When the night markets are back on a Friday night you know it’s the start of the festive season. School’s out for summer and Christmas holidays for grownups are on their way!

It’s been hard work in the hinterland this year with a sweltering spring, bushfire season lighting up, and slow retail for businesses. But compared to many Queenslanders we’re extremely lucky to live where we do in this lush pocket, close to the beach, close to the big smoke and its resources, but far enough away from both to live a rural life.

This is a lovely issue filled with festive content and reports from some of our community groups (some declined to contribute this year).

Thanks for reading, contributing and advertising in the Green’s 24 issues for 2019. It’s been a pleasure to share your stories. The Green will be back next year with a revamp! We’ll also have the wonderful Tracey Combes joining the Green team in 2020. I can’t wait to share the new look community mag with you next year.

Business CHAMBER REPORT Eumundi Chamber of Commerce (ECC) has had a great year with the launch of the new website and steady growth in membership over the year with members representing a diverse range of industry sectors throughout 4562.

Guest speakers representing associations or bodies such as Regional Development Australia, FAN and Sunshine Coast Council have been engaging with members at member breakfast functions with opportunities being born from these networking events.

A number of issues such as Council’s budget allocation to upgrade the main street, and member’s concerns regarding the frequency and number of car parking inspectors have also

been mooted with Cr Rogerson attending the last breakfast meeting of the year on 6 December to provide updates.

The Eumundi Business Awards was again a wonderful event with two winners taking out the Chamber’s top awards of best business being The Store Eumundi and the Australian Wearable Art Inc and Big Heart Bamboo taking out the emerging business award.

The management team have observed over the past year the amount of time and investment that large number of businesses put into their products and services which can only be commended for a township our size. From a regional perspective, the

team firmly believes there is so much vibrancy in tourism product within the township.

Within our local centre, we are seeing new music and artisan events emerging as well as tourists enjoying our destination shopping experiences.

Within the Eumundi region, there is also an amazing array of professionals, health and well being related practitioners, accommodation providers as well as experts in trades and

services that are enriching our township and providing the community with a rich network of opportunity for sustainability and growth.

Community ECCO CHAIR REPORT This past year has certainly been one of internal reflection by the Board and hard work by the ECCO team. The ECCO board needed to strategically move forward with their goals and aspirations. In addition, as of May this year, we had to say farewell to Richard Thurbon our much loved and appreciated car park and RV manager.

It became clear to us at the board level, that a one size fits all approach to management of ECCO business arms needed to be revisited given the various businesses being operated as well as the various skill sets required for each business.

Consequently, a number of roles and responsibilities were redefined, and additional responsibilities taken on by the Chair or the subcommittees of the board.

Management of the Car Park, RV facility and Terraces has been grouped into one management role and in August this year we were able to welcome the young but very enthusiastic

Experience Eumundi needed a specific skill set and we were fortunate enough in June this year to have engaged Bamik Baker as the new Experience Eumundi Marketing, Events and Communications Manage.

We also welcome Tracey Coombes to the Green team as the new Sales and Distribution representative for the magazine.

Parking numbers for 18/19 financial year amounted to approx. 97,600 which is 5% less on the previous year. This has meant that expected revenue from the car park was below budget by approximately $46,000. The number of cars parked has not fallen below 100,000 since 2012 and can be attributed to many factors that may include an increase in bad or severe weather events on market days, as well as economic downturn and increased competition within and outside our local region. It is imperative that ECCO does everything in its power to deliver to our market visitors an exceptional market

experience and more is done to mitigate against foreseeable risks. I also hope to see more collaboration between market managers, business owners and ECCO into the future for the purposes of maximising the exposure of what this amazing town has to offer.

The RV Stopover has showed consistent visitor numbers with expected seasonal changes and we achieved a $6,800 profit this year, which was over budget.

