Notes Every year our hinterland community celebrates Australia Day with BBQs, gatherings, a day at the beach, a lazy day. We can wake up and be grateful to live here. Every year Eumundi holds a lovely award ceremony that recognises some of the volunteers who enhance this community. It’s a really special event where the community says to them, “Thank you – you make our region better.” But along with many others, I find myself struggling with 26 January as the date to celebrate our wonderful volunteers, quality of life, and National pride. Why choose the day the British ships arrived in Sydney? I’d like to see Eumundi embrace a day that’s inclusive to the blow-ins and the people who have Australia running through their veins. Maybe we could have a Eumundi Bunya Day? Bunya harvests were celebrated by our hinterland’s first locals with festivals and gatherings featuring song, dance, feastings and storytelling… sounds pretty good to me. I’m keen to hear your thoughts too. SACHA HAMILTON-MACL AREN editor@eumundigreen.com.au PO Box 482, Eumundi 4562

Eumundi - Home of Busking Brilliance | In association with the Eumundi Chamber of Commerce, we are looking to make 2018 the year of the busker - as we further animate Memorial Drive on market days. We have Council permits for nine prime locations - from Caplick Park at the north, south to Gridley St. and we see great opportunity for busking across all genres to add further sparkle to our town’s lustrous history as an incubator, and celebrator of the arts. We seek applications from musicians, poets, actors, mime artists, circus performers, magicians and all other street performers. There is no charge to performers... and history proves - buskers, if your crowd engagement and “stagecraft”is good - you will make good earnings from your audience. Community NBN TOWERS SITE FOR SORE EYES? With many locals in the 4562 region working from home, the streaming of home entertainment being the new norm and up-to-the-second news expected, the need for faster internet download speeds is an issue for locals. But a group of concerned local residents has questioned the need for NBN towers to be erected, especially in such close proximity to homes and businesses. NBN co limited (NBN) is proposing NBN Aurecon Australasia upgrade the current 4562 NBN network with three new telecommunications facilities at Verrierdale Hall, Verrierdale; 811 Eumundi Rd, Doonan and 22 Wills Rd, Lake Weyba. This region has a population of 4,472 – the largest group in the 4562 area. Two sites are owned by Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) with the land owner of the Doonan site giving consent. NBN states in the SCC Planning Reports regarding the three sites that using fixed wireless and satellite technologies will result in improved, higher speed services. This service
uses antennae fixed on homes and businesses pointed at large, fixed wireless facilities. The facilities include a 40m (50m at Lake Weyba) monopole (20 metres above surrounding vegetation) with four antennae and radio units attached, plus outdoor cabinets for equipment at ground level. The planning reports state this component of this network requires a fixed wireless transmission site to provide wireless internet coverage to Verrierdale, Doonan and Weyba. NBN regards the three proposed telecommunications facilities as Impact Assessable under the 2014 SSC Planning Scheme and 2016 Queensland Planning Act. Hence, planning approval is required from local Council. Doonan residents have banded together to lobby SCC to reject the proposed tower on Eumundi Rd, opposite Sunspace Café. Spokesperson for the group, Sophia Conley, explained the NBN had initially promised an optic fibre, underground solution. “Yet we, as are many small communities within this
region, are being offered a substandard, risky solution that has not been tested over the long term to ensure the ongoing health of the community the towers service,” she stated. The residents group also questions the appropriateness of the tower at the proposed Doonan location, sure it will impact on the character associated with the hinterland – that of a renowned tourist destination famous for its biosphere efforts. “This visual impact, which would be the same as building a fourteen storey

Well I hope everyone had a fantastic, safe and healthy Christmas and New Year. Things certainly got heated on the Sunshine Coast just before the festive break on the issue of verge parking. One of the points of contention centred on ‘two wheels up, two wheels down’ parking in suburbs where there are narrow streets - which have been approved under the Urban Development Institute of Australia (UDIA) guildlines and also Council’s Planning Scheme. While Council’s actions in fining vehicles parked in this manner have been heavily criticised, it’s important to understand that if we didn’t have these laws, it would allow this type of parking to occur in every street right across the Sunshine Coast. There would be nothing to stop your next door neighbour, the person across the street or visitors from anywhere from parking their car or truck on your nature strip, right in front of your house. Can you imagine the potential anger this would create among local residents especially if there’s extremely wet weather and you’re pedantic about your lawn. The other important factor in all this is that Council is

Local resident Patrick concurred, “Impact upon local flora and fauna is untested, and the inferior line of site technology will not reach houses such as mine, located over a couple of hills, so I think it would be better elsewhere where the potential environmental and social impact is minimised.”

