Notes Editorโs note ... Over the last fortnight Iโve been hanging out with some talented kids at Eumundi State School who love writing. The Ignite English students, who range in age from seven to 11 (grades three to six), have been writing for the Green for about five years now, and Iโve recently given them their assignment topics for this year. The grade three and fourโs assignment will encourage the children to paint a picture - a memory about what makes the hinterland special to them โ by using descriptive words. The grade five and six students have been asked to hone their interviewing skills by finding someone in their community who has an interesting story or job. The older students had the opportunity to hear from one of the best news journalist on the Sunshine Coast. ABC Radioโs Bruce Atkinson shared his extensive knowledge and experience with the kids and gave some invaluable interviewing tips for their Green assignments. Giving our younger locals the opportunity to show off their literary talents to their community is invaluable - and you never forget that first time you see your name in print. Being congratulated for writing efforts by family and friends, can help to build a sense of personal pride. The kids can also see that loving words and writing can give you any number of career paths โ journalism, creative writing, copy writing, editing, proofing, and design being just a few. I canโt wait to share their stories with you. Their ideas are awesome!

It was great to attend the recent Eumundi Chamber of Commerce Business Breakfast, which was held at Eats Restaurant. Firstly, Iโd like to congratulate the new owners of Eats whoโve really given the establishment a fresh new look and feel. You could really feel the new energy and vibrancy in the place and the food was terrific as well.As for the meeting itself, one of the many important topics discussed was how we could help the Chamber generate some additional income from the two weekly Eumundi Market days. Although itโs a bit early to reveal any details, Iโm pretty confident weโre onto something which can provide some real benefit for the Chamber and ultimately the terrific town of Eumundi. ANZAC Day Unfortunately, I was unable to attend this yearโs service in Eumundi but the service I attended later on in the day incorporating Yandina and Eumundi RSL Sub Branches was absolutely outstanding. Of particular note were the words from guest speaker Duncan Buchanan who paid tribute

to the ANZAC spirit and also declared we should carry that spirit with us not just on ANZAC Day but every day of the year. Wearable Art Festival On the back of the highly successful Wearable Art competition that was held during last yearโs Horizon Festival, the Australian Wearable Art Festival is coming to Eumundi on Friday 24 May! Janet Millington, Eumundi Queensland Country Womenโs Association is helping to garner government support for the awareness and treatment of Q fever or Query Fever, with the Eumundi branch also taking up the cause. Q fever is caused by the bacterium Coxiella burnetii, and particularly prevalent in animal agriculture industries. The bacteria favours dry, dusty conditions and can be spread to humans from; cattle, sheep, goats, kangaroos, plus a range of other domestic and wild animals. The bacteria is also found in ticks. Symptoms can range from a slight flu-like illness to severe conditions such as hepatitis or pneumonia. A safe and effective vaccine is available. Q fever is found in all countries except New Zealand. In Australia, several hundred cases are reported annually. The continued drought is fuelling concerns the spread of the disease may increase. At the recent Associated
Country Women of the World Conference, it was moved for organisations to advocate to local governments for increased funding to: โข Educate medical practitioners and alert communities about the identification, treatment, and prevention โข Implement a scheme to subsidise vaccination programs to prevent Q fever in high risk areas Eumundi QCWA President, Flo Saunders, said, โAs an active community of women who, together, improve the lives of people living in regional, rural and remote Queensland, QCWA is well placed to promote Q fever awareness. QCWA is the stateโs most widespread and largest womenโs group, with over 3,800 members across 240 locations. For fact sheets about Q fever go to qld.gov.au/health. For how you can help contact QCWA State Office or 0402 062 465.

Community BENCH UNVEILING
C WA W O M E N WA L K F O R WAT E R
At the recent Thai New Year celebration the Sunshine Coast Thai Community Association recently donated a new bench seat to Dick Caplick Park. Councillor Rogerson, Jang Etheridge from Sala Thai and Wendy Birrell from Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre, officially unveiled the addition to Eumundiโs most popular public space. Cr Rogerson was beneficial in getting the bench installed.
Eumundi and Tewantin Branches of Country Womenโs Assoc. (CWA), spent a morning recently raising awareness about the millions of women and girls who spend back-breaking hours carrying clean water long distances to their homes every day. The group of ladies walked along Gympie Tce, Noosaville, handing out 200 buckets to locals they encountered along the river. Organiser Marie Weh explained having to carry water means many girls donโt have the opportunity to go to school and many women miss out on earning an income, or participating in their community. โIt seemed appropriate by handing out buckets, that we inform as many people as we can that there are so many people who canโt just turn on a tap [for water],โ Marie explained.
โOur aim was to raise awareness of the need to help women and girls in many countries by installing wells, tanks or pipes in towns and villages. We decided to hold a walk on Gympie Terrace on the river, as it is one of the lovliest places in the world and we are so blessed with such lovely clean water and beautiful scenery,โ Marie shared. โKenilworth Cheese donated 100 of their cheese buckets and Yandina Hardware donated 100 blue buckets, and people made donations when we gave away the buckets,โ she said. Eumundi CWA member Janet Millington said people were happy to stop and talk to them about the the significance of giving away buckets. โIt was just lovely to see nearly 200 blue and white buckets going up and down the boardwalk,โ Janet enthused. โPeople also had lovely things to say about CWA and the work we do locally, regionally and internationally. Hopefully learning about what we do will encourage more girls and ladies to join their local branch,โ Janet said with a wink.

