Last Friday up here on the hills, when the sky turned grey from smoke and the wind whipped around the streets, there was a sense of impending danger. The dry heat felt more like Melbourne or Adelaide – not the Sunny Coast. The evacuations of suburbs, not used to fire threatening, began. Our Noosa neighbours fled to the safety of the hinterland to shelter with us. As people left our 4562 volunteer fire crews – headed into the fire zone. They had a very busy weekend, with little reprieve, keeping houses, people and pets safe. The constant threat of fire this summer seems to be the new reality for our region…

This is Stretch. He’s been through a rough trot and is looking for a new home. Last week Eumundi Rotary sponsored Doonan local Bron Innes, to drive to drought ravaged Moree to collect Stretch along with a couple of other abandoned dogs, then rehome them here on the Coast. She’s on the hunt for hinterlanders able to help by taking a dog. “At first I was finding homes amongst my friends, but they all have dogs now!” Bron explained.

I love making a mango chutney for presents when the kerosene mango trees are fruiting, but I’ve wanted to find a good festive tomato chutney for years. Business Awards Congratulations to all the businesses recognised at the recent Eumundi Business Awards. I recently dropped in to visit the joint winner of the Business of the Year Award, The Store Eumundi, and I was really impressed by the bold plans that Thomas, Hugh and the team have. The Australian Wearable Art Festival were also proud recipients in this category. Well done to all.

Christmas Countdown The Doonan Community Christmas Carols will officially kick off the countdown to Christmas when they light up the Eumundi Showgrounds on Sunday 1 December. I’m pleased to be sponsoring this family friendly event which promises to be a great night.

I’ve heard Santa will be arriving on the back of a Doonan Rural Fire engine, so I hope Santa leaves the reindeers at home.

I am also looking forward to the Eumundi Christmas

Extravaganza, on Friday 13 December, held in conjunction with the Night Markets.

Judging by the program, there’s sure to be something to keep everyone entertained.

Turning trash into $$$ Last month I caught up with Eumundi Rotary, who, after months and months of negotiations, have finally managed to secure an excellent spot for their new Container Exchange Pod. Located right in the heart of Eumundi, behind the Markets and across from the Square, locals can choose to donate their recycled bottles and cans to Rotary, or to recycle them for cash. The new Pod is proving popular, and I’ve heard there are also plans to start collecting bottle tops, which will be recycled into prosthetic limbs. A huge thanks to Eumundi Rotary, in particular Bronwyn Innes, for her tireless efforts in making the Pod a reality for the community.

MORE THAN A MECHANIC Harper Cameron, Year 5, ESS Ignite English Fishing, camping, ju-jitsu and spending time with family are some of Brady Jansen’s favourite things to do in his spare time, however, you might also recognise him as the local Eumundi mechanic.

Brady chose set up his business in Eumundi because of its, “beautiful outdoor lifestyle, family support and a because it’s a great place to bring up a family.”

Brady has always had an interest in cars which was sparked when he was younger and carrying out repairs and modifications to his bikes. This later lead on to cars, motorbikes and outboard motors.

workplace for his employees. In addition to this, Brady organises parts, invoices and liaises with customers.

He really enjoys his work and helping people. He also loves the challenges of diagnosing difficult faults, locating hard to find parts and being able to manage a small business in a great community like Eumundi.

The job also presents other challenges including; time management, keeping to a budget, and staying up to date with the advances of modern motor vehicles.

Memorable moments as a mechanic include being able

Brady has not just been a mechanic though. He was a member of the defence force for nine years serving in the navy as an Electronics Technician and he reached the rank of Leading Seaman. While on a defence force trip he went to India as part of an international fleet review on the war ship HMAS Darwin and played cricket against a local Indian development squad in front of 10,000 people. He also got the chance to fly to Agra and visit the Taj Mahal.

Brady almost didn’t become a mechanic though. “If I could have chosen another job I would have liked to be a fireman,” Brady shared.

He would have chosen this job because his uncle was a fireman and he had a huge influence on Brady. The excitement of the job and the job security were also factors that had him interested in this alternative career.

EUMUNDI POLICE UPDATE Sgt Ryan Hanlon, Eumundi Police 5475 2323 The last couple of months have been a busy period for Blair, Craig and myself at the Eumundi Station. The good news for Eumundi is that there will be a new officer appointed by the end of the year. So for the first time this year we will have four officers at Eumundi. Warwick should arrive from Thursday Island just before Christmas.

At any one time we have on average about 70 investigations on the go so the extra officer will be a great addition for the Eumundi community.

Firstly, cybercrimes are increasing again. Just a reminder that if you get random calls or emails, please delete or hang up straight away. If you are promised a refund from the Australian Taxation office via email or phone it is a scam. If you are promised an inheritance as you are the 16th person in line to a hidden country royal throne or a lotto payout where all you have to do is pay the

legal fees first, yes unfortunately it’s a scam. Please don’t pay any money. We cannot recoup any spent money relating to overseas fraud.

In the last two months we have had an increase in burglary offences. We need the communities help reporting suspicious people loitering around homes. Please also remember to lock homes.

