777 EUMUNDI - NOOSA ROAD, DOONAN QLD 4562

Notes Editor’s note ... A large chunk of the Green this issue is devoted to the upcoming State Election. It can be confusing knowing who does what for our community with Council, State and Federal candidates. This current election divides our region into three electorates: Nicklin – of which Peter Wellington (IND) was our Member of Parliament (but isn’t returning this election; the shiny new seat of Ninderry; and we also have a slice of the Noosa electorate in our region of which Glen Elmes (LNP) is the incumbent. The Green is distributed across sections of the electorates of Noosa, Nicklin and the new electorate of Ninderry (with Eumundi township a significant population hub). This issue, we identify all candidates for these three electorates, with a focus on the new electorate of Ninderry. The candidates focus on ‘whole of State’ issues at a regional level. These issues encompass electricity, transport, roads, infrastructure, housing, schools, hospitals and the environment. The State Government provides money to Local Government - Sunshine Coast Council and Noosa Council. So when you vote this Saturday 25 November you’re voting for the person (party) you believe will deliver the best infrastructure and environmental care for our community and region. All three of our electorates are considered safe LNP seats... but safe seats shouldn’t be ignored. Sometimes the best way to get noticed is to give things a little shake up...

Community E L E C T I O N S P E C I A L - N I N D E R RY In the northern Sunshine Coast, the new electorate of Ninderry is a new seat with no sitting MP. Ninderry was created from four seats. Ninderry is roughly in the centre of this new electorate’s boundaries so was chosen as the electorate’s name. Region: The area lies between the Bruce Highway and Sunshine Motorway and includes: Eumundi, Doonan, Verrierdale, Ninderry, Coolum Beach, Peregian Springs, Yandina, Bli Bli, Diddillibah, Kuluin, and Forest Glen. Redistribution: Takes in Coolum from Maroochydore, Bli Bli and Kuluin from Buderim, Peregian Springs from Noosa and remnant rural areas east of the Bruce Highway from Nicklin. The estimated LNP margin is 6.9%.

C A N D I D AT E S

One Nation - Barry Ward

Labor – Bill Gissane

I was raised in the coastal Victorian city of Warrnambool, before moving to Melbourne in 1991. My background is in accounting and journalism, and was a Certified Financial planner and a Self Managed Superannuation Fund professional adviser. I established a specialist Self Managed Superannuation financial planning practice with my wife Lesley, managing several hundred million dollars of funds in-house. I was also founder, strategist and managing partner of award winning financial planning software Provisio. I sold both businesses in 2013 and have entered politics in my retirement.

I’m from the NSW North Coast town of Grafton. I studied Metallurgy at the University of Wollongong. After nearly twenty years with BHP I went to CSR working as a general manager in their timber division. I then joined a group who established a consulting business operating in hazardous industries around the globe. As an owner/partner we grew to be the number one global provider in our sector after 15 years. After selling the business, my wife Anna and I moved from Houston back to Australia and settled in Coolum. We now own a small business in Yandina. 8

Liberal National - Dan Purdie

IND - Richard Bruinsma

I grew up on the northside of Brisbane. My wife, Andrea, is a Sunny Coast local and I moved here with her almost a decade ago because we wanted to raise our two children here. I am a Detective Sergeant and work across the Coast in the Child Protection and Investigation Unit. I have previously worked at the Homicide Squad and The Australian Crime Commission - where I investigated Major and Organised Crime and was awarded a Commissioner’s Certificate for identifying, investigating and dismantling a Middle Eastern Crime Gang.

I am a freelance journalist working as the editor of two community newspapers – the Coolum and North Shore Advertiser and the Sunshine Valley Gazette. I am a former media adviser in the office of former Member for Fisher Peter Slipper, a role that put me very much in touch with true community need, gave me a very good grounding in politics, and gave me experience working with all manner of people. I grew up in Toowoomba, but have lived and worked on the Sunshine Coast since 1998. I am married with four children.

Greens - Sue Etheridge

AJP – Jamila Riley

I was born at Tara on the Darling Downs and raised on a sheep and wheat property before moving to the coast 35 years ago. I have over 40 years’ experience in Banking and Finance. I worked my way up through the ranks to become a Loans Officer/ Assistant Manager, and resigned after 23 years’ service to pursue self-employment as a part owner, and accounts manager of two local successful small businesses.

