fter years of dreams, plans and dedication, no smile could have been broader than that on the face of Eumundi State School teacher Jon Gemmell, who on behalf of his school received the annual award for winner of The Healthiest School in Queensland at Brisbane’s Parliament House. It was a bumper harvest for a man who carefully guides his students in their understanding of the benefits of home grown produce and healthy food. In its third year of competition, 18 communities, schools and workplaces from Queensland shared $1.6 million in prize continued on page 7

he “sisters” of Paddy Melon Lane, Belli Park gathered at our home for morning tea to discuss why they loved living in “the Lane”. They all said an important part of this little story was the Lane’s history, and here it is. Paddy Melon Land was formerly part of Jorgensen Rd, which is gazetted to run through to Cooroy but is not connected. It came into existence almost 10 years ago when following a horrific bulldozer accident, the ambulance went to the Jorgensen Rd in Cooroy, causing a long delay. Fearing this could happen again, the residents successfully petitioned Council to change the name and we chose Paddy (after Annette and Mark’s new son Paddy) Melon (we can’t remember why) and Lane because the dirt road which meanders up and around and is complemented by fearsome potholes just looks like a lane. Over numerous cups of tea and coffee and lots of laughter, we concluded the outstanding qualities of the Lane were the peace, the views, the fabulous bird life, great neighbours, lots of fun and laughter, and interesting wildlife. We all agreed there are a few downsides, including snakes (there were plenty of snake stories), ticks, feral cats and dogs, and a particularly arrogant fox who struts along the Lane marking his spots and checking out the various chook pens, decimating the wild ducks and the sweet little quails who live beside the road. Karla, who is a keen horse rider, loves having access to the forest trails and says the Lane is

the gem of the hinterland. Annette loves the amazing sunsets. She says listening to nature’s activities is a favourite way to spend a day and a highlight is watching Black Cockatoos flying through the valley. Dana loves watching the fantastic Wedge Tail Eagles soar over the valley and says the dreadful unkempt road at least keeps unwanted visitors away. Janine says the Lane is a treasure and a peaceful little part of the world enhanced by many resident and visiting birds. Lillian loves the wildlife, the small wallabies, sugar gliders and abundance of birds that feed in her garden. “Oh and we enjoy the locals and the lovely friendly community.” Rosemary says it’s always green with the best views, best breezes and great neighbours with lots of fun and laughter.

ou might continually convert your prospects to customers, but unless you retain them so they continue to buy from you, you’ll be spending the same amount of time, energy and money repeatedly on your prospects and conversion rate drivers. Businesses sometimes focus significant time, effort and money on acquiring more customers but invest very little in retaining them. This is equivalent to continually pouring water into a bucket when there’s a hole in it. There are four key reasons why clients leave one business for another: perceived indifference, product/price, relationship/ connection, or convenience/location. Perceived indifference is the most important by a long shot, ranking approximately 75%. You show customers that you care about them by building relationships with them. Depending on the nature of your business, you can do this by using regular communication and seeking and acting on customer feedback. For example, you might send them a monthly communication and ask them to tell you their ideas for how you could improve the business. Focusing on this turnover driver (instead of contacting prospects when you’re ready to sell) involves nurturing your existing clients by staying in touch with them until they’re ready to buy again. And after they’ve done so, it works to ensure their loyalty irrespective of what your competitors might be doing. As a plumber, you might retain your clients by leaving them with a Valued Client Rewards Card so they get 10% discount on any future services they use you for. You might send them a Christmas card or flyer telling them that they are a valued client and you’d like to be of service to them again in the future. You could also include a fridge magnet for easy reference. elli Park’s Mic Edge on “a bloke’s surf holiday” in Sumatra, Indonesia with mates from the Sunshine Coast, Sydney and Tasmania. The men enjoyed a busy holiday surfing various breaks every day, around Krui in Sumatra. When not surfing, there was a chance to ride elephants at an Elephant orphanage and to feed the pet monkey that lived at the resort, as well as to read Eumundi Green with a Bintang of course. All returned safely!

