Poor November is always wished away as we push through the month with our eye on the summer holidays and Christmas – yep – Christmas is coming. I for one though want November to last. I’d like to catch my breath. Look up from the blur that has been 2019. There are projects to finish, school to go to, Green’s to publish (three left after this one) and sundowners to drink before we get festive - surely.

BREW FOR SMART PUPS Eumundi’s brewers presented a cheque for more than $10,000 to charity Smart Pups Assistance Dogs last week at the Imperial Hotel Eumundi. Head Brewer Chris Sheehan said they created a coffee lager for the charity beer (Karma Keg) to give back to the community.

“The community has supported us so well, it is only fair that we give back to a local charity that in turn gives to those in need,” he explained.

Smart Pups Assistance Dogs is a Sunshine Coast based charity dedicated to providing assistance dogs to children with special needs. Janelle Denny from Smart Pups shared, “This donation will enable us to purchase four specially bred Labrador and Golden Retriever puppies for our assistance dog training program.”

“These puppies will go on to become an integral part of the life of a child with a diagnosed special need such as autism, seizure, mobility and diabetes related syndromes,” she said.

Last Thursday night Eumundi businesses celebrated another year of trading in the village at the 12th annual Eumundi Business Awards.

Hosted and sponsored by Eumundi Square, the awards showcased and rewarded the endeavours of small business operators at; Parkside Markets, The Eumundi District Community Association (EDCA) Markets and Eumundi Square. Eumundi Chamber of Commerce also acknowledged 12 standout businesses.

In his speech Eumundi Square owner and operator Louis Formosa thanked everyone for being at the gala ceremony, after what had been a hard year. Event organiser Jenny Formosa shared the event was a chance for local business owners to come together and celebrate before the busy Christmas season. “The evening is a lot of fun, but also a chance to support some of the standout Eumundi Businesses over the past year,” she shared. iloveeumundimarkets.com

VINNIES OPENS IN EUMUNDI Eumundi is known for its eclectic style and love of re-using and recycling. So the opening of a Vinnies – Eumundi’s first Op Shop – is a welcome addition to the village. Retail manager Lisa Baker shared that she’d been made very welcome by the community and had had a very busy first couple of weeks. “[People have been] amazed by what a fantastic job we did with such a small space and [I’ve had a great] response to how the store looks and how great the stock is,” she said.

Community CR GREG ROGE RSON Division 10

In my previous column I outlined a number of serious concerns that I have regarding proposed changes to the boundaries of Division 10 as proposed by the Local Government Change Commission, which could take effect from March 2020. Under these proposed changes, Eumundi would be one of many Hinterland towns and communities no longer included in Division 10. The ‘”new look”’ Division 10 would essentially comprise of Nambour, Bli Bli, Woombye and the far western outskirts of Marcoola and Pacific Paradise.

Having served the great town of Eumundi and around 30 other Hinterland communities for the last 8 years, I’ve developed a very strong sense for what is important to these areas and the people within them. I would therefore find it extremely tough to make such an abrupt change of focus to new areas of the Sunshine Coast and I’m sure the residents of Eumundi and other affected communities would feel a great deal of

confusion and uncertainty at next year’s local elections.

I’m very pleased to report that council shares the strong concerns I have on this matter and has included them in a very detailed list of concerns and recommendations which was sent to the Local Government Change Commission. Council’s recommendation to the commission is that the historical settlement connections and current and ongoing community and business connections between Yandina, Eumundi and Nambour are respected and that these towns should be retained in Division 10. Here’s hoping the Change Commission considers our very real concerns and makes the right decision for the futures of these great towns and communities.

Parking the matter ...

One of the top priorities of my two terms as Divisional Councillor for the great town of Eumundi has been to ensure that local residents, tourists, business owners of the town,

and market stall holders, are looked after and given a fair go when it comes to car parking on market days and indeed every day of the week.

Recently, there’s been some angst from business owners who have copped a fine on a non-market day for parking well beyond the allowed duration in timed parking bays outside their business premises. While I sympathise with those who have received a rude shock by way of a fine, I would also remind them that these parking regulations are in place to help their businesses by encouraging regular turnover of cars within these parking spots, therefore enabling potential customers to easily find a park.

I have taken on board the genuine complaints aired to me and I have sought consideration by Council’s Parking Infringement Team on the possible waiving of these fines, under the circumstances raised.

I’ll be meeting with local

business owners to address and discuss their concerns, including Council’s timed parking criteria, in the very near future and hopefully by then I have received word back on the fines!

Road Reseal works If you’re a regular commuter along North Arm-Yandina Creek Rd, please be aware that Council will be carrying out some very important resurfacing works from 30 October to 6 November.

Restricted on-street parking will be in place between the hours of 7am and 5pm and traffic movement through the area will be restricted while these works are in progress. So please keep an eye out and take extra care if you live along this road or traverse it daily.

