Notes Editor’s note ... Happy Easter hinterlanders.
A HINTERLAND MOMENT
I hope the bunny came to your place and left chocolate treats – and the dog/ chook/ horse didn’t get into them! The Easter holidays are a chance to catch our breath (especially for the preppies and grade sevens) before launching into the rest of the year.
“Candice was always professional and probably one of the most responsive lawyers I have ever dealt with, which is amazing and just what I needed.”
There were some great community events and gatherings over the last few weeks.

When the community gets together... Great things happen!
Just Love Eumundi! So, just what is ECCO?
As a small village that is host to a significant number of community organisations, we are often asked just what specific role does ECCO play in Eumundi. ECCO (Eumundi di Combined Community Organisation Inc.) is a not-for not-for-profit company limited by guarantee and oper operates the markets carpark, the community magazine “The Green”, the local RV Stopover Stopover, the Community Bus and via our promotional and marketing brand “Experience Eumundi” promotes and underpins Eumundi as a place of great attractions to visitors - both via our world famous markets and also culture and arts for which Eumundi is renowned. The three members of ECCO are Eumundi Chamber of Commerce, Eumundi and District Community Association and Eumundi and District Historical Association, with constitutional objectives to: * Instigate projects that benefit Eumundi and its surrounds enhancing community spirit and enjoy ment, community amenities, community wellbeing and business and markets sustainability. * Promote and encourage tourism and business opportunities that enhance Eumundi and its surrounding areas. * Operate communal activities, incl. the markets car park, community bus, RV stopover facility and publish The Green community magazine for the general benefit of Eumundi and community. In addition to significant expenditure on projects and community amenities each year - incl. Eumundi Sculpture Prizes, the new rickety bridge at Caplick Park, signage and street beautification, Xmas in Eumundi undi ‘Lights Up’ and a significant contribution to the upcoming redevelopment of the Terraces, ECCO also distributes some $60K annually to carpark volunteer associations. A number of years ago ECCO also invested in the Eumundi medical centre when it was at risk of closing and ran this centre prior to selling to Ochre Health, securing a first class health facility right here in town. Our main income stream is from car parking on market days and as well as investing in the above projects and volunteer groups, any surplus enables us to subsidise the Community Bus and The Green. In short, ECCO recycles money brought into Eumundi via markets visitors and reinvests this into our wonderful town and community.
Late last year Council were required, due to its age and serviceability, to replace the old Eumundi Range Road Bridge. Given the historical significance of the wooden superstructure of the old bridge, Eumundi residents were concerned that the new bridge would not preserve any of its predecessor’s character and heritage. So, after community meetings with Crs Rogerson and Robinson , it was agreed that the bridge would include upgrades that not only feature a unique colour olour palette but also re-purpose -purpose some of the old timbers and stone in creating a rest area at the south end and beautiful new welcome sign at the northern approach.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT EUM UN DI AU TO M OTI V E SER V ICE CENTR E Brady and Sue Jansen What and where is your business? What do you offer? Our business is Eumundi Automotive Service Centre – we are located at Low St, Eumundi. We offer log book servicing, general mechanical repairs, tyres and batteries. We are also an approved inspection station for road worthy certificates. How long have you been in business? We have been in business for nine months now and are lucky to have our friend Shane Tomkins join us. Both Brady and Shane have years and years of experience and training in the motor vehicle industry and have worked as a great team before. We had intended to employ Shane at Eumundi Automotive, once this new business became busy enough. What made you choose Eumundi to base your business? We chose Eumundi because there was no one in the village servicing the Eumundi area’s automotive needs. We also live locally and our children – Grace and Sophie attend Eumundi State School. What is the best thing you’ve found about working here? The best thing about working in Eumundi is the people – they have been so supportive and friendly and we love the community spirit.
Locals are pleased to have the Belli Park Picnic Shop on 2-20 Browns Rd (off Eumundi Kennilworth Rd) open again for groceries and stock feed. Owner Ross Wilson said business is ticking over nicely and locals are beginning to return to the friendly spot. Ross offers breakfast, lunch and dinner from 8am to 7pm seven days a week - and word is the burgers are delicious! Local lady Margaret Long insisted, “The burgers are better at Belli!”

