LIVING THE GOOD LIFE When I caught up with Shambhala Farm’s Craig Hubbard, he was amongst the freshly tilled rows of his 10 acre farm in Doonan. It’s here that Craig and partner Jemma Edwards grow over 50 leafy greens and vegetable varieties and run their co-op paddockto-plate home delivery service FarmBox. “Ingesting nutrient rich greens … allows you to tap into the energy of food in its natural state,” enthused Craig, who added, “My life’s aim is to find ways to get leafy greens into people.” After moving from Sydney to Maleny, the couple were taken under the wing of sustainable farmer Jim Hunt. “Jim taught us everything he knew; the grass roots organic growing approach, how to maximize the growing potential of the land and how to distribute what was grown at the weekend Noosa Farmers markets,” Craig explained. Jemma and Craig learned fast and began their own label Maleny Wholefoods. In 2011 however, they decided to buy

an old lettuce farm in Doonan and relocate with their young children, Isaiah and Kaia. Jemma explained they swapped green hills for square paddocks but the spirit of Shambhala remained the same - a journey towards a way of enlightenment. “Originating from a Tibetan/ Buddhist background, this name inspires us daily to live a higher way and gives us purpose behind how we live,” Jemma shared. It’s the same resolve that saw the couple weather out the bitter blow of losing 90% of crops, possessions and their income two summers running – with the last flood being in 2013. Craig said, “It was that adversity that drove us to forge a culture based support from our community and our regular 14 employees.” “We were people working together for a greater good which led us to form a co-op with local growers,” Craig explained while looking out over the rows of 10,000 hand planted seedlings in their rich

humus beds. By teaming up with other growers, Shambhala can ensure that organic crops they can’t produce can still be accessed by customers who want to know the source and story behind their food. Natural propagating and polycropping are also a priority for the couple. Craig explained that by choosing to plant 40 varieties on their Doonan farm which once only grew lettuces encourages birds, animals, bugs and bacteria to create an eco-system that builds its own defence mechanisms against wide spread pests and disease. Instead of chemical sprays they use marigolds to stand sentry as a natural pesticide and the couple have opted for their own bespoke mix of nitrogen nutrients; such as vegetable waste, chicken poo, local Eerwah Vale dairy manure, old fish from Noosa’s Spanner Crabs and woodchips

Craig, Jemma and their farmhands are out in the fields by 5am weeding, mulching and harvesting and afternoons are then spent with the logistics of getting their produce and that of their 36 fellow co-op Cont’d on p 18

for fertiliser - instead of turning to synthetic alternates. “That way we’re creating a billion micro-organisms in a teaspoon – a universe in the cup of your hand. When you add this to the soil, you don’t need chemicals to artificially create the right conditions to grow crops. This is not a new technique – it’s tapping into millennia old traditions which mimic nature and protecting the life span of the soil in a sustainable way,” Craig explained.

C hamber ’ s A G M The Eumundi Chamber of Commerce (ECC) breakfast last Friday included their annual general meeting for 2015, with Andy Dudas re-elected as president after a very positive year of achievement for ECC. Milestones included a new edition of the popular seven days in Eumundi brochure - with more than 150,000 now printed over four years; quality guest speakers within the breakfast briefing format; a new website; solid membership growth; participation in the “Buy Local” campaign; support of important events such as Christmas Carols and the ANZAC 100 years commemoration. Guest speaker

for Friday’s breakfast, Sandy Zubrinich, Chair of the Sunshine Coast Business Council, spoke about Business Council’s role in advocacy on the Coast and also in sustaining job growth - particularly addressing the Sunshine Coast’s 14% youth unemployment - via support of key projects. This August, ECC will host the first of two evening networking nights. Cr Stephen Rob inson

Jan O’Halloran Politicians as well as celebrity Dawn Fraser and members of the community who have assisted with the funding of the Riding for the Disabled (RDA) roof project, were on hand in North Arm at the ‘Roof Wetting’ ceremony during National Volunteer’s Week.