The Green has ended the financial year at more of a loss than anticipated in the budget. Given these increasing losses, the Board has spent considerable time this year debating the future viability of the Green whilst recognising its inherent value to our community and the connections it brings to our township for the benefit of all.

I have to say that part of my voluntary role over the last year has been as publisher of the Green, which has given me great insight into how the

Green team operates and also has allowed me to see first hand what amazing and passionate employees we have. To Sacha, Lil and Kerry the Board thanks you all very much for your hard work and commitment as well as your enthusiasm for change and continual drive to make improvements.

It is also important to acknowledge an outgoing director who has served on the ECCO board for many many years and has also been a valuable Chair. Terry Lawrence has retired from the board and I note that in my years, serving on the board I can say that Terry has been a wonderful asset to the company not only at the board level but also in his capacity as a car park volunteer throughout this time.

Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled (SCRDA) has had another very successful year with programs finishing on 3 December and coaches awarding sashes/certificates to our deserving 2019 riders.

This year saw a total of 191 participants take part in our seven different programs over five days a week. These programs were supported by 124 wonderful volunteers throughout the year. Four new coaches were also accredited.

Our 22 horses are in magnificent condition thanks to our very hard-working horse manager and her team of helpers.

Throughout the year we have been so thankful for the regular donation of feed and hay from some wonderful sponsors. Our volunteers are the backbone of the Centre and are celebrated and thanked immensely, for without them the Centre could not offer these services to those on the Sunshine Coast with a disability.

The Centre has continued to

grow in 2019 with the addition of a new front awning allowing wheelchairs to unload and load during wet weather, more rainwater tanks and a new wastewater treatment plant.

The community has been able to access the Centre when we are not using it, by hiring the two arenas. The indoor arena was especially popular during periods of wet weather. The Centre is extremely grateful for the continued support from community groups, individuals and businesses across the Sunshine Coast allowing us to grow and thrive. The Eumundi community in particular has been at the forefront of this support with Eumundi Rotary, Eumundi Showgrounds, Eumundi Green and Joe’s Waterhole prominent. The Centre hosted some fundraising events throughout 2019 - The “Scone-off High Tea”, two Car Boot Sales and the Annual Open Day where famed horseman Guy McLean gave two performances and Special 6

Olympics gold medalist Nathan Harvey performed. It was our best ever Open Day! New Volunteers are always welcome! New Volunteer Training will be on Tues 4 February till Friday 7 February 2020 from 9am - 12 pm. Anyone who has some regular time to

offer, who would like to help others and join a dynamic team of volunteers is encouraged to come along!

Community THUNDERSTORM FINALE FOR CAROLS The 4th Annual Doonan Community Christmas Carols promised so much and delivered – for about an hour! After a balmy summer’s day, mother nature provided the Carols with a thunderstorm finale.

Despite the unplanned evening interruption, organiser and Kitty Kat performer Renae Suttie was happy with the event. “Although we had to cut the event short, our spirits weren’t dampened as we celebrated Christmas with a wonderful host of local performers,” she said.

Although some performers missed their chance to get up onto the stage, Renae was extremely grateful to all the talented locals behind the Carols night. “Thank you to everyone who joined us dancing in the rain, and also

for your kind donations, which helped to raise over $1200 for the Doonan Rural Fire Brigade,” she shared.

Luckily the special guest wasn’t perturbed by thunder, lightening and rain. Santa’s arrival on the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade convoy was a highlight for those

NIGHT MARKETS RETURNS Nothing signals the start of Christmas like the return of the Eumundi Night Markets. A beautiful balmy night; lots of locals catching up, children’s entertainment; live music; fav food stalls and artisan markets were all the ingredients to a great first event.

Santa arrived on his favourite mode of transport in Eumundi – fire truck - and threw candy canes at the mosh pit of kids. As the sun set, the three Christmas trees along Memorial Dr, lit up, as did Dick Caplick Park with sparkling coloured lights. The children’s silk trapeze performed mesmerizing spins in the park.

