Rotary is providing a new award for children at Eumundi State School (ESS), giving recognition to those who go out of their way to help others or improve a situation. Rotary is looking forward to filling and burying time capsules presented to ESS to commemorate the naming of the Sunshine Coast’s 50th anniversary. Official opening of the “Terraces” The biggest capital project by Eumundi community organisations is now complete. The area known as The Terraces was officially opened by Mayor Mark Jamieson on Friday 27 October. A joint initiative by Eumundi Combined Community Organisation – Experience Eumundi, Eumundi Historical Association, Eumundi & District Community Association and Sunshine Coast Council, the refurbished Terraces includes new pathways, lighting and retaining walls, new garden areas and trees, improved drainage, refurbished seating and new water bubblers and dog bowls. This ensures the market site remains safe and welcoming for those 1.2 million people who come to the Eumundi Markets each year. Our town’s Markets support local artisans and help the 500 local micro-businesses who take up stalls at each market day and continue to be one of the Coast’s largest private employers. This much needed, high quality upgrade helps position Eumundi well into the future to remain Australia’s greatest artisan market.

Last Thursday night Eumundi Square Markets held their annual business awards. Around 200 people from local businesses and stalls, along with their families, turned out for a sit-down evening under the stars which included music from Happy Endings and dinner catered for by Eumundi’s Sala Thai Restaurant. Joining the Eumundi Square celebrations were businesses nominated for the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce Award. The winners were each presented with $1000 and a beautiful award created by Eumundi Timber Craftsman, David Suters. Eumundi Square Market Manager and event organiser Jenny Formosa stated,

“Our annual Eumundi Business Awards is an opportunity for our traders and local business people to connect - and enjoy an evening together outside of working hours.” Jenny maintains the event fosters business excellence, innovation, development and success. “Businesses are recognised for their contribution to the lifestyle and economy of Eumundi,” she explained. Jenny has recently been taking on more of the management for the Formosa market business from her father Louis, who gave her glowing praise on the night, along with her team. Cont’d on pg 6

Community TERRACES OPEN FOR BUSINESS Mayor Mark Jamieson and Greg Rogerson joined Eumundi community groups and Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) workers at the revamped Eumundi Terraces official opening last Friday morning. The $1.45 million upgrade was a collaborative effort between SCC and local community groups: Experience Eumundi (EE; formerly ECCO), Eumundi Historical Association (EHA) and Eumundi & District Community Association (EDCA). Mayor Jamieson stressed the importance of caretaking the world renowned Eumundi Markets as it’s the biggest tourist attraction on the Sunshine Coast. “1.2 million people come to these markets every year – to put that into perspective – that’s more than the airport.” “It’s also one of the Coast’s biggest employers and adds to the region being known as a creative destination,” he explained. SCC Project Officer (and all round nice guy) Stephen Porter shared that the project was community driven but designed to perfectly suit the markets. The project’s landscape architect, Rob Waddell of Guymer Bailey, agreed and explained the revamp needed to be user friendly for locals, stall holders and market goers. “It was a balance between creating open

spaces the community can use and being a busy market with respite spaces,” Rob explained. Significant civil design constraints included: a layout based on the size of leasable market spaces; easy vehicle access; and the fig trees. “I also wanted to reinforce Eumundi’s design character which is a bit eclectic.” he said. The Terraces market space is managed by EDCA on a Wednesday and Original Eumundi Markets on a Saturday. Original Eumundi Markets also manages The Original Eumundi Markets on both Wednesday and Saturday. The funds raised from stallholder fees go into a fund for community projects and support. Eumundi Square, Parkside markets, Eumundi Emporium and Eumundi Pavillion markets are privately owned businesses.

Photo Competition Many thanks to all the entries we had to last week’s dog photo competition. The theme was “what your dog does with you.” This came about because so many of the buyers I meet when they choose a new home are trying not just to fit in a growing family and sometimes work, but their pets (usually dogs) are a major consideration too. We had photos of puppies, large dogs and small, some on bikes, one sailing on a yacht, some in a car, one on swing. It was hugely satisfying to see how involved your pets are in day to day life. Lyn Cooper, who many of you will know as a Noosa notable and long-time resident of Doonan (in fact she probably sold many of you a home!) has judged the photos and the one that struck a chord was a simple one.

The winner is Beth and her Grandson Finn playing snakes and ladders with Molly. A game of patience and companionship. Thanks for helping us enjoy this competition, a donation for $50 will go to the RSCPA and a hamper of doggie treats will be enjoyed by Molly.