Division 9 not in use by RDA. Volunteers were celebrated at the event as well, with Dawn awarding years of service pins. Congratulations to June Bedville for a special Life Membership Award for her 25 years with RDA. The wonderful bunch of volunteers provided a sumptuous morning tea.

President Matty Sormani was effusive in her thanks to the long list of all who helped with fundraising, grant writing, donations, construction, “in kind” donations and volunteer hours. The Rural Fire Brigade provided the “roof wetting” by turning the hoses on. The roof covers a 30 x 80m arena, plus a proposed clubhouse building, and will be of immense value to riders and volunteers alike, both in the wet and extreme heat. It will also be available to hire when

DOO WOP DOLLS The Doo Wop Dolls present A Vaudeville Affair at the Eumundi School of Arts for a wonderful night of entertainment. This show is a celebration of love and creative inspiration by a talented group of locals who will entertain you with a fun filled night of many and varied sensational performances. The Rotary Club of Eumundi will be a beneficiary of the show. The Doo Wop Dolls were highly acclaimed and well accepted during their performance at The Eumundi School of Arts ANZAC Centenary Ball and also at The Katie Rose Hospice long lunch held in March.

What a joy it was to be part of the official opening of the Artisans Gallery at Eumundi. Owners David and Cindy Suters have designed and built a contemporary gallery space. It was great to see so much support for this new gallery at its official opening which was complemented by some wonderful food and stunning artwork. I encourage everyone who has an interest in arts and crafts to go along and enjoy what our local artists have to offer.

Roof wetting ceremony Cr Rogerson and I recently attended the roof wetting ceremony for Sunshine Coast Riding For the Disabled. The construction of the roofed riding arena for the disabled has been an unbelieveable achievement for President Matty Sormani and her hard working committee and volunteers. It was very clear to see the kids loved the new facility and enjoyed the experience. A big congratulations to everyone involved!

A wonderful cause Recently I took the opportunity to visit Katie Rose Cottage for a tour and to talk to the wonderful staff and volunteers of this essential community service. I was inspired by the compassion of all involved at the cottage in making the patients’ lives as comfortable as possible. I’m proud of the Eumundi and District community for its support of the Katie Rose Cottage and its role in looking after those in need.

Another great outcome Cr Rogerson and I also attended the new building opening at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre. This project has been a long time in the making but will provide an important addition to the cultural and artistic pursuits of the community. Project manager Dr Sue Campin and EHA President Donata Page and volunteers have achieved an extraordinary outcome for our community.

Melissa Isles The Eumundi Community bus will be available on the night so please take advantage of this wonderful service on 0488 322 323.

Community NEW LIFE FOR OLD SITE The new owners of the residential ‘Avonlea’ property that boarders Cook St and Old Caplick Way will begin work on the site in the next few months. The Schwartz family sold the five acre property to the Deverill family with an approved subdivision of nine residential blocks late last year. The new owners are keen to keep the township block’s semi-rural feel so will limit the subdivision to just four sights - which includes one on which they’ll build their family home. Council had identified weed species such as Camphor Laurel and Pine trees, some of which will be removed and replaced by natives. This includes some of the pines that border Cook

St. A retaining wall will be built to stabilise the bank and any removed trees replanted with natives. Owner Jo Deverill said, “We are going to do the very best for this property both environmentally and architecturally.” In keeping with their desire to do the site justice, as well as develop the land’s natural integrity and honour its past, the Deverill’s have engaged award winning architect Jolyon Robinson of Eumundi’s Robinson Architects to design their new home. The former Avonlea House originally built by the Arundel family and tragically burnt down six years ago, was once the family home to the Robinson’s. Jolyon

sees this as a chance to make this beautiful spot somewhere for families to enjoy again. “It’s an exciting opportunity to be part of the next chapter for the site,” Jolyon shared. The Deverill’s are determined that the architecture and native flora marry together effortlessly. Jolyon said the Deverill’s have been approached by a number of builders keen to develop the site but explained that’s not why they bought the property. “The couple are not developers and plan to call Eumundi home for keeps.” “Together, we want to see the best possible outcome for