Patrons at the Imperial Hotel, Joe’s Waterhole and local restaurants spilled onto the main street.

The next night market will be held on Friday 13 December when there’ll also be a Christmas Extravaganza held at the Market Terraces. It will also signal the official start of the school holidays.

EUMUNDI POLICE UPDATE Sgt Ryan Hanlon, Eumundi Police 5475 2323 Firstly, on behalf of the police, we would like to wish everyone in the Eumundi township and surrounding Hinterland a safe and merry Christmas. Please all travel safe wherever your holiday journeys take you over this time.

We have had three more burglary type offences during the month of November.

Houses were locked and secured at the time. Offenders at one of the properties, stole car keys and attempted to steal a vehicle. Like most car thieves, their breaking and entering skills outweighed their IQ and upon starting the car realised they couldn’t get it out of the back yard and ran off.

But seriously, be aware that

offenders are looking for car keys to steal.

During the month of November we have had five drink drivers and five drug drivers caught.

Please don’t drive when you know you are over the limit.

Take courtesy buses, taxis etc.

Three drug search warrants were executed for a range of drug offences. Thanks to the community members for assisting police via information to Policelink. Road policing units/state traffic units issued a total of 76 tickets throughout November in Eumundi police division including one 21yr old female caught doing 151km/h.

POUCHES FOR BURNT WILDLIFE Some locals recently gathered to sew and knit mittens and pouches for burnt and injured animals during the recent devastating bushfires at the newly opened art workshop space, the PlayShed. Organiser Sandy Bradley said she was moved by the callout from the Rescue Collective and Animal Rescue Craft Guild’s for pouches for baby sugar gliders, baby brush-tail and baby ringtail possums, joeys and koalas. “It has been so very heart-breaking to see these poor animals in such distress, to know so many have been burnt, injured [and] orphaned,” Sandy shared.

Community S U N N Y B R A E D I S P L AY O P E N S A permanent historic photographic exhibition tracing the history of Sunny Brae was unveiled recently. One of Eumundi’s heritage gems, Sunny Brae was formerly the region’s hospital and is now the location of the showgrounds. Hosted by the Eumundi Parks, Recreation and Showgrounds Association, around 50 people attended including 12 who were born at Sunny Brae. At now 93, Sir Leo Hielscher is perhaps the most famous Sunny Brae baby. He opened the exhibition and recollected on his memorable childhood in Eumundi.

S U N N Y B R A E H O S P I TA L R E C O L L E C T I O N S Sir Leo Hielscher Ac I was first here, 93 years and two months ago. Then, when I was about three, I returned with an infliction. My sister, Veda, was born here in 1932. In 1936 my Dad had a very serious double pneumonia and pleurisy. This, of course, was before penicillin and we nearly lost him. In my recollection, Sunny Brae hasn’t changed very much since those days. In the early days there was a dray, a sulky, saddle and other farm equipment stored [under the house]. Nurse Luke, who assisted me into this world, was the Matron, the Sister, the Nurse and the Midwife. The doctor involved in this great occasion was Dr Bearblock, whose surgery was opposite the butter factory.

For the first 13 years of my life Eumundi was my hometown. The Hielscher family of Mum, Dad and four kids, owned the last house up Cook St and it is still there. Each of the house blocks in Cook St now has another house in what was then the backyard, where the house cows were held overnight.

West to the old railway line was what we called ‘the Flat’ - a great playground for the kids, where the travelling circuses pitched their tents and where the school had its picnics. Eumundi then was the rail head for the butter factory, the two sawmills, the fruit industry, the cattle and pig industry. It [also] had a dentist, two banks, a baker, three garages, a boot maker, police station, and of course two hotels. It was a township of some substance. Even though we had all this activity in the town, we were all quite poor in cash and the comforts of life. We were troubled by a very damaging depression.

