Notes

Editor’s note ... It can be hard for a town sometimes to know what it is or what it wants to be; country town, market town, backward town, eco town, friendly town, seven day a week town, ghost town – some locals don’t want anything to change; “If you don’t like it – leave!” Others want to see it evolve; “It should be an arts hub.” But I’m wondering, if you push and pull a place in too many directions, is it in danger of losing its community heart? This issue one local shows us that sometimes it just takes a little heart to add to a village’s sense of place.

Just Love Eumundi! Making Eumundi livable... A local supermarket?

Feedback from residents and business stakeholders over recent months has indicated the importance for more opportunities for locals to shop in town. And, the viabilty of a small supermarket ket or perhaps a providore is regularly raised as a point of discussion. Eumundi already has a popular convenience store and many consider this sufficient for the town. However, those seeking a larger grocery offer, such as an IGA or other type of mini-supermarket upermarket should aware that whilst an IGA can be as small as 160sqm with one or two checkouts, rear entry ry is a requir requirement for deliveries as well as off-street parking. Boutique style mini marts like Foodworks and Friendly Grocer present a different style, where street parking may be acceptable. These may also suit a country town like ours, but still fulfill the needs for a weekly household grocery shop - with a small deli; cooked chooks; fresh produce; large shelf area for grocery lines; large fridge/freezer.

Preserving reserving a little bit of history

Representives of ECCO, EDCA and 4562 Eumundi Online Mag met with Councillors Greg Rogerson and Steve Robinson last week to discuss the appropriate aesthetic to the new bridge on Eumundi Range Road, replacing our beautiful old timber one - that has served this part of the highway faithfully for more than a century. In the spirit of cooperation and in recognition of the history and loveliness of this old crossing, Council have agreed to enhance the architectural elements of the railings and balustrades as well as re-purposing some of the old timber superstructure to create a new rest shelter area and shelter lter on the Southern approach.

Would you do your weekly grocery shop at a small supermarket such as these? NEW B&B OWNERS

Kerrie Bryant-Adams, ECC Secretary

Louise and Marko and their eight year old daughter Ellen, recently relocated from Sydney’s inner west to take ownership of the Gridley Homestead B&B in Eumundi. The couple said their decision to take on this beautiful property and well established business was based on a passion for customer service, cooking and gardening. Having family at Coolum Beach also played a big part in the move and the new owners said they plan to fully enjoy everything the Sunshine Coast has to offer.

A warmer than usual winter morning saw more than 25 members and guests attend the July breakfast in “Wandin’in” - the new meeting place and gallery space behind the Discover Eumundi (DE) building. Guests heard from DE Manager, Wendy Birrell about the process of tendering for the space. It was a welcome surprise for many who were yet to visit the museum. The guest speaker Ben Simpson of the Stockland Group gave a presentation on the long term plans for the Kawana-Birtinya hospital and education precinct, the long term economic and commercial impact on the area and how this multi-billion dollar project would provide long term job opportunities for the Coast. Ben also spoke about the Caloundra South project which has been in the pipeline for the past 36 years and is in the final throws of finalising approvals. He stated that this project held a “6 green star rating” and

that the Stockland philosophy was around sustainability and creating lifestyles not just about putting up buildings. The Caloundra South project will be of an equivalent size to that of the City of Gladstone and will be a sustainable city in its own right attracting investors, businesses and home owners. It is a thoroughly planned city from the ground up and which will have wonderful facilities and green open spaces for residents of all ages to enjoy. Ben offered Chamber members a visit to the Kawana-Birtinya hospital precinct. We will be organising a bus trip and morning tea for one of our future Chamber meetings. A big thank you to Ben for the update on these economic initiatives that are attracting investors to the Coast. Don’t forget to register for the Networking Night: Thur 27 August from 5.30pm. CRUISE BUSLOADS VISIT OEM Pacific Pearl cruise ship passengers filled four, 57-seat buses to travel to the Original Eumundi Markets (OEM) on Sat 18 July. Chair of the OEM Board, Andrew Moon was on hand to welcome the tourists and said the visit was the direct result of targeted marketing by the OEM team. “We welcomed them with big smiles, and had our roving stilt-walking performer Mary dressed in a custom-made cruise ship - made entirely from balloons - the visitors loved it, and it made for great photo opportunities!,” Andrew said.

