Notes Editor’s note ... I love finding cover photographs for the Green. Like this issue’s beautiful shot by Yenny who photographed Cathy and Carlos for her photographic exhibition, Everyday Light Warriors (currently on at ‘The J’ in Noosa). I also love looking at a series of issues lined up on my noticeboard. They’re like a photographic exhibition in themselves. And with a series of covers you get a fuller picture of us hinterlanders and our endeavours – have a look on www.issuu.com/ eumundigreen, and you’ll see what I mean... It’s also a real opportunity to give some remarkable locals their moment in the spotlight – show off the talents and those of our incredible volunteer photographers. I’m so lucky they’re willing to share their beautiful photos with me and Green readers. We have a new photo assignment for spring (page 8) to inspire more of you!

Business ROUNDABOUT KEY TO GREENLIGHT

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT DAV ID BURNS RE A L E S TAT E

David Burns, owner

What and where is your business? What do you offer? David Berns Real Estate is a home-based, boutique agency focused on a unique customer experience, servicing vendors in the Noosa hinterland. How long have you been in the business? I have over 16 years specialising in the Noosa Hinterland property market and during that time I have forged excellent client relationships and record sales. Over one year ago I launched independently as a stand-alone agency and haven’t looked back. We also extended our team earlier this year with Heidi Woodman, sales consultant, joining us. We are a small team that prides itself on personalised service. What is the best thing about working there? Creating a business culture that is about client satisfaction. Being a smaller, independent operator means I can focus on each clients’ needs and achieve their results. What is the worst thing about working there? I have to say there is not much that I hate about working in the real estate industry but if I was going to say one thing it would be the two hours I spend early each Saturday morning putting the open for inspection signs out. It is one of those necessary chores that need to be done before a big day of inspections.

Louise Formosa, Project Manager, for Our Village Eumundi, and State Member for Noosa Glen Elmes recently met with the Police Minister’s senior staff at Parliament House in Brisbane in an attempt to highlight what they believe to be an urgent need for the Napier Rd/Cook St and Caplick Way intersection in Eumundi to be upgraded with a roundabout. Ms Formosa, who is managing the ‘Top of Town’ development, hopes to see the upgrade approved ASAP. Currently the Formosa family, who bought the parcel of derelict land in 2015, are unable to confirm their development intent for the Memorial Dr/ Butter Factory site until significant hurdles such as the intersection upgrade are resolved. Ms Formosa explained, “The bottom line is that if the right balance cannot be achieved, the site will remain ‘as is’ for years to come - which would be devastating for us as well as the community at large.” Ms Formosa’s research into Council records shows that since 2004 the community has supported the Napier Rd/Cook St and Caplick Way intersection being upgraded to a roundabout due to a number of safety concerns. She said Eumundi State School and the P&C have consistently supported the upgrade as well to improve safety for parents and children. “Council indicated to the previous developer of the ‘top end of town’, as well as to us,

What would you like to see change in the business districts in the region? The Doonan and Eumundi area is a unique region and I would like to see more of a retail mix incorporating services such as a regional bank branch and supermarket. I would also like to see more business opportunity opening up along the EumundiNoosa Rd.

Community P E N GAR I COMMUN I TY FESTI VA L

Penny Kennedy, festival manager

There was a relaxed and joyful energy at this year’s Noosa Pengari Steiner School’s Festival in Doonan. We had a couple of thousand people through the gate and children of all ages were painting skateboards, making nests and garlands, or adventuring to new heights with the rock climbing wall and bubble soccer. The healthy nourishing food and entertainment satisfied all appetites. The chilled out crowd enjoyed music played by: Pengari students, Noosa Battle of the Bands winner Flintlock, and X Factor’s Jimmy Davis. The finale of Come Together with Darren Percival and Mark Maroney was a special moment as the community connected through song. Our grade two class had so much fun they have presented us with pictures of the best thing about our Festival! It was truly a time for: community, connection and cooperation at Pengari - meaning “Place of the Soul.”

Community Cont’d from pg 5. they would prefer a roundabout to any alternative traffic solution for access to and from the site,” Ms Formosa shared. “To design and build a roundabout, and one that is of sufficient size to turn school buses, requires a fair and equitable balance of cooperation and support from the developer, State government, local government as well as the local community. Cr Rogerson has certainly shown us his support,” Ms Formosa explained. Ms Formosa said she recently approached Glen Elmes to help

determine State government support and said discussions have been very positive. Mr Elmes concurred and said, “It is imperative a roundabout is built to address serious safety concerns at the Eumundi State School and the Kindergarten, which will strengthen the case for the development application that I strongly support.”