Community TIME FOR AN UPGRADE OF SEIB ROAD BRIDGE Eumundi Noosa Rd has long become the major arterial road linking the Bruce Highway to the Noosa region via Eumundi. It’s also the most direct access for hinterlanders to get to the beach, to work and most of the high schools in the Noosa region. So it’s a busy road… very busy. This thoroughfare goes across the two lane Seib Rd bridge. Locals Amy and Ross Clarke who live on Seib Rd and did much of the grunt work establishing the Eumundi Conservation Park, have been lobbying for the Seib Rd Bridge upgrade going on ten years. When asked why this bridge upgrade was important Amy said, “There are a number of reasons, but the main one is safe access to town and Eumundi State School for pedestrians and bike riders coming from Seib Rd, Wilkes Ln, Cash Rd and beyond.” Amy added that the upgrade would provide another activity for the town to offer tourists. “There’s a path that starts near the RV car park and goes under the railway bridge to pretty

much join up with the North Maroochy River crossing. This would enable bush walkers to access Seib Rd and walk up to the Verrierdale Rd entrance to the Eumundi Conservation Park,” she explained.

Local mother Hejira Convery crosses the road regularly even though there’s no safe pedestrian access. She’s fed up with risking her children’s life to get to school without driving, so she’s instigated a community online petition to get the Sieb Rd upgrade on the community’s agenda. “The only way people can get into town on foot is by walking along the edge of Eumundi Noosa Rd, squeezed into its very narrow bike lane,” Hejira declared.

Ninderry’s LNP candidate Dan Purdy feels this is an issue worth campaigning on. “Providing a solution to alleviate these concerns would benefit the whole town as it would reduce vehicle traffic [and] allow the thousands of visitors to Eumundi each year safe access to the Eumundi Conservation Park and local businesses without the need for cars (and reduce the resulting parking issues),” Dan explained.

“Whether a driver miscalculates and hits someone, a pedestrian slips or a child gets clipped on the way to school, this really is an accident waiting to happen.”

Since meeting Hejira and other concerned locals, Dan has spoken with Cr Greg Rogerson

Hejira stressed it would create local incentive to choose foot power, pedal power and fitness by using the bridge. “A pedestrian and cycle

So there’s word on the street about an arts plan for the Sunshine Coast. The questions which arise include who is it for and what does it mean? Well, the new Sunshine Coast Council’s Arts Plan is ultimately for everyone. Whether you realise it or not, culture and the creative industries are intrinsic to every community and its development. In business, corporate, education and even government departments there is (to varying degrees) creative engagement. The reason that Council have engaged practicing artists directly is that they realise just how important the arts are to our community. As one of the Sunshine Coast Council’s ambassadors representing visual art, I have the privilege and responsibility to connect with other artists in order to discuss topics such as sense of place, promotion of the arts, programs and events, people,

partnerships and how the creative industries involve one another. It is also my responsibility to give space to cynicism and critical feedback for areas in the arts and in Council which need improvement, including how they can better support and plan for the arts in this vast region. By understanding our definition of what the arts mean to us, the people it involves, how and where it happens and the impact it has on the broader community, we can plan strategies to support existing

artists living and working here. We can also nurture new and emerging people’s practice and collaborative opportunity in the region. Council have recognised this needs to be worked on and are now asking for help! We all realise that this is a working document and an ongoing process. What has also now begun are the conversations to discern the practical application of these ideas. I urge people in the creative and cultural industries to go to the Sunshine Coast Council website to brainstorm, connect and keep in touch with local networks. Also talk to one another and the other ambassadors, giving feedback and your perspective. It is not only valuable now, but for the future of our creative community. sunshinecoast.qld. gov.au

Arts THE TREE PLACE COMMUNITY SHOW During the last two years, The Tree Place Community has held creative workshops, collaborations and exhibitions, bringing together people of all ages and interests to share a common passion - a love of environment, culture and history. The workshops have been a way to give people creative tools to inspire them to learn more about plants, seasons, habitats, history and notice what is happening around them. By sharing stories and learning from the resilience of nature, we’ve connected our community and embraced the sense of well-being that comes from our relationship with trees. The beauty of this exhibition is the diversity and stories that keep evolving as Tree Place grows, the collaborations of people and the networks of community that are spreading. The Tree Place Community will be exhibiting at the Wan’din’in Artspace in Eumundi this summer. Artists included in the exhibition are: ceramicists Jane Welsh and Bec Lindenman; wearable artist Julie Gardner;

spoon carvers Jeff Frazer, Gary Field, Carol Russel and Corrie Wright, plus up and coming carvers from Noosa Pengari School. Also on show will be Bunya Inspired Forms from the Bunya Artist Collaboration, and the unveiling of ‘Tree Spirit’ a collaboration between Shane Christensen and Lyndon Davis, plus a collection of artwork created at workshops and a local 200 million year old Pentaxylon fossilised tree. No screens, social media, or songs with highly sexual lyrics required! The only visual aids used are a handmade poster naming the female anatomy, Beth dressing up as the reproductive system (which is fun and works for the visual learners), and looking at sanitary items (again fun to put a tampon in a glass of water!) This part of the workshop demystifies all things about periods and assists the girls to make informed choices.