Pacific Pearl is scheduled to return on Friday August 21 and another two more cruise ship visits are scheduled for 2015 with up to 12 more in 2016. Tourism body Sunshine Coast Destination Limited and cruise operator P&O both reported how impressed they were with the warm welcome the cruisers received from the markets and the Eumundi community. 5

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT S TE V E C A M PB EL L DE SI GN Steve Campbell What and where is your business? What do you offer? Steve Campbell Design is a building design business based in Weyba Downs that specialises in renovations and extensions, new residential and small commercial projects. Each project ranges from providing highly professional service for basic council approved plans, right through to a more comprehensive set of architectural drawings and specifications. How long have you been in business? I started my own practice in 2011 after spending four years working with a sustainable architectural firm, where we designed innovative projects from straw bale houses to school community halls on the Sunshine Coast. Equipped with this experience I have now been operating my own sustainable building design practice, which has been extremely rewarding. What is the best thing about working here? It is so easy to be inspired and feel the creative juices flowing in this environment, where we are surrounded by amazing beaches, crystal clear waterways, stunning mountains and an abundance of wildlife. What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here? Too many houses and buildings are not adequately designed to cater for the cold weather. So many people I speak to complain that their house is freezing during the colder months. It is not very difficult or more expensive to design for both hot and cold conditions to provide a more comfortable and relaxing environment. You can tell that I feel the cold! What would you like to see change in our business district? I would love to see that new developments or older buildings being renovated are required to follow certain guidelines on sustainability that reduces their impact on the community. Just by harnessing the sun and the wind we can dramatically reduce our reliance on artificial heating and cooling, simple design strategies can be inexpensive and easy to build into a project and can return substantial savings and benefits well into the future for the client, the community and the world we live in.

Rotary Clubs of Eumundi and Cooroy came together at Joe’s Waterhole Hotel in Eumundi recently to farewell their International Exchange Student from northern France, Pauline Tiberghien. “I cannot thank Rotary enough for providing me with this wonderful opportunity to come to Australia, to live in another country, and to experience a different culture.”

Pauline was home hosted by four families from Eumundi and Cooroy and went to school at St Teresa’s Catholic College. Pauline’s Rotary Counsellor, Lyn Hodges, said that Pauline had been a model exchange student. “She has been an absolute joy to have around and has thrown herself into every opportunity that has been presented to her,” Lyn shared.

Community THE ART OF HEART WHISPERING Over the last couple of months, handmade metal hearts have been appearing - as if by magic - hanging outside Eumundi businesses and homes, and quietly transforming our landscape with symbols of love and creativity. Visions of ‘The Heart Whisperer’ as some story book elf, working away by candlelight bending metal to his will, then under the cover of darkness hanging another heart and casting another spell of happiness, prompted the Green to discover the story behind our new hearts and ask the Heart Whisperer - Grant Rothwell about his beautiful compulsion.

Eumundi Range Road bridge

A different kind of canvas

Work is now underway on the new $1.65 million bridge on Eumundi Range Rd. The old bridge cannot be maintained any longer. This new bridge meets modern engineering standards and has an estimated lifespan of 100 years. It will be almost 6m wider, with two 3.5m traffic lanes, 1.2m road shoulders and a 2m pedestrian walkway on the eastern side. We’re still looking at options for the final ‘look and feel’ of the bridge, but Council aims for this new bridge to be sympathetic to the character of Eumundi as much as possible while complying with design codes.

It was great to help launch the Australian Body Art Festival, which Sunshine Coast Council is proud to support.