I am out to create a cruelty-free world. As the Animal Justice Party candidate for Ninderry, I’ll bring kindness and honesty into government and politics. I am an enthusiastic and motivated animal activist, a change-maker. Co-founding the Sunshine Coast’s animal rights activism group SC Earthlings, I have helped organise the local animal liberation movement into a force for effective and positive outreach.

Why are you interested in running in the seat of Ninderry? Sue Etheridge: I love the Coast. It’s the best place in the world. I spent my childhood holidaying here, and that’s why I moved here in 1982. I know I can relate to and represent all residents in Ninderry. I want to focus on improving and making our essential services affordable, ensuring our region’s long-term sustainability, ending corruption and dodgy donations, stopping the Adani mega-mine, and addressing the

{ T H E G R E E N 15 November 2017

Community growing wealth inequality in Qld. Our political system is rigged to benefit corporations, not people. Let’s take back our state, and build a better future for all of us. Dan Purdie: Working on the front line as a Police Officer has given me a unique perspective on what is needed to protect those who are most at risk of harm in our community. I’ve seen how bad Government decisions can have a ripple affect across our community, so I want to be able to influence these decisions in a positive way. The new seat of Ninderry encompasses some of my favourite areas of the Coast, and is somewhere that I’ve got a really strong connection to. I want to see the Ninderry community thrive and grow, so that it’s a place where my children can grow up, get a job and retire if they so choose. Bill Gissane: Living at Coolum Beach I’ve found myself in the new seat of Ninderry. Since I had stood in number of elections both federal and state for Labor since we arrived, I decided to have another shot. When it comes to community service I’m something of an addict and I think the opportunity to serve as an elected representative is the best way to contribute. I have spent time in all facets of community service; from cooking the barbie at Little Athletics when the kids were younger, through to chairing global conferences on Health, Safety and Environment for industry groups. Barry Ward: I live right in the heart of the northern end of the seat of Ninderry, and I am passionate about preserving the many unique aspects of the region, including our natural environment, and the open laid-back liveability of the area. This region needs representation to break what has been for some time a traditional Liberal stronghold, and the greater disinterest from the ALP because it cannot come close to breaking that Liberal strong hold. The future of the region is in creating jobs, and an environment that will bring small business other than tourism, to employ our youth, and the forgotten over 50’s. I’ve watched for over a decade with great disappointment our local political representation that amounts to little more than event appearances, and has left this region virtually stagnant. Richard Bruinsma: The simple answer is that people are struggling financially, which puts huge pressure on many other aspects of their lives. Also, the community generally is disappointed in the lack of direction and action of both major parties. I want to fix those failings. In my work as a newspaper editor, I meet with people from all corners of society, and my experience in politics means I’m prepared for the work needed to make sure local voices are heard and that someone – me – will be in parliament to make sure the government is aware of the community need and makes sure it does what it is supposed to do – govern for the people.

Why are you affiliated to this party or running independent? Sue Etheridge: I joined the Greens because the Greens put people before profit. Future generations deserve a better world. The

Greens have evidence based policies and a vision for the long term, ensuring a future for us all. Dan Purdie: I’m proud that I’ve been chosen by the LNP to run in Ninderry because I believe very strongly in the areas that the LNP is fighting for. I want to see the Government do its bit to create jobs, help families with the cost of living, provide safe and liveable communities and build the bridges and rail lines that we need. Bill Gissane: After nearly forty years membership, the Labor Party for me embodies the values I grew up with: care for each other, work hard and ensure the environment is protected in a just and fair society. Two principles have guided my thinking about how to approach representative politics: think globally - act locally, and all politics is local. Labor has the best approach to form a framework around decision making. As a result, it allows representatives to exert their influence in their particular forum to achieve the best results. Barry Ward: One Nation appealed because it was the party I believed was listening to what people in Qld were saying, and how tough it was to make ends meet, or find a job in the region. One Nation is listening to all Queenslanders and what is impacting them, and what needs to be fixed. Richard Bruinsma: Political parties have lost their way. The philosophies and direction of both major parties are wayward and blurred. Candidates affiliated with major parties will always be hamstrung as to what they can say and what local issues they can pursue. I am free to do what the community wants. I really believe it is now the age of the independent – I’m experienced, approachable, dedicated and sensible, so can be a true voice and champion for the people.

