Notes Editor’s note ... Hinterlanders are definitely tree people! We love our views of the lush green hills and winding streams, have a tendency to be tree huggers, and have a love for natural materials - especially wood. This issue we meet some of our long term, creative locals whose love of working with wood has become their lifelong passion. David crafts furniture (page 5); Shane carves habitat sculptures (page 9) and Tom sculpts surfboards (Hinterland supplement page 6). Plus there’s something special about retreating back to the shade of the trees after a day at the beach - we truly have the best of both worlds.

We are organising a Sunshine Coast Regional Skateboarding Competition. Now that this sport is included in the Olympics, we hope this competition will encourage our talented kids to get on board and polish their skills leading up to the events on the Coast. Maybe we could discover an Olympic team member in our midst?

Pride of work - pride of Eumundi.

At the Rotary Pride of Work event last week at Joe’s Waterhole, we witnessed Eumundi comunity pride writ large. Not only did we celebrate excellence in service and endeavour across a number of areas of community engagement - but it was wonderful to see key community groups join together in fellowship. As well as the evening’s host Rotary, Country Women’s Association, Eumundi Historic Association, Eumundi District Community Association, Eumundi Chamber of Commerce and Experience Eumundi were proud sponsors of the awards. Cr. Greg Rogerson was also in attendance and applauded the unique qualities of pride and spirit that make Eumundi such a great place. Great things happen when we work and play together!

In 2017, Eumundi has been chosen to be the Sunny Coast’s host for the 10 year celebration of Earth Hour and its 10 years of progress in creating climate change awareness and action. We’ll have music, games, street food, green art, fun, lantern parade, outdoor movie, photography and more! Save the Date - March 25

Shane Christensen, Eumundi About 10 years ago, when I lived on Sunrise Rd in Eumundi, I caught what I thought was a mouse, but on closer inspection it turned out to be a cute, little feather tailed glider. I investigated the area and found that there was a family of feather tailed gliders and micro bats living around my compost toilet, catching insects at night time. After a little research, I discovered these native animals are beneficial around the house, and worth encouraging, as they eat termites and insects that are active during the night. I decided to make nesting areas and hollows around my house and garden, to encourage the insectivores to take up residence close to the house - but also to discourage them from nesting in the house.

Peter Zarb, Shihan (Master), Eumundi

Most kids I grew up with put on footy boots - I took my shoes off. They’d kick soccer balls - while I kicked pads. Week in and out, those kids would train on fields, courts and ovals while - you’d find me in dojo practicing kata (forms). My father was Sensei, a senior student and good friend of renowned international karate master, Kyoshi James Sumarac (7th Dan). Master James Sumarac is synonymous with authentic karate in Australia. He trained in Japan under karate legends as a young man, and has produced many talented karate enthusiasts over his 45 years of teaching around the globe. James is a person I greatly admired as a child - a true master of the arts - and today, he is my greatest mentor and friend. My father (5th Dan), my uncle (4th Dan) and all their senior students encouraged me as a boy, inspired me as a teen, and guided me as a man. What captured me about them all was how highly trained, unassuming, accommodating and friendly they all were. My ambition, was to be every bit the thinking, gentleman warriors they all were. Karate training early, taught me respect, discipline, perseverance and eventually peace. It also gave me a great appreciation for all combat arts. I participated in (and won) many tournaments on a national level, though in my teens was drawn toward the budo, the way of the warrior, rather than competitions. Nearly 30 years on, and I still train under Kyoshi James. Like my father then, I am now a senior member of this international organisation, a 5th Degree Black Belt Shihan, and travel nationally and internationally to teach and learn.

Classes include: meditative breathing exercises (to calm the mind, increase respiratory function and awareness, and cultivate positive energy); combat art-orientated aerobic drills (to increase flexibility, condition muscular strength and endurance, correct postural deficiencies and improve our cardiovascular system); and paired/group activities that promote trust, respect and positive social behaviour. After a while, these training techniques become a part of life, and you learn to use them throughout your day. A famous Samurai once said, “The true science of martial arts means practicing them in such a way that they will be useful at any time, and to teach them in such a way that they will be useful in all things”. Teaching has always given me great pleasure. I remember running around the dojo as a kid and having a blast. I remember training as a teenager and being given good advice and a channel to outlet my feelings. Training as a man has shaped me into the good community member and father I am today. Our dojo is open to all people of all ages. Shihan (master) Peter Zarb is a 5th Degree Black Belt. Karate classes for personal development and selfdefence for children and adults are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays: Kinder karate and junior karate at the Eumundi CWA hall, and senior karate at the Amphitheatre. facebook.com/kakurinkankarateqld