The two-lane detour track recently constructed right next to the bridge means there will be little inconvenience for people travelling on Eumundi Range Rd. Please stick to the reduced speed limit of 40km/h to ensure the safety of those working on the bridge.

Grant came to heart making by accident – literally! When reaching for a bottle of reserve Pinot to pour another glass for himself and his Irish lover, an old Italian barrel hoop tripped him up. He later noticed the circle barrel ring had transformed into a heart and Grant felt this was a perfect reflection of his love of romance, wine and circumstance – how a mishap can create opportunity. “Living on the Eumundi Noosa Rd and having interstate visitors find it difficult to find my actual address, I decided to paint the hoop (aka wine barrel ring) red,” Grant explained. “I fixed it to a revolving bracket and positioned it high up a tree out the Photo thanks to Sacha Hamilton-MacLaren front of the property - I would say, ‘Keep an eye This lovely lady was Elfi from The out for the big red heart up the Nest in the Old Bakery and she tree,’ he shared.” offered Grant space in her shop to sell his hearts. “I became Several weeks after hanging the inspired by the stories we shared first heart on the busy roadside, a of travel, romances and also Eumundi lady knocked on Grant’s local businesses struggling to door and asked if he sold the make ends meet,” Grant said. hearts and could she have two: one for herself and another for Grant moved to the Noosa area her friend going through difficult over 24 years ago to open a times. “The following day I was wine business in Hastings St. He walking down Memorial Dr and a said he has found a great love beautiful woman called out to me, for the relaxed lifestyle here and “Hey Heart Whisperer!” and the name has stuck,” Grant explained. The festival is on in Eumundi from 16 -18 October, and this year’s theme is POP trashion – a cool melding of the Neo Warhol movement with enviro fashion style. Renowned Australian artist Emma Hack will be joined by a host of talented artisans. It will be a really exciting three day festival full of body painting, fashion, street art, music, photography, beauty and street culture! It’s great to have such an outstanding event right here in Eumundi. I look forward to joining festival organisers in welcoming visitors from far and wide and if the official launch recently held at Gary Crick Auto Noosaville, was anywhere near the expected standard, residents and tourists alike are in for a fantastic event.

2 0 1 5 B O D Y A R T O FF I C I A L LY L A U N C H E D The all new Australian Body Art Festival (ABAF) was officially launched recently in front of media, VIP guests and local arts patrons at the Cricks Noosaville showroom. The event gave a sneak peek of what to expect at the festival which will take place in the arts hub of Eumundi from 16-18 October. Special guests included ABAF marquee artist and renowned international body painter Emma Hack, who flew to the Coast from Adelaide especially for the launch, presenting an incredible 50’s style body art on her model. Emma explained, “When I started there was no internet or record of who was body painting around the world, so as one of the pioneers of this art form, I am proud of the talent our country has and how the movement has evolved.”

Emma was joined by airbrushing artist Symon Molony, body painter Nina Neher, and Peter Dwyer from Sydney’s Whitehouse School of Design who created the upcycled outfits worn by the models. Event organiser Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher (pictured above bottom left) launched the exciting event. “We are thrilled to introduce this high level restaging of the Australian Body Art Festival and have expectations of around 15,000 attendees for this iconic event, which will, in coming years, become a premier Australian emerging arts festival,” Anthony said.

Also speaking at the event were: Original Eumundi Markets Board Chair Andrew Moon, ABAF platinum partner Gary Ogilvy of Cricks Noosa, and Andrea Nave, CEO of Forget-Me-Not – this year’s official charity. The final surprise at the launch was the unveiling of a Fiat 500 valued at $19,000 that’s been specially skinned in the theme of this year’s Festival: POP Trashion. The brightly coloured vehicle will travelling around Brisbane and the Coast to promote the event and will be raffled off, with the winner being drawn on 18 October.