Foundation looks to secure major funding grant

he Eumundi Historical Foundation is working hard with the aim of obtaining a grant from Minister Simon Crean’s Regional Development Australia Fund (RDAF). The Commonwealth government is providing funds to regionally based organisations to catalyse community led projects that will support local groups to achieve their visions of community development and economic growth. Many community meetings led to the agreement of Eumundi’s community vision “Our Say – Our Place – Our Future”. If the grant application is successful Minister Crean may help bring ahead plans that could otherwise take many years to achieve.
Continuing from a concept plan for the redevelopment of Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre developed by Eumundi Historical Assn in recent years, the Foundation’s application aims to bring the centre up to date in its display space and sympathetically redevelop the building to create improved visitor information facilities and staff working environment and a community hub with accessibility for all. The Foundation is working on an expression of interest for submission by 1 December. Following success at this first stage, grant applications will be submitted in February 2012 and winners will be announced later in the year.

oosa Biosphere Ltd volunteers are inviting all interested members of the community and business operators to one of two short sessions to discuss the option to apply to UNESCO for a possible extension to boundaries of the biosphere to include the Eumundi, Doonan and Verrierdale areas. The greater Noosa region was designated a Man and the Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 2007 and the current boundaries of this internationally recognised reserve are those of the former Noosa Shire Council. Noosa Biosphere Ltd was formed shortly after UNESCO designation and is a local government– community partnership created

Your Say Riding for Disabled says thanks It was a fortunate group of locals who were lucky enough to choose Eumundi Showgrounds to celebrate the running of this year’s Melbourne Cup. Eumundi Green’s Joyce and John outdid themselves in organising such a wonderful event. Max Porter as chef was also outstanding in providing such a sumptuous buffet for all. After many compliments to Max, we all felt as though we’d enjoyed a huge Christmas lunch as very fresh seafood and a huge baked ham were just a small part of the dining options! It goes without saying that it is the assistance and generosity of spirit from the Eumundi community at large, and in particular from Joyce, John and Max, that keeps charitable organisations such as Sunshine Coast Riding for the Disabled (SCRDA) viable. On behalf of SCRDA, I would like to sincerely thank all involved on the day for not only orchestrating a wonderful fun-filled event, but also for raising $2700 towards SCRDA realising their vision of a permanent home on the Sunshine Coast. Council is mean I am an 82 year old pensioner and have difficulty walking even with a stick. Hence I have been granted a disabled sticker. Recently I had to go to the chemist in Eumundi to pick up medication. The disabled parking spot had a car without a sticker parked in it. I parked beside it and was only there for enough time to collect my medication. When I returned to my car, there was a council infringement notice for stopping at the side of a road marked with a yellow line. This line is not visible from the road. The car in the adjacent disabled car park but without a sticker was still parked there, but without an infringement notice. I wrote a letter to Council outlining the circumstances and all I got back was a lecture and a statement that if Council notices a car in a disabled car park without the correct sticker, they will issue an infringement. This was nothing more than revenue raising at the expense of a local senior citizen for whom access to essential medication on a market day is at best inconvenient and at worst impossible. Troops and global warming American troops coming to Australia (perhaps 2500) are young, fit and disciplined, perfect for war or any catastrophe likely in our part of the world. We have war creeping up on us primarily caused by cutting down too many trees and digging up and burning too much carbon. We have destroyed more than half the world’s rainforests and they should be replaced. Australia is a perfect place to start and we have the right units at hand. Three hundred troops could plant 10,000 trees in one day and see it as recreational activity. They would be under the instructions of experts in the field.Three million trees planted each year and cared for could well be expected. If we introduced the Australian troops to the same activity, we would not only double the plantings but provide the best possible social interface and friendships. The smokos would be a hoot! Remembrance Day 2011
O
n a very warm Remembrance Day, a large crowd gathered to mark the anniversary of the armistice which ended World War I and to honour all men and women who have lost their lives in service for their country. The commemoration this year had three parts. Firstly a painting of Flanders Field by artist Stan Reynolds and donated by Merv Bignall was unveiled at Discover Eumundi. The second part was the dedication of eight additional benches donated for the World War II memorial reflection area. Donors were: The Sharp family, the Napier family, the Winter family, the Knight family, the Riddell family, Bill Billings, Rotary Club of Cooroy and Eumundi Sporting & Youth Club. These activities were followed by a traditional Remembrance Day service and laying of wreaths at a memory field kindly created by Eumundi’s Ken Tongue. This included three crosses for soldiers who died in Afghanistan late last month. The service finished with a minute’s silence and morning tea hosted by Eumundi CWA.