There is no doubt we had a wonderful childhood. Every house in Cook St had three or more kids and many of these friendships extended well into our adulthood. Next door to us was the Burrell family with four kids; Norma, Rodney, Alan and Ollie. Norma was born in Sunny Brae 24 hours before me. Norma, if I remember correctly, was a bit of a bully - for every game she would take over and say “Eldest first!”

Community A Y E A R O F R E V I VA L F O R E U M U N D I Q C WA B R A N C H Janet Millington, Eumundi CWA This year members have focused on: creating a welcoming space; offering a wider range of activities; and building stronger community connections. We used our funds to support: our Eumundi State School; families facing extraordinary challenges; donating funds to the Drought Appeal; the subsequent Flood Appeal; and more recently the Appeal for Water.

Our QCWA State Office has been charged with distributing not only the money raised by members of our association who have been tireless in their efforts, but government funds as well.

QCWA is a trusted organisation known to have its roots in regional and rural communities.

The administration of a fair and compassionate system of distribution has been shouldered by some amazing women; but our association is made of women who are made of true grit and who care about their own and other communities.

Our reinvigoration has drawn several new members who bring diverse skills, knowledge and connections to our activities.

Busy Chicks evenings are gaining momentum. Last meeting, we had the opportunity to thank our local firies (Eumundi and Verrierdale) for their hard work at the Peregian, Tewantin, North Shore fires and those fires that they stopped before they grew.

The blackened trees on Noosa Eumundi Rd near Seib Rd are a reminder of the constant danger and how a quick response can prevent disaster. We celebrated with what we are well known for – tea and cake.

Attendance at our craft mornings is increasing and we welcomed local and interstate ladies this year. There is no need to be a member to join us on craft mornings on the first and third Tuesdays of the month.

Our hall is used for a variety of activities at a very reasonable cost and by local groups as one of our community services. We thank all those who use our hall and who look after it as a shared resource.

Note from the Mayor This year we have achieved some major milestones with our region shaping projects, but I’m especially proud of the work that council has been able to do with a wide cross section of community representatives to develop our proposed new Community Strategy.

Our region has a history that intrinsically connects with its natural landscape and waterways and the way in which our communities have developed over time reflects these connections. Our proposed new Community Strategy 2019-2041 is a product of the engagement we have had with members of our community and seeks to reflect their aspirations for our Sunshine Coast – both today and in 20 years’ time.

The collective vision of Together we Thrive is a strong common thread across all of the feedback and messages we have received in developing this strategy. The proposed strategy will be considered by council before the end of the year. What makes our community special is our ability to support and reach out, not just to our friends and family, but to our neighbours, acquaintances and community groups. We open our homes to others in times of natural disasters, we turn out in great numbers to show our commitment and we make time to share with those most in need. Working together makes for a stronger community and that is what the proposed strategy seeks to achieve. It is very much a part of realising our goal to be Australia’s most sustainable region – healthy, smart, creative. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and safe New Year. Take the time with loved ones during this special time of year.

Seib Road bridge Design and planning is underway for the Eumundi-Noosa Road footbridge over the North Maroochy River near Seib Road. The design of the 24 metre long and 3 metre wide Trail Bridge is well advanced with the State Government pledging 50 per cent of funding. Environmental investigations and necessary requests for approval have begun. Once the bridge is finished, it will provide walkers and horse riders with a safer, more accessible crossing.

Sweet success for our farmers Supporting our local farmers, especially the sugar cane industry, has never been more important, especially when harvest windows have been slashed.

The sugar cane shipped from the Sunshine Coast to the Maryborough Sugar Factory makes up to 11 per cent of the total sugar cane processed – making it a vital industry that is ingrained in our heritage. However, concerns have been raised that B-double trucks have been restricted in accessing farms within certain times making it harder for farmers to continue their great work. So together with the member for Ninderry, Dan Purdie and Councillor Steve Robinson, I have been relentless in endeavouring to get the Department of Transport and Main Roads to look outside their stifling bureaucratic guidelines and policies to implement a ‘common sense’

A Queensland first Yandina has become the third place in Australia and the rst in Queensland, to have an ‘Analemmatic Sundial’.