Between You and Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen is based on Mary Norris’s 37 years of experience as copy editor for The New Yorker magazine. Through her experiences and insights (revealed in her self-deprecating and irreverent style), we learn about the culture and practice of this iconic magazine and the city it has come to represent. We find out what a copy editor does and what goes into publishing such a magazine. We also learn something about the writing personalities of some very famous people. I really loved this book and I’m trying to pin down just why. I admit I have spent more time in my life reading than has probably been good for me: literature was my favourite subject in school and my major subject at university, but I never thought I would come to actually enjoy grammar. I think I smugly saw all those sentence diagrams as a necessary evil but a drag on creativity; a writer/speaker should somehow absorb the correct usage through reading and speaking rather than memorising. In spite of my earlier prejudices, some style books have become old friends, creative works in themselves: I have a very battered 50 year old copy of Stunk and White’s The Elements of Style, which I used in university and is now in its 5th edition. I also like Australian author Mark Tredinnick’s, the

little green grammar book because it makes grammar both relevant and interesting, but I wouldn’t read either of them for pleasure. Books about grammar either prescribe or describe usage, but the best ones, like Mary Norris’s, contemplate and interpret how and why we use the words, punctuation and syntax that make up written language, by revealing how much is behind all those little marks on a page: culture, history, relativity of meaning. That’s what makes it so fascinating. An arcane subject made accessible. This is also a surprisingly funny book. I really did laugh out loud. I agree with Kate Grenville when she says of Between You & Me: Confessions of a Comma Queen, “It’s exactly my idea of a good read.”

Facebook has been on fire for the past few months with fabulous old pictures and great tales of history about North Arm State School, which turns 130 this year. The school’s heritage will be celebrated with a giant school reunion and country fun fair on Saturday 12 September. From 10am reunion registration opens, followed by the official opening ceremony, the 30 year old time capsule opening and cake cutting. Then the fun fair will kick off at 12 until 7pm with: an old-time photo booth, maypole dancer, head spinning rides, toad racing, live music, animal farm, plus yummy food and drink stalls. The day will end with a BIG BANG – fireworks! Entry free! All welcome. Link up and share your stories! Facebook: North Arm School Reunion – 130 Year Celebration; ntharmss.eq.edu.au.

T h e ta l e o f t h e cyclone North Arm State School has marked many highlights in its 130 year history and of course has its own struggles. In 1954 a cyclone with 130-km/ hr winds lifted the North Arm Hall from its stumps and in a matter of seconds crashed it to the ground. The hall which was the church, Sunday School, dance hall and school hall to the people of North Arm for

more than a generation was destroyed. In true community style, the people of North Arm held a fundraising day. The local paper reported, “All day more than 300 people ran foot races, rode in a gymkhana, threw brooms, pushed barrows

and competed in a terrific program of open-air events. At dusk many families rushed home to milk cows. At night they were back for the

official opening dance. And outside the gay new hall was the biggest collection of cars and trucks in North Arm’s history.”

E S S FU L L O F FA N TA S T I C PERFORMERS Last week Eumundi State School’s talented performers entertained parents, teachers and students with many an impressive stage show. At school assembly Glee Club performed a brilliantly choreographed dance and Eumundi’s Got Talent performances are continuing to entertain students and parents and impress judges and teachers. This week sees the Preps – Year 2’s take to the stage.

In 1923, the enormous Yankee Stadium was built in the Bronx, New York. It was home to the New York Yankees baseball team, and their legendary slugger, Babe Ruth. The seating capacity was 70,000. At the time it was one of the biggest stadiums in the world. In 1974, the stadium was refurbished, at massive cost. It had new floodlights, an instant replay telescreen - and refurbished seats. But strangely, the capacity went down to 57,000. Then in 2006 the new Yankee Stadium was built, even bigger than its predecessor. It remains the most expensive stadium ever constructed (at a cost of $2.3