Most of these thieves are opportunists and check to see if doors or cars are unlocked.

We had one car stolen in September and two in October.

Our burglary offences have occurred on Cash Rd Eumundi, Atmosphere Rd, Valdora, also Grays Rd and Meadows Rd in Doonan.

Drink drivers are on the decrease for the first time this year. It is good to see that the message is getting around that drink driving won’t be tolerated. Unfortunately drug

driving is still on the increase with an average of seven drivers being caught each month within Eumundi. I will continue to request drug driving testing units in Eumundi for a safer community. In the last two months 145 drivers have been ticketed by Road Policing Units (Traffic Branch) within Eumundi Police Division (95% speeding).

Four drivers have had vehicles taken off them for evading police or hooning offences.

We appreciate members of the public completing online traffic complaints, some members of the public have provided video footage which have led to court appearances this month.

Police Remembrance Day was held in September. On Behalf of Blair, Craig and I we would like to thank the member of the public who dropped off flowers and chocolates with no name on the card to the police station.

Community EUMUNDI GETS INTO THE SPOOKY SPIRIT Last Thursday, Eumundi kids rushed home from school with their friends, eager to change from mild mannered children into witches, ghouls, and superheroes.

Eumundi’s trick-or-treat trail was smaller this year with fewer houses part taking in lolly handouts and house decorating.

out in force to socialise, scare and scavenge for sugary treats.

The enduring Halloween lovers didn’t let the kids down with their haunted house and spooky garden displays attracting fantastic reactions from the crowds of kids.

Arts P L AY F U L O P E N I N G Last Friday night Sandy and Mark Bradley opened their new business in the heart of Eumundi on Memorial Dr with a crowd of friends showing support. Playshed will be offering creative workshops for people to discover art. “A lot of people don’t do art because they don’t think they’re creative but everyone can enjoy learning some new skills while having some fun,” Sandy explained.

“People with no experience can come along and create a piece of art that they’ll be really happy to have on their walls,” Sandy shared.

Some of the workshops Sandy will be offering include; candlemaking, paint and sip classes, painting, pop and graphiti art, Christmas decoration making. She’s also excited to get some community projects happening that will inject art back into the village. Sandy said 10 years ago there were galleries all over Eumundi. She’d like to see Eumundi express their creative side again.

Health the most effective medications are the intranasal steroid sprays.

The older ones are now overthe-counter items and others are available by prescription.

These sprays have a preventative action and are more effective when you use them before the pollen season begins. But otherwise they’ll start relieving symptoms after a few days.

Sprays must be used every day during the season for the best chance of relief and to minimise nasal side effects. They also alleviate allergic eye symptoms.”

People sometimes worry that these are steroid sprays, but they differ greatly from traditional oral steroids. The modern topical steroid sprays are scarcely absorbed into the body.

Some people with hay fever will have itchy watering eyes with redness. If this isn’t relieved with topical nasal sprays, topical antihistamine eye drops can be very effective. Rinsing the eyes with an artificial tear solution of saline fluid can also offer some soothing relief. Wearing sunglasses and splashing your eyes with water regularly can also help.

Those with severe and prolonged symptoms or who can’t gain adequate control with available medications, allergen-specific immunotherapy is available.

This should be prescribed by an allergy specialist who determines the correct “vaccine” for the therapy. The immunotherapy program may extend over three to four years and is the only therapy that can provide longlived benefit.

CHUNKY BUTT CHUTNEY

This is a tasty Christmas thank you to give to teachers, coaches, friends who let you stay at their beach shack, or just to have for the summer barbeques - and pretty much everyone loves a tomato chutney. What’s more this chutney turns your average snag into a gourmet delight! Now that tomatoes are getting cheaper it’s a good one to make a big batch of to last you into the new year - if you don’t give it all away.

This is a go-to recipe when there are cheap vegetables or when we go away over the summer holidays and we need to use up what’s in the fridge. It’s also a nice homemade Christmas pressie. The vegetables always vary depending on what is there is - I don’t think I’ve ever made the same batch twice! If you’re feeling daring, mix with cream cheese for a 70’s spin.

Ingredients

Method

• 500g ripe tomatoes

Chop all ingredients and put in heavy based pot.

• 500g green apples, cored • 500g brown onions • 2 garlic cloves, peeled • 240g white vinegar • 400g brown sugar • 4 tsp salt • 4 tsp paprika • 2 tsp mustard powder • 1 tsp chilli powder (more if desired) • 1 tbl tamari (Japanese soy sauce) • 200g tomato paste • 3 tsp curry powder

The smaller you chop the finer the chutney.

Add half the vinegar and salt then slowly bring to boil.

Stir regularly.

Add all remaining ingredients and cook for 30 -50 minutes depending on the consistency you’d like.

Put straight into sterilised jars with lids.

This is a large batch, so reduce the quantities for smaller batches.