The local election held last Saturday 19 March has seen both Councillor Greg Rogerson returned to the position of Councillor for Division 10 and Steve Robinson claim victory in Division 9. Heritage E U M U N D I ’ S H E R I TA G E O P E N D AY Eumundi’s School of Arts hall recently hosted the Sunshine Coast Council’s Heritage Discovery Showcase, with 15 different heritage groups sharing their stories and pride of place with visitors. Discover Eumundi’s Heritage and Visitor Centre manager Wendy Birrell said the day was a great success. “The many heritage groups were kept busy all day sharing the information, stories, books and items they caretake for their communities on the Sunshine Coast.” Wendy added, “Butter making, string making from plant fibres [with local artist Anne Harris]
and miniature canoe making with Lyndon Davis from Gubbi Gubbi dance - who also gave a wonderful welcome to country - were particular favourites with the children.” The day was full of interest with: a jet fighter cockpit to explore, woodcarving demonstrations from the Cooroora Woodworkers; fashion parades featuring local models and dresses through the eras from Eumundi Vintage Clothing. There was also live entertainment from Eumundi’s DooWop Dolls who had a great swag of songs from the ‘40s and ‘50s.

Arts N E W L O O K F O U N D AT I O N The Foundation for Culture and Art, Eumundi was established by the Eumundi Historical Association to provide an opportunity for local residents and others to contribute to the social development of Eumundi through philanthropic and tax deductible financial support and through voluntary activities. It is managed by a Board of Directors which has recently undergone a period of change. As some of the original members of the Board have moved on a new team have been put in place. As part of a fresh look at the work of the Foundation, the members of the new Board want to work more closely with our cultural and artistic communities to develop activities that will be well supported by the public. Greater engagement and participation in cultural and artistic endeavours will make Eumundi an increasingly attractive place to live and work. This is a particular challenge, now recognised globally because of the impact of the 24/7 life that is increasingly encroaching on and, to a certain extent, replacing more traditional leisure and free time activities. Arts and culture have always had a special place in the social fabric. The Foundation recognises that it needs to respond to a broad community of aspirations. Eumundi is fortunate to be home to a very diverse
Michael Carney, Foundation Chair
population in its cultural and artisan pursuits. We are aiming to tap into these creative forces and work in ways that will support and engage our artisans. At the same time it will be just as important to take Eumundi’s gifts to the broader community. Here again we will be pitching activities to make a difference to the life of our community, and to bring a new dimension to Eumundi’s cultural and artistic reputation. As part of improving communications and networking, the Foundation will be upgrading its website and extending its presence on social media. As well, we want to expand personal interactions and will be developing activities that enable us to engage regularly with the Eumundi community. A particular achievement of the Foundation has been the Eumundi Sculpture Prize. The inaugural prize in 2014 was won by Sustainable, by Hew Chee Fong (below right) to celebrate Eumundi’s historic links to the timber industry. The 2015 prize winner Spirit Orb (above right) was conceived by Meg Geer and Richard Thompson to memorialise the twenty servicemen from Eumundi who lost their lives in the first World War. It is currently being fabricated by artisan blacksmiths near Nambour and is scheduled to be unveiled as part of Eumundi’s Anzac Day commemorations.