billion USD). But the seating capacity went down again, this time to 50,000. So why did the number of seats go down, not up? It wasn’t anything to do with construction costs: no expense was spared. And it wasn’t anything to do with demand for tickets: this has doubled over the last 50 years. It was everything to do with the average size of the American posterior. Over the last century, Americans have become bigger and fatter, and so have their seats (by about 2 inches). Because of this change, fewer Americans now fit into stadiums. This is a worldwide trend. Australians are getting fatter too. Almost two-thirds of

adult Australians are overweight or obese. Amongst retirees, the figure is 75%. And these numbers are going up and up: fatness has become an epidemic. If it were just a question of the seating capacity at Lang Park, this wouldn’t be such a big issue. But overweight and obesity affect just about every body system: skin, joints, nerves, arteries, brain, heart, liver and blood. Corpulence even increases cancer risk. The consequences are multi-system diseases, incapacity and pain, and the risk of an early grave. The causes of overweight and obesity are very complex. The brain has an area called the

satiety centre which controls appetite. This responds to leptin, a hormone produced by fat. In most people, leptin suppresses appetite. But for unknown reasons, this negative feedback is lost in obese individuals, a phenomenon known as leptin resistance. Despite these complexities, we know that overweight and obesity can be controlled by simple lifestyle changes. So if you are worried about carrying excess fat, see your GP, who can help you start a programme of diet and exercise. You might even take up a new sport. As a participant - not a spectator.

Camp oven pizza

Part of the joy of a camping holiday is that you forgo certain aspects of day-to-day life - except if it means missing pizza night! Homemade pizza is a way of life among our friends - the sort with fresh tomato, basil, rocket and chilli from the garden. We planned in advance, making sure the “00” flour and dried yeast were packed, but aside from that, we used what we had and ended up with absolutely amazing wood fire pizza! Perfect bases, crispy cheese on top and with the smoky flavour of the wood fire made these unforgettable. So dust off the camp oven, get the fire going and give these a go for a delicious winter treat. Ingredients: • • • • •

500 g fine Italian “00” flour 1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt 1 x 7 g dried yeast sachet 1 dessert spoon caster sugar 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 325 ml lukewarm water Method: Put flour in bowl with salt and dried yeast. Mix together. Make well in the centre then add water and olive oil together at room temperature. Mix wet and dry ingredients together with your hands, until it forms a ball, then gently knead the dough for approx 10mins. The consistency should be stretchy and elastic and hold together well. The elasticity is created throughout

the kneading process so keep going until this happens. Cover the ball of dough in the mixing bowl with a damp tea towel. Rest the dough until it doubles in size (with this quantity of dough, in warm weather, this will take approx. 1hr). When volume has doubled, knead again for approx. 5mins and then return to the bowl and cover with damp tea towel until volume has doubled again. (approx. 1hr). When the dough has doubled the second time, separate the dough into smaller balls and roll it out on a lightly floured surface using a rolling pin (or wine bottle). Create a shape that will fit easily in your camp oven. Put each base on top 15

of the other using a piece of baking paper to separate them and head over to the fire. Prepare the camp oven; pour in some olive oil and wipe it around the inside of the camp oven until surface is lightly covered. Lightly dust with flour, then add camp oven to the coals, placing the lid on and some coals on top of the oven. Leave it to heat up for 5mins. Temperature of your fire can make a big difference, so you may have to adjust these times to suit. Placing the coals outside the fire makes it easier to control the temperature and easier to manage the pizzas going in and out without burning yourself! Pre-cook the pizza bases; one by one, put each pizza base

{ T H E G R E E N 5 August 2015

in the oven with the lid on for approx. 5mins to seal the base of the pizza. The top will still be raw, but having the bottom sealed shortens the cooking time and makes it easier to handle. As each one is sealed, put it to one side. When your bases have been pre-cooked, simply add your favourite toppings to each one, and cook them one by one in the camp oven with the lid on. Putting coals on top of the lid will ensure your pizza is well cooked on the top as well as the bottom. Depending on the heat of your fire and amount of toppings on your pizza, they will take between 5-10mins each. Remove gently from camp oven, slice it up and enjoy!