the site and the town,” Jolyon explained. For this reason the three blocks are not on the open market. Instead, expressions of interest are being sought from like-minded people that may be interested in having an architecturally designed house built on one of sites. “We’re not talking high-end here, rather well designed appropriate and affordable housing”, Jolyon said. Expressions of interest regarding these residential blocks can be made via Robinson’s Architects at jolyon@ robinsonarchitects.com.au.

P U B L I C S PA C E H O L D S 1 S T E X H I B I T I O N Wendy Birrell, DE Manager History was created in Eumundi on Monday 18 May with the official opening of the new arts space at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre (DE). After four years of community effort to find the funding, a successful federal government grant saw the building come to fruition with additional support and funding by the Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA) which oversees the running of Discover Eumundi.

2006. Community consultation meetings were held and a small regional arts development grant saw some drawings and plans used when applying for the first unsuccessful major federal grant attempt in 2011/12. Finally success with a federal government grant in 2013 saw the project valued at $250K finally start in late 2014. It will provide workshop, meeting and exhibition space for DE and locals.

Senator James McGrath cut the red ribbon to open the building watched by an enthusiastic crowd which included three Sunshine Coast councillors and many who had been part of the journey. The building opened with an exhibition of colourful artworks by local artist Colin Crawford.

Discover Eumundi will soon be calling for expressions of interest from local artists to exhibit in the new space as well as interest from the public to use the facility for meetings and workshops which fit the criteria being developed for the use of the building.

The idea of adding an extension to what was not that long ago known as the Eumundi Museum, has been discussed for many years, but came to a head after the EHA commissioned a survey and report on the building in

Arts E x hibition capt u res O E M characters

They are the artists and designers who put the Eumundi Markets on the map as Australia’s premier artisan market, and it’s now their turn be celebrated in this portrait exhibition by local photographer Alain Bouvier. Entitled ‘Market Characters - Make it, Bake it, Sew it, Grow it’, the exhibition will open Sat 30 May at the new gallery and workshop space at Discover Eumundi Heritage & Visitor Centre (DE) and continue until Friday 24 July. Market Manager Daniel West said, “We wanted to really acknowledge the makers and creators – the talented people who make the products that put Eumundi on the map as the best market in Australia, and one of the best in the world.” “These are the chefs, growers, craftspeople, potters, metalworkers, wellness practitioners, masseuses, fashionistas, woodworkers, painters, jewellers, entertainers and musicians that make Eumundi so very special – the people that bring so much colour and so many tourists to our village every week,” Daniel shared.

Photographer Alain Bouvier captured the photos over many months, and said, “I only wanted to focus on stallholders who are hands-on involved in the creation of their market products. Time permitted me to photograph 80 of these ‘market characters’ for the exhibition - there’s so much local talent on the Coast!” “I also have a deep respect for the market camaraderie and the support these artists have for one other – not to mention their energy in rising so early every Wednesday and Saturday to set up their stalls for business!,” Alain shared. The Exhibition is also seen as important from a cultural heritage perspective by DE Manager Wendy Birrell. “It is very important to continually capture the history of such a large and significant Sunshine Coast event as the Eumundi Markets for future researchers, family historians, students and other interested people to be able to access. These photos will be a fabulous resource in years to come,” Wendy said.