4 5 6 2 B O U N D A RY CHANGE The Electoral Commission Queensland is currently reviewing the internal boundaries (divisions) of the Sunshine Coast Regional Council.

The purpose of this review is to ensure each division of the Council has a similar number of voters (quota), so that each person’s vote has the same value.

The Change Commission is proposing that Eumundi, Eerwah Vale, North Arm – which are currently part of Division 10, join Division 9 – which currently includes Doonan, Verrierdale and Weyba Downs. This would mean all of 4562 would be in the same division. The Division 10 Councillor is currently Greg Rogerson and Division 10 Councillor is currently Steve Robinson.

If the 4562 region is combined in division 9 it will join other regions: Bli Bli, Coolum Beach, Maroochy River, Peregian Beach, Peregian Springs, Point Arkwright, Valdora,

Yandina Creek, Yaroomba.

Local government general elections are held every four years, and on the same date for all 77 councils across 8

Queensland. The next local election will be held in 2020. Cr Rogerson has confirmed he will not be running again in the next council election. Cr Robinson is

Community BLUE LEASE ON LIFE Trees don’t grow blue. But if you’ve driven along the Eumundi Kenilworth Rd since Sunday 13 October, you’ll have seen two standing proud in the paddock of Darrin and Jeanette Grevett’s Dairyfarm in Eerwah Vale. A group of around 100 locals, along with Eumundi Rotary, got together to paint the dead trees a vibrant, sky blue in an effort to remind our community about the importance of mental health. Suicide is the leading cause of death in Australians aged 15 to 44.

(because he found a tin of blue paint in the shed). Sadly, in 2018, Jayden took his life after being released from hospital twice in the one day. He was overlooked in an overwhelmed mental health system. His family later discovered the blue tree and were inspired to adopt the painted tree as a symbol for a project that would raise awareness around mental wellbeing and to help generate change for other young people in farming communities.

One of the organisers, Libby Rough, explained the event came about when her friend David Lahey asked her to find the perfect tree. “As you can imagine, I thought ‘Why?’ So I googled Blue Trees and this is when I found out about the Blue Tree Project.”

READING TO AN UNEXPECTED A U D I E N C E Max Weening, Year 5, ESS Ignite English

Every year Eumundi & District Historical Assoc (EHA) hold a Remembrance Day service at the McIntyre WW1 Memorial Tree, opposite the Eumundi Post Office, from 10.30am for 10.45am start to the service, with the Minute’s Silence at 11am.

All are welcome to attend this short community service and can bring flowers to lay at the Memorial Tree.

There will be a free morning tea at the Eumundi School of Arts hall (opposite the Memorial Tree) to follow. Lest We Forget.

This is exactly what Kim from Story Dogs does at Eumundi State School. Each Thursday Kim and Charli, her golden retriever, can be found in the library, listening intently to a child read Jack and The Beanstalk or another fun book.

Once working in information technology in Brisbane, Kim had always wanted to share the joy of reading with children.

After stopping her information technology job, Kim moved to Sunshine Beach. Wanting to escape the crowds of Sunshine Beach, she then moved to Eumundi. Ever since Charli was a puppy, Kim had thought it would be fun to have a job they could do together, now she does.

Story Dogs is a unique program that improves reading and communication in a fun way, this is done by a companion dog and his/her handler. Story Dogs believes no child should be left behind in literacy and reading. Kim stated, ”we build confidence in literacy in a relaxed environment without pressure and judgement.”Charli helps the child read without the pressure of reading in front of others. She is like the student’s buddy, not judgmental on how the child sounds while they are reading.

Kim is the coordinator for Story Dogs in the local area organising schools including Eumundi, North Arm, Yandina, Nambour and Burnside. With Charli, Kim is the volunteer dog team of Eumundi State School. Kim loves every minute of Thursday in Eumundi

State School when she is helping children with their literacy. ”It makes me feel like I’m contributing to the community,” Kim said.

It is thanks to Kim that Eumundi State School has this wonderful program encouraging and helping students reach their reading goals.

The name The Vaudeville Smash was taken from an Italian children’s karaoke machine that was around in the late 80’s.

These guys are massive fans of the the 70’s/80’s Funk, Soul and Motown scene - Stevie Wonder and Earth Wind & Fire. Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson and Elton John, which is passionately reflected in their music.

When thinking of Funk music, the flute wouldn’t usually be the first instrument that would come to mind. But frontman Marc Lucchesi proves otherwise with his wild solos to get it started.

Training for the newly formed Eumundi Dragons senior reserve grade rugby union team will be on Thursday 31 October at the town’s showgrounds. At a public meeting held at the Imperial Hotel a couple of weeks ago, approximately 10 players have signed up to play for the club in 2020. At this stage another 1015 players are needed so anyone who is interested in giving the game a go should turn up at Thursday training (4.30pm) and register. Could be fun!

Coach, Dan Cooper, has promised that all new players will be made welcome. Fitness and game skills will be worked on with the emphasis on having fun, making new friends and playing the game for what it is - a game!