LOCAL BUSHDANCE

“Now we’re finalising our development application for detailed consideration by Council and our community hopefully, with Glen’s help we can turn our dreams for the site, into reality,” Ms Formosa enthused.

Council meetings Ordinary Meeting 9am 15 September, Caloundra

Although everyone else seems to have read them, I’ve only just finished Elena Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels: My Brilliant Friend, The Story of a New Name (2013), Those Who Leave And Those Who Stay (2014), and The Story of the Lost Child (2015) which is shortlisted for the 2016 Man Booker International Prize. Intriguingly, Ferrante is a pseudonym for a closely kept identity who some suspect is the basis for Elena, one of the main characters in the series. I’m not really interested in who she (absolutely female!) is. I agree with the author who said in an interview, “Books, once they are written, have no need of their authors.” Authors can tell us fascinating things about themselves and about the art of writing, but their books belong to us, the readers. What does interest me are these two remarkable female characters, Lila and Elena, and their friendship over a lifetime, beginning in postwar Naples in an impoverished, male-dominated and brutal district with a very long and violent history and their attempts to free themselves from it, taking advantage of opportunities brought on by the end of the war. At first, I found the language and setting alienating, but the intensity and authenticity of their relationship drew me in. Most women I know can remember those complex and intense childhood friendships. As another favourite author, Eudora Welty, has said, “Friendship is inherently a magnet. As with its own drawing power, it locates and draws to the surface, spreads before our eyes poems, stories, essays, letters, in the widest variety.”

It is especially gratifying to see two female characters who, from an early age, challenge and compete with each other with ideas and creativity and not just the stereotypical concerns of appearance and acquisition. The first book is called My Brilliant Friend - by the end of the series it’s hard to know just which of them that is.

Kids DRAGONS FINAL

ROCK FINALISTS ANNOUNCED

Doug Toms, Eumundi Dragons Junior Rugby Club Coach

Katie Noonan, rock mumma

The Eumundi Dragons have finished off a fantastic season with a couple of highlights. On 3 September the club played host to approximately 70 players and 100 supporters from six local teams in Sunshine Coast Under eight and Under 12 age divisions. The day also included: ball shuttle relays, goal kicking comps and tug o’ wars. On 10 September, the club held its eighth end of season presentation day, as well as

the AGM where the new office bearers were elected. This year’s club sponsors were thanked - without their financial contributions the young club would find it very hard to exist, let alone develop. Special mention to: Bendigo Bank, Sunshine Coast Council, Kombi Shop, Richie’s Bakery, Coast to Country Mobile Sawmilling, Clean Slate Excavations and Eumundi Meats. A BBQ lunch preceded the annual kids vs adults Walla rugby match.

Last week I was thrilled to announce the 19 scholarship winners of the inaugural Eumundi School of Rock! It’s an initiative I dreamt up to enable rad, Aussie music to enrich the lives of the young rockers in our area: kids living in or schooling in the 4562 - 4561 area, grades three to eight. These kids will get 12 weeks free tuition and then get to rock out the last day of school on 9 Dec at a big community concert at Eumundi School of Arts with the amazing Jack Carty, Band of Frequencies and myself! Fully pro backline that I bought with the proceeds from my previous community concert are thanks to Yamaha Music Australia Music Products. Some kids will also receive end of term prizes care of Yamaha too! To top it off they’ll be dressed to rock by local designers Kobomo! Thank you so much to my incredible (unpaid) support team: Anthony from Experience Eumundi and two of my besties Analiese Long and Lani Kenzler. Our awesome teachers are: Darren Percival (vocals); Band of Frequencies members Shannon Sol Carroll (keys), OJ Newcomb (guitar), and Andrew Szumowski (bass and trumpet); Alice Jones (drums), my awesome hubby Zac Hurren (sax) and Analiese Long for stagecraft tuition.