Kids THE LAND OF NOD I don’t know about you, but since becoming a parent 18 years ago I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about sleep. Trying to get babies to sleep and now trying to get teenagers to wake up, although after reading new research into the teenage brain I’ve decided to let them sleep a little bit more. How a child sleeps has to do with many factors. These include individual personalities, routine, family life, activities and diet. Children aged six to 13 years require between nine to 11 hours sleep. What may surprise people is that teenagers need just as much. Teenager’s body clocks are also changing during adolescence, which explains why they stay up later and find it hard to wake up early. Their brains have so much going on and there are so many hormonal changes happening they really do need to sleep. Adequate sleep

Sam Sutherland

is required for optimal brain and body functions, and families need to take this, and the pressures of the modern world, into account. Some families work on sleep debt, which is when they “go-go” all week and catch up on sleep and rest during the weekend, unfortunately this doesn’t help as we need regular sleep patterns. Research tells us that on weekends and holidays we shouldn’t sleep later than an hour or go to bed one or two hours from our normal sleep time. We often associate sleep deprivation with torture for new mums and dads, but unfortunately just an hour or two less of sleep each night can significantly impact us in a very real and negative way. This is especially true for children and teenagers as they require adequate rest to process information, problem solve and determine important information against insignificant junk that

our senses absorb. Adequate sleep regulates hormones in the body, helps us to react quickly and respond appropriately. Proper sleep also impacts on our mental and emotional health. Lack of sleep wears our brain out and increases our chances of depression. SCREEN TIME As families we need to limit screens in the bedroom, this includes phones, tablets, computers and televisions. Some families make everyone (parents included) leave their phones in the kitchen so they cannot be tempted to google something, check facebook or play one last game. WHOLE FOODS Limit processed, sugary foods as much as possible and eat a diet based on real whole foods. Dinner time needs to be earlier

rather than later for a couple of reasons; eating earlier allows your body to digest your meal before it moves into a time of healing and processing so therefore allows it to fall into sleep easier. Set up a bedtime routine that includes winding down, no screen time just before bed and set bedtimes, eating clean whole foods, and learning to relax, meditate, read. Eat dinner at an earlier time as often as possible, spend time in nature in natural sunlight (this assists the body clock), try not to exercise too late in the evening and sleep in a cool, dark room.

Sport GIRL GUIDES

Leo Wiles

The scouts may have “Dibdib, dob-dob”, but the Girl Guides moto is “Guides can do anything”. A goal made much easier with the resurrection of the local Guide group late last year by the Cooroy District’s provisional leader Della (Bunyip) van der Heijden. Fed up with driving to Gympie Guides and determined to offer her daughter Alana and other local girls the chance to learn about teamwork, leadership and community service in a safe all female environment, Della resurrected the Cooroy patrol that laid dormant for six years. Meeting each Thursday during term time, girls come from all over the Hinterland to take part in the weekly meets from 4.30 – 6.30pm.

When I went along to the unit hut in Miva St, there were 18 girls participating in a range of activities including a treasure hunt, various crafts and games. What these happy, young women don’t realise is that they are in fact learning the art of mateship and leadership. “It’s the best thing I have ever done, making friends and having fun,” laughed Pip, one of the seven year-old Eumundi members who will be helping to man the Guides cookie stall fundraiser outside Cooroy IGA on Sat 30 May and Sat 20 June. Guides offer a 4-week trial so you can try all the activities before making the decision to join. Leonora Cox 0425 850 360 or leonora.cox@gmail.com

DRAGONS ROAR IN FRONT OF H O M E C R O W D Scott Thompson It was a joy last weekend to watch a young Dragons Rugby team perform so well in front of their home crowd at the Eumundi Showgrounds. Last Saturday Dragons Rugby hosted round three of the SCRU Junior Rugby Competition and what a day it was for the young Dragons teams. The under 7’s would have to be the happiest team on the coast, never have I seen a team smile and love playing with their friends so much. They were just great, flying over the field, ball in hand and huge smiles on their faces. The fact that they had just played a hard fought draw only heightened their excitement, especially as it was against the same team that beat them by four tries the weekend before. The team’s improvement has been immense. While the 7’s may be the happiest team on the coast the under 11’s would have to be the most hard working! They are an absolute delight to coach, bursting with enthusiasm and steely determination. To top it off they are all great mates. They were dynamite on the weekend outlasting a massive Maroochydore team to win 3328. The Dragons hardworking forward pack worked themselves to a standstill providing good clean ball and regularly rumbling up the field for 10 phases. On the back of their hard work the speedy backs dominated,