Yandina has become one of the few places in Australia and the first in Queensland, to have a sundial of human involvement - an ‘Analemmatic Sundial’. In the grounds of Tea Tree Park on Pioneer Road is one of the towns best kept secrets. I would like to acknowledge the man behind the interactive sundial, Phillip Richards, who drove the project to fruition after working together with his Yandina community. The sundial is not only a great draw card to pull off the highway for, this large 8 metre structure is also a unique and enriching way to engage with Yandina’s heritage.

FROM YOUR COUNCILLOR Well folks, the fast approaching March 2020 Local Government Elections will see me exit the role as your representative for Division 10.

I’m not embarrassed to declare that I will genuinely miss the role and responsibilities that went with the elected position, but more importantly, I will greatly miss the interactions I had with a wonderful community on a daily basis.

The heart of Eumundi Eumundi – the creative jewel in the Coast’s crown offering one of the most diverse markets in the Southern Hemisphere — is more than what meets the eye.

Beneath its creative vibe there’s a community that supports, encourages and importantly welcomes multiculturalism. I have been on the front foot in helping Eumundi’s, and indeed the entire Sunshine Coast’s, Thai community form an association which has been instrumental in giving back within its community.

Many of the cultural group attendees have lived in Eumundi for more than 10 years and now, through this new association, have taken the time to raise funds to give back to their community, by installing a bench seat in the park for all to sit and take in the natural beauty Eumundi has to offer.

Celebrate people and nature with a UNESCO Biosphere Our home—the whole local government area—is a highly desirable place to live, work and play. It deserves to be internationally recognised and celebrated, which is why council is working with the community to nominate our region as a UNESCO Biosphere.

Becoming a biosphere will help to ensure we maintain a healthy environment and liveable Sunshine Coast for generations to come. It will also allow for our region to be considered as a niche market, leveraging the agricultural, forestry, fisheries and tourism sectors. The next step is for the nomination to be assessed by the state and federal governments before being sent to UNESCO. An outcome will be announced in June 2021.

In my final newsletter, I highlight some of the great projects that I have enjoyed being a part of and helped bring to fruition, to better our community.

Thank you for demonstrating the faith you saw in me, when I started my political career way back in 2004.

On a happier note, Christmas is nearly here, so may I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe, prosperous and most importantly an extremely healthy 2020!

Arts T I N B E E R WA H A R T G R O U P R E P O R T Jan Cooke, Noosaville In 2019 the Tinbeerwah Art Group (TAG) celebrated 25 years of creativity. TAG was founded by retired art teacher Gwen Blair in 1994. Gwen wanted to join an art group but she couldn’t find one, so she started her own. The rest is history! The Tinbeerwah Art Group has been meeting at Tinbeerwah Hall ever since. Sadly, Gwen Blair passed away in 2013 but her legacy lives on. TAG has grown from a few friends meeting on a Thursday morning to a membership of over 50 local artists who paint in two groups on Thursday and Friday mornings.

Each year TAG holds an annual art show in support of a local charity. This year the group celebrated their Silver (25th) Anniversary by showcasing their work in a spectacular art show at Tinbeerwah Hall. This year we donated funds raised from gold coin door entry, raffle and artists donations to Katie Rose Cottage Hospice in Doonan. The 25th Anniversary Art Show was our biggest and best ever. We are indebted to this year’s guest tutors; Fiona Groome, Michele Knightley, Dale Leach and Pam Taylor, who have encouraged members to try new techniques and develop their skills in different mediums.

In 2020 we will welcome seven wonderful award winning tutors:.