P R A C T I C E PAY S O F F Good Shepherd Lutheran College (GSLC) student Shania Oreb was recently accepted into the Queensland State Honours Ensemble Program (SHEP) for violin. This is an amazing coup for the Verrierdale 14 year-old as SHEP receives over 2000 nominations each year. Shania, who started studying violin in Year four, said, “I am really looking

forward to the experience, and I am most excited about representing my school at the Grand Finale Concert.” Shania spends most of her spare time playing in groups that include; the GSLC Senior Quartet and Orchestra, the Noosa Orchestra, and is planning to audition for the Qld Youth Orchestra in October. GLSC Senior Strings teacher Antoni Bonetti shared, “Taking first place as Junior Solo Strings Champion at the recent Coast Eisteddfod and also a first in the Baroque, Shania consolidated her achievements with two seconds, two thirds and a Highly Commended in her other performance items.” 10

Health W H AT I S C L E A N E AT I N G ? Diet …food … eating plan … cut this out … eat this … don’t eat that … Oh my, what do I eat? It’s a very confusing world out there as far as food and dieting is concerned. Sometimes you get stuck in a rut eating food on the run or that is easy to grab from the bakery or shop. Sometimes you feel shopping for easy to prepare meals and packet food is easier than starting from scratch. But diet is 80% of the deal when trying to lose weight and 20% is exercise. You can’t out exercise a bad diet. For example, a 2km fast walk burns around 125 calories - that’s about 4 strawberries. A meat pie has about 715 calories so you need to walk over 10kms to just burn off the pie alone. So you can see how important diet is. It also shows how an inactive lifestyle can creep on the kilos over a year. The aim is to eat clean - no processed food. Try to eliminate the amount of sugar consumed,

Anthea Wood, Personal trainer

be aware of what is actually in the food you eat. Eat protein each meal and good fats daily. Read labels carefully! There are about four grams in a teaspoon of sugar, so if a yoghurt has 8 grams of sugar that is 2 teaspoons! Be aware of your water intake; it is very important for weight loss for you to be hydrated.

• Never forget to eat • Write down what you eat.

Success commandments • Stay strong • Stay focused • Have a positive attitude • Drink lots of water

Really, these are just a few ideas to get you started. Spring is about making a fresh start. Eat clean and enjoy a fresh start for spring.

• I understand my body will not always play by the rules

Preparation is the key to success

• Always have a snack with you (Nuts or protein bar)

• Don’t give in to temptation • I do what needs to be done even if I don’t feel like it

• Make your lunch the night before or know what you are going to have.

• Remember why you are on this journey

• Spend one day of the week planning and meal prepping.

• There is always someone worse off than me

• Get up earlier to make breakfast

• I do not give up

• Get nuts ready into snack sizes, boil some eggs and cut up veggie sticks.

• I will have bad days

Health AY U R V E D A - I N S E A R C H O F T H E S C I E N C E O F L I F E “The science of life shall never attain finality, therefore humility and relentless industry should characterise your every endeavour and your approach to knowledge.” Caraka muni Ayurveda is not a tiny item. It is the “Science of Life” and encompasses all life - including the body, mind and soul. Atma (or Ātman) is Sanskrit (sacred language of Hinduism) for body, mind and soul - or the complete package. The idea is that the science of Ayurveda - pure and pristine in its philosophical glory - can

flow through you according to time, place, circumstance, need and individual. Ayurveda is the science of the self, or the search for the root of all existence. That is a basic difference between Ayurveda and Naturopathy. Both health sciences have many branches of knowledge, anatomy and physiology,

Jay Mulder, Eumundi Medicine man

codes and ethics, but the major difference ultimately is that Ayurveda has a science of Atma and is the health system of those who are searching

for the root of all existence - Atma and Paramātmā (or Paramatman), which is the supreme soul or spirit. Cont’d on pg 18.

Caraka (Charaka) muni (holy man) was one of the key contributors to Ayurveda, a system of medicine and lifestyle developed in Ancient India. He’s known for writing the medical treatise, Charaka Samhita and is referred to as the “father of medicine”. Caraka teaches that health and disease are not predetermined and life may be prolonged through attention to lifestyle. The Ayurvedic system believes that prevention has a more prominent place than treatment; including restructuring lifestyle to align with the course of nature and four seasons, which will lead to complete wellness.

