The best little playground on the Sunny Coast is about to get better! Early 2018 will see a further development of our iconic Dick Caplick playground to include fantastic new BBQ facililities and... (drum roll please) a slippery slide! Thanks to Sunshine Coast Council and Councillor Greg Rogerson the park’s play area and gathering space will be extended to include: * Construction of pedestrian path network in and around the playground and BBQ shelter * Construction of BBQ shelter in the same style as the existing rotunda. The group of 33 teenagers and five teachers learnt about Thai food and culture. Restaurant owner Jang Etheridge shared the group had the opportunity to… “learn and get the knowledge about the different kinds of people who eat vegan and vegetables, and also people who eat gluten free.”

The group of around 60 people from the food industry made new connections and learnt about leadership, culture and communication in the workplace from Harrison Human Resources.

BOOTS PERFECT FIT Agave Blue business owner and Doonan local Zoe Kennedy shared, “It’s a beautiful thing to live in your favourite place selling something you love.” Zoe and husband Tarquin recently opened their boot store on Memorial Dr, but have actually been selling handmade Mexican boots in Eumundi since 2014. The stall soon became a microbusiness at Eumundi Square where she trialed her designs and refined the branding. Zoe shared that her micro business shop was the perfect launch pad to start a successful business from. “Louis’ Eumundi Square was the perfect incubator – it allowed us to organically grow with the business.” “There’s no way we could have opened a shop in town without building up the clientele there

Car park crackdown The Goodstart Early Learning centre on Napier Road has 10 car parks adjoining the centre which are all signed for 15 minutes during week days (Monday to Friday). These car spaces were allocated to give parents a convenient and safe place to park and to enable the escorting of their little ones into and out of the facility without having to do laps of Eumundi, especially on Wednesday Market Day. Unfortunately there have been many reports that these

designated parking spots are being taken up by market-goers for hours at a time, leaving parents with the tough task of finding somewhere else to park during drop-off and pickup times and putting the safety of children at greater risk. To prevent this from continuing, there will be a rigorous crackdown on illegal parking in these childcare centre spots. Parking inspectors will be closely monitoring the area, particularly during market Wednesdays so please do the right thing and leave these spots free for their intended purpose. North Arm Park There’ll soon be some extra bounce in North Arm Park with the basketball court to undergo renewal works. A new concrete slap with line markings and basketball equipment will replace the existing facilities. Work will commence shortly and is expected to be finished by mid-December.

Music ROCK OPERA RETURNS WITH NIFF Local hinterland band HoneyBird is returning to Eumundi with their popular rock opera performance paired with the screening of Metropolis as part of this year’s Noosa International Film Festival (NIFF) on Sunday 29 October, 3.30pm at Eumundi School of Arts. The Green spoke to guitarist and composer Anthony WynneHoelscher about what compelled his band to create a rock opera for Fritz Lang’s 1927 iconic silent film. What is it about the Metropolis movie that attracted HoneyBird? History is repeating… Metropolis takes place in a highly stylised futuristic city where a beautiful, exotic utopia exists above a dystopic underworld populated by faceless, mistreated workers. And this resonates more than ever with Brexit, the election of Trump, nuclear posturing from North Korea etc, so we felt it would be good to reimagine the artistic vision and striking meaning of Metropolis as a live rock-opera. The score

developed by my band conveys the production’s intended message. [It’s a] re-imagining of the artistic vision and striking meaning of Metropolis, addressing issues of poverty and conflict, love and humanity, power and greed, and political themes as they play out today. What appeals about a rock opera? It’s a visceral experience for both the audience and the performers not unlike the operas of old - where music is matched to a highly theatrical work incorporating this magnificent film, underpinned by a live music performance, plus a string quartet!

What’s the School of Arts like to perform in? Awesome - unbelievable acoustics, great stage, good sight lines, fabulous space - and all the lovely old school quirks of a country hall. Will you be creating a soundtrack to other films in the future? We plan to tour Metropolis next year in major cities as this show has a lot of life in it. After this, who know? There’s plenty of creative space out there in a time of unprecedented historic uncertainties: A.I. robotics, climate change, responses to global terror, madmen in power... what a palette to work from!