Kids ESS ENDS THE YEAR WITH CONCERT Every two to three years Eumundi State School’s (ESS) year three to six students put on an end-of-year concert – and this was the year! The school’s 670 students, along with the school’s Glee club, danced to popular songs from the eighties in the Gone But Not Forgotten Concert. ESS Principal Mick Connors praised the teachers and students who spent many hours practicing their class dances. “It was a wonderful night and a fantastic way to end the school year,” he enthused.

The vibrant hour-long show was based on Dr Seuss’s The Grinch. Wendy Beaulieu, Junior Years Student Co-ordinator said the students embraced their roles. “The students spent many hours practising, however, the most important part of the show was the message and I really think the students understood how it is about the love, kindness and the joy we give and receive that brings meaning to the season,” she shared.

Health THE SILENT EPIDEMIC As many of us put up our Christmas decorations and start to plan our celebrations, it is important to recognise that for many people in our community, Christmas can make them feel increasingly isolated and lonely.

One in five older Australians feel lonely, particularly those aged over 75. Those who live in aged care facilities or live alone, or have health issues that limit their mobility are more likely to experience loneliness. Feeling lonely can also have long-term health consequences.

When you’re experiencing loneliness, your levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, go up.

Cortisol can impair cognitive performance, compromise the immune system, and increase your risk for vascular problems, inflammation and heart disease.

Loneliness is also a risk factor for more serious mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. Lonely older people are more likely to experience depression, physical and cognitive decline, and a range of illnesses that require long-term care. For example,

loneliness increases the risk of dementia by 40% for the older population, regardless of gender, education, ethnicity and even genetic risk.

Loneliness can become a difficult rut to get out of. There’s a risk of rejection and it may mean pushing yourself out of your comfort zone. Warm sticky figgy pudding

The recipe was recommended by one of the Busy Chicks at our CWA Christmas break up meeting. We shared successful family festive season recipes to add to our personal recipe collections. A few of the recipes have been used for two or three generations and others quite modern. This one is American, quick to make and with fewer ingredients than most puddings. When I trialled the recipe for the Green, I served it with the sauce and ice cream. The family really enjoyed it, so I also served the mixture as muffins.

The sauce or a fig icing would have made them even more delicious for any occasion.

Ingredients

• Butter for coating ramekins

• 1 ½ cup chopped dried pitted dates

• Cream and sugar for the syrup

• ½ cup chopped dried figs

• Ice cream or heavily beaten cream

• 2 cup water • 1 tsp bi carb soda • 100g or 7 tblsp of softened butter • 1 cup caster sugar • 2 eggs • 2 ½ cup self raising flour • 75g dark chocolate grated

• Fresh figs for garnish Method Preheat oven to 350F or 180C (160C for fan forced ovens).

Add the dates, dried figs and water to a medium saucepan and bring to the boil over medium heat. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in bi carb soda. Let cool for 5 mins and

then pour into a blender to puree.

Using a mixer, cream the butter and sugar in a large bowl.

Add the eggs and beat well.

Fold in the flour, the puree date mixture and the grated chocolate.

Put the mixture into 1 cup individual ramekins, filling only halfway or less. Place in oven for 20-25 minutes.

Prepare the sauce by stirring the sugar and cream in a medium saucepan over a low heat. Simmer until the sugar

dissolves. Raise the heat and simmer for another 5 minutes.

Then add the butter and stir until incorporated.

Remove the ramekins from the oven and let stand for 10 mins. May be served in the ramekin or turned out onto a small plate. With a paring knife cut a cross in the middle of the top of each pudding to accept the sauce. Pour the sauce into the cross then pour more over the pudding and allow to soak in slightly. Top with ice cream or cream and fresh figs. Serve warm.

This is something easy and fun to make with kids as gifts or for the Christmas table. Amounts are just a guide and not important to be accurate.

Ingredients • 500g miniature pretzels • 500g cornflakes • 400g salted, dry roasted nuts • 320g M&Ms or Smarties • 200g tiny marshmallows • 650g white chocolate

Method Lay a large piece of baking paper on the bench and tape it down. Or use a large, shallow tray.