How do you intend to contribute to the health of the 4562, 4561, 4563 community? The following are some of the Greens initiatives: Power and Energy for People, not Profit: Energy is a right – not a luxury. Cost of living and electricity prices are a concern for everyone. Raise the royalty rates on coal and gas to ensure that we don’t miss out in the last years of coal and gas in Qld. These resources belong to us not the mining billionaires. Money raised will help locals access quality education, a fulfilling job, healthcare, and an affordable home. Provide cheap and reliable public transport and reduce congestion and travel times and free public transport for under 18’s. Stop Adani: The Adani mega-mine proposed for the Galilee basin is a focus of huge concern for voters everywhere. The Greens are the only party outwardly opposing this proposed mine. Dan Purdie: I want to use my experience as a police detective to make our community safer, and more liveable. I think that it’s also very important to protect our current way of life. I don’t want to see this part of the Coast become like the Gold Coast - we need to grow slowly and make sure we have the infrastructure we need, of which the LNP’s $300M plan to duplicate the rail line is but 9

{ T H E G R E E N 15 November 2017

a small part of. That’s why I’ve fought for an upgrade to the Sieb Rd Bridge in Eumundi which, if elected, the LNP and I will provide $500,000 to fund a new pedestrian and cycle bridge. I’m also pleased to be able to promise the introduction of our Wi-Fi Tourism policy to Eumundi, providing the town with free wi-fi. This means that we can continue to build the town’s national and international image as a unique tourist destination, and provide a further boost to the local economy. The LNP is also committing $25,000 to the Eumundi Wildlife Refuge, so that they can continue the incredible work they’re doing looking after our wildlife. And I look forward to making further announcements on the LNP’s plan for our area. Bill Gissane: New Seat - Fresh Start! The Hinterland has consistently returned members from the LNP. The problem arises that for LNP members working hard for constituents is optional. It must be dispiriting for them to hear in the their party room that no matter how hard they advocate, the Sunshine Coast and Hinterland is just not important. It’s no wonder that several of them have become “passengers”. In this election, the two most likely outcomes are a small majority Palaszczuk government or a minority LNP government with One Nation support. If i were to be elected, working hard is not an option - it’s essential! The new seat of Ninderry could determine the government and think how much influence I could exert on behalf of the Ninderry constituents. Barry Ward: When politicians on the Coast have been referred to as “Submarine” (only appearing at election time) “Mirror” (I will look into it) and “Go Away” (there is nothing I can do) you know they are there for a career, and not for the people they represent. The Sunshine Coast and our northern Ninderry post codes 4561, 4562 and 4563 almost don’t exist when it comes to Government representation and funding. The Sunshine Coast is the third largest population area, but 10th on the list for Government spending. There are many projects the northern end of the seat of Ninderry that need representation by someone that will fight hard to get funding – The Beddington Rd bridge flooding, The Seib Rd-Eumundi pedestrian crossing, finally getting the dual rail to Nambour, and work to ensure our major traffic bottlenecks for commuters to and from Brisbane are attended to. Richard Bruinsma: This was once a cliché, but it’s not anymore - my aim is to listen to the people, hear their concerns, and discuss and negotiate with government to try to meet those concerns. There are countless issues and needs in the community; some matters that are of life and death for some people would barely raise a ripple for others. On health, I’m disturbed that ordinary people seem to often miss out of the basic level of care that really should be a basic human right. Waiting lists may waver a little but they are always unacceptable. I’m also a supporter of dental care being able to be bulk-billed, but that’s a federal government matter. If Queensland’s finances can get back into check, through sensible decisions again, we can focus on improving the health system further.

Community ELECTION SPECIAL - NICKLIN Nicklin was first contested at the 1986 election and is named after former Country Party Premier Frank Nicklin, who represented the Sunshine Coast in state parliament for nearly four decades. The seat of Nicklin has existed since 1986. The seat was dominated by the National Party until 1998, and since then has been held by independent Peter Wellington. The MP won with a margin of 14.9% in 2015 but is not running for re-election. Region: Nicklin covers the rural hinterland of the northern Sunshine Coast, mainly on the western side of the Bruce Highway. It includes: Eerwah Vale, North Arm, Belli Park, Cooroy, Yandina, Nambour, Woombye, Palmwoods, Mapleton and Kenilworth. Redistribution: Boundary changes with neighbouring electorates meant areas east of the Bruce Highway were lost to the new seat of Ninderry, while Palmwoods and Woombye from Glass House were gained. In estimated two-party preferred terms this increases the LNP margin from 2.9% to 3.7%.