puzzle pieces, curtains, toothpicks, broken jewellery, birdsโ nests, suitcases and bullet shells to create an old-world whimsical charm,โ Ms Salton said. โMy pieces can be quite fragile and so there are many structural considerations to enable a piece
to be runway ready,โ she shared. Festival judge and acclaimed fashion designer Cindy Vogels said the audience will have their imagination sparked by the eclectic use of unusual materials used to make creative clothing. Award-winning hinterland artist Dr Jandamarra Cadd and
Peter Dwyer of the Whitehouse Design Institute, will join Cindy Vogels on the judging panel. Finalistsโ wearable pieces will be presented on the catwalk at Eumundi Square, Friday 24 May, 6pm. Tickets $35 or table of 12 for $1200 which includes food and drinks or general admission. australianwearableart.com.au.
Event curator, Wendy Roe said guests will be treated to fashion taken to the extreme. โWe have a 16 metre runway where haute couture will meet costumery, where waste will be turned into waistcoats,โ Wendy enthused. โWe have been working on this event for at least a year and we canโt wait to welcome everyone under the stars in the Eumundi Square,โ she said. Health MASSAGE FOR STRESS RELIEF
Sandy Bradley, Remedial Massage Practitioner, Eumundi
Why have a massage after an intense week โ in our crazy-busy frenetic lifestyles when there is just not enough โme timeโ? I think the perception of massage is linked to pain and injury, or a spa experience of relaxation and indulging. In todayโs world of busy, busy, busy โ stress, stress, stress โ more and more people are not sleeping well, not breathing correctly, having too much on oneโs plate and juggling way too many things in everyday life causing tension, stress and anxiety. Over time, this can take a huge toll on our bodies and our mental well-being. Massage helps us to feel nurtured, replenished and topped up in order to have balance, be calm, maintain health, be happy and be the best person we can be for ourselves. Then we can continue to do the best for everyone and everything else. In our hectic lives, massage is not a luxury and bodywork is rapidly becoming an essential element of maintenance for body and mind nurturing, tension relief and return to balance and if possible to be
included in an overall health programme necessary in our busy world. Here are some really good reasons to just go and have a massage. Youโll feel better, be calmer and more relaxed.
Stress in the Body Stress and tension in the body cause pain and discomfort. Letโs face it โ itโs not much fun when our body feels anxious or in pain. Depending on what is causing the pain, massage can help in tension relief, muscle tension reduction in inflammation, improvement in mood, calmness and happiness. Massage helps us to relax, breathe better, increase flexibility and generally feel better. Massage increases blood flow which leads to increased oxygen levels to muscles which helps in rebuilding cells, ease soreness and tension and speeds up recovery.
Happy Chemicals We feel better because massage helps release neurotransmitters in the brain and the gut โ dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin and endorphins which influence a variety of body and psychological functions. Sometimes called the Happy Chemical, serotonin contributes to well-being and happiness and helps regulate the bodyโs sleep-wake cycles and body function. When we are in pain
or are happy, endorphins are released โ a natural pain reliever and anti-depressant. These neurotransmitters are produced naturally in the body to cope with pain and stress. Massage is not just pain relief or to indulge oneself to being spoilt. Massage is a powerful tool to help you take charge of your life, health and well-being so you can face daily challenges. Everyone deserves to be calm and happy. 0413 661 809.