orld renowned body artist Bec Anthony will be painting up a sea of colour for the official launch of the 2012 Australian Body Art Carnivale on Wednesday 30 November on the back steps of The Fig Tree, opposite the markets. Bec will be painting Tanya Young from Kingfisher Bay Resort (one of the sponsors for the event) and the resulting artwork will become the flagship image for 2012. The artist will commence about 8am and will take until approx 11.30am to complete her work. It’s a great chance to sneak a preview of what promises to be the best Carnivale yet.

his weekend’s opening of Up Eumundi Road is a boomer – bookings are excellent. At the time of writing, Friday (tomorrow) night’s dinner show had just a few places left, but this Saturday night is booked out. Sunday’s 2pm matinee has some places, so it’s worth checking. Already the following Saturday, 3 December, is all but full, Thursday 1 and Friday 2 December have some good tables, as does Sunday, 4 December. Check by calling 5472 8200 or online at www.eumundilivetheatre.com. If you’ve never experienced this Coast icon, it’s been running for an incredible 16 years and is, without any doubt, the funniest show on the Sunshine Coast (a little bit blue but nice, and please note it’s rated Non-PC). The fact that Up Eumundi Road comes complete with an excellent buffetstyle dinner makes the night out complete, plus there’s a licensed
bar with moderate prices. Special guest is Louie the Fly; if anyone’s going to kill him off, Up Eumundi will. Getting honourable (or is that horrible) mentions are Julia, Kev, Malcolm, Tony and Bob, and a there’s a secret royal guest. Cost is $38, $36 for eight or more, with non-dining matinees $18. Public art policy for the Coast
S
unshine Coast Council adopted a public art policy last week to recognise the importance of public art in the creation of vibrant and attractive public places and the social and economic value that flows from that. Division 5 Cr Jenny McKay said that the policy means that public art will be recognised in the initial stages of planning for the capital works program. “Public art can showcase the heritage, character and aspirations of the Sunshine Coast region. The policy reflects Council’s commitment to the creation of stimulating and exciting public spaces that draw upon and enhance community identity and character. “Delivery of the policy will include a transparent, well developed and maintained public art program, increased expression
and acknowledgement of the region’s unique local communities, and development of a sustainable and strong creative industry. “The principles in the policy provide the foundation for a dynamic public art program that will build on the Sunshine Coast’s reputation as a creative and innovative region,” Cr McKay said. The six principles that will guide the delivery of Council’s public art program into the future are: Excellence in project initiation, concept, design and fabrication Transparent decision-making processes Contribution to local community character Meaningful community engagement Contribution to the region’s economy Building the capacity of local artists and arts organisations.

In the Spotlight Going “over the top” for prostate research Fran Maguire Prostate cancer takes the lives of close to 3300 Australian men each year and around 20,000 new cases are diagnosed annually. Phillip Jenkins and his brother Peter boated 9500km “over the top” from Sydney to Perth to raise awareness of the disease and raise funds for research.
P
hillip Jenkins is a motivated man brimming with energy and enthusiasm as he shows me around his and wife Carol’s recently acquired home. A fifth generation Western Australian, Phillip left long roots behind seeking “a change” when he and Carol relocated from a vibrant Perth suburb to acreage in Tinbeerwah early this year. Phillip’s family has a history of prostate cancer. His father David lived with the disease for 35 years and his brother Peter was diagnosed four years ago and received the “all clear” in January. The brothers were looking for an adventure with “a cause” to make it worthwhile. That, the family health history and boating backgrounds (Phillip an oceangoing sailor and Peter a power

boater), soon coalesced into “Over The Top”. Heavyweight sponsorship enabled them to meet their expedition budget of more than $400,000 and on 1 August the Honda Over The Top expedition motored out of Sydney harbour in the 8.6m “rubber ducky” Gemini Pro. The trip, Phillip says, was as much, if not more, about raising awareness of men’s health and the need and means of testing for prostate cancer, than fundraising. “I talked to people at every stop,” he says. “When we reached Darwin we’d changed enough