Sophia explained she too needs faster internet for her design firm, but wants NBN to deliver on its initial promise of underground fibre optics. “The letters sent to our houses explain this isn’t cable and you need a direct line of sight to the dish to get access - so who is that going to help? Doonan, Verrierdale, Weyba and Eumundi are surrounded by trees!”

complaint-driven when it comes to regulating parking in residential areas. In other words, we don’t actively roam the suburbs looking for illegally parked cars. If you see us issuing warnings or fines, it’s because we’ve received a complaint from the community and we’re acting on that complaint. Vehicles parked in an unsafe situation, well that is another matter. If you park on a marked yellow line, across someone’s driveway or are impeding pedestrian movement, you can expect a fine in the first instance. Whilst I don’t necessarily agree with slapping fines on cars which are parked on their driveways a miniscule distance beyond their boundary, it’s very important to remember that the verge area beyond our property lines is where important infrastructure and utilities are installed. The area also provides pedestrian access and so it needs to be unobstructed and able to be traversed in a safe manner. I trust I have provided some clarity on this issue however if you are still in doubt, I urge you to check the local parking regulations which are clearly laid out on Council’s website.

I hope everyone had a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Year. Eumundi Police had a fairly busy period. There were two separate traffic crashes in the Eumundi division which left motorists and pedestrians with injuries over the Christmas period. One on Eumundi Noosa Rd, Doonan and one on Albert St, Eumundi. Four people driving within the division were charged with driving their motor vehicles whilst unlicensed. At some time between the 15 and 25 December 2017, a Doonan school was broken into and property damaged. If anyone has information in relation to this matter, please contact police or crime stoppers. Over the break a Doonan business was broken into and a quantity of tools and machinery were stolen. If anyone has information in relation to this matter, please contact police or crime stoppers. On 15 January the driver of a vehicle intercepted by police on Eumundi Noosa
Rd, Doonan was found to be driving whilst under the influence of a dangerous drug. The 37 year old Cooroy man has been charged and will face the Noosa Magistrates court. On the 27 December 2017 police intercepted a vehicle on Eumundi Noosa Rd Doonan, and located illegal drug paraphernalia. A 20 year old Cootharaba man will face charges in relation to that and other traffic related matters at Noosa Heads Magistrates Court. A vehicle was intercepted on Eumundi Noosa Road, Doonan on 30 December and police located a quantity of methylamphetamine, Ecstasy and drug utensils. A 20 year old Gympie man will face charges in relation to this matter in Noosa Heads Magistrates Court this month. On another note, we are now back to regular office hours. Arts MANY SIDES OF AN ARTIST
Wendy Birrell, Eumundi
Local artist Alan Pirie’s latest collection of artwork entitled Different Sides, is currently on display at Wan’din’in arts space (behind Discover Eumundi Heritage Centre). It’s an exhibition of diverse styles including abstract, landscape and realism. Alan’s beautifully executed drawings have a strength that almost demands them to be studied in detail for their lifelike qualities and fineness. Mostly self taught Alan sees himself as having been given a natural artistic gift and as a child found pleasure in drawing at every opportunity. In sharp contrast, Alan’s evocative oil paintings are created in a surrealist style using a very strong pallet that shows his skill and confidence in this medium.
Having spent his early life in Scotland and Germany, Alan moved to New Zealand in 1994. It was in his new homeland in ‘99 that he found a new direction, inspired by the vibrant colours of New Zealand. Of his most recent work he says, “I allow my intuition to guide me on my journey on the canvas with
colour and movement the things that excite me.” Alan believes, “Often pieces are like mysterious journeys for the observer to interpret for themselves.” Alan moved to the Sunshine Coast in 2012 and was a finalist in the Noosa Regional Gallery’s 2017 Lyn McCrea Memorial Drawing Prize at the Noosa Regional Gallery. Wan’din’in is at the rear of Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor at 73 Memorial Dr. Exhibition runs until Sun 11 Feb.

Jan O’Halloran, North Arm
I have been volunteering for Riding For the Disabled (RDA) on the Sunshine Coast since 2003, but my RDA journey began back in 1990 in Hong Kong. My husband had moved there for work and I had no job opportunities in Hong Kong so I looked for something worthwhile to do. I saw an advert on a noticeboard and thought this would be great as it combined my experience as a teacher with my huge love of horses. My first contact with the RDA Hong Kong coordinator was a little disconcerting. I thought I’d be helping children, but the reality was that she needed help with mentally and physically challenged adults - mostly men and all Chinese! I went along anyway, my heart beating madly, wondering what I’d got myself into and if this was really what I wanted to do. Well, that first day was just so magical. I laughed and had so much fun - despite the language barrier. And one of my defining RDA moments happened while I was volunteering with the Hong Kong charity. The regular group of men came along and I was watching them get ready with helmets, name badges etc. One young gentleman was fussing around making sure everyone was organised. I made a passing comment to the carer that it must be great having someone so helpful around. Their response shocked me. The carer said, “This is the only time that young man comes alive. For the rest of the week he is curled in a ball in a corner.” I was almost in
tears hearing this and wished he could come to RDA every day! I ended up staying with RDA in Hong Kong for five years before we moved back to Australia. Even today volunteering with RDA on the Sunshine Coast, I hear stories from parents who say that the horse riding sessions allow their children to sleep at night - which means parents can sleep too. But when RDA is on holidays, no sleeping children means no sleep for parents either. Our families count down to the number of sleeps before they can come riding again. So many people can benefit from RDA sessions. We have seven different programs
to meet the needs of our community and operate five days a week. RDA caters for those who are challenged physically, intellectually, psychologically, with autism spectrum disorder, anxiety, and social issues. Physically challenged children can benefit from improvement in balance, core strength, co-ordination and muscle relaxation - which eventually flows through to improvement in quality of life. Volunteer roles at RDA in North Arm are very diverse, ranging from: assisting with the riders to make their ride safe; helping prepare and lead horses in sessions; administration; ground maintenance; IT; public relations; grant writing; minutes secretary; Bunnings BBQ volunteers; secondhand saddlery shop volunteers; catering; filing; data entry; housekeeping and cleaning - the list goes on. Just about anything you’d like to do can be found wanting at Sunshine Coast RDA! If you’re interested in volunteering please email me at admin@scrda.org.au.