SWIM CLUB BACK WITH A SPLASH Alasdair Scott, Eumundi Back with a big splash! Swim Club has started again, so of course the drought ended and everyone has enjoyed a good soaking. Club night is on every Thursday night from 5.45pm, with squad swimmers starting the evening off with a handicapped relay event. This is proving popular with all the swimmers and adults have a few weeks to get in training for the pre-Christmas relay event! Eumundi Swim Club welcomed some new families along to join in the fun and is always open to new members. Come along for a free try out session. At our first club night of season 2017/18, a number of swimmers were presented with Swimming Queensland mementos marking membership of swim club for five or more years. Many of these swimmers are now either in the club’s Super Squad or the State Preparation squad. For these children, training is an all

year round commitment, but club night is just about having fun and preparing younger swimmers for carnivals. Congratulations to all our swimmers who competed at the recent Open Water event on Lake Kawana and at the Sunshine Coast Club Challenge on a very wet day in Caloundra. Health P U B E R T Y TA C K L E D W I T H K N O W L E D G E In the last 15 years of working with pregnant women as a midwife, it has never been more apparent to me that women and girls lack knowledge about their bodies. This can lead to feelings of fear, disconnection and disempowerment during significant times of physical transformation such as puberty. The average onset of puberty for girls is between 10 and 12 years - some as early as nine. There is also an emotional progression for many girls as they go from year five into year six at school. Their transition is physical, emotional and mental. The release of normal pubescent hormones will begin to change their bodies. Their emotions

may cause them to behave more erratically and often be teary, tired and exhausted - all for no apparent reason. Their minds may begin to be challenged with new thoughts about self, family and friends. Thoughts of self-doubt, jealousy, perception of what is cool, their innocence, and insecurities can start to challenge their core values and security systems of relationships like never before. Empowerment can be experienced just through sitting in a circle with your peers, listening, learning, sharing and feeling vulnerable together.

Hertiage F U L L M O O N D A N C E C E L E B R AT E S 3 0 T H A N N I V E R S A RY Malcolm Prendeville, Verrierdale Full Moon Dance When the moon is full and sits high in the night sky, hundreds of likeminded individuals gather in an arty eclectic hall to celebrate their love of live music and foster a vibrant community spirit. This year marks the 30 year anniversary of the Full Moon Dances at Verrierdale Hall. The first dance was kicked off by the fabulous local musician Barry Charles on 14 November 1987. As a local Verrierdale resident at the time, Barry called the first show The Lost Lamington Show and were soon known as the Lamington Shows, then for a while the Bunya Beat Ball, until eventually they were named the Full Moon Dance. These early shows were high energy and possessed the wicked humour and eccentricity of their host Barry. Eventually Barry wanted to tour more, so Steve Tracey stepped in to run them for the next few years presenting mostly local bands. While I was there operating the sound for all the early Lamington Shows, it wasn’t till 2008 that I picked up the mantle to run events myself. I started with the intention to bring fresh, awesome acts to the Coast. I believed that if I could build a trust with patrons that whatever band is playing - even if people hadn’t heard of them - they would always be quality. It’s a feather right out of Bill Hauritz’s cap (CEO Woodford Folk Festival) for whom I worked for over 20 years as the festival’s Technical Production Manager. The only thing missing from the

old days is the huge bonfire we used to have in the garden that provided a great atmosphere. However with all the strict insurance regulations this has become unsustainable - I haven’t given up on the dream of getting the fire back though one day! The nights are special because of the location: the Verrierdale hall is old style and unpretentious. Community volunteers who look after the hall have endeavoured to maintain its traditional appearance by not altering it too much. That old world feel is now sadly part of a bygone era. Also the large outdoor bar amongst the trees gives people somewhere to gather away from the intensity of the performing artists. Promoters create events but without the support of the local community and hall committee the Full Moon Dance wouldn’t have been possible. Cont’d on pg 18

