Course Type: Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx)

Length: 2 years, part-time

Entry Requirements: You must hold one of the following:

> CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice

> Or BA (Hons) in Law

If you have an LLB in Law you may be eligible to complete the one-year Level 6 ‘Fast-Track Diploma’.

The CILEx certificate in Legal Practice represents the final academic stage towards becoming a Chartered Legal Executive.

Building on the CILEx Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice, students are required to demonstrate a broad and detailed understanding of the law in three specific areas. There is also a focus on the professional aspects of the role and assessment on practical application. This course is perfect for someone who wants to become a Chartered Legal Executive or a

Fellow of CILEx or for someone who wants to further their position in the workplace.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

The CILEx certificate in Legal Practice consists of six units* in total, three of which will be chosen law units and one practice unit which links to one (or more) of the law units, e.g. Contract Law and Civil Litigation or Criminal Law and Criminal Litigation. You will also need to complete two legal skills units, Client Care and Legal Research. There are a total of 14 law units to choose from including, but not limited to, Land Law, Tort Law, Immigration Law and Employment Law. Your unit options will be discussed at the interview stage.

HOW AM I ASSESSED?

You will be assessed by a mixture of external examinations and written coursework. You will sit exams in January and June in any one academic year.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Usually students will be working in a law firm or legal department as a Chartered Legal Executive upon completion of this course. Other students have gone on to do more academic studies, such as an LPC. Chartered Legal Executives can then apply to become Fellows once they have completed the relevant work-based training element.

CILEx Professional Qualification foundation stage

Course Type: Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx)

Length: 18 months, part-time evening classes

Entry Requirements: GCSE English and maths. By the end of the course you will need to have secured relevant work experience.

The Foundation Stage of the CILEx Professional Qualification (CPQ) is the first stage of professional training to becoming a CILEx Paralegal, CILEx Advanced Paralegal or CILEx Lawyer.

The Foundation Stage of the CPQ is broken down into three elements: core legal knowledge, practice and skills; ethics and professional responsibility; and professional experience.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

As part of your academic study you will need to complete five mandatory modules:

> Legal Systems

> Contract Law

> Law of Tort

> Introduction to Property and Private Client

> Professional and Legal Skills

In addition, you will be required to evidence your competence via a professional experience portfolio, carried out with a legal employer, and complete the first ethics and professional responsibility e-learning module. Please note, there is no requirement for you to be working in the legal sector when first embarking on the CPQ Foundation Stage. However, in order to complete the full qualification, you will need to have secured some work experience which covers the requirements of the professional experience element of the programme.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Graduates of the Foundation Stage will be able to hold the professional status of CILEx Paralegal. CILEx Paralegals can then progress onto the CILEx Professional Qualification –Advanced Stage to complete further training and begin specialising in a chosen legal area. Course Type: Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx)

Length: 2 years, part-time evening classes

Entry Requirements: Foundation stage CPQ or old level 2 diploma

The Advanced Stage of the CILEx Professional Qualification (CPQ) is the second stage of professional training to becoming a CILEx Advanced Paralegal or CILEx Lawyer.

Those of you who have a qualifying law degree will be able to start your CILEx training on the CPQ Advanced Stage. Successful completion of the CPQ Advanced Stage will qualify you as a CILEx Advanced Paralegal. Following on from this you will be able to progress onto the CPQ Professional Stage to become a CILEx Lawyer.

WHAT WILL I STUDY?

As part of your academic study you will need to complete four mandatory modules:

> Professional and Legal Skills

> Dispute Resolution and Litigation

> Criminal Law and Litigation

> Property and Conveyancing

In addition, you will be required to select at least one optional module from the following:

> Business and Employment Law

> Family Law and Practice

> Wills, Probate and Private Client

You will be required to evidence your competence via a professional experience portfolio, carried out with a legal employer, and complete the second ethics and professional responsibility e-learning module. If you have not completed the Foundation Stage of CPQ you will also be required to complete the first ethics and responsibilities module in order to progress.

WHAT’S NEXT?

Graduates of the Advanced Stage will be able to hold the professional status of CILEx Advanced Paralegal and will become a regulated Fee Earner. CILEx Advanced Paralegals can then progress onto the CILEx Professional Qualification – Professional Stage to complete further training to become a CILEx Specialist Lawyer.