The Eumundi Medicine Man, Jay Mulder, is a nutritionist and accredited Ayurvedic practitioner, with more than 20 years of experience consulting, importing and making his own range of herbal medicine. Jay enjoys sharing his knowledge and wisdom with his staff and students. You will find Jay on the Top Terrace at the Original Eumundi Markets every Saturday for Ayurvedic herbal consultations, herbal medicines and organic staples. As part of Wellness Month at Eumundi Markets, Jay will be presenting at 9.30am on Saturday 24 September - sharing how traditional Ayurvedic Lifestyle cooking is all about meeting the seasons with your personal dosha. He’ll demonstrate how to create delicious simple foods at home for your ultimate wellness and optimal health.

Simple & delicious Brownies

Valda Andrews

As I get older I find I like to simplify everything, hence, easy recipes that taste good and do not take any time to prepare. This recipe was used for a friend’s 80th birthday cake with that many brownies piled high with a candle on top ... enough for everyone who celebrated with him. The beauty of this recipe is that it is made in a large saucepan. Ingredients • 200 g butter

Over 50 years ago I graduated as a Home Science Teacher and taught for a few years before marrying. We then went travelling overseas where I taught at Nauru Island and London. Returning to Australia, I then became the Home Economist for the Queensland Butter Board, giving cookery classes, judging bake-offs, recipe testing and writing. I have always been passionate about food and have been known to have recipe books on my bedside table. I find now that I like to make some of the “old” recipes that have been tried and tested over many years.

Add salt, sugar and vanilla and stir well.

• 1/4 tsp salt

Take off the heat, sift in flour and stir.

• 1/2 cup cocoa

Add eggs and beat well.

• 2 cups brown sugar

Add walnuts.

• 1 tsp vanilla

Spread into a 30 x 18 cm slab tin and bake in a moderate oven for 20 to 25 mins.

• 2 eggs • 1 cup plain flour • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts Method Melt butter with cocoa in large pan but do not boil.

When cool, ice with chocolate icing or be decadent and spread with melted chocolate. Sprinkle with extra chopped walnuts. ENJOY the calories! Eat the lot!

Living HINTERLAND PROPERTIES PUT TO WORK With spectacular views to the coastline in Doonan, walking to the markets in Eumundi, beautiful bushland in Verrierdale and rolling green hills of Eerwah Vale, North Arm and Belli Park, it’s little wonder people want to come here – then stay! Visit Sunshine Coast tourism puts the huge appeal down to, “the hinterland experience — much of it encompassing sweeping

country views or rainforest settings that are in close proximity to pretty hinterland villages, but still only about 30 minutes from the beach.” Cathy (pictured on the cover) has created her own hinterland hideaway in the rainforest of Eerwah Vale and rents out the Eco-friendly Cabana cabin (on glampinghub.com) to people looking to escape modern

day trappings and immerse themselves in the countryside. Cathy shared, “The cabin has become a special place...It has been used for photo shoots and over the last year it has been enjoyed by many people who rent it from us for their private getaway.” With romantic scenery everywhere you look, the option of markets, bushwalks or

beaches by day and a country fire by night, the Eumundi hinterland region has big appeal nationally and internationally. And Queensland features twice on Airbnb’s ’Top 10 Paradise Now’ destinations for visitors. So it makes sense to many of our locals to put their piece of property paradise to work for them. We meet some locals who’ve done just that.

What prompted you to run a B&B? We come from accounting/banking backgrounds and decided it was time to try something different that would allow us to spend more time together as a family and enjoy life a bit more! Marko has always enjoyed cooking, gardening and maintenance, I grew up in a family that was always having multiple family members coming and staying with us from the UK, and ultimately we both really enjoy meeting new people.

What prompted you to offer a homestay? I love to travel and have often used B&B’s so I can appreciate how nice it is to find somewhere to stay that’s affordable and has a homely feel. It’s great being able to open up a portion of the house to guests who can relax in their private space or share their stories over a cuppa, or glass of wine.

Where did you move from? We moved from the inner west of Sydney which was growing at an enormous pace and suddenly felt very crowded and congested, and having family living on the Sunshine Coast we decided to take a leap and join them! What sort of people are coming to stay? We have all sorts: young couples for romantic getaways, older couples having time away from children, groups celebrating birthdays, or family attending weddings. Many are here to experience the Spirit House Restaurant or their cooking school, and of course the majority of visitors whether local, interstate or international, are here to visit the markets! Do you enjoy it? It’s a very flexible way of life that allows us both to attend our daughter’s school functions, spend time together, and meet lovely and interesting people from all over the world!