Warrior tells the story of Dundalli, an Aboriginal man born in the Blackall Range around 1820, a time when the lives of Aboriginal people across South East Queensland were being changed forever. This meticulously researched book describes how Aboriginal people across South East Queensland reacted to invasion, whether through attempts at accommodation, or through violent resistance. Connors places Aboriginal politics as the heart of this story, as groups argued for differing responses and the elders of the Bora council debated tactics to deal with changing circumstances.
Connor’s book makes us ask why not? Libby Connors is Senior Lecturer in history at the University of Southern Queensland and a long time environmental and social justice activist, most recently as a member of the Lock the Gate Alliance. She was our guest author at the March book club meeting at Berkelouw’s Bookstore. Judy Powell is a member of the Eumundi book club. She is a historian and archaeologist whose most recent book is a biography of the first person to teach archaeology at an Australian University (Love’s Obsession: the lives and archaeology of Jim and Eve Stewart. Wakefield Press. 2013)
Dundalli, renowned for his physical strength, played a key role in these events as negotiator, diplomat, and ultimately warrior.
AT COOROY LIBRARY • Wednesdays 1.30 - 3.00pm • 8 x 1½ hour lessons • $175 per term
For residents of the Sunshine Coast, few books could be more important than Libby Connor’s award winning Warrior: a legendary leader’s dramatic life and violent death on the colonial frontier which was Eumundi Book Club’s choice for March.

Kids E A S T E R B O N N E T PA R A D E The annual bonnet parade at Eumundi State School gives junior school students the chance to show off their creative flair to friends and family, have a good dance and celebrate Easter and the end of first term. After the guitar club serenaded the hall with Little Peter Rabbit, teachers danced their class around the packed hall, while parents captured their happy jumping kids on camera. The MC styling of Principal Mick Connors added to the fun.
BONNET MAKING Eumundi State School teacher Jess Constable and her grade two students transformed their classroom into a colourful bonnet making workshop recently in preparation for the school’s bonnet parade and Easter celebrations.

Most of the girls hadn’t played softball before, but were eager to improve their skills over a five week training session and three day carnival. We played against Nambour, Coastal, Glasshouse and Caboolture. Glasshouse smashed us but we kept up the team spirit with chants and war cries. We all enjoyed the experience and most of us are considering signing up for the next summer season. During the last day of the event, a lady named Carolyn Crudgington came up to the
Eumundi Girls, asking us if we wanted to see something from the Olympics. We excitedly said yes, and to our amazement she returned holding a Sydney Olympic torch as well as her bronze medal that she won in the 1996 Atlanta Olympic games (the first games that softball became an Olympic sport!) We felt honoured that we were able to meet
Carolyn and hold these Olympic mementos. Overall we had an awesome time and will look forward to the next season.

Outdoors GARDEN GROUP VISIT FEIJOA FA R M
WONDERFUL AUTUMN
The Cooroy Eumundi Garden Club recently visited the successful Hinterland Feijoa farm in Belli Park. Owners Peter Heineger (pictured talking to the group) and Sally Hookey gave an insightful tour and talk. The next garden club meeting will be held on Mon 11 April, 9.30am at the home of Dianne and Ian Mulhall in Cooroy. Patrick Handley of Waterscapes Australia will speak
about pond and water garden design. Contact Carol 0419 756819 for information.
R E V E G E TAT I O N F O R C O O L O O L A 300,000 trees will be planted in the Cooloola National Park as part of the Australian Government’s 20 Million Trees Program. Federal Member for Wide Bay Warren Truss said $1.056 million in federal funding would go to CO2 Australia to facilitate the planting. The revegetation will target a cleared area of 30 hectares within the Cooloola section of the subtropical Great Sandy National Park and will restore the lowland rainforest by planting native trees and shrubs. Mr Truss stated, “This initiative will also provide critical habitats for a variety of vulnerable, endangered and migratory species including the Koala, Grey-Headed Flying Fox and Satin Fly Catcher.” The project will target the protection of threatened plant species such as Keys Boronia and Bacon Wood.
Autumn is here and it’s going to be wonderful! It’s the perfect weather for getting back out into the garden after the summer’s intense heat. The nights will gradually become cooler. The rain may stick around for a while, but the intense humidity will disappear. There is something very rewarding about getting into the garden at this time of year. And it’s a bonus that you won’t be sweating like crazy!
T hings to do in the autumn garden • Now is the time to grow a lot of cool climate veggies like: tomatoes, peas, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, beetroot and potatoes. • It is also a good time to encourage beneficial insects - the “bennies” into the garden. Plant lots of flowers and let herbs go to flower.
Amber Grimley
GARDENING them out, stuff them with something yummy, sprinkle with cheese and bake in the oven - yummo! • Plant fruit trees. • Feed fruit trees. • Clean up the garden and make a compost heap don’t forget to use all those awesome autumn leaves. At the Yandina Community Gardens the volunteers are getting into the garden and cleaning it up, planting new plants and getting ready for the big Open Day in May. So save the date: Sunday May 15, 9am - 4pm. Jerry ColebyWilliams will be there, along with Elizabeth Fekonia, Anne Gibson (the Micro Gardener) and Morag Gamble. There will be many stalls, plants, food and music, plus things to entertain the kids.
• Harvesting: Any summer veggies that are still alive! Rosella, pumpkins, eggplants. Monster zucchinis lurking in the garden: Hollow
“It’s important that we reestablish green corridors and urban forests where the Wide Bay community can come together to appreciate Australia’s unique wildlife and the local environment,” Mr Truss said.