After a decade and a half of teaching many successful dojos in Victoria, my young family and I moved to this beautiful town of Eumundi. Our community karate club teaches Goju Kensha Karate Do, the school of the hard and soft fist, which was established in Australia over 45 years ago. Goju kensha has roots in China, it’s trunk in Okinawa and it’s branches shoot out from japan. This is the first time it has been shared in the State of Queensland. It’s a system that takes a holistic approach in its instruction, offering a healthy blend of fitness, fun and empowerment for the whole family. Karate classes are taught in a disciplined and supervised environment. Like my Sensei, I teach with an emphasis on selfdevelopment and self-defence rather than competition.

Health W H AT I S PA L L I AT I V E C A R E ?

Tania Watson, Eumundi Pharmacist

It is probably not a subject that many of us want to think about, let alone read about, however, I think it is an extremely important topic and one that we should all at some stage sit back and discuss with our families and loved ones. Palliative care is a very important field, but poorly understood — while it includes, (it is not limited to) end of life care. It is not limited to hospices or hospitals. It’s simply about comfort and living well at any stage. The World Health Organisation (WHO) defines palliative care as: “an approach that improves the quality of life of patients and their families facing the problems associated with lifethreatening illness, through the prevention and relief of suffering by means of early identification and impeccable assessment and treatment of pain and other problems, physical, psychosocial and spiritual”.

Palliative care: • Provides relief from pain and other distressing symptoms • Affirms life and regards dying as a normal process • Intends neither to hasten or postpone death • Integrates the psychological

and spiritual aspects of patient care • Offers a support system to help patients live as actively as possible until death • Offers a support system to help the family cope during the patients illness and in their own bereavement • Uses a team approach to address the needs of patients and their families, including bereavement counselling • Will enhance quality of life, and may also positively influence the course of illness For most people, the scariest thing isn’t death; it’s dying and suffering. We know, from research that what is most important to people who are

closer to death is comfort; feeling unburdened and unburdening to those they love; existential peace; and a sense of wonderment and spirituality. Around the world, countries are facing a growing ageing population, leading to increasing demands on health care systems. This single demographic change, coupled as it is with increases in longevity and longer periods of failing health, will put heightened pressure on palliative care services in the future (Economist Intelligence Unit, 2015). Evidence from the Grattan Institute also shows that up to 70 per cent of Australians want to die in their own home and in fact only 14 per cent do. In light of this, the EIU states that for wealthy nations, a shift in culture is needed to focus more on managing long-term illness in palliative care, rather than on curing illness. This will require a change in health investment and planning as

the traditional model of acute hospital care will need to be augmented by different service environments, including home-based care, respite and short stay care, nursing home care, and hospice care. Under the current system, the Commonwealth provides funding to the states and territories for the provision of palliative care, while the states and territories take responsibility for the delivery of palliative care. Our expectations around how we should be treated or cared for at this juncture of our lives is worthy of consideration. We seem to plan for all other aspects of our lives, yet it seems that the final stage is often forgotten or dismissed as a taboo topic. Palliative care experts like Dr. B. J. Miller, refer to it as ‘redesigning death’, however, whatever we choose to call it, a shift in culture to home based or hospice based care will require greater planning and investment into the future.

Health OUT OF THE COMFORT ZONE

Samantha Williams, personal trainer, Eumundi

A team of nine from Eumundi have decided to give up their time and train for one of the most challenging team events around. For the next 15 weeks this incredible team of men and women will be training for the Sunshine Coast Tough Mudder held at Woodford 20 May. The team decided to support Wendy Walker in her efforts to fundraise for the Children’s Tumour Foundation of Australia to help conquer Neurofibromatosis (NF). Treatments are few and there is no cure. This genetic disorder affects around one in 3000 people. NF1 is a variable disorder which can affect the skin, eyes and nerves. This can then cover the body in tumours in varying sizes from head to toe. This foundation is dear to Wendy’s heart, as both her grandson Steven and his mother Lyn, suffer from this condition. Lyn is unsure how this is going to affect her little boy Steven in the future. He already has optic gliomas behind his right eye. The funds raised will be used to further world class research conducted at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead to find a cure and improve treatments. As the team’s leader and a mum

myself, once I had heard about Steven and Lyn’s story I could not help but turn our team’s efforts toward fundraising for this mysterious disease. As a team we hope to raise $1000 for this condition over the next 15 weeks. The team and I train once a week, as well as hold exercise sessions individually and in groups during the week. The team consists of members from all walks of life and varying fitness levels. But what we all share in common is the drive to improve our health, our fitness, and our overall well-being. Training as a team is both fun, motivating and maybe a little bit competitive!

both physically and mentally.

comfort zone.