Lachlan Back was sensational, scoring four tries as he dazzled the Swans with power and speed. It was a terrific win for a hardworking team. It is a pleasure watching these two teams bond and grow as young men. The benefits of playing a team sport in a small local team are huge. The boys really are very close, the parents supportive and the coaching staff amazing. The Dragons are always looking for new players to learn the game, have some fun and grow as a person. Being located at the Eumundi Showgrounds is an absolute blessing, it is easy to get to training and the ground is picture perfect when hosting home games. We can’t wait for this week’s games and would love you to be a part of our club.

Health WILD FOOD AND MEDICINE Wild crafting is simply collecting wild plants for use as food and medicine. I was wild crafting long before I knew there was a name for it. My mother used to collect edible weeds and herbs, which she used in our meals. I remember one particular meal on a camping trip from when I was about four or five years old consisting of cottage cheese made from milk from a nearby dairy that was hung in some cloth from a tree, yabbies from the creek and wild thistles from the paddock. It was not until I began my training as a naturopath and medical herbalist that I learned there was not only a name for what my mum used to do, there were also tremendous nutritional and medicinal benefits to it. Weeds contain many more

Heidi Merika, Naturopath

vitamins and minerals and much more protein than cultivated vegetables, they are abundant, require no effort to grow, cost nothing and are found everywhere. In times of economic and environmental instability being able to identify and use these super foods provides a feeling of security and trust in nature. According to the World Health Organisation, in parts of Asia and Africa as much as 80% of the population still practice wild crafting as a primary means of obtaining food and medicine. Here on the Sunshine Coast so many of the plants we consider noxious weeds have either medicinal or nutritional uses. For example the ubiquitous Cobblers Pegs Bindens pilosa, known by most of us as that irritating plant that covers us in spiky little black

seed heads that are a nightmare to remove from our clothes and animals, actually contains vitamin C, calcium, iron and magnesium and has antimicrobial properties making it useful for bacterial infections of the respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. The fresh young leaves can be eaten raw in salads, cooked as a green vegetable or dried and stored for future use as a tea. As a herbalist this practice has always held a special place for me. I consider it to be “real” herbalism. In clinical practice, due to issues with consistency of supply we tend to rely on packaged and manufactured

products. I consider it an important part of my work to be able to share this knowledge with my community so that this important knowledge is not lost and can be passed on to future generations. Heidi will be running a Wild Crafting workshop on 27 - 28 June. consciousnutrition.com.au.

Living S tarting a separation Separation and divorce is not easy for anyone. Over the past five years I have heard the same misconceptions as well as the same fears regarding taking the plunge and making steps to leave a relationship. These include: • The law is weighted in the women’s favour. • I can’t afford to leave. • I should stay for the children. • Child support costs a fortune. • What is a financial separation is it a divorce? • It’s not all bad - if I give it another chance things might change. • I haven’t been in the work force for years - no one will give me a job. • I’m too old to do this. • My church won’t approve. In my experience, men tend to regain their self-esteem and cope extremely well once they have a plan and know what’s going on. When the emotional element is removed they get back on track sooner, and these days it is not uncommon to hear about men sharing 50/50 care of their children, balancing work and

home life very successfully. Women tend to be open to change and are either entering the work force by retraining, or returning to tertiary education from TAFE courses and in some cases going to university for that degree they didn’t think was possible. We also have many female clients starting new business ventures. People embarking on a separation are from all walks of life and ages too; my youngest client was 28 and so far my oldest was 80 years old. One of the saddest stories I heard was from a friend whose 85 year old mother who said on her death bed, “Well that was a waste of time.” She had married at 19, then spent her whole life wishing her husband would either leave her or die. He did neither - he outlived her. My advice is don’t waste one day of your precious life in any situation which does not encourage you to be the best person you can be and does not make your life a happy one. Seek help from people who know how, care for you and have your best interests at heart.

