Notes Editor’s note ... This was another issue where we were spoilt for local content and contributions – which meant we were also tight on space. We cover the efforts of some of our community groups, including such things as the Rotary Business awards, RV pack, and heritage showcase. We also introduce our first music page, courtesy of wonderful volunteer writer Kim Johnson. It may be officially autumn, but we’re still living the tropical lifestyle with backyard barbies, swims after school, thunder storm light shows, movies under the stars, and busy beer gardens in the village - it’s a lovely time of year. The readers’ photos capture our wonderful region at its finest, and I’m constantly impressed by the quality of the images that are sent my way – please keep them coming.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Eumundi Colon He alth

Melinda Morris

Where is your business and what do you offer? Eumundi Colon Health is on Seib Road off Noosa Eumundi Rd, allowing for privacy and tranquillity. We offer colon hydrotherapy, a gentle non-invasive procedure infusing the colon with UV filtered water helping reduce toxins, eliminate waste, holistically detox and restore balance to wellbeing. How long have you been in business? After 19 years of experiencing the benefits of this therapy, I started my business last year. What made you choose this area to base your business? We found a piece of paradise - which was perfect for this new opportunity. What is the best thing about working here? For me personally, the Eumundi community embraces holistic health and wellbeing, it’s a very diverse environment and the people here are open-minded. What is the worst thing you’ve found about working here? The local community could support small businesses more. If you haven’t tried it before, give it a go. You will be pleasantly surprised. What would you like to see change in our business district? A supermarket and newsagent would attract more people locally and it would be so convenient.

Business D u nny design f inalist David Teeland, Director of the Doonan based award winning Teeland Architects, was one of the 12 finalists announced recently for the unique Kenilworth Designer Dunny building design competition. Council, along with the Kenilworth community, requested designers submit plans to build a new public toilet at Isaac Moore Park, which is a popular recreation area. The aim of the project is to create

an iconic, yet functional, facility that attracts attention for the rural township.Having previously been a finalist in the Kenilworth Art Prize, David was compelled to enter the inspiring project. “I thought it was a wonderful idea,” he explained, “I love the Kenilworth Valley for its sheer natural beauty - it is a wonderful little town with a great sense of community.” To fulfil the brief, the design needed to be: four metres above ground to be above flood level; capture attention; utilise natural light and ventilation; Interior dunny design

embrace local history; foster a sense of community and; contribute to the artistic community. David explained his building has been designed as a sculptural element that compliments the undulating landscape. “[My design is a] primary form that echoes the spirit and history of the Kenilworth Valley and the surrounding mountains,” he explained. “Once you pass into the structure you enter another world with light streaming in from above the stories of the local people [that] are depicted in beautiful visual renderings on the ceilings and walls,” David shared. The competition winner will be announced of second week of March. teeland.com.au

ECCO General Manager Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher said, “The RV Pack will be a great opportunity to welcome and create more business in town courtesy of Grey Nomads and international gap year travellers searching out cool stuff.”

The information and offers are also integrated into the new updated Experience Eumundi website which is now smart phone and tablet friendly. If you’re interested in being included in Eumundi’s Welcome kit email Anthony at gm@eumundicco.com.au This is a joint venture between Eumundi Rotary, Eumundi Combined Community Organisation and Eumundi Chamber of Commerce.

Community M E E T T H E D I V I S I O N 1 0 C A N D I D AT E S Sue Pele

I have gratefully lived on the Sunshine Coast for over 18 years. I love the people, the lifestyle and our community and can’t imagine living anywhere else. My career and volunteer history includes diverse areas such as youth, mental health, corrections, disabilities, seniors, homelessness, First Nations people, community service, schools, P&C President, retail and small business. I have a strong gift of empathy and an understanding of everyday human experience, as well as a track record of delivery. I have a keen interest and personal experience in independent business, and in retail. People who know and work with me say they appreciate my gift to listen and really hear their needs. We have both strengths and challenges in Eumundi and all of Division 10. Eumundi already has a strong and active community that I would like to partner with. We have exceptional niche local businesses, a beautiful hinterland and a vibrant community with endless potential. We can develop sustainable business and entrepreneurship while

championing the best for those less fortunate in all regions of Division 10. I have a passion for empowering the community to thrive and achieve the results they desire. It is important to me that Council is not dictating change but rather having authentic consultation and truly listening to community needs. I see myself as a partner in empowering local communities to create their vision. My promise is to “Keep it True” - transparency, diversity and inclusion through all of our community endeavors. facebook.com/Sue.Pele Mike Strano

of minor operational issues of little or no strategic importance or significance to the majority of residents and ratepayers. No comment on important issues such as using ratepayers’ funds in supporting selected business sectors, waiving or subsidising developers’ contributions and the flow on negative effects this has for the residents and ratepayers. Supporting each insensitive and successive flawed Town Plan is another example. These practices clearly translate to additional cost burdens and lost opportunities for residents and ratepayers. It is in part due to this mismanagement of our funds, that our rates keep going up - over and above the CPI! With nothing to show for the residents and ratepayers. What’s required in your street, neighbourhood, community? Projects and services that you should be getting but do not, as a result of the current regime’s disgraceful approach to decision making. Much of this decision making is also carried out behind closed doors under the dubious protection of “Commercial in Confidence”.