Are you a long time local? I have lived on the Sunshine Coast for over 30 years mostly on the Coast, however made the green change several years ago to this delightful village, Eumundi. What sort of people are coming to stay? People from all walks of life and all over the world. From Singapore to Mullimbimby! Sometimes even locals who simply wish to let their hair down and stay in town overnight. Why do they come to Eumundi? Anything from family gatherings to special events: Boho weddings, of course the usual hinterland market visit, dining out in town or just passing through.

Living P R E PA R I N G O U R WA R D R O B E S F O R S P R I N G ! Adrienne Parker, fashion designer It’s that time of the year to take a look at what’s in your wardrobe and get ready for spring! The easiest way to sort is firstly by taking out all thicker, heavier fabrics and vacuum pack them away as you won’t need them for a while! With what’s left, identify the clothes you know you feel good in. Have a good look at your favourites and see what’s missing for your spring collection. If there’s anything in your wardrobe that makes you feel negative when you look it … just get rid of it! Some basics: Layering lighter weight fabrics works well in this transitionary period. A light weight cut jacket or coat can be taken off during the day or added in the evening. Light weight scarves are great to add colour and also add dimension as well as giving both our complexion and outfit a lift! Pants – whether 3/4, 7/8 or full length with a comfortable waist band are an excellent part of a basic wardrobe. What’s in: Dresses are hitting the catwalks straight away this spring which is such a blessing for a smart, cool and comfortable look. Many designers, like me, focus on A line dress designs that show off our best body features whilst

Eumundi Square fashion designer Adrienne Parker hiding our worst. These styles also help to give more airflow to our bodies. Natural fibres are important for our wellbeing in the warmer months. If your garment is made from rayon or linen, have a cotton slip ready as part of your basic wardrobe. My best advice is not to over pack your wardrobe. A few good, basic well cut designs complimented by new season tops, scarves and dresses … Eumundi Square is running style workshops every Friday. Everyone is welcome to head along and learn about how they can look great this spring!

habitat but also a food source such as the chewing of the base of Lomandra and also the seed heads. It is now spring which also brings with it lots of nest building and breeding for many wildlife species. Preserving and providing our beautiful and unique Australian wildlife with a healthy habitat is a great start and one that can begin locally. Definitely a time of year to watch out for wildlife while driving especially at dawn, dusk and into the night.

I find a really rewarding aspect of bush regeneration is discovering the traces that wildlife leave behind - telling a story about what species inhabit an area of bushland. It may be their scats, a burrow or flattened grass from where the mob of Kangaroos slept or the exciting discovery of scratch marks up a tree. Check out this photo of just one of many tunnel runways made by native rodents. Native grasses and sedges not only provide

Volunteering with the Eumundi bushcare group is an excellent way to gain native plant knowledge, weed identification and experience. If you or anyone you know has an interest in conservation, or just want to have a lovely morning out with nature and other like-minded locals, please come along! The next Eumundi Bushcare group working bee will be held at the Eumundi Sunken Gardens Pacey St on Sun 25 Sept, 9.30am to 12pm, with a light morning tea supplied. FB: Eumundi Bushcare Group

Bushfire risk management is a whole community activity. You might have your property well prepared, only to be put at risk by your neighbours. And... if there are no volunteer firefighters to show up well… According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Queensland has just had its second wettest winter on record - but remember that rain might be making more fuel for fires for when we do have a dry spell. So you could please do us, your community and yourself a favour by having a look at the following resources:

adds to overall risk.

• The Rural Fire Service: ‘Prepare.Act. Survive.’ campaign. Get loads of info on how to prepare a bushfire survival plan. ruralfire.qld.gov.au.

• Get in touch with the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade. Use us as a resource and see how we might be able to help. 5442 7900 or eumundi.rfb@gmail.com

• Google search: Overall fuel hazard assessment guide. It will take you to a download link for a PDF of that name. This is the doc used by firefighters to help us think about how fire behaves. It is a bit specialised, but it will help you understand how the bushfire fuel on your property

• Have a look on Youtube for the CFA video called When the Fires Come. It is an account by survivors of the 2009 Victorian fires. It’s extreme, but provides an interesting perspective on decisions you’d have to make if a fire threatened your home.

Also please consider volunteering with us – or one of the other local brigades. The Eumundi brigade has spent the last couple of years rebuilding our volunteer base. We’re trucking along quite well but could always use more help (nudge, nudge).

