The area known as The Terraces provides the foundation for the continued success for the EDCA Wednesday and OEM Saturday markets in this sylvan corridor amongst trees and birdlife. Designed by Guymer Bailey Architects and built by local builder Toobella Homes, we are proud of this beautiful addition to the Eumundi community amenity. And, we are looking for a Maintenance Contractor to look after this lovely green space - keeping its gardens, lawns and delightful landscaping up to scratch. Community DOONAN BRIDGE UPGRADE CONCERNS A number of locals have expressed concern about the Sunshine Coast Council (SCC) upgrade of Doonan Bridge Rd, Verrierdale, from a gravel road to a sealed road. But the Verrierdale Residents Group are concerned about the 100km speed limit and lack of safety barriers along this stretch of road – which many locals use as a short cut from Eumundi to Peregian Springs. The group are calling for a 70km speed limit along the stretch of road. Division 9 Councillor Steve Robinson has met with concerned locals on a number of occasions to discuss design options and a road safety audit by independent and accredited road engineering consultants. “While project delays have occurred undertaking these reviews, changes considered safe and appropriate by both independent and council engineers and designers have been made to alter design elements as requested by Verrierdale residents,” Cr Robinson explained. “These changes include

CONCERT FOR CHARITY

minimising the depth of a drain designed to help alleviate nearby property flooding. “Additional features such as safety guidance signage will also be added to help alleviate residents’ concerns,” Cr Rogerson said. Cr Robinson explained the speed limits were not set by council but by a Speed Advisory Committee, which includes QPS, TMR. “However, council has advised residents their preferred speed of 70km/hr will be referred to this committee for consideration.” As part of SCC 10 year capital works program, a number of gravel roads are identified on a priority basis for sealing each financial year. SCC believe the upgrade necessary to provide marked road lanes, increased visibility, reduce dust and reduce maintenance costs. Stages one and three have been completed. Stage Two construction of drainage structures is currently underway with completion scheduled for May 2018. Doonan Bridge Rd will be sealed between Arcoona Rd and Verrierdale Rd.

Doonan Bridge Rd project includes: • widening and sealing Doonan Bridge Rd, Verrierdale, to an 8m sealed road which will include a 3m traffic lane and 1m shoulder in each direction • 2m gravel shoulder on both sides of the road for recreational road users (horse riding, cyclist and pedestrians) • upgrading existing and installation of new drainage structures including pipes and culverts • upgrading table drains and placement of rock scour protection improving visibility for road users SCC Project Officer 5475 7272. sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/ Council/Planning-and-Projects

Community PA R K E X T E N S I O N S E T T O C O M M E N C E Experience Eumundi general manager Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher announced last week that the second stage of the Dick Caplick Park project would finally commence later this month and be completed by late April – weather permitting. “Dick Caplick Park playground is already one of the best on the Coast and this further stage will make it an even greater place for kids and families for our community and visitors.” “We thank Councillor Rogerson and Sunshine Coast Council for this new and significant investment in our town,” Mr Wynne-Hoelscher said. The development will include a new shelter, seating, BBQ, pathways, landscaping and new play rope structure. Stage one of the park upgrade was completed in 2015 and saw the upgrade of the well-used play equipment, paths and landscaping including Rickety Bridge, but incurred the loss of a slide (favoured by toddlers), BBQ area (used regularly for kid’s party’s and community

gatherings) and no equipment for older children, which had locals miffed. The park is one of the busiest on the Sunshine Coast due to the large volume of market visitors the village has twice a week, so the extension is much needed. Cr Rogerson, who greenlighted the division 10 project through Sunshine Coast Council, said, “Dick Caplick Park is one of Eumundi’s favourite parks and playgrounds and this second stage of upgrades will make it even more enjoyable for visitors of all ages. Upcoming improvements will include... some fantastic additions to the playground which I’m certain youngsters will absolutely love!” Due to a delay in the delivery of the play equipment the works will be starting later than previously hoped. A project sign will be erected as of next week advising the community of these works and the timing.