Books KAZUO ISHIGURU: WINNER OF 2017 NOBEL P R I Z E F O R L I T E R AT U R E Judith Pattison, Doonan The 2017 Nobel Prize for Literature has been awarded to English writer, Kazuo Ishiguru. The prize is one of a suite of awards (Chemistry, Physics, Peace, Physiology or Medicine and latterly, Economic Sciences) established as part of the will of Alfred Nobel in 1895 for, “In the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction,” for an author from any country based on their entire body of work rather than a specific book”. It is awarded annually, by the Swedish Academy, following a complicated vetting process, and although considered to be the most prestigious literary award, it has had its share of criticism. Last year’s winner, Bob Dylan, is a case in point. Even Dylan seemed surprised and not all that pleased to win. Some winners have even refused the award which has been accused of being Eurocentric, increasingly irrelevant, politically biased and erratic in its selections. Of the 110 winners, some Laureates have disappeared into obscurity, while those overlooked are now

celebrated. As Indian academic Sabaree Mitra, said, though the Nobel Prize in Literature is significant and tends to overshadow other awards, it is “not the only benchmark of literary excellence”. I would say, in response, of course it isn’t. It is one compass point on a map meant to be interpreted with others. In a way, the controversy around this award, and others like it, is part of what makes them so important. We should care enough about the profound redemptive value of literature to argue about it. In a world on fire, in every sense of the word, “outstanding works in an ideal direction” are more important now than ever. I reread Ishiguru’s Remains of the Day for this article and was struck by just how beautifully written and relevant it remains. The protagonist’s unquestioning loyalty and duty to a dubious master at the expense of love and human connection especially resonates.

While the pressing issues of the day can make reading seem irrelevantfiddling while Rome burns Ishiguro’s Remains of the Day convinces me that it is an antidote.

Sensei Peter Zarb, Kakurin Kan Karate Do QLD, Eumundi. home, less grumpy when I’m unexpectedly challenged, more engaged with my family. My wife and I put our heads together and came up with a way for both of us to get some time alone to do some physical activity and reset.

I thought working full time, running a part time karate school and coming home to a sick baby boy and an exhausted new mum was tough... then I became a stay-at-home dad and gained a greater appreciation for my wonderful wife, and stay home parents everywhere. Having a child with a medical condition in a constant state of discomfort added to the challenge. I have to confess, sleep deprivation, dropping to one wage (as the young lad needs a full time carer), bills, part time study, chores - and all the other big person stuff - were enough to drive me bonkers. It was a petri dish ripe for breeding poor mental health and poor home life. And yet, I’ve managed to maintain some semblance of myself. I owe this in large to the support of my partner and to regular, physical exercise. Described in a very simple way, exercising improves our lung capacity, which means more oxygen for our blood. Our heart rate rises during any fitness activity to circulate the oxygen around the body. The more we exercise, the more efficient the heart becomes and eventually lowers your resting heart rate. The higher heart rate means more blood going to the brain, and more food for our brain

cells. The brain receives 15-20% of all blood pumped through our bodies. This will result in feeling more alert and awake while training and a greater focus after. Exercise triggers several chemical reactions in the brain, including endorphins and serotonin. These chemicals are neurotransmitters well known for their role in our mood and depression. The part of the brain involved with learning and memory is stimulated by the increase of oxygen. “Without a strong and virtuous mind, the body is useless” Tadahiko Ohtsuka We now see how mutually inclusive breathing is with good mental health. Too often we breathe because it’s automatic. Recent medical studies have attributed enhanced emotional judgment and memory recall with rhythmic breathing control. Exercises of any kind require you to become present with your breathing, so it is an active

action rather than a passive one. Getting out of your regular environment is also tantamount to improving your mood. Change is as good as a holiday they say. But better still, engaging in an activity is a welcome distraction from the perpetual deja vu of daily routines. Exercise encourages you to focus on the present, not the past or future. There’s also the benefit of socialisation with likeminded people in group activities like karate, or the revitalisation of solitude that working out at a gym can offer. The bottom line is that I feel better after I’ve had an hour or two to myself and done something to get my respiratory system activated. If I feel good, I’m going to be more useful at

Who doesn’t love dumplings! Executive chef Zeb Gilbert created this recipe to feature in The Noosa Cooking School’s dumpling and buns Masterclass – but it’s a hit whether I make it in class or at home for my family. Dumplings are also loads of fun. We are both big believers in getting kids in the kitchen and this dumpling recipe is another one that you can share with the whole family. Ingredients

To Garnish

• 300 g organic pork belly

• 1 punnet micro herbs

• 300 g Fraser Island spanner crab

• 1/2 bunch chives cut into three cm batons

• 1 garlic clove, finely chopped

• 1 cup of Chinese celery leaves

• 2 tblsp chopped chives • 2 tblsp chopped coriander • Olsson’s macrobiotic sea salt to taste • A pinch of ground white pepper • 30 dumpling wrappers • 2 trays lightly dusted in flour • 2 ltr of a good quality fish or chicken stock

• Drizzle of sesame oil Method • Dice pork belly into 2 cm squares then put through the mincer (if you don’t have a mincer you can use minced pork). Put minced pork into a large bowl. • Add the chopped chives, coriander and garlic to the pork mince and combine. 14

• Add the spanner crab to the bowl and combine.

• Add salt and pepper to taste.

