. She is a really good friend and an incredibly talented photographic artist, her landscape pieces are breathtaking and I love having something created by a friend in my home.

Emma Gale has burst onto the Australian art scene with vibrant works of rich, colourful hues, depicting animals and famous faces. PHOTOGRAPHY Mindi Cooke Chances are you’ll recognize Emma’s work from recent home features in Est, and we are betting you are going to see a whole lot more from this much loved artist in coming months. With an upcoming exhibition at Fenton & Fenton in Melbourne, don’t say we didn’t warn you to get in quick when her works come to town. We visited her impeccably renovated Bangalow home to discover that she is not only one of Australia’s most sought after artists, but a savvy business woman, devoted mum and incredible colourist. A winning combination it seems.

Throughout my university years, I spent weekends working at a beautiful homewares store. My intentions were good: I’d earn the money I needed to sustain my social life. The reality was different: I spent my entire wage on the beautiful design pieces I’d see in the shop. Talking to Manon Bis owner Hilary Gwillim, I marvel how she maintains control. “I tend to not have one of everything like I did it at the beginning but I do occasionally order an extra one of something for myself,” she admits with a smile. In true country pub style, the Railway Hotel in Newstead opens “sporadically” and when he was lucky Hatton would finish his day collecting willow with a beer, overlooking the rural Victorian town and, in particular, the 1904-constructed treasure that would one day be his home. Global Roaming Blogs are an endless source of fascination for us. We come across so many talented writers, style curators, and opinion shapers that we can’t help but to lose ourselves in a digital tour of the globe. Here are some that make us laugh, inspire us to travel and flame our fires for far away lands. Jason Hudson Beautiful imagery and a keen eye for observation has us turning to Jason Hudson’s blog when looking to feed our travel bug. This Canadian photographer has taken a year long sabbatical to tour the world as part of his self titled ‘eat, gay, love’ adventure. Starting in New Zealand in February, then to Australia and over to Bali, Jason plans to go to India, then Paris in July with the rest of the tour yet to be decided. You really must check this one out if looking to blog about your own travels or just to seek inspiration on how to travel the world. An Affair with Italy Fashion photographer Julie Adams and Emma Scott, a writer and designer, both share a passion for Italy. So naturally the next step was to create a blog and share the stories of like minded, passionate people from around the world, who are also share a love affair with the home of pasta, fabulous coastlines and Prada. You will fall in love with Italy all over again after touring this blog - bellisimo. Unhappy Hipsters With a moniker of “It’s lonely in the modern world”, this amusing blog sources the globe for fantastic home and design imagery to basically take the mickey out of it. A little along the lines of the fuckyournomaguchi blog, Unhappy Hipsters uses irreverent observations about the image subject for our amusement. Note to never take the image caption too seriously!