As a trainer since 2004, I myself started out small, competing in my first ever triathlon in 2002: I was hooked. Since then I have always loved a challenge and been willing to give anything a go. I have learnt through years of triathlons, road cycling and even a body building competition that all that matters is that we give 100 per cent, the journey is our success and the reward is the absolute satisfaction and feeling of achievement when you have completed something you never thought possible. This is what it means to get out of our

As a mum of two, I know how hard it is to find time to dedicate to yourself for exercise. But regardless we must find the time. Without our own health and well-being, we have nothing to give to our families. Many of our team members are mums who are also working to carve out this time, and strive to be wonderful role models for their children. I am so proud and inspired by my own team and super excited to do this fantastic challenge in May. eumundiaquaticcentre.com.au

My passion in life and absolute joy is to see others gain fitness, wellbeing and health like they never thought possible. To do this we must venture “out of our comfort zone”. This is so individual for everyone but so important in making changes for the better

Babette Urban, Eumundi

There’s nothing like some cool memories to keep our Sunshine Coast summer temperatures at bay. A few months ago, towards the end of the northern summer, I joined a two week expedition to the Arctic, on a small scientific exploration boat catering for a maximum of 54 passengers. We left from Reykjavik, Iceland, crossing the Denmark Strait and the Arctic Circle to arrive in Svalbard’s capital, Longyearbyen, the northern-most town in the world with a population of just over 2,000. On the way, Greenland’s east coast provided us with countless fjords to explore, incredible landscapes, spectacular icebergs, gorgeous Arctic animals, and a welcoming community of Greenlanders (no longer referred to as Eskimos or Inuits) in the village of Ittoqqortoormiit. The advantage of a small ship was that we could delve further into the fjords and navigate better through the ice pack, compared to the larger boats. Every day, we cruised about in our little zodiacs, trekked the

tundra, climbed the mountains, circled the icebergs, and watched the calving glaciers. We met: musk ox, arctic foxes, arctic hares, and reindeer (was that Rudolf I saw?) and many species of birds. Heading across the Atlantic Ocean the ice pack also revealed some treasures – a handsome bearded seal, and… lazing on an iceberg... a very beautiful and quite nonchalant polar bear. What cool memories! PS Teachers - consider the teachers up there who have to do playground duty every day sporting a rifle - just in case!

We love our beautiful Wendy Roe & Patrick Smith… from Pandora Selections @ Shop 430. Wendy sells women’s fashion plus back supports to help correct posture. Wendy is also the voice behind Friday Fashion parades at The Square. “My new career move as a fashion compere has been a huge hit! And thanks to some professional training ... I’m loving it.” Kiwi born, Wendy was raised by an army family, has lived in Malaysia for some time and has travelled extensively through India and Nepal. Even now she loves heading back to Vietnam and Thailand for a cultural fix. Wendy took a great leap on Australia Day this year and became an Australia Citizen!!! Well done Wendy, now you’re a true Ozzie! Looking back at her proudest achievements, whilst raising a family, Wendy organised children’s learn to sail, re-enlivened senior school sailing, skateboarding and held children’s festivals. Very dear to Wendy’s heart is her passion for wearable art, “being part of the NZ wearable Arts Awards (now held in Nelson, NZ every second year), and introducing this art into the high school curriculum was one of my proudest moments.” In their spare time, Patrick and Wendy love sailing and embracing the magic of life! N atu re N otes A R A C H N O P H O B I A : I R R AT I O N A L O R OBSESSIVE FEAR OF SPIDERS Kon Hepers, Eumundi One of our “missions” when we recently visited New Zealand, was to obtain photos of the Katipo Spider for a talk we were preparing. The Katipo looks just like our Red-back spider but without the red flare and is part of the universal Black Widow group. It’s very closely related to our Red-back; some scientists class it as the same species, having the same venom. Its habitat though is quite different: it is found under flotsam on back-of-the-beach sand dunes and is classed as endangered. After three weeks we found one, on our last day. In the seaside town of Whakatane, we browsed in a bookshop and came across a small book titled, Spiders of New Zealand. On the front cover is an image of a harmless endemic little Sheetweb Spider. We picked it up and took it to the sales lady. She took one look, dropped the book, trembled uncontrollably, went white as a sheet, could not speak and needed assistance not only to a chair but also to remain there without falling. The proprietor of the shop rang for an ambulance - now that is arachnophobia. Many people do have an intense fear of spiders, even if not to that extreme. But it is wise to be cautious as all