IND – Tony Moore

Liberal National - Marty Hunt

Born in Redcliffe, Queensland, October 1971, Tony was raised in a Christian home and lived on the north side of Brisbane. Tony is a married father of four, a local cabinetmaker, Nicklin resident and descendant of Yandina cane farmers. He holds an MBA, a Master of Politics and Public Policy as well as legal qualifications, Child Protection Practice and experience in community interventions and indigenous engagement, a Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Psychology) and a trade in Cabinetmaking.

Marty Hunt was a police officer for 30 years and is now looking to serve Nicklin in Qld Parliament. The father of two has been Nambour branch manager of The Sunshine Coast Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC) for 15 years. He left behind a fast-paced position as a Brisbane detective to take on new challenges after falling in love with the precinct while filling in for the former branch manager. The Nambour PCYC was recently awarded Sunshine Coast Community Organisation of the Year. One Nation - Steven Ford

I grew up on a cattle property near Miles and went to University in Toowoomba and studied Accountancy & Business Studies. After 25 years in the Middle East and Africa for managing drilling companies, I came back to Australia as the Country Manager for one of the big multinationals, Weatherford and after turning that company around, I was invited to start a new joint venture between two of the biggest companies in the world, Royal Dutch Shell and China National Petroleum Corporation. I established and built the company here in Queensland. I returned to Saudi Arabia as a consultant before retiring to enter politics. 10

Labor – Justin Raethel

IND - Jeffery Hodges

38 year-old Justin has lived on the Coast since 2001 when he returned to Australia from the USA. He holds a Bachelor of Business with a minor in Information Systems from the University of the Sunshine Coast. He has worked as a Technical Support Officer at the Nambour State College for the past eight years. Justin was the Labor candidate for this seat at the 2015 election.

Keep Nicklin Independent! Jeffrey is an internationally recognised speaker, author, educator and performance coach to elite athletes, including Olympic gold medallists Lydia Lassila and Sara Carrigan. Jeffrey holds a Bachelor of Science, Masters (Hons) in SocialScience, and Bachelor of Education degrees.

AJP – Rachel Radic I work as a Special Education Teacher and am a big advocate for equality in society and equality before the law. We need to do more to protect the vulnerable in the community; humans and animals. All children deserve to grow up with the same fair go in life. For this reason I would like to see more resources for those with special needs. I will also continue to campaign for more resources to protect our animal companions from harm and neglect.

Greens - Mick Tyrell I was born and raised on the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland, and moved to the Sunshine Coast over 15 years ago. I’ve been a builder all my life and currently own and operate my own businesses which employs numerous tradespeople, and I always try to support my local suppliers. I have also spent many years in project management on large building sites and resorts. I know how to make things happen.

Community MONSTERS TAKE OVER THE TOWN Despite Halloween falling on a school night again this year, Eumundi was overrun on the 31 October by hundreds of pint sized ghouls dragging their parents in chains through cobwebbed streets. The 110 Estate was a hotbed of sugared up children carrying sacks of lollies, laughing and howling at the moon in celebration of this North American, Mexican and Pagan festival which is gaining more of a following in Australia - and in Eumundi - in recent years. Houses welcoming kids went to a lot of trouble to decorate their gardens and doorways and provide treats for what seemed like an endless procession of excited gremlins.

I’m extremely pleased to report that council has accepted the proposal to name the bridge on Wegner Road at North Arm, Bill Davison Bridge. Bill was an outstanding local man who sadly passed away early this year. So it’s terrific that we now have a permanent reminder and tribute to Bill’s wonderful legacy. Eumundi Business awards: I had the great pleasure of attending the 10th annual Eumundi Business Awards recently and I must say what really stood out on the night was the very strong sense of camaraderie within the market scene. A big congratulations to the Farmhouse Eumundi

B&B and its owners Tania and Leigh Cheyne who took out this year’s top honour as the Eumundi Business of the year. I paid my respect on the night to Louis Formosa and family for the enormous effort and financial contribution given in hosting and picking up the tab for the Awards night. Once again, I would like to publicly acknowledge Louis, Louise and Jenny Formosa for your continued commitment to the wonderful village of Eumundi. It would also be remiss of me not to acknowledge the great contribution put in by Eumundi Chamber of Commerce on the night as well!