In June last year we completed the first round of funding and at June 2015 we completed the first stage of the second lot of funding. The Sports field Maintenance Funding Program has very strict guidelines as to how the funds are spent. The program is about improving the actual playing field. So groundsman Geoff Green and I have learnt new skills in green keeping and you’ll notice the grounds are looking much better - It’s not just the grass. I would like to thank the other members of the Showgrounds Committee for the support they’ve given to Geoff and myself. As a part of receiving the grant we are required to advise the public of the very generous role the Council is playing. These funds have offered the Showgrounds Committee an excellent opportunity to manage

Please note as a direct result of the improvements to the health of the grass we seldom use the integrated sprinkler system which was put in place when the grounds were first constructed. We have already put in place a program for the allocation of the next lot of funds 2015-2016. This program will include further soil testing, surface aeration and top dressing with turf sand.

What you’re saying on Facebook …

believes it was a wonderful place to raise his children. Grant relocated to Eumundi a few years ago and now works as a mentor with a group of carers supporting people “struggling with the challenges of life.” Making the metal hearts is a way for Grant to physically share his support. “The pleasure of gifting some hearts to people and them feeling and sharing “The love” is why I do it,” Grant explained.

Off leash park for Eumundi? There’s little doubt the 4562 region has a high pooch population and a dog out for a morning walk (coffee stop) with (or without) its owner is a common sight on most of our streets. An off-the-leash area in the Eumundi township would give dog owners a safe place to play and socialise with other pooches when visiting the township. An enclosed off-the-leash area has been on the wish list of the community for a number of years.

Rebecca Frith: Yes please from us too. Katie Harvison: Yes, yes, yes, please.

“After living in the town for several years I have gotten to know a lot of wonderful people: some are talented artists, others are small business owners, and quite a few are going through difficult times, yet always reaching out to help others,” he said.

Heidi Jenkins: That would be absolutely fantastic! Yes please.

Katherine Hartshorne: Everyone could contact local councillor - Cr Greg Rogerson about it. An off leash area would be great! Shana Flanagan: Yes the Showgrounds would be a lovely place if it was of some use to the locals, not always locked up like Fort Knox for us to all admire from afar. Jessica Cahill: Can we make an area more central to town? I like to grab a coffee whilst my pooch is socialising. Kylie Oakes: Yes great idea! Anthea Wood: Yes, I agree, it would be well used.

“I use the hearts as a visual reminder for not only locals but visitors alike to remember to spread the love within the community and support local businesses,” Grant shared.

Helen Zelinski Rutland: Yes, there are some lovely dogs in our township and they should have their own playground. Sarah Hillhouse: Actually, when I travel with my dog interstate I just take him to nearby showgrounds and parks and give him a run ... I don’t have to ask permission from anyone, I just do it. Is it really necessary for us to ask permission? It’s our showground why don’t we just use it? There is no NO DOGS signs anywhere. Why are we letting ourselves be excluded from our own local showgrounds?

Now that Memorial Dr is covered in a generous sprinkling of Hearts, what’s next for Grant and his whispering Hearts? All the houses? cows? cars? “[There’s] such a variety of things to cover… it would be great to see neighbouring areas with hearts too... I feel with the “love injection” covering the main street of Eumundi hopefully this will attract not only market visitors but also bring people from other areas around the Sunshine Coast every other day to strengthen our towns local businesses and show off our talented local artists. “I must say it does give me pleasure to go for a country drive and see one of the Heart Whispering mobiles hanging high in a tree - tells me others are sharing the LOVE and perhaps a wine or two,” Grant smiled.

RE SPONSE TO SHOWGROUND REQUE S T The Green approached the Eumundi Showgrounds Committee to ask if the grounds could be ulitised by local dog walkers. A Committee Member informed that due to previous dog walkers not cleaning up after their pets, the showgrounds could not be used for this purpose as the area is a sports ground utilised by children. Locals are however welcome to use the area for personal fitness and should contact the groundsman to open the gate.