Outdoors EUMUNDI FIRE BRIGADE NEWS

The cooler weather is upon us already and we humans are already stoking up fires and enjoying barbeques. However many creatures are also wanting to find warmth and safety in a world that frankly lacks affordable animal housing. Many mammals, snakes and lizards both large and small, seek warmth in roof cavities if on offer. Possums however are on another more mobile level. Gill recently had a brush tailed possum brought in who was hiding in a barbeque when the owner lit the fire. Luckily the possum was rescued, and apart from some sizzled whiskers, it will make a full recovery. I’d like to thank that owner who made the effort to bring the possum to Gill to have it checked out. The incident reminds me of an earlier episode several years ago when homeowners knew a possum lived in their chimney flue and decided to smoke out the possum. The result was a female possum that subsequently died from smoke inhalation, leaving a little joey to be brought up by carers. Home owners really have a duty of care to make sure their homes are secure and chimneys have a wire screen of

some sort to keep possums and other creatures out. I had a wildlife moment last week when “our” monitor lizard Doris made her way down the downpipe near our front door. This is our only downpipe that doesn’t have a leaf-guard on it. Earlier Doris had been sunbaking on our solar panels. The next day I bought a leaf-guard and had a plumber come to check out the pipe and remove the hapless lizard and install said leafguard. Luckily she must have done a U-turn and wasn’t to be seen but the lesson was learnt. Gill has had a large influx of joeys brought to the Centre following car strikes. PLEASE slow down as it is now dark earlier and wallabies and roos are on the roads earlier as well. Also please check pouches if you see a roo or wallaby hit on the road and bring any joeys to the Centre as soon as possible.

We are lucky to have such fantastic resources and people in our small town. The job of fighting bushfires is physically demanding. On the back of our truck are two 50m long hoses that need to be dragged through the bush or across paddocks, full of water, often connected together with other lengths of hose, in hot, smoky, rough, scrubby terrain. The hoses are retrieved, stowed, we move and it’s repeated again – and again. So our brigade decided that physical fitness forms a big part of our capability. There’s no point in showing up to a fire in our truck only to be gasping for a breath 10 minutes later. With this in mind we approached the Eumundi Swim and Gym for help. They were only too happy to contribute. We have come to an arrangement that means our active brigade members can

use the gym and pool facilities at no cost to themselves. So we have the epitome of small town community wellbeing in action: one community resource helping out another. In keeping with this ideal we have a few ideas on how the brigade resources can be better utilised in broader support to the community – provision of welfare services during storm events for example. But we don’t pretend to have a monopoly on ideas. If you have any suggestions give First Officer Duncan Sayers a ring on 5442 7900 or pop into the Napier Rd HQ.

Breeds like Dorper shed their own wool! Even though mine are all bottle fed, they can become timid if you don’t keep up the contact every day. They follow their flock, so once one gets scared they all run for it!

I’m known as the chook lady by most locals and it seems fitting as I am surrounded by a menagerie of chickens and I have the surname HENning. However, I also have a hobby farm that includes a little bit more than hens. Creating the hobby farm has been an exciting, exhausting but very rewarding experience. I have always been very passionate about animals and my five acre property is the home to many amazing four legged animals including: sheep, goats, cows, alpacas and pigs! My animals all live in harmony together and all do their bit to help out on the farm. That’s right, they pay their way to some degree by mowing, turning garden beds, weed control, and of course, manure. The best advice I can give when starting out is don’t rush into it until you have the basics in place. This includes appropriate fencing for different animals, paddocks to rotate animals to new pasture, dry feed storage, lockable night/weather shelters and water and feed troughs. Animals take time, money and attention, especially if you want farm animals that are tame pets. Most of my animals have been with me since they were very young babies and on bottles three times a day. They respond to their names and they know what NO means. Having babies is full on with early starts, lunchtime feeds and some late nights for up to six months. If this isn’t for you, then buying young animals that are weaned, but hand-raised, would be a better option.