• For the garnish, pick and chop all ingredients, place in a bowl with sesame oil and toss.

• Spoon a heaped teaspoon of filling into the centre of dumpling wrapper, then form a taco shape and start pinching one end of the wrapper to seal, heading towards the middle. Use water to help stick the edges of the wrapper together. • Place finished dumplings onto a floured tray. • Place stock into large pot and bring to simmer. • Once all dumplings are made, add into the

• Place dumplings into your serving bowl, pour hot stock around the dumplings and top with your garnish.

Outdoors COMMUNITY GARDEN Hi all garden enthusiasts! Well, we have been busy little beavers at the Eumundi Community Garden. Brian Jane has built us a wonderful, new entrance with recycled gates donated from the Formosa family - it looks amazing! We had our last working bee on Sunday 8 October where we finished off the rubble drain. We’ve made it look a lot more aesthetically pleasing by adding the Mary River gravel to create the dry creek bed look. This drain was planted out with blue irises and lomandra by Gwenda, Anja, Billy and Daniel and Terry McDonald - a visiting volunteer from Brisbane.

worms! – I am not talking garden worms… (part 2)

In part 1, we looked at the issues with worms in farm animals, in particular goats. Now let’s have a look at some ways to minimise worm loads and this is relevant to most livestock. I specialise in farm animals and have recently become a qualified animal nutritionist for all animals. I also have an array of tame, friendly farm animals that I care for on my property as part of my Animal Petting Zoo side business. Three ideas for your farm: 1. Rotate paddocks every ten days and leave grazing paddocks empty for at least three months. Lime paddocks to alter their pH which can make it less attractive for intestinal worms/eggs.

2. Provide a smorgasbord of minerals as a free range lick so the animals can

self-medicate (in particular copper and sulphur for goats, but professional advice should be sought as you must provide the right form of powder and not overdose). Intestinal worms do not thrive when appropriate levels of copper are in an animal’s diet. Goats in a domestic environment tend to lack copper that they would otherwise get from leaves and branches, but beware as copper can be toxic, so seek professional advice first. 3. Provide a suitable environment for the livestock. For example: more foraging for goats and grazing for sheep and horses. Some plants and weeds are toxic to animals so ensure you study your paddocks before letting your animals graze and forage.

N atu re N otes A TA I L O F T W O S WA M P I E S [ PA R T 2 ] Kon & Mos Hepers, Verrierdale We were fascinated by the way two swampies, Megsie and Willie, who were brought up together at our Verrierdale property, reared on the same milk-substitute formula with three-hourly feeds, trips to the vet for antibiotics and home administered injections, can turn out so different. About the only thing they have in common is that they seem to regard eating as a highly erotic stimulus and at such times they live up to the common name of “stinker” for swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor). Their body odour really is revolting. When they were still very little they lived in cotton pouches slung from a chair in the house, then gradually learnt to come out for longer periods, explore the house, hop about and jump up on things. An armchair became a favourite camping spot. Even then all Meggsie wanted to do was veg out and Willie never stopped annoying him. When scared, or tired, they would dash back to their correct pouch and dive in headfirst, tuck in their long back legs, do a commando roll and pop their little heads out again. With all baby macropods, when they are “at foot” is a tricky

and trying period because they are constantly “under foot” and follow their adopted mum every step. It would have been too easy to take an incautious step back and do serious injury to a little joey. Once they were weened they needed to learn to be wallabies. When rearing wildlife, it’s important to remember that the object of the exercise is a successful release into their natural habitat in the wild. No matter how familiar they may be, how cute they are and how much you enjoy your interaction, they are not long-term pets. If you have the correct habitat on your property and can release them there, you might never see them again. But if they choose to hang around a bit or visit occasionally, enjoy it. We built them an enclosure of about an acre having both dense scrub and a grassed area, where they could learn to run and to hide and other essential

bushcraft. It also familiarised them with the local vegetation. Of course we had no way of teaching them what was good to eat and what to avoid and which animals would harm them. Without their natural mums to show them, we figured they would have to rely on their instincts. Within their enclosure Willie would often whizz around the perimeter at top speed while Meggsie would find a little spot under a bush and hide when we came to check if they were ok. He gave us many a heart attack when we thought he was gone. Only supplementary bottle-feeds would bring him out. There was also a huge fallen tree in there and the boys would hop up on top and, like all boys, engage in king-of-the-castle and push each other off. Cont’d on pg 18

Later that day we couldn’t help ourselves and went looking for them. Meggsie was nowhere to be seen – probably asleep somewhere - but Willie came

bounding up one of the tracks. Relieved that we had come to the rescue? Overjoyed to see us? No way! A flying drop-kick to the solar plexus was the thanks. It’s not easy being a wallaby’s foster parent!