My job is the luckiest one, with every day (and sometimes evenings) being different and unpredictable. There are a few ups and downs and a lot of emotion on the way… Sellers who are anxious to settle, Buyers who are frustrated at not finding what they really want. Sometimes we haggle over the purchase price, sometimes inclusions but when the dust settles and the buyers move in and love their home…and the Sellers move on happily with relief to their next property, then that’s when I am at my most content. The picture was taken with some happy flowers a lovely Seller recently gave me on settlement. And some take the time to pen a thank you. From a Recent Buyer “Ever had that situation, when you’re dealing with several agents and you just want that one agent to be the one to get the sale? No... Then you need to work with Penny. Penny provided a complete service, which for buyers not being local like ourselves was essential. We were given a walk through of each of the properties that we requested to view online and as with the other properties they didn’t quite fit the bill. We were only up for two days, however even being on tight timeline Penny called and said she had a property that she felt would be perfect, even though she had spent just a little over an hour with us. It was PERFECT, we LOVED it, now that is the epitome of a fantastic agent! In the short time that Penny had spent with us, she had found us the perfect house in one day, that we hadn’t managed to find ourselves in three months. Even in the lead up to settlement Penny gave us lots of local advice and help, which helped make our transition even easier. The rest as they say is history and I am writing this review sat back in the house that only a few months ago we saw for the first time and if possible we love it now even more. I will also say that the welcome gift we found on arrival to our new home was such an amazing touch but I won’t spoil it, I guess you’ll just have to find our for yourselves. Good luck in your house hunt...... You’ve already found the right agent...” M.& C, Doonan

EUMUNDI REMEMBERS Wendy Birrell, Eumundi A Remembrance Day community commemoration was held last Saturday under the magnificent Memorial Trees on the edge of the market area. Wreaths were laid at one of the trees by a number of the community groups. Vice Captain Mai Morrissey and School Captain Sebastien Hayes represented Eumundi State School. The old church bell at Discover Eumundi was rung 11 times just before 11am to signal the minute’s silence. Lest We Forget.

From A Recent Seller: “When we bought the house from you nearly 5 years ago we knew you were special and we are so grateful that you have worked your magic for us twice now. You have gone above and beyond and there are no adequate words to describe our appreciation. Knowing it was vacant with limiting furnishings you took along linen and presented the home beautifully. The sale process was a dream with a lovely buyer, content departing tenant and us, extremely happy Sellers. You told us a price, you delivered and we’re happy to shout this from the roof tops….” R & Y, Tewantin

Bird BOY

Photography

Kaya Unel-Cleary, 10 years old, Eumundi

Kaya’s passionate about bird photography and recently he created an e-book of his photography. His mentor, bird photographer Raoul Slater, suggested he take lots and deletes heaps. But Kaya doesn’t use any other technology apart from his camera so he doesn’t edit them. His Mum Arzu thinks his mind will explode with possibilities when he’s old enough to use editing tools! But for now it’s very much an ‘in the moment’ thing.

Why do you like taking photos of birds? I love taking photos of ALL animals but I love birds because they fly - I love their feathers! They talk - they make so many different types of music! They are in every single colour that exists.

Is there an elusive bird? Quail, orange chat, bristle bird, rose-crowned fruit dove, peregrine falcon – so many!

How do you get so close to the birds? Sometimes I sit in a tree or somewhere and just sit - for ages. Eventually they come. Other times I see a bird, and oh so slowly get close by pretending I’m not interested in the bird. So not looking at it directly. Seeing the eyes of an animal scares them away. I make myself small and make slow, small movements.

Yellow Robin

Do you have a few favourite birds? Eastern yellow robin and all the fantails because they sit still for me.