Warm potato and white anchovies salad Alain Bouvier, Eumundi With the return of cooler, autumn weather, we hanker for some warm, comfort food. But I am still enjoying my salads. So I like to combine the two with this delicious option of a potato and anchovy salad. This is a version of an Italian recipe my mother used to make in France in autumn so itโs a classic for me. Make sure you get the white anchovies that have been marinated in white wine vinegar, not the normal ones - which are too salty. Theyโre readily available. I get them at the Cooroy supermarket. I also enjoy making this dish because this time of year I always have an abundance of wild rocket in my veggie patch. Rocket matches perfectly with the white anchoviesโ acidity, the nutty and buttery taste of the kipflers - and a glass of dry Riesling wine! Serves 6. Ingredients
Method
1kg kipfler potatoes
Wash potatoes, put them in a large pot of cold water, skin on.
4 pickling onions 50g white anchovies 3 Tbsp apple cider vinegar 4 Tbsp dry white wine 1 Tbsp chopped flat leaf parsley 1 Tbsp chives
Turn on heat, bring to the boil then simmer until tender (15 to 20 min depending on potato size). Drain and gently slice them in to 1 cm wide pieces. Slice onions in thin rings. Heat some olive oil in pan and gently cook onions.
Olive oil Salt and pepper 6 handfuls of wild roquette or mesclun salad 14
Add wine and vinegar, then gently heat through until tender. Add half of the white anchovies
{ T H E G R E E N 15 May 2019
roughly chopped and half of the herbs. Add salt and pepper to taste. Heat for another minute then set aside. Using the same pan, gently fry potatoes in olive oil until slightly brown on both sides. To serve, lay potatoes slice down and top with cooked onions/ anchovies mix and half of an uncooked white anchovy fillet. Finish with a sprinkle of parsley and chives. Serve with the wild roquette or a mesclun salad.
Sports GOOSE CLUB Without fail, every Friday night at Joeโs Waterhole, a group of community minded volunteers from one of our regionโs local sporting clubs, can be found running the meat tray raffle and prize wheel in a bid to raise funds for their respective groups. The Eumundi Sporting and Youth Club, aka The Goose Club, has been run by Sophie Eaton, Ray Whiting, Geoff Green and Ray Marj Aspinall and a couple of other lovely, old locals, for well over 25 years from Joeโs Waterhole. When asked how the Goose Club started Joeโs Waterhole
manager Sophie explained, โWe started raising money for a pool in Eumundi way back and donated $10,000 to kick it off my kids were only babies then!โ โThe pool took a while... I think my kids were teenagers by the time we got one,โ Sophie laughed. The Eumundi Sporting and Youth Club sell meat trays and do a Goose Club on Friday nights at Joeโs from 5.30pm. Sophie explained that the Goose Club is a board with numbers on it. You pay $2 to buy a number and there are lots of prizes from local businesses and cash prizes drawn
from the spinning wheel or cage. Over the years the Goose Club have supported many individuals and sporting clubs. At the moment they have a roster of a few clubs; Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled (they sponsor two horses), Noosa & District Junior Rugby League, Eumundi Show Grounds, and Cooroora United Football Club. โThe clubs help [to] do the raffles and in turn we support them,โ Sophie shared. โAs with everything as the years go by it gets harder and harder to keep going so we really rely on the support of our locals to keep going,โ she said.

While We Live We Grow
Outdoors
N atu re N otes I AM A CANE TOAD! Iโm told Iโm not pretty, Iโm treated as a pest, and nobody likes me. I have many, many, many, many brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles, and friends (after all, our parents can lay from 4,000 to 36,000 eggs) โฆ. and no-one likes them either. We were originally brought here to protect the sugar cane industry by eating the cane beetle which was threatening the crops. The adult beetles ate the leaves, and the larvae that hatched underground ate the sugar cane roots, killing or stunting the plants. But guess what?!? We can neither jump up to the leaves to catch the beetles, nor do we burrow down to eat the larvae, so how are we to survive? Naturally, we now have to compete with the native wildlife, or simply eat it (we eat pretty well anything that fits in our mouths). We can eat up to 200 food items in one night, and we like frogs and many other native animals and insects. We can also poison pretty well anything that tries
Babette Urban, Eumundi
to attack or eat us. Some native species might become rarer or even extinct because of us. Cane toads rule! And because weโre an introduced species we have very few predators in Australia. We are apparently making a huge nuisance through no fault of our own. Humans have been asked to help keep the cane toad population down, but there are a couple of things you should know first. We still have feelings like other animals. Just like you, we donโt like to be treated cruelly. Our great-great-great-greatgreat-etc grandparents were involved in some fancy scientific research. They had lots of electrodes placed on their heads to find out how they could go to sleep painlessly. The scientists discovered that if toads were put in a bag in the fridge for 4-6 hours, they would go to sleep and become semi-comatose, like a happy hibernation. Then when they are moved to the freezer they donโt feel a thing. This is clearly
the best way for us. Before that though, please be sure you identify us cane toads correctly, as there are some native frogs that look a bit like us. But we cane toads have round pupils in golden eyes, thickly webbed feet, distinct bony ridges above our eyes, obvious