Arts EMMA NANCARROW

Hinterla nd Painters

Amy Clarke, Eumundi

They say that if you want to figure out what your calling is you should remember what you loved to do as a child. From a very young age, local artist Emma Nancarrow attended art lessons and workshops. As a kid, she was constantly drawing and painting. With her children now at a more manageable age she has returned to her passion. Emma can turn her hand to abstract, floral, animal, still life and landscape and her bright, whimsical canvases are proving very popular. A thriving arts business has been born. Recently, I took a visit to Emma’s stunning rammed earth home and studio situated on scenic acreage in Tinbeerwah. This modern but earthy environment includes an impressive orchard, veggie patch, chook yard and native garden. These surrounds have a strong influence on her art and she admits to being obsessed with architecture and homewares of all sorts! “I subscribe to pretty much every possible Home magazine available and am always shuffling furniture, artwork and decorative pieces around, so I guess a lot of the time I am painting pieces that I think would work well in my own home” Emma shared. Emma’s work has proved to be very popular with interior designers who often recommend her paintings to clients. She has just completed a series of large scale works for a designer who is fitting out a beachfront home and Emma says she needs to get back to work to replenish stock – not a bad problem to have!

Emma shared that she knows so many artists, potters, sculptors and weavers hiding amongst the hills around Eumundi. “They are all incredibly talented and are thriving, living and working from here - it’s is an exciting time to be an artist.” Twenty years ago, Emma doesn’t think this lifestyle would’ve been possible. “It would’ve been very difficult to make a living from art outside of the city, but with the use of digital platforms, I think you can live just about anywhere now,” shared Emma. This part of the world is home for Emma. “I grew up on a farm at Tinbeerwah. I was also horse mad and spent countless hours riding and training at the Eumundi Pony Club,” she shared. I feel very blessed to be able to work here and bring my children up here.”

Emma’s studio is open by appointment on 0412 075 677. Her decorative paintings are also available from Bedouin Traders in Peregian and Art Nuvo in Buderim. She’s also had considerable success online and regularly ships her canvases to clients who have found her through her website noosaartists.com.au. 8

Kids MANAGING WEB CONTENT FOR KIDS

WHILE WE LIVE WE GROW

Helping kids to stay safe online is a major concern for many parents. Knowing about potential risks and how to deal with them, can help you to manage your children’s online time. Parental control tools help parents monitor and limit what their children do online. Parental controls are available for most devices, either through pre-installed settings that can be activated yourself on a device, or via the installation of free or commercial software. There are many tools available and they all offer different functions, with some even allowing parents to limit the time children spend on specific websites or games. No tool is 100% effective at blocking access to inappropriate content. They are a good tool to encourage communication with children about their online activities. Currently there are more effective tools for use with PCs and Macs than with

Health Cont’d from pg 10 It is important to understand the nature of devices that children are using, and also talk to them about staying safe online and being aware of the behaviours of themselves and others. Parental control tools tend to be better at blocking ‘adult’ or sexual content than other types of harmful content, such as content that may promote self-harm, eating disorders, violence, drugs, gambling, racism and terrorism. Parental control tools have difficulty filtering content within social media sites and messaging services, including video messaging services like Skype.

Adam Woodhams, Weyba Downs

One thing people quickly discover about this beautiful hinterland region is that it’s full of hidden treasures. My home at Weyba Downs on the shores of the sublime Lake Weyba, is one of those unique places that make our area so special. Driving down Eumarella Rd to Lake Weyba for a picnic, a paddle, or a spot of kitesurfing, you’d be forgiven for assuming that the area was only cultivated 30 or so years ago; but it actually has a unique history dating back to the 1890s. One particular stratum of Weyba Down’s history is fascinating - perhaps even bordering on the bizarre. In the late 19th century there were great concerns around the impacts on society created by increasing urbanisation, capitalism and mechanisation replacing workers. From this grew great interest in the concept of Utopian Societies and the relatively new idea of Socialism entered the mainstream as a way of life rather than as a political ideology. This led to the establishment of cooperative communities – communes - that were government sanctioned and financially supported. One such commune was set-up at Weyba Downs. In early 1894 the Woolloongabba Exemplars Commune was established on the western side of Lake Weyba. George Watson, a deeply religious former Commissioner of Crown lands and Surveying with the Queensland Department of Public Lands, was the leader of the more than 200 commune settlers. These settlers ranged from skilled trades, to what amounted to economic refugees, as Queensland was in a perilous financial position at the time. They started their new township by building their homes mainly along today’s Lake Weyba Dr. The area of land provided for the commune was quite enormous, 9,700 acres (around 4,000 hectares). It was roughly bounded by the ocean side of the Lake in the east, extended to just above Peregian Springs and well into Verrierdale in the south, stopped around 2km short of Eumundi in the west and ended at the far northern edge of today’s Doonan along the exact line where the main electricity supply lines now run. The plan was simple – build a self-sufficient commune that observed seven Utopian principles developed by Watson. Fish would be pulled from the lake, crops and fruit would be grown and cattle run in the more fertile hills of Doonan. In