Put white chocolate into a double boiler.

Mix remaining ingredients in a large bowl until combined evenly.

Melt chocolate stirring frequently. Scrape sides so as not to scorch the chocolate.

Pour chocolate into the bowl.

Gently combine to cover dry ingredients.

Quickly turn out of bowl onto paper or tray.

Let cool then break into pieces.

Store in airtight jars.

Living M AT C H I N G B E E R T H I S S U M M E R With summer now set in and the festive season rapidly approaching, it is a perfectly good reason to talk beer - in particular beer with food.

As one of your friendly neighbourhood brewers it happens to be one of my favourite subjects! For those that are new to partnered beer and food, here are some tips that might help at your festive lunch or a summer barbeque.

For thousands of years beer has been included in festivities of all sorts and very much enjoyed with food. Beer in most cases has a light to moderate flavour threshold, meaning it partners well alongside a huge variety of foods. It doesn’t overpower and often helps showcase unique flavours and tastes. With beer coming in more types, styles, shapes or colours than any other beverage, the options are almost endless. Let’s not forget that beer is typically 99.9% sugar free, 100% fat free and at 4.5% alcohol it is 95.5% water! When consumed in moderation it is a

great option.

As a rule of thumb pairing beer with food, we talk about the three C’s: complement, contrast and cleanse. This handy rule applies to a lot of food matching and works really well with beer.

Complement Think about matching intensities with each other. Light foods with lighter beers. White meat, light seafood, or light salads go for lighter beers such as summer ales or lagers.

Outdoors BELLI FIRE BRIGADE REPORT

Belli Park Rural Fire Brigade’s bushfire season began in August this year with a couple of small grass fires on rural properties.

We must give a big thankyou to the Belli Park community who have been very vigilant in their fire control and property maintenance, with the only other call outs to the camp area on Eumundi-Kenilworth Rd, where some visitors were not aware of the current fire bans.

Like most of the other brigades on the Sunshine Coast, we have had crews at the two Peregian fires, multiple attendances at the Corroibah fires, multiple attendances at Noosa North Shore fires, Conondale, Glen Innes in NSW and the Widgee fires. It has been a busy time indeed with the whole brigade contributing at some stage or another, which makes me very thankful and proud of our crew at Belli.

The Belli crew have also been very active in providing assistance to our group training nights during 2019 and although,

current group training is suspended due to fire activity, training will resume in early 2020.

This is where the community can play a role, if you are thinking of joining then now is the right time so you can be fully trained during our wet season. That way, when the next fire season occurs, you will be a confident, safe, active member of the crew.

Our first training night in 2020 is on 6 January, 6.30pm. The rest of the year we will continue to be on stand-by and we are all looking forward to our Christmas party at Peggy Sues!

In the lead up and during the Christmas break, animal shelters receive a huge influx of surrendered and rescued animals. Most animals can’t be left alone for long so either taking them to a holiday care facility (pet hotel) or taking them with you is your best option. This is easier enough with pets like cats and dogs but what about your chickens?

When you committed to having chickens, you may not have considered what to do with them when you go away? Many think chickens can be left to fend for themselves, but for domesticated poultry this is not the case. If you are leaving your chooks alone for more than one night you need to consider their daily needs:

• Daily egg collection • Filling feed bowls You may choose to take the risk of not locking them up for a night or two but the risk of running out of water, or the water being tipped over or stepped in, can be lifethreatening for your chickens.

Here are some ideas to ensure their wellbeing is considered while you are away.