N atu re N otes BLACK OR BROWN SNAKES With spring bringing warm days, snakes (and lizards) will be on the move. They come out of brumation - the reptilian version of hibernation. Brumation is the state in which reptiles reduce activity but don’t go into a full torpor as hibernating mammals do. Rather, they enter a state of dormancy, waiting to seize opportunities offered by days warm enough to raise their body temperature. We often get contacted when someone comes across a large brown snake and invariably identifies it as either a Coastal Taipan or a King Brown Snake but in almost all cases that ID is incorrect. Full-grown Taipans, Oxyuranus scutellatus certainly are a large snake, up to 2.5 metres long, generally slender in girth. The Coast is part of their distribution range but they are not commonly encountered. The snakes avoid people but are fiercely aggressive when cornered. The Eastern Brown Snake, Pseudonaja textilis, also a large species, is much more common and therefore more frequently seen. They also become very aggressive in selfdefence. Both these snakes are in the family Elapidae: the front-fanged, venomous group. Difficulty in identification is understandable: both species are large and swift, of slender body with brown colour. They have an overlapping distribution range: Taipans are found down the East Coast from the Cape to northern NSW; the Eastern Brown Snake ranges over close to half of the eastern part of Australia. They also share a habitat which includes wet and dry forests, grasslands, cane fields and areas around habitation where they hunt rats, mice and other mammals which make up the bulk of their diet. Most importantly, both species are highly venomous and dangerous. The venom of both contains powerful neurotoxins (causing paralysis) and anticoagulants but have other different components requiring a specific antivenin (or antivenom) in case of human envenomation. The case for calling large brown

Kon Hepers

snakes seen in this area King Brown Snakes is very clearly wrong. The correct name for the King Brown is Mulga Snake, Pseudechis australis, and while distribution is over almost all of Australia, the exclusion is South East Queensland and the very southern margin of the mainland. This species is definitely not found on the Sunshine Coast. Its preferred habitat is the drier inland especially the Mulga country. This species also grows to over two metres in length but has a large girth. The one we photographed outside Darwin was at least as thick as my arm and not very brown - common in northern specimens. The main diet of these snakes is other snakes, even quite large ones. Presumably the common name King Brown Snake is based on colour and size. This erroneous name has caused problems with treatment of snakebite. The species is actually a Black Snake, genus Pseudechis (meaning false viper), closely related to the Red-bellied Black Snake. Its venom is quite different from that of the species above. Main components are anticoagulants (prevent blood clotting) and myotoxins; which destroy muscle tissue. Therefore, the antivenin developed for Brown Snakes is hardly effective and a specific Black Snake version is required. The venom is considered not as virulent as that of the Brown Snakes but because of the size of these reptiles the amount of venom injected in a strike is larger than for any other elapids, and thus very dangerous.

Cranky Eastern Brown snake

Coastal Taipan. Photo:sunshinecoastsnakecatchers24-7.com.au

Note: a general antivenin has been developed and is the preferred treatment. Definite identification of these and all other snakes cannot be done “on the run but requires close examination of morphology such as scale count in rows across the body, pattern of head scales, under-tail scales single or divided, head shape and to some degree, colour. It must be left to the experts. Please treat all snakes as dangerous and remember they are protected by law. Mulga snake 17

Letters Cont’d from pg 12. Ayurveda is the idea of a dynamic continuum of knowledge, of “all knowledge”, ever evolving in wisdom - beyond the square box. To protect Ayurveda from wrangling or fallacies, the foundation of Ayurvedic science is fixed in the padartha vijnana (philosophical concepts of Ayurveda), yet the application is adaptable and ever changing with the passing ages. Ayurveda is ready to transform, find a specialty, that unique difference (visesa) which evolves during the course of time. Yet the philosophy is the same and the truths of life are inseparable. Learned teachers explain that the Vedic way of knowledge is descending whereas the Western idea is ascending.

Ayurveda students take the descending path and not only observe, dissect and experiment but receive knowledge from the teachers or Vedic authorities. Because the science of life is always adapting within the movements of time, Caraka muni has stated, ‘”Ayurveda will not reach finality.” This means Ayurveda is dynamic and for students or advanced students (teachers) it is a very exciting realisation. To be part of that evolution, adaption and discovery would inspire any explorer! Ayurveda is not a painting by numbers system.