no time, homes and amenity buildings were constructed, roads were opened up, wells were dug and an 18m jetty was built for easy access to Lake Weyba and Noosa River. Reports on the performance of the commune seemed to vary dramatically. A visitor in mid 1894 described a very successful and productive settlement with its own small school. George Watson optimistically declared that the land would be capable of growing, “millions of pineapples.” One government visitor suggested success would be assured by adding a tram line from Eumundi to Noosa Heads but the most telling comment was recorded in State Government Hansard Records of October 1894 when the Land Commissioner said, “I am of the opinion that this group will not be self-supporting, and that it will dwindle down to a few.” The latter observation turned out to be the most astute. Shallow wells quickly ran dry, transport proved difficult, factions developed within the group, tensions ran high and arguments were rife. In early 1895 it all came to a bloody climax with a number of communards finding themselves in Tewantin Police Court after a violent brawl. From this point onwards the already reduced numbers dwindled further. In late 1895 the Government withdrew support and cancelled leases with only four of the original 4,000 hectares ever being cultivated. With the stroke of a pen, the bold socialist experiment that was the Woolloongabba Exemplars Commune officially ceased to exist in January 1896. The most accurate plan of the commune is from a survey conducted in mid-1896 showing the location of some of the original homes and the alignment of the road we know today as Eumarella Rd. All that’s left today, beyond boundaries and road 14

Outdoors FROG SEASON

Amber Grimley, Eumundi

It’s frog season and I was lucky enough to go “frogging” in Eerwah Vale recently with the team at Maroochy Waterwatch. Unfortunately, it was quite a dry night and we only saw Eastern Sedge Frogs and Cane Toads. But now that we’ve had some great rain I’m sure the froggies will be out and about now. Monitoring will continue through to March at various sites on the Sunshine Coast in the Maroochy catchment. If you live in the Mary River catchment and are interested in becoming a citizen scientist, The Mary River Catchment

Coordinating Committee (MRCCC) invites you to join their “Find a Frog in February” program. If you see a frog, please don’t touch it! But get a photo if you can and try and identify it. Who knows it could be one of our threatened frogs, like the Giant Barred Frog who is as big as a cane toad and a similar colour (but so much lovelier). Frogs are a good indicator of an ecosystems health, so if you have frogs around then you must have healthy land. Riddip!

Help Find a Frog this February. Help is Photo: Kon Hepers needed to find where our frogs are living in and around: Noosa, Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Gympie and the Fraser Coast. You don’t need to be able to identify frogs, just record observations, take photos and/or record their calls. Record sheets available from mrccc.org.au/find-a-frog-in-februarycitizen-science or facebook.com/MaryRiverCCC.

N atu re N otes LOCAL VENOMOUS SNAKES Do NOT handle snakes unless properly trained, even baby ones! We’ve all heard the story: “A friend of mine got chased by a King Brown.” Scary stuff! But is it true? There are two problems with this tale... Firstly, snakes do not chase people. Some snakes will vehemently defend themselves, and this can be misinterpreted as chasing. For example, a snake might lunge at you if you get too close, it might see you as a tree or other safe object to hide behind or climb, or you might be blocking its only avenue of escape, in which case it’s going to try to get past you. I’ve been observing and catching snakes for over 20 years and I’ve never seen chasing behaviour. In any case, even the fastest of snakes is easily outrun over a reasonable distance. Although very quick at striking, in a 100m race they’ll have barely left the starting line when you finish.

Nathan Bignell, Belli Park

Coast. They get big—growing up to 2m—and they’re responsible for the majority of deaths by snake bite in Australia by a significant margin, mainly because they’re so common. While they’re usually plain brown, their colour and patterning can vary greatly which sometimes makes them hard to identify. They look very similar to Taipans (which are virtually non-existent on the Sunshine Coast). Red-bellied Black Snakes are also common, and prefer wet areas such as creeks and dams. They’re very placid and shy snakes, only biting under severe molestation, and nobody has died from a bite since anti-venom was developed. You might expect that their vibrant red and black colouring is unique, but some other snakes— such as the Small-eyed Snake and Golden Crowned Snake—look very similar when small.

Secondly, King Browns, also known as Mulga Snakes, are one of Australia’s most widelydistributed snakes, but they don’t live on the Sunshine Coast. So, if this happened down the road at a mate’s hinterland property, it probably wasn’t a King Brown.

Rough-scaled Snakes also prefer moist areas, but can be found in pastures and even suburban areas. There is one known death from this species. They look very similar to the harmless and more common Keelback, and live in similar environments. They are usually brown in colour with black flecks or bands, but again, can vary greatly in colour. They grow up to 1m.