Sport U LT I M AT E F R I S B E E G U Y S G R O W M O ’ S Every week a group of mostly middle aged, former wannabe athletes, along with a few younger guys), meet to play a game that they are clearly too old and out of shape to be playing. This ragged bunch of fellas meet every Wednesday at 4.30pm at the hallowed Eumundi Showgrounds to play what some people say is a young man’s sport - Ultimate Frisbee. Most people have no idea that this is even a sport, but it’s fast becoming more and more popular in schools and universities. People imagine frisbee as just chucking a disc around back and forth to mates, but Ultimate Frisbee has set rules with teams. Imagine mixing elements of NFL, AFL and netball ... weird but it works. Each week we have a run around for about an hour. There is plenty of good humoured sledging, camaraderie and banter.

first started it was a chance for some old has-beens and nevergonna-bes to get out, have a run around and try to be fit. But it’s developed into so much more than that. It’s a chance for a group of blokes to meet up and connect, support one another, have a laugh and enjoy each other’s company. And as muscles are aching and bones creaking, the game always ends with a couple of cold ones and a chat. This month we would like to highlight Movember - an excuse

Better still, invest in your own health and join us on a Wednesday afternoon and play a spot of Frisbee.

Now in its second year, Eumundi Ultimate Frisbee is open to all players over 15yrs and as you can see from the photo, all levels of fitness. When the game

Health T E E N A G E R S A N D A L C O H O L - A N U N H E A LT H Y C O M B I N AT I O N Tania Watson, Eumundi pharmacist At this time of year, the calendar is filled with social engagements and parties. Many teenagers – especially our year 12 school leavers - will spend much of the schoolholiday period celebrating and spending time with their friends. Many of these functions will involve alcohol. An Australian survey in 2013 found that the average age at which young people aged 14 - 24 first tried alcohol is 15. Approximately 86% of Australians 14 years of age and over have drunk alcohol at least once in their lives. Alcohol acts as a central nervous system (CNS) depressant. The effect of alcohol comes from a combination of factors, including the amount of alcohol consumed and various other factors such as age, gender, body size, nutrition, and drinking experience. Alcohol consumption affects not only the person drinking, but everyone in the community. It is estimated that alcohol costs the Australian community over $15

billion a year. These costs relate to health problems, accidents, crime, violence, social issues, and loss of productivity. The Australian Guidelines to Reduce Health Risks from Drinking Alcohol state ‘for children and young people under 18 years of age, not drinking alcohol is the safest option’ and that ‘children under 15 years of age are at the greatest risk of harm from drinking’. These guidelines are based on health risks to teenagers however there are also legal and social risks. For adolescents, drinking alcohol contributes to the three leading causes of death for this age group: unintentional injuries, homicide, and suicide. In addition over 50% of alcoholrelated serious road injuries occur in the 15–24-year-old age bracket. According to the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC), alcohol consumption in teenagers also contributes to physical injuries, irresponsible sexual behaviour, antisocial

behaviour, and poor academic performance. Studies show the earlier alcohol consumption starts, the greater the chance of developing problems with alcohol later in life, and the greater the likelihood of adverse physical and mental health conditions/consequences. Every year, ‘schoolies’ events are covered in the media. Many of the incidents highlight the immediate negative consequences that can occur from binge drinking, such as physical injury from alcoholfuelled violence. Developmental and social issues for the teenager, their peers, and their family can be less obvious as they arise over time.

teenagers through responsible alcohol behaviour and attitudes towards alcohol talking about strategies to deal with peer pressure regarding alcohol discussing alcohol related health issues as well as alcohol laws and the potential consequences for breaking them. It is often said Australians love a drink. We can also show love for our children by helping them to avoid the harm alcohol can cause them when drinking starts at an early age.

Parents, and other significant adults, can positively influence teenagers to make wiser choices regarding alcohol, and help them to reduce their risk of harm from alcohol. These adults can help even if the teenager has already started drinking. Set good examples for your

Living FINDING IT HARD TO WRITE YOUR CV?

Jenny Brice, Eumundi

Most people take on average two hours to write and adjust their CV to a specific job application. To help make this time well spent, consider the following: 70% of CV’s received online are read by an algorithm. The computer scans your CV for key words and specific details. It decides if you are rejected on the first round based on this information and the quality of other candidates. If a human is reading your CV, they take on average, less than a minute to scan your CV looking for key points.