N atu re N otes WORKPLACE HAZARDS
In early February we had our local electrician Richard Merry here to install a new LED light and switch in the pantry. When Richie got up into the ceiling he found a medium sized snake curled up very close to where he wanted to work. After discussing what type of snake it was, Richie just got on with his work. Richie took a photo of the snake on his phone and we confirmed it was indeed a carpet snake. I can’t say they don’t bite as in fact I have been bitten on the hand before. Several years ago we had two large tree frogs living in a selfwatering pot on the front porch. These frogs make a ghastly and distressing sound when they are in trouble. I heard their cry coming from the porch so rushed outside to see what was happening. A medium sized carpet snake was partially inside the pot and without thinking and no time to get gardening gloves on, I firmly grabbed the snake and eased it out. Once the now angry front portion of the
Helen Hepburn
snake emerged, it very quickly whipped around and bit my hand. It was like a thousand needles biting down. After releasing the snake in the garden, I dabbed the bite with Betadine and though it was bruised and sore, it didn’t become infected. In Richie’s photo you can make out some small droppings. They look like rat droppings to me so I’m very happy to have the snake living in our ceiling to keep those pesky rodents under control. Recently I saw a carpet snake going back up into the roof area so I think the snake had come down for a drink after all the hot weather. These snakes usually do their travelling at night, so it’s best to take a torch with you whilst pottering outdoors during the evening. Electricity is one of the most dangerous of products yet sparkies work confidently with it all day, so it strikes me as ironic that a medium sized snake might make an electrician look sideways.

GET THE MESSAGE The EDV Group and the Greens Party went to the Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale, Weyba Downs and Peregian Springs constituents and again pitched their long running campaign for “Boundary Change” to the local community from the platform of
the recent Council Elections. Overall SCC Election results indicate Cr Steve Robinson, Cr Greg Rogerson, and Mayor Jamieson are returned - with a clear mandate from the local and greater Sunshine Coast communities that the majority did not want the proposed boundary change and wished to remain part of the Sunshine Coast Council communities. In the last Council, all twelve Councillors voted unanimously against the boundary proposal, and it would appear they have all been returned as Councillors for another term (with the Deputy Mayor retiring). Consecutive Local Government Ministers from the Liberal and Labor Governments also ruled out any boundary change. The Sunshine Coast Council has governed this region for many generations and is part of our heritage, our culture and our future. Our prosperity is in good hands with the Council Elect - they are strong, have good vision, and most importantly have integrity well above any alternative. I would hope that with this Election result the EDV Group have received the clear message that the greater community do not want any further divisiveness and are not interested in being controlled by or part of the EDV / Noosa Parks Association / NBRF agendas! Steve Bennett, Verrierdale