As a bit of an incentive and to raise motivation levels it is likely that the newly formed team will nominate to play in a Rugby Sevens carnival at Nambour on the 23 November.

If this is to happen it will be the first time that a team from Eumundi has competed in a senior Sunshine Coast competition since 1919. At the end of the Great War all ten clubs in the competition at that time voted to change over to Rugby League where players were paid and insured in case of injury. Senior rugby did not return to the Coast till approximately sixty years later.

It is now time for the community of Eumundi to (once again) cheer on their local team in the Sunshine Coast competition which sees teams from Gympie in the north to Brisbane in the south playing weekly matches from February to August.

Raspberry bomb bliss balls with a hint of lime Nicole Moore, Noosa Pengari Steiner School kitchen, Doonan

I love these summery Bliss Balls as they are so light and tangy. They hit the spot when I feel like something sweet that’s not chocolate. And now that limes are back in season, nearly everything I cook has lime zest added, and these little beauties are no exception! Because of the high fruit content, they are best kept in the freezer to maintain their shape. They can be eaten straight from the freezer like an ice cream ball or left out for a couple of minutes to defrost.

Ingredients

Method

2 cups of almonds (or 1 cup of almonds, ½ cup of pepitas, ½ cup of sunflower seeds) - whatever you have in the cupboard

In your food processor, blitz the nuts and or seeds until very small.

Add coconut and blitz until the mix is consistent.

Add seeded, chopped and medjool dates, blitz again.

I do 40 g balls, rolled in desiccated coconut, which will give you around 20 balls.

2 cups frozen raspberries (or your berries of choice) 8 dates ½ cup desiccated coconut Zest from half a lime

Add raspberries and lime zest and blitz.

This is the part where you will need your trusty spatula to help scrape down the sides.

A group of horse lovers want people to hang out with a herd of horses at a fifty-acre equestrian property in Belli Park.

Equine lovers; Matty Sormani, Ali Clift, Jessica Doak, Lauren D’Arsie and Coralie Kedzlie, run equestrian therapy programs.

They believe that a horse and human relationship can be fundamentally useful in helping humans find happiness and

Banksia spinulosa – Hairpin Banksia The Hairpin Banksia is a common plant around the Eumundi district, growing in eucalypt woodlands and heathlands. It is a beautiful shrub, growing to around 2m in height and when in flower is a sight to behold.

The beautiful orangeyellow flowers can grow up to 18cm long and may have dark coloured styles, that’s the pokey outey bits that look like hairpins!

Our Jabuticaba trees are laden with flowers and hundreds of buzzing bees. They look like pom poms all over trunks of the trees. These trees are known as the Brazillian Grape. The fruit grows on the trunks of the trees. Very fascinating! The children stand for ages eating them straight from the trees and also picking them to make jam. Jeanette Grevett, Eerwah Vale.

Sugar gliders and honeyeater birds love these flowers, while the groovy seed pods are relished by cockatoos.

There are three different varieties of Banksia spinulosa: var. spinulosa, var. collina and var. cunninghamii, these are all quite similar but have some differences.

There are also some dwarf varieties: • Birthday Candles is a low growing, spreading form, up to 50cm high, with short, orange flowers with reddish styles.

• Coastal Cushion is a similar height and width but with yellow flowers with maroon styles.

BURNING TIMBER TOWER Blossom Wiersma, Year 4, ESS Ignite English The echoing of the deafening chainsaw and the crashing of the tall dead tree onto the bush floor was followed by footsteps on a mission to collect the fuel for our fire. It was Dad’s job to load the large sections of wood into the ute while I was responsible for gathering up all the tiny pieces. The smell of the oil from the chainsaw still lingered in the air along with the scent of freshly made sawdust. Ute loaded, Dad and I took the gathered wood to a cleared spot on our property to begin the construction of our timber tower.

Firstly I got the driest, thinnest pieces and formed a triangle.

As the tower grew the sticks we chose became bigger and bigger until we used up all of the wood we had gathered. We waited for the sun to sink below the distant horizon. As daylight left and the night sky arrived, we made sure our supply of marshmallows was ready as

well as what we needed to light our construction. My mum was carrying the gasoline and my sis was carrying the matches. With great care, Dad flung the gas on the fire and lit the match. We waited a few seconds then ... BAM, the fire ignited in dazzling golden flames.

The flames seemed to climb on top of themselves until it was as high as a mountain and as bright as the sun. I looked at the middle of the fire, it had so many different shades of red, yellow and orange. The flames crackled while the heat warmed my skin and made my cheeks glow.

I love sticky, slimy sweet marshmallows.

I returned the next day and saw the coals and black charred wood. As I came closer to look at them, I could still feel the heat. My Hinterland bonfire - with my family, sharing stories and eating marshmallows!

Gradually the intensity of the fire died down. I knew it was time. My fingers pulled open the package that held the sweet pink pillows. I took one, placed it on a perfectly straight stick and held it over the glowing coals. Yummy,