It is disappointing and very concerning that many existing and prospective Local Government Candidates rarely or never talk about the more urgent and challenging issues in Division 10, their Divisions and the Shire. Rather it seems to be a “trust me” approach and most content put forward, is usually

8

What could be the reason for a Commercial in Confidence approach when the issues of local government are for the people by the people. Do you want this style of governance to continue after this election? We want true democracy, I will provide this for Division 10. www.michaelstrano.com

Arts

Art ist Spot lig ht Z oe S mith G raphic artist and painter How would you describe your artwork? A mixture of illustration, fine art and installation. I paint, draw, and use typography while also creating work people can participate in. My drawings are often figurative and surreal, while my street art is nearly always text. In my paintings I like replacing women’s heads with domestic objects as part of my ironic view of housework. How long have you been using Graphic Design to make art? I have been a graphic designer for five years now. I have been a visual artist for four years and I was an interior designer for ten years before that… So I guess I have always used design creatively and professionally. Where do you work and why? And how long have you been in this space? Currently I work from my studio space at home here in

Eumundi, although I also call Humdrum my ‘office’ because I need to be able to study and do design work remotely too. I have been in Eumundi only six months and I was in Noosa for four years before we made the tree change. What is your connection to this region/Eumundi? I have many friends in Eumundi, all creative professionals also. Wandering the markets, talking to people informs my art practice immensely and is a welcomed contrast to sitting in my studio alone. Also being part of a smaller community became important to me. As a single mother I wanted to raise my son within a positive community environment especially a creative one! What or who is your inspiration? Many Modernist artists and writers, especially the Dada and Surrealist movements, influence my work. Also conceptual feminist artists such as the

Guerrilla Girls, Barbara Kruger, and Martha Rosler provide satire and inspiration. It has to crack me up or have shock factor for me to really pay attention! Travel also inspires, going to museums and galleries such as the Getty and Tate Modern are extremely motivating. What can’t you work without? Coffee! Also a public environment – I find ironically I can focus and be more productive when at a café or library than I can at home. It also provides friendly networking. I am studying again and I find it extremely helpful to talk to people in between reading and writing essays - weird I know, but I acknowledge procrastination and distraction. Where is your work currently on display? Some street art pieces are currently at Generator Gallery

NOURISHING YOUNG MINDS Did you know that a child’s physical, emotional AND mental wellbeing can have a huge effect on their ability to learn? As a chef I have always focused on healthy eating as playing a very important role in the development of my child, however more and more I have been hearing, researching and learning about the benefits of mindfulness - mental wellbeing - for our children - and ourselves as adults as well. Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present moment. When you’re being mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judging them good or bad. Mindfulness means living in the moment and awakening to experience. My sister Rachel in her role as wellness teacher at a school in North Queensland has been using mindfulness techniques for quite a while now, with amazing results. She’s found mindfulness helps children who are: experiencing emotional issues and problems at school; struggling with a difficult home environment; overcome with anxiety and stress. And it’s also been beneficial for the school population as a whole. When

Liesl Doery

asked if the school children at her school respond well to the techniques she said, “When you have kids asking you if they can spend their lunch break lying on a mat and take some time to be by themselves, you know it’s something that is desperately needed in our schools.” Many of the skills and strategies my sister uses can be found at the website Yoga Tools for Schools. So how do we teach our kids (and ourselves) to live in the moment? The easiest and most obvious way is through our senses: sound, sight, touch, taste, smell. Allowing ourselves to really see what is happening in front of us, really listen to the sounds around us, really feel all the sensations occurring within our bodies at this particular moment in time cont’d on pg 18

Health WORMS AIN’T WORMS Intestinal parasites such as worms are one of the more common queries that we are presented with in community pharmacy. A recent experience where one of my chickens left a deposit on our back veranda that contained a disgusting, wriggling mass of white worms, sent me rushing to dose my children as well as every animal in sight with worming medicine. This reaction although completely understandable is not based on any logic, and it is a common misconception that when our animals need to be wormed we should also worm everybody else in the family. The most common worm that infects people in Australia is threadworm (also known as pin worm). Most parasitic worms