Living A ROSE BY ANY OTHER NAME

I have always been interested in heirloom plants and their historic significance. When we first moved to Belli Park I was sure we could grow roses here. And, of course, when someone said, “You can’t grow roses up here!” it was a “red flag” moment! It was just a matter of determining which species and varieties of roses would cope with our sub-tropical climate of frosts in winter and high rainfall in summer. After some research I found that the old-fashioned and heritage roses, such as Tea and China roses, did well here. And these roses are heirlooms too, passed down from generation to generation. Initially when we moved to Belli Park just over eight years ago we planted a few roses bought locally, but most of these failed to do well. Over the past three or four years, after trial and error, I have been focussed more on growing our heirloom roses. Knowing the types of roses that cope well with our climate was important. For example, Tea and China roses generally don’t like extreme cold but thrive in warmer climates. In fact, they generally flower all year round. The main issue over the past few years has been drought. Mulching well and increasing our dam’s water holding capacity have been key to keeping the roses going throughout the drought. We have around 300 or so roses now. I’m very selective about which types we grow and so we are gradually building up a collection of heirloom roses each year. I mostly grow what the Heritage Roses in Australian Society classify as heritage or old-garden

roses, along with some early 20th Century roses such as Hybrid Musks and Alister Clark roses. Alister Clark roses have been bred to cope with Australian conditions and so I’ve included a few in the rose gardens. We source more heirloom roses each winter from rose growers who specialise in heritage roses. The point of a rose in my opinion is its fragrance. And among the heirloom roses we grow here, there’s a great variety of fragrance. Some of the Tea roses have a strong, sweet scent with a hint of dried tea leaves and one of the Tea roses, Lady Hillingdon, has a fragrance of apricots and tea! Another Alister Clark rose is the Noisette climber, Milkmaid. This rose has the fragrance of a sweet, vanilla milkshake! Not all heirloom roses have a classic “rose” fragrance!

As I strolled around my backyard last Saturday, looking for a photographic opportunity, I noticed a beautiful little redheaded bird, fluttering high up in the crown of our white gum tree. I waited patiently throughout the day for it to return and was rewarded for my patience. It was a Scarlet Myzomela, commonly known as the Scarlet Honeyeater. Scarlet Honeyeaters are native to Australia, found along most of the eastern coastline from Cooktown in Far North Queensland down to Mitchell River National Park in Gippsland, Victoria. They migrate from the southern regions of Australia north during the winter, generally following the flowering of preferred food plants such

as banksias, paperbarks and turpentine trees. Scarlet Myzomela not only feeds on nectar, but also on insects such as beetles, flies, bugs and caterpillars, sallying for flying insects in the canopy. At 9 – 11 cms (3.5 - 4.3 inches) long, it is the smallest honeyeater in Australia. The male is a striking bright red with black wings, while the female is entirely brown - I was privileged enough to get a photo of both. It is more vocal than most honeyeaters, and a variety of calls have been recorded, including a belllike tinkling which was how I realised the honeyeater was in the tree each time, ready for me to photograph it, (not that it was an easy task, they flutter around and don’t rest long enough for a decent shot!) They breed during winter through to summer, generally beginning from July/August and concluding in January. A pair may raise one or two broods a year, laying two or perhaps three eggs about 16 mm (0.63 in) long and 12 mm (0.48 inches) wide. The small eggs are easily recognised; white with the larger end flecked with dull red-brown or greypurple. The eggs are laid a day apart, and the female is thought to incubate the eggs alone … I’m being very optimistic that the pair I was fortunate enough to see may be a breeding pair and that I get to watch this little family grow over the next few months. The maximum age recorded from banding is around 10 years and thankfully these stunning Scarlet Honeyeaters are not regarded as a threatened species.

Local communities gradually changed over time and many found themselves unable to maintain the upkeep of their hall. The Verrierdale Community took a risk and opted to retain ownership and control of their hall. They have to raise the money themselves to maintain it and they support the local Rural Fire Brigade as well. This decision is what motivated everyone in the community to support these regular dances and that model still exists to this day.

The Full Moon Dances held at Verrierdale Hall are regarded by many locals as being one of the Coast’s best kept secrets. It’s hard to say these amazing dances are still a secret however, as events attract healthy crowds of music lovers from all over. Anonymity was never going to be sustainable for the Full Moon Dances, with red hot national acts such as, OKA, King Tide, Tijuana Cartel, The Upsteppers, Dubmarine, Jeff Lang, Band Of Frequencies and Bombino (to name but a few) headlining in recent times.

Cont’d from pg 15 It’s unfortunate that most people think of rose petals as a garnish, but it’s a shame to waste them. Our fragrant rose petals are gorgeous in tea mixes, added to cordials, sparkling mineral water and champagne. They are also delicious in desserts, such as fruit sorbets and jellies, and in meringues and shortbreads, or to flavour fresh cream and custards. We don’t spray pesticides on our roses so the petals are safe to eat. We mainly use our pink and red roses for our dried rose petals as they retain their colour well. They’re also strongly fragrant and keep their fragrance even after drying.