Helpful hints 1. People’s time is short; be specific. • Most people or algorithms do not want a CV longer than two pages unless otherwise specified. • Be clear what the job is asking for. Make sure you include the specific words and skills that are in the job application. If unclear find out if possible. • Although you may have a generic CV, customise it to the specific job. • Get your CV checked for spelling errors. It’s hard to review your own work 2. Sell yourself. • Ask yourself, “Why am I the

best person for the job?” and sell it. • Sometimes you may have selfdoubt. So, does 40% of the population. Put the doubts aside and sell yourself. • The major opportunity to sell yourself is your introductory letter. • Three solid paragraphs can be a good rule of thumb for a routine CV. • Make sure you include key words. • If one is not requested have an introductory paragraph at the beginning of CV. • There is a lot of competition out there, so get on the front foot.

3. Even in the technological age, many jobs are obtained through networks and relationships. • Depending on the job you may want to contact the company to get further information before customising your CV. • Provide referees on request. You may want specific references for different jobs. • You have more contacts than you think. Use them. 4. Additional studies. • In this age when lifelong learning is important demonstrate you are

learning or have learnt something recently. It could be as simple as obtaining a driver’s licence or studying something of interest. 5. Be resilient and manage expectations. Think that you may have to send out 200 CV’s to get the job you want. Getting anything earlier is a bonus. This thinking helps you to maintain your spirits when you don’t get that interview. It happens to everyone. Persistence wins out. jennybrice.com.au

A TA I L O F T W O S WA M P I E S [ PA R T 3 ] Kon & Mos Hepers, Verrierdale Our 10 acre property had about 80% cover of 40 year-old regrowth mixed eucalypt forest with dense understorey ideal for swamp wallabies. Neighbouring properties were similar but larger and we knew that the boys roamed widely and sometimes disappeared for weeks. We found Meggsie on the roadside over a kilometre from home. We ordered him back home and the next morning he was standing outside our door as usual. Despite our house being set back 400 meters from the road we also saw Willie down there. Of course there was constant fear about their safety from cars – cars and dogs. We also frequently heard gun-shots, yet another worry. Some of the local landholders regard all wildlife as vermin. Like many other Wildlife Carers we also had a dog. A border collie trained to ignore furry and feathery critters but her protective instinct let us know when snakes or goannas were near the animals. There is a school of thought that wildlife reared in proximity of dogs will develop a familiarity which could lead to them ignoring that danger from other dogs. We’ve observed that wallabies are smarter than that and can easily distinguish friend from foe.

Our neighbours also had border collies and on the few occasions one came onto our property we thought it was our dog and certainly couldn’t tell the difference at 100 metres, but Meggsie and Willie could instantly! Both swiftly disappeared until the coast was clear. All the surrounding properties had at least one dog and many seemed pretty nasty and certainly not trained. And there were frequent sightings of dingos, feral dogs and foxes. But both wallabies survived in these surrounds by using their wits - a real worry in Meggsie’s case. One day in early 2007 Willie turned up after a few week’s absence. He was barely able to use his right hind leg, but true to his nature proceeded to greet Meggsie with a kiss and a kick. But something was clearly very wrong with his leg. A tricky capture followed by a trip to the vet confirmed that besides a severely arthritic hip joint he also had a badly injured foot, possibly inflicted in a fight with a predator or a barbed wire fence. A small wallaby unable to run is certain to be prey to any number of predators. The vet advised euthanasia. Willie is

now buried in his favourite spot, marked with a Calliandra bush. A spooky thing happened. When we brought home his body we decided to bury him in his favourite little hiding place among the tall grass, where we used to see his little face peeking out. As we approached the place, there was a little face watching us and as we neared, a little swampie identical to Willie hopped off, then turned to watch us. Apart from our two wallabies we had never seen any others on the property. Was Willie somehow saying goodbye? And what of Meggsie? He still came and went, bringing his flat-flies, having a snooze and a drink. He wasn’t pugnacious any more and tolerated us picking ticks off his back. It seemd our back porch was a good place for tummy-scratching and personal grooming. And strangely, he took over from Willie in raiding the Calliandra bushes. In fact, he demolished the one on Willie’s grave. No respect for the dead, our Meggsie. If we ever left a door open when he was around he’d come inside, visit every single room in the house including walk-in wardrobes, then wander out again. Cont’d on pg 22

Outdoors L I V I N G B A C K YA R D Cancer in animals

Kirstie Henning

Kirstie Henning, Animal Nutritionist Dr Sarah Rose

We want to know about you, not just your teeth.