Ingredients • 2 cloves of garlic • 1 brown onion • 1 red capsicum • 1 medium carrot • 75 gr cauliflower • 75g broccoli • 100g corn • 100g green beans • 200g zucchini • 200g sugar of choice (I’ve only tried with brown sugar) • 3 tsp turmeric • 4 tsp mustard powder • 1 tsp all spice • 1 and a half tbl sunflower oil • 1tbl salt • 1 and a half tbl water

• 2 small capsicum, red or green

Method Finely chop (or thicker if you prefer really chunky) all vegetables.

Place veggies, herbs and spices in a heavy based pot with a lid.

Cook on medium to high heat, stirring regularly until the vegetables start to steam up.

Don’t let it stick to the base and burn. Continue cooking and stirring for 30-40 minutes until vegetables are just cooked, not mushy.

Add the corn starch and water in a cup and mix.

Put mixture into chutney and continue stirring for 3-5 minutes to make sure it has mixed well.

Put in sterilised jars with lids.

Use on sandwiches, burgers, crackers and cheese.

Heritage BUSINESS HOUSES TOO! Wendy Birrell, Discover Eumundi manager The Eumundi Houses project at Discover Eumundi aims to find the location and ownership of many of Eumundi’s old and not so old houses, as well as who built them. With the support of a Sunshine Coast Council Heritage Grant it’s now full steam ahead for staff and volunteers working on this heritage project.

There are many resources at Discover Eumundi that will assist in the search including the photographic Street Survey Project done in 1998. Over 300 photographs, of Eumundi houses, were taken in the main streets of the town area with business houses included and even some outhouses! The Eumundi Houses project will see these buildings, and if they no longer exist, the locations rephotographed from the same angles for a ‘then and now’ comparison.

These new photos will then form part of an exhibition in Wan’din’in arts space in later 2020.

T he birth of our miniature foal

Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade have been extremely active lately.

Over the last week they’ve been called to Kilcoy and Teewah as well as to local fires in Doonan and Brooloo. Volunteer Geoff Garley was also sent to NSW to assist. Last Friday, with hot, dry and windy conditions ripe for fire, Eumundi was one of over 40 Brigade trucks on standby in the Nossa region with a callout to the Cooroibah fires coming Friday afternoon. Support from 4562 volunteer brigades to fight fires in the region continued over the weekend.

Total fire ban Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) has extended a local fire ban through to Friday 15 November for residents in the Sunshine Coast and Noosa Local Government Areas. The ongoing heightened fire conditions and lack of widespread rain increases the risk of bushfires.

All open fires are prohibited and all Permits to Light Fire have been cancelled. ruralfire.qld.gov.au.

Daisy was surrendered to us with her four-month old foal Chester, back in January. Just prior to coming to our farm we were told that Daisy had broken through the paddock gate and found a neighbourly stallion! Eleven months on, with Chester fully weened, we were suspicious Daisy was pregnant again as her belly had grown and her udder had become full.

A visit by my vet had confirmed our suspicions, so I started researching how I would be able to tell when to expect a new little foal. It is very common for the birth to take place in the hours of darkness or early morning.

The usual silence of my garden was disturbed by a strange scraping and crunching. Something was mysteriously lurking in my backyard. As I wondered what was prowling around, I glimpsed a pair of scaly legs doing their silly strut.

My research indicated the following signs when a mare could be 24 hours or less away

from giving birth: • Wax on the ends of teats • Licking stomach • Pacing • Standing still and wagging tail more than normal • Not eating • Lying down For two weeks I inspected Daisy’s teats every morning but there was no wax to be seen.

At 4.30am on the morning of 30 October, I got up as normal and went to let out the chooks and feed Daisy and her (now teenage) son Chester. Daisy took one look at me and then she lied down. A sign! I quickly grabbed my phone, a cushion and joined her in the paddock.

To get a closer look, I jumped over the rusty gate, around the shimmering dam, and hid between some long reeds on the water’s edge. As I stared at ‘what was once’ greenery, I was surprised to see that it had vanished and was replaced by dirt, moulding old leaves and bark chip. All grass had disappeared! I saw its red head, towering neck, jet black feathers and brown legs.

Suddenly its sly grin vanished as its head turned towards my direction. My eyes widened. It was a bush turkey!

Gobble, gobble, was the last

thing I heard before I was on a wild goose (or rather turkey) chase. The bush turkey, which I decided to call Henry, ran off frantically in the other direction. Fascinated by this extraordinary sight, I cautiously attempted to grab a closer look at Henry. You would not believe what happened next!

Henry, probably feeling threatened by my presence, grabbed my shirt, pecked me and circled around me until I was dazed. It was definitely an unexpected thing for a bush turkey to do. Dizzy, I fell over.

That was when Henry made his escape and disappeared. I am sure Henry will not be the last bush turkey to discover in my hinterland backyard.

I didn’t have to wait long. Within 20 minutes Daisy’s new foal was born!

Then after another 30 minutes the foal – a boy - was standing and within two hours he was feeding. At just two days old he was running around the paddock all fluffed up and ever so cute!

We ran a competition and he was named Benji. Daisy is doing great and she is such a good mother. It was an amazing experience and I was so lucky to have witnessed his birth.