Tania Watson, Pharmacist

are generally host specific. This means dog worms like dogs, cat worms like cats and so on. Threadworms look like short pieces of white cotton about 5-10mm long) that move. They are not transmitted from animals such as cats or dogs. People can catch other worms from animals such as hookworm, or hydatid disease, however this is not common in Australia. Threadworm is transmitted when an individual ingests or inhales the eggs of the worm. These can then hatch in the gut, where they move to the small and large intestine where they live and mature over about four-eight weeks. When mature, the female worm moves down to the anus where she lays thousands of eggs and then dies. This usually

happens at night when the person is asleep or relaxed. It is the glue that the worms stick the eggs to the anus that causes skin irritation. This leads the infected person to scratch the area. The eggs then stick to fingers and are easily transferred to the mouth, to food and to other people, thereby continuing the lifecycle of the worm. The eggs can survive outside a human body for two-three weeks. Many anti-worm preparations, such as pyrantel (brand names include Anthel and Combantrin) and mebendazole (e.g. Vermox) can be bought over-the-counter at pharmacies. Some anti-worm medicines are unsuitable for pregnant women or children aged less than 24 months. Suspensions and chocolate

squares are available for children. It is important to treat everyone living in the same house as the infected person and the doses should be given at the same time. A second dose may be repeated in two weeks to kill any eggs or worms that survived the first treatment. It is important to note that worming medicine does not prevent an infection, so routine dosing is not advised. Showering on the night the medicine is given and again the next morning is important to remove eggs laid during the night. It is also important to wash the bedding and towels and clean the house to remove the eggs. Other advice to remove eggs and prevent re-infection include: cont’d on pg 18

Sour cream poppy seed cake Valda Andrews This is another old family favourite, one I have been making for over 30 years. Served slightly warm, with cream, yoghurt, ice cream - or just plain - it is always a palate pleaser. When I first received this recipe from America I used to make it for a couple of Brisbane coffee shops where it became very popular. Ingredients • 1 cup sugar

Fold in stiffly beaten egg whites and poppy seeds.

• Grated rind of 1 orange

Pour into a well-greased fluted ring tin (approx. 26 cm) or a fairly large spring form ring tin. It is better in a ring tin because of the denseness of the mixture.

• 1 ¾ cups plain flour

Bake at 160°C for one hour.

• 1 tsp baking powder

• 200 gm poppy seeds

Let cake rest in tin for 10 mins after removing from the oven as it’s too delicate to turn out straight away. Turn out on to a plate with a lip and cool for half an hour.

Method

Pour hot syrup over the top.

Cream butter and sugar well.

Citrus Syrup

Add egg yolks one at a time and beat well.

• Grated rind of 2 oranges

Add sour cream and orange rind then lightly fold in.

• Juice of 1 lemon

Sift flour, baking powder and bi-carb and fold in.

Boil all together.

• 1 cup butter • 3 egg yolks • 1 cup sour cream

• 1 tsp bi-carb soda • 3 egg whites

• Juice of 2 oranges • 3/4 cup sugar Simmer to reduce slightly. 15

Have you ever heard of a gnomon? I thought that they were little guardians of the garden! No, silly me, that’s a gnome! A gnomon is the shadow-casting object on a sundial. It’s a funny word, I know. It means “one that knows or examines”. Sundials have been around for a very, very, VERY long time (like 1500BC or before), and before the invention of the clock they were the only source of time. Sundials work by casting the sun’s shadow onto the dial face or dial plate. This will show you the local solar time. With some designs you may even be able to tell the time of year. There are a few different types of sundial. The common type you may see in someone’s garden, like the one pictured, which is in my Mother’s garden, are called horizontal sundials. However there are many other types of sundial of different shapes including spheres, cylinders and cones. You must know the latitude of where you are and where true north is to set up your sundial. Many sundials, traditionally,

have a motto. The one pictured says: “Some tell of storms and showers, I tell of Sunny Showers”. I think that a sundial is a lovely addition to any garden. It will become a centrepiece and will keep many people, including kids (and gnomes), intrigued. You can make your own sundial and it is all very technical and mathematical but very fascinating! The Yandina Community Gardens will be hosting a Sundial Workshop, by Phillip Richards, on Sat 12 March 9.30am.

I have often sighted two elderly gentlemen walking their bikes along Eumundi Road collecting rubbish along the roadside. Recently I noticed the bikes have given way to foot patrol. As I have been driving on the occasions I have witnessed their acts of community care, I’ve never been able to stop and say thank you, I hope you publish this as an acknowledgement of their efforts. Mindfulness - cont’d from pg 12 - without making judgment on these sensations - without letting our mind carry us away to another time and place - without worrying about the “what ifs”, the “if onlys”... Some of the techniques that can be used to strengthen mindfulness are: deep and focused breathing exercises, attentive listening exercises, and an exercise called body scanning, where we gently move our mind’s focus over each and every part of the body in a gentle flowing rhythm, holding focus on different parts and then moving on. This allows the mind to let go, and Worms - cont’d from pg 13 • change and wash underwear, nightwear, bedding and towels for a few days. • Do not share towels. • Scrub fingernails and keep nails short and clean.

They also become more socially aware and foster a connection to their environment. MAC IS MISSING - PLEASE HELP! We lost our beloved parrot Mac on Sunday morning from the Doonan area near Viewland Drive. His name is Mac (Mackie is what he calls himself when he talks), he is an 18 month old hand raised Alexandrine and is a huge part of our family. He got a fright and flew off, then was spooked again by a Kingfisher. We have also notified RSPCA. Our contact numbers are 0431 957 686 or 0438 877 932. Your help in getting word around would be greatly appreciated. Kind Regards, Jane Hansen.