spiders have venom of greater or lesser potency. Our area is home to spiders of many species but only a few make their presence known. With maybe one exception, they do not bite unless handled roughly. We were recently reminded that arachnophobia also applies to several species of arachnids which are not spiders. Two of these are wellknown – scorpions and ticks, with the latter causing more harm than most of the spiders collectively. We were moving some logs and found a small scorpion underneath. Wanting to relocate it to safety, we let it run onto the palm of our hand. We have done that previously with no bad consequences, but this time we were stung on the wrist. The books advice: “sting not known to be dangerous”. That may be so, but it’s quite painful for about six hours – and this was a small one! Over the years, we have hosted hundreds of paralysis ticks with mixed effects, with two trips to the hospital. Far from building up immunity (our dog did), we are becoming more sensitive. These little arachnids are potentially dangerous. The large spiders here don’t worry us at all. Even if that large huntsman sitting in the

White-tailed spider

corner of your bedroom decides to walk across your face at night, don’t panic. They may have eight legs but they tread softly and they eat cockroaches!

At night (or early morning) in your garden, you may well blunder into a very large spider web strung between trees at face height. That’s one of the many Orb-web spiders. The web is quite sticky and often the spider itself also ends up stuck to your face. No worries – they almost never bite. The spider that used to scare us the most, without actually having seen one, is the Whitetailed spider. There are so many stories and photographs in older books of the necrotic effect of a bite, with open ulcers that never heal. When scientists (in this case arachnologists) did some systematic work on the 200 or so species of Whitetailed spiders, they could not find one single confirmed case of necrotism. The actual cause of that condition is a soil-borne bacterium called sphingomyelinase. It is (rarely) found in an introduced species

of the Recluse spider found only in South Australia. However, there is one easily recognised spider that must be treated with care. The distinctive Redback spider has a potent latrotoxin dangerous to humans and is rated third most dangerous of Australian spiders, after the deadly Funnelwebs. They are often found in dark corners of garden sheds, under outdoor furniture and in empty flower pots. Just today we found one under the tiled coping around our swimming pool, a place where little fingers would touch all the time when playing in the pool. No cause for panic, but extreme caution - especially if children are about. Effects from bites can be very severe, even fatal. No tourniquet should be applied but immediate medical intervention is a must.

Outdoors R AT H E R N O T L O S E Y O U R H O M E I N A B U S H F I R E ? Duncan Sayers, 1st Officer Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade, Eumundi At the recent Coolum Beach fire, the Public Safety and Preservation Act (PSPA) was invoked, requiring residents of properties at risk of being impacted by an approaching bushfire, to evacuate the area. As you can imagine, this is an extremely stressful situation for residents – leaving their homes and possessions at the mercy of the approaching fire. One of the effects of the PSPA is to close access to an area, so some residents might not have been able to return to their homes to retrieve irreplaceable items. Fortunately, no properties were lost – this time. The Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade will be running a Bushfire Awareness workshop on how to best prepare your property for such an eventuality on Monday 27 February, at 7pm at the Eumundi Rural Fire Brigade Shed, Napier Rd, (opposite the Eumundi Square markets). You won’t have adequate time

for last minute preparations; so what can you do well in advance to make your property defendable from bushfire, and to give firefighting crews remaining on scene the best chance to protect your home? • Learn the fundamentals of how bushfire behaves in our landscape and how this might influence how you manage your property