(07) 5442 7556 | eumundidental.com.au |  After hours emergencies: 0428 027 741 Many of our animals will succumb to cancer and the question must be asked: why is this happening and why is it more common nowadays? I have had many chickens with tumours and I have seen dogs, pigs, goats, guinea pigs all present with these deadly bulges. I am no expert in this field so any comments I make in this article are of my own opinion and from research. Elephants are less likely to get cancer and research shows that it’s because they have an abundance of a gene called TP53 which is known to repair damaged DNA. The Science Alert website states that 1 in 20 elephants may get cancer, but a shocking 1 in 5 humans will develop it. Once over the age of 10, around 50% of pet deaths (dogs and cats) is from cancer, according to the American Veterinary Association. My belief is that diet plays a key role in reducing the chances of cancer developing and the rate at which it grows. Sugars such as glucose and fructose are believed to feed cancer cells. In human PET Scans, which are used to detect where cancer has spread, a glucose based liquid is used as it knowingly will accumulate in cancer cells. Many of our diets, and our animal’s diets, contain these two ingredients. A dog’s

natural diet would contain very little sugars and carbohydrates, but when we feed commercial pet food we are forcing them to eat unnatural food items (check your pet food labels). Pesticides are frequently sprayed on our fruit and vegetables and it is only common sense that this could cause issues. A chicken’s diet usually consists of commercial feed with a high percentage of corn, and it is very likely it is Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) corn if it is not organic. I’m sure we have all heard of GMO’s and there are definitely question marks over the longterm effects of these in a diet. Chickens have very short lives, yet I have seen so many with tumours and they develop very rapidly.

songwriting and improvisation at many schools, universities and community groups. “Jess and her band write their own music, compose for theatre and TV, play with other bands and teach. They are the real deal as far as contemporary working musicians in Australia and it will be great for the kids to see that music (and creative arts in general) is an exciting path to follow if it’s the thing they love,” Alice enthused.

And what’s more, he never disgraced himself in the house and never tried to drink out of the toilets. Quite early on he sniffed out which bucket in the garage contains the birdseed but luckily he didn’t figure out how to remove the lid. When we had an in-ground swimming pool installed, Meggsie took on the job of clerk-of-works and every day came to inspect progress. He would signal his satisfaction by adding his footprints on the heaps of sand and road base but if he thought any section was not up to scratch he would mark that with a little pile of droppings. We also thought he’d started being socially active as there seemed to be quite a few different swampies around the place, including females with joeys at foot. Despite that, he started showing signs of wear and tear with plenty of scars on his body and a few notches in his ears.

The Pheno band will work with the SOR students on their big end of year concert on Sunday 3 December and discuss their own approaches to performance. “Seeing how others approach their instruments, or performing, is always inspiring and hopefully it will leave the kids buzzing with energy and ideas for their own show the following weekend,” Alice shared. Pheno’s music has layers of shimmering vocals, scorching electric guitars, synthesisers, and stomping backbeats. Pheno is influenced by artists such as Tune-Yards and St Vincent, there’s also a huge nod to 80’s heroes David Bowie and Talking Heads.

Pheno will be performing Saturday 25 November at the Imperial Hotel, Eumundi, 6.30pm. Pre-sale $10 ($15 door). pheno.com.au or 5442 8811.

Then came a day of tragedy ...

Eumundi School of Rock will be performing their end of year concert on Sunday 3 December, Eumundi School of Arts, 3-6pm. Facebook: Eumundi School of Rock.

We turned out of our driveway and a little way along the road lay a dead wallaby. Although we don’t want to see any wildlife get hurt, we hoped and prayed

this wasn’t our Meggsie. So, we had to look and sure enough it was a big, ginger-coloured male without a white tail tip. It was bad enough losing Willie, and now Meggsie too. We wrapped him in a blanket and buried him next to his brother. For a couple of days we mourned our little pal. But …on the morning of the third day, there was Meggsie at our back door, casing the joint for any stray birdseed or sweet potato. Impossible – Meggsie was dead and buried! We raced down to his grave to see if something supernatural might have occurred, but no, it was still intact with no angels hanging around. Meggsie was certainly very much alive and well, still bringing his ticks and flat-flies when he visited every few days. Hopefully he’ll be around for a while yet. We still miss Willie and wonder ... does Meggsie ever miss his bro? Post script: On Friday 5 March 2010 Meggsie turned up as usual, lounged around for a while, then hopped into the bush. We have not seen him again since ...