PERSONALITY: My miniature goats are my best buddies and all with defined personalities. Properly housed goats won’t eat your washing or roses and it is important to remove toxic weeds and trees from their environment. Fencing is critical as goats climb, jump and go under. Shelter is also critical as goats hate getting wet. PROTECTORS: My alpacas are the most caring animals I have ever met and will take on sheep and goats as their own and scare off predators. I once lost my week old angora and I finally found him lying in between the two alpacas fast asleep. HUMOUR HOE: My pigs add humour to the farm and are the cause of several household arguments. As week old babies they are so tiny and can be cuddled and hand washed. As 6 month olds they still think they are babies but with a turn of the head can send you flying! Pigs are highly intelligent animals and they love to dig like a hoe. They need a secure enclosure that would be suitable for an elephant and fencing concreted into the ground! Jasper would lift up his metal shelter in one simple push and then start running around the farm (hence the cause of several arguments!). Rupert my miniature pig loves tag and Warwick and Shirley are only a month old but oh so cute! I just have to mention my chickens as some love to preen my sheep and my pet duck, Zylon, likes to pull Rupert’s tail! www.citychicks.com.au and www.oldmacfarms.com.au

Naming of the building At the recent opening, Kabi Kabi indigenous elder (or custodian) as Auntie Beverly Hand likes to refer to herself announced the name for the building she suggested for us. It will now be referred to as ‘Wan’din’in - a Kabi Kabi word meaning ‘a gathering of people’.

Discover Eumundi is a ‘keeping place’ for indigenous artifacts and has signed agreements with elders to caretake these items - so we feel its a very appropriate name.

Letters Cont’d from p 6 locals, including bread and dairy products ready, for their Saturday home delivery service or preparing to go to market. “We live a good simple life and work hard – most days are pretty big days with their own natural rhythm,” shrugged Craig. Craig and Gemma feel there’s an urgent need for more local, sustainable farms like Shambhala to create seed banks to protect endangered

varieties of foods as well as protect local growers from the stranglehold of Woolworths [39%] and Coles [33.5%] who together command 72.5% of Australian groceries worth $82 billion per annum [According to Roy Morgan analysis released in February 2014]. The couple are trying to establish a community of local food security and resilience where the growers have a voice and a trusted path of distribution. “People are in danger of forgetting how to grow with hundreds of farms closing each week, but there is a small band of farmers around the globe trying to prevent this, and I’m proud to say we’re one of them.” Virtual Press Office Photography 0409 773 787.

J U S T O N E B I G C O FF E E S H O P Now that the butcher and newsagency have closed we only have to lose the chemist and Eumundi will just be one big coffee shop. Doug Vowell, Eumundi.

What you’re saying on Facebook …

Eumundi recession? My wife Clare and l [recently visited Eumundi and walked] through town and had a coffee there. l knew your butcher had moved out (we’d used Eumundi Meats for ‘special occasion’ tucker), but what happened to the newsagents? One or two other empty bits too - are we having another recession no one’s told me about? Let me know, eh, as a way back resident! Steve Stevenson. Jo Wiersma: We do appear to provide ample coffees - just no newspaper to enjoy with your cuppa! Kym Sheppard: Sad to see so many businesses closing or for sale. Eumundi needs more sustainable businesses that don’t rely on Market Days. What can we do to see Eumundi full of thriving

businesses? What other businesses do we need to encourage so people don’t drive out of town to do their shopping? Sarah Racheal Rose: We need to make Eumundi a six day a week town again. We need facilities so people come here rather than Noosa. A grocery store would be great. We also need to support local. Let’s face it, without supporting the local businesses they can’t survive. Sandy Cameron: Why do all towns need to look the same? Supermarkets are out dated. Christine Mccarthy: Landlords are getting too greedy for rent. This town should be amazing not becoming a ghost town! Thank goodness for the markets!