• Book your chickens into holiday care that cares for chickens • Book a pet sitter to visit your property morning and night (dog walkers will sometimes do this)

• Locking up in a shelter on dark and letting out to roam on daylight

• Ask a neighbour to visit morning and night and offer them the eggs

• Kept safe from predators

Sunny Brae recollections cont’d from pg 10 Despite all of these lovely memories, we were all living a third world subsistence. Our home was four roomed (not four bedroomed) with two of the kids sleeping behind a canvas blind on the front verandah. We had three house cows that were let out each day into the long paddock. They provided milk, cream, butter and fertiliser for the vegetable garden, where we grew potatoes, pumpkins, cabbages, lettuce, carrots, strawberries and shallots. The fruit trees provided our bananas, paw paws, peaches, persimmons, mulberries, and monsterioes. We had our own chooks. Our grocery bill was mainly for kerosene, flour for bread baking, a bag of sugar and so forth. There was no electricity, no reticulated water, no sewerage - instead we had kerosene lights and lanterns, a woodstove, woodfired copper for the laundry, 2 x 1000 gallon tanks capturing the rain water and the dunny man came once a week. There were no bitumen roads they were merely tracks. The roads were passable only if the weather was friendly. I’ve seen bullock wagons stuck up to their axles in the red clay on the hill in front of the school.

Dad was the town blacksmith and during the depression his workdays were reduced to three. To provide for his family, he created two banana farms at Doonan to supplement wages. That meant however we missed out on our weekly Sunday visit to Munna, as all hands were needed on the banana farms. I can still recall seeing young men, out of work, with their swags on their backs, walking the railway tracks and the roads from town to town to qualify for food rations authorised by the local police, sleeping rough under railway bridges or wherever.

There was also an overriding threat and worry in the expected Japanese invasion, which almost happened in the early forties.

Later in my career, I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time and able to do something about the negative parts of my childhood.

$1,235 was spent for soft fall on our playground for our free of change playgroup that is once a week. We have made our donations this year to The Cancer Council $750, Verrierdale Rural Fire Brigade $500 and Mary Valley First Aid Volunteers $400.

We would like to continue opening our hall to new events and fresh ideas. Keep an eye out for the next Car Boot Sale, Full Moon Dance, Australia Day lunch and Anzac Day Service followed by our well known breakfast. Hang these 10cm off the ground (lower for bantam chooks).

However, as they can clog and still run out on hot days several should be placed in different locations • Install an automated door system to the chicken coop.

This will open and close at set times. Note: this must be tested for many nights prior to leaving for holiday and it may not be 100% reliable.

It is still recommended someone checks on your chickens each morning to ensure they have managed to get outside

It’s the last Eumundi Green for the year so let’s look back at 2019 and recap the year that was. The year divided itself neatly into two 6-month blocks. The first half of the year was marked by uncertainty in our local property market which was influenced by the Banking Royal Commission and the calling of the Federal Election.

The second half of the year saw our market improve off the back of the unexpected Election result and the Sunshine Coast being widely acclaimed for the values of ‘knowledge’, ‘lifestyle’ and ‘retirement’. These positive market conditions dovetailed with a dramatic increase in the number of southern based buyers who decided to embrace ‘sunbelt migration’ and head north to the Noosa region. Another positive for our region is that we have a strong local Council that embraces a sustainable lifestyle and preserves the character of individual towns and localities.

We’ve experienced a resurgent property market and predict that 2020 will be a year of positive growth in property prices – with the strengthening of the Melbourne and Sydney property markets, demand levels will increase for what is currently a limited supply.

A 2019 Hinternoosa highlight was our 30th birthday, where all who gathered to celebrate this milestone with us took a trip down memory lane. Ingredients 250 gram plain biscuits 395 gram can sweetened condensed milk 1 cup (80g) desiccated coconut 1/4 cup (25g) dutch-processed cocoa powder 1/4 cup (60ml) dark rum 1/2 cup (40g) desiccated coconut, toasted, extra Method 1. Process biscuits until fine crumbs.

2. Transfer crumbs to a large bowl; add condensed milk, coconut, sifted cocoa and rum. Stir well to combine.

3. Roll mixture into balls. Toss balls in extra coconut or coat in melted chocolate.

4. Place on a tray; cover, refrigerate until firm then enjoy!