Dog park for Eumundi

It’s been a bone of contention for many years. Does Eumundi need a dog park? Would it be put to good use, or is it a waste of community park space? Eumundi Community Combined Organisation (ECCO) and local Council want know your thoughts... Katie Harvison: An “off leash” space would be brilliant for dogs to have a real run and hang out with other doggy mates. It would probably need to be somewhere fenced like the Eumundi Showground - even just at certain times of the day. Jutta Guenther: I am not a supporter of fenced areas. Designated dog beaches are not fenced off and both dog and owner enjoy their time. It is more a matter of the dog(s) being well socialised and always under effective control of the owner. The last thing you want is a dog who cannot be controlled let go inside a fenced off area where the other pooches cannot escape. I would like to see a designated off leash area in town (not fenced) with the dogs required to be under effective control at all times. A good dog trainer will help owners to learn how to build their confidence and train their dog. Lyn Johnston: Yes please! A fenced off leash park here in Eumundi would be great and visitors would love it also. Marina Constanti: Off leash area in town much needed. Lilly would love to have space to run and play with other dogs. Wouldn’t be too hard to fence off the green behind the day care centre. Rebecca Frith: Yes please - we’d like somewhere fenced in where our dogs can practice their social skills. I don’t know where our nearest dog park is ... Melinda Morris: Yes please, a poochie park, a social interaction for humans as well. Karen Bracher: Waste of community space in my opinion. People 17

take their dogs to the park anyhow. Duncan Sayers: We need a fenced human park ... keep the dogs safe. Kylee Tanya: A space for the pooches to run free is always a good thing!

Australia’s largest sustainable farm input company is right here on your doorstep!

As far as I am– aware Sunshine Coast

Russ and Jen Benson: A waste of space I believe. There are several suited areas in town as it is for people to take their dogs to.

(*excl. books and instruments) council has no fenced dog areas for miles. Need places for puppies to learn and run and be safe before they learn recall. A well trained, well socialised dog is a good dog and a pleasure to have around town. It is also a great gathering place for people to interact whilst the doggies have a brilliant time. Not so expensive just need a fence and a tap...maybe some bench seats for the elderly? Bring it!

Elizabeth Louise Battersby: Yes, yes! I had a conversation with Council some months ago. In reality it would be years in the Open Monday – Friday making! Time to get the ball rolling I think. 8.30am – 4.45pm

Suzanne Lee: A fenced off park with doggy bags at the entrance 7 Harvest is a definite asset to any community. A dog yard is Rd, not Yandina far from (Near the Ginger Factory) our daughter’s home: she gets a walk; the baby gets a walk; the 9900 dog gets a walk and the ball thrown for him.Ph. I walk my dog around town all the time, she gets a great run, meets doggy friends and has been well socialised in Eumundi for over five years. There’s heaps of great places around the edges of town to take well behaved dogs for a good run. Awesome dog walking town! Isabelle CunninghamDoolan: If money is being spent I really would rather see a fence around the kids park and a pedestrian crossing in the main street. Sarah Hillhouse: Why can’t we use the showground at designated times of the day? The most underutilised place in town. Does anyone even go down there to kick a ball around?

E U M U N D I K E N N I LW O RT H R D I S S U ES & CAR DUMP

Jacqueline Rutland: Yes! As far as I am aware Sunshine Coast council has no fenced dog areas for miles. Need places for puppies to learn and run and be safe before they learn recall. A well trained well socialised dog is a good dog and a pleasure to have around town.

Could the Green tell people, that there has been a speed limit change on Eumundi Kenilworth Rd, off the highway near Bunya Rd, past A1 storage continuing on EK rd up to the recently added 80km/hr signs before Brow ns Creek Rd (No signs to say it has changed, so people are experiencing road rage, thinking you’re going slow to piss them off). Also, could people please stop doing the illega l right turn off the bridge, to access the highway heading to Cooroy, as it scares the crap out of drivers coming aroun d the corner from Kenilworth Rd, not expecting a car sideways in front of them on the bridge. The left exit loop around works very well.

Mike Long: Great idea. Overdue. Also, how many of you naysayers have dogs?

And, do you know why we have a car dump yard in the creek bed beside the showgrounds? Very traile r trash look for our town.

Gypsy Mel: Yes please. A fenced area that dogs can socialise in without stressing parents of kids in the park.

Kait, Eerwah Vale.

Jonathan A J Synnock: Not at all needed [as] everybody who lives here has a yard.

Have a story, opinion or message you’d like to share with your community?

Natasha O’Grady: Yes! Yes! Yes! Chaley Scott: Oh yes... that would be awesome.