Landholder Environment Grants
Tree Spirit is the latest public sculpture to be revealed in Eumundi. Created by artisan wood carver Shane Christensen as part of the Tree Place Project (which exhibited at Wan’din’in arts space over summer) celebrates the universal connection of people and the tree spirits that bring this ancient log to life. Native bee expert Tim Heard from Sugar Bag Bees will be installing a box hive of Native Stingless Bees into the sculpture on Thursday 1 February, 2-4pm, with bees coming and going through a hole in the mouth of the Tree Spirit. Shane, an accomplished chain saw carver, has achieved incredible detail allowing the nature and stories to emerge from the wood. Tree Spirit is carved from one of the large logs from the original Tree Place tree, salvaged in 2015 by Anne Harris, and uses the universal connection of people and the tree spirits to bring this ancient log to life. Private rural landholders are invited to apply for a Landholder Environment Grant to assist with environmental works on their properties.
Priority will be given to projects with high ecological value and that have good landowner co-contribution. Visit council’s website for guidelines and to submit an expression of interest (EOI) online. Expressions of interest close midnight Monday 26 February 2018. Note: An EOI must be submitted if you wish to apply for a grant.

There’s a family reunion happening at our place. The Queensland branch of the fantail clan (genus Rhipidura) has come together. Everybody is familiar with the Willie Wagtail - we have one on our property who acts as the gardening overseer (Because his name is Willie we assume he is a male but he is also misnamed and should be called Willie Fantail. Wagtails are a different family of birds altogether). Whatever the name, he follows us around, chatters continuously and picks off any insects we disturb but he also makes jerky little movements and flutters his fanned-out tail to flush insects from the lawn. His favourite activity is lawn mowing – he virtually hitches a ride on our noisy ride-on. Willie Wagtail, Rhipidura leucophris (meaning Whitebrowed Fantail) is here most of the year, except for a period over summer when a pair of breeding Forest Kingfishers relentlessly attacks him so he makes himself scarce. On the very day the migratory kingfishers leave, Willie is back, mostly solitary, but occasionally with a mate. This is possibly the most ubiquitous bird species in Australia, occurring all over the mainland and parts of Tasmania. We have seen them as far west as our central deserts. Where Willie is not shy and stays mainly in the open, Cousin Rufous Fantail is timid and cryptic and never holds still for one second. We have one or two on our property year-round and catch glimpses of the birds mainly in the bracken fern and low shrubs or on the ground on our bush tracks. When they do get on a large tree they hop up the trunk, spiralling round and round, all the time fanning out their beautiful russet tails. We have never managed an in-focus photograph. Its zoological name, Rhipidura rufifrons means, ‘fantail with a red forehead.’ Two days ago the third of the cousins, the Grey Fantail, Rhipidura fuliginosa (meaning Sooty-coloured Fantail) flew

This species is more aerial than the other two and rarely seen on the ground. About the same size as the Rufous (Willie is a bit bigger); the Grey makes fluttering forays from low branches to catch insects mid-air. It is not put off by our presence and is in fact very much in-your-face, fanning its tail almost within arm’s length of us. This species also is found in most of the mainland and Tasmania. Australia has five species of fantails, three of them represented in Queensland with a fourth just marginally. All are insectivorous yet they don’t seem to compete for a food source probably because they have different habitats. They breed between August and February. All lay two to four eggs. Where Willie’s nest is bowl-shaped, often placed on a branch overhanging water, the Rufous and Grey construct a delicate nest shaped like a stemmed wine glass. We have never found a nest from any of them on our place though it is very likely that the Rufous does nest here but manages to conceal it well in the dense understorey. In a few weeks the cousins Rhipidura will have dispersed to follow their own lifestyles and will hopefully return for another reunion. 17

Sequel of the Willie Wag-’TALE’ - Yes, they were sitting on eggs [The Green, Issue 284] and subsequently two healthy babies hatched. The parents worked tirelessly to feed and protect their babies, sometimes fending off reptiles and other birds. Eventually the babies were big enough to fly the coop. Another year, another happy ending. Babette Urban, Eumundi