Which dangerous venomous snakes can you expect to find in our area? You might be surprised to learn there are really only three that you’re likely to encounter during the day.

There are other species of dangerous venomous snakes on the Sunshine Coast, but they are either very uncommon or rarely seen due to preferred habitat or behaviour.

The Eastern Brown is by far the most commonlyencountered dangerous venomous snake on the Sunshine

Tiger Snakes, for example, are now rare, only seen in small pockets on the southern end of the coast. Others, such as the Small-eyed Snake or Pale-headed Snake, are nocturnal, so although quite common they are not often seen. Still others, such as the Stephens’ Banded Snake, prefer rainforest habitats so are rarely encountered by humans.

I’d like to emphasise that almost all snakes can be hard to identify. If you see a snake, the best option is always to leave it alone, but if you feel it’s a danger to you, your kids or your pets, then call a professional snake catcher to come and remove it. While you’re waiting though, you can feel safe in the knowledge that the snake is not going to chase you!

Cont’d from pg 7 As a young man he worked in the mines, served his country in the Royal Army in Malaya and Borneo in the late 50’s. He and his brother, Alexander ‘Sandy’ Muir, moved to Australia and have resided together since 1970. They worked in forestry, dug worms on the beach at Wynnum Manly, for years selling their produce to fishermen and traders. Harry and Sandy then moved to the Sunshine Coast hinterland and could be seen daily riding their bikes from Verrierdale to Eumundi. Since moving into Eumundi, the brothers gave up riding and could be seen walking together almost all day - every day. Harry was privately cremated and his wishes were to be scattered in the local national park. Sandy will still be seen walking and talking his way around town. Get to know Sandy, he has a great history, including his service to his country during the Middle East conflicts in the 1950’s whilst in the Royal Marines. A community help programme has been set up to get Sandy settled, contact Bob Ward on 0412715461 or Sam at the Eumundi Pharmacy for further info and to help keep the Muir presence in our district. VA L E D O U G A N D R E A S S E N 9 J U N E 1 9 3 4 – 2 6 J A N U A RY 2 0 1 8 One of Eumundi’s favourite buskers Doug Andreassen passed away on Australia Day. A true local, as a child Doug attended schools at Bollier, Carters Ridge, finishing at Imbil State School, travelling to school on the back of his trusty steed. Doug always wanted to learn the guitar. He would steal one of his mother’s saucepans, tie some strings across the pot and strum away, until one day he found a book on the side of the road with a picture of Tex Morton and a guitar with the words: “Learn to play in 5 easy lessons… for just 10 shillings ($1).” On seeing the “Tex Morton Guitar” it was love at first sight. His father told him that he would have to work for it, and so, he did. He picked corn, milked cows, anything to earn some cash and finally, he had that guitar. Doug would ride his pushy 11km to Imbil for lessons. Doug married Kathleen Brown in 1959 and share-farmed for his uncle Jake Andreassen on a dairy farm at Happy Jack Creek. Doug joked that he started with nothing… did okay until the drought of 1968 and then walked away with nothing. Moving to Cooroy in 1979, Doug worked until retirement at the 4 Square supermarket always ready with a joke or tall tale. Throughout the years, Doug’s love for country music grew and grew. He wrote several hundred songs over the years including “The Party at the Local Hotel” which was recorded by Chad Morgan. His sense of humour shone through and was reflected in some of the songs he wrote and performed, his most well-known song, Stop Feeding That Dog Food To Me would conclude

with him tucking into a can of Pal. In the early 80’s Doug began busking at the Eumundi Doug (left) with his great Markets, soon musical mate Ellis. becoming a well-known fixture. He would sing, talk, sing some more and tell jokes every Saturday. Then it became Wednesdays as well. Several years ago, Doug teamed up with a very good mate Ellis Minter. This proved to be a great partnership… good mates who made good music together, while having a good time. In 2003, Doug married Joyce Denning. His family increased to 32 grandchildren and 57 great grandchildren. A deserved tribute to Doug was aired on ABC Radio’s Macca’s Australia All Over for his contribution to country music. He was always ready with joke, a big heart and a warm smile… not forgetting that farm yard yodel! We were proud to have him make such an enduring impact on the Eumundi community and countless markets visitors over many years. As well, in recent times entertaining many a grey nomad (not to mention numerous gap year 20 somethings) at Eumundi’s RV Stopover Bush Ballads and BBQ since it opened in 2014. Doug will be sorely missed by all who crossed his path.