lives to make it worthwhile.” Having been diagnosed with a benign tumour beside his pituitary gland (controlled by treatment), and not wanting to aggravate old injuries, Phillip says he and Carol take a proactive approach to their health. “It’s diet and exercise at whatever age. It’s one of the reasons we love living here, the fantastic produce.” It may seem obvious but Phillip says, and fans of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy will appreciate this, “Australia ‘is really big’. The vastness of Australia is aweinspiring – we went for three days out of Darwin, 1000km, without
seeing a boat.” A very different and less welcome insight Phillip gained was of our negative impacts on our landscape and waterways. On a side trip from Darwin he was shocked to learn that Kakadu National Park has a life expectancy of perhaps 10 years. “That was unexpected and tragic,” he says. With the trip over, Phillip hopes to speak about it from different perspectives: adventure, fund raising, men’s health. A director of the International Centre for Radio Astronomy Research (ICRAR) since 2009 and the founder and executive chairman of the PIVoD Group until he sold his interest in 2007, he has a passionate belief in the importance of small businesses in our society and is pursuing how he might mentor on business strategy and management practice. Twenty-six players will tour France and England for four weeks playing two games in each country. Our Association is proud to have been able to assist Ajuma with some of his costs in getting this far in his football career and we wish him every success and to his brother Mboya who is training in the Under 20s pre-season for the Melbourne Storm.

10/10/10: The date of 10 October 2010 (10/10/10) became a widely popular date to get married because it only consists of the number 10. It is even “luckier” on the date of 10/10/10 at 10.10am or 10.10pm. The reason for this comes from the story of George Inmad who had been deaf since birth. On 10/10/1910 at 10.10pm, he was suddenly able to hear. It was a medical mystery and the only conclusion the doctors came to was that he was very lucky. From then on, it is believed that you will have good luck if you touch your ears at 10.10am or 10.10pm.

ith the Verrierdale Full Moon dance having just passed, I answer why we can’t party every month. The full moon is a lunar phase occurring when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth from the sun and all three bodies are aligned in a straight line. It appears as an entire circle in the sky. The only month that can occur without a full moon is February. The world’s tidal ranges are at their maximum during the full moon when the sun, earth and moon are in line.

Environment and Outdoors Control burn at Verrierdale

I
ecently the Verrierdale Rural Fire Brigade conducted a control burn of some 20 acres on Steve Butler’s property. Almost the full complement of members turned out. This caused a minor logistics problem in conveying 10 personnel to the fire ground in our three Light Attack vehicles which are regulated to a crew of two. Access was over deeply rutted swampy terrain which guaranteed at least one appliance would get bogged. It was dragged out in no
time – practice makes perfect. At the fire ground all three appliances used their full payload of 600 litres to control the burn and prevent spread to adjoining land. One vehicle was sent back to re-tank. With the heat of the fire added to the heat of the day it was important for crews to keep up their own water intake. The burn was successful in clearing an area with potential for serious wildfire. Note: the Brigade is always keen to get new members.

Are you bushfire prepared?
n early April this year my wife Amy was away for the weekend so I took my kids Charlie, 9, and Coco, 7, to Deer Park at Imbil for Saturday night followed by a paddle on Yabba Creek on Sunday morning. I am not sure what came over me during the weekend but I suggested to Charlie that we should paddle the Mary River. What started as a crazy idea quickly developed into a plan or, more accurately, a part plan. We checked the maps and saw that the Mary River starts where the Mary Creek joins the Kilcoy Creek at the bottom of the Bellthorpe Ranges, west of Maleny. My father, who is 71, decided to join us, as did one of Charlie’s friends, Jack Harvison. The Mary River is about 320km long, running out into Hervey Bay just past Maryborough at River Heads. The trip took 16 days although we broke it up into mostly weekend stages. For the first part of the trip we set up base camps at places like Cambroon Camping Ground and Kenilworth Homestead. From the Traveston Dam crossing near Gympie, we carried our gear and camped on sandbanks on the bed of the river.
For the most part, the Mary River is a beautiful stream that flows between banks about 20 metres high with fast sections and rapids all the way to Tiaro just outside Maryborough. I think the highlight for the kids was learning to make a campfire and not quite knowing where we’d be able to set up camp for the night. The trip gave us a wonderful insight into one of the hidden treasures of the region. Although I may not do the whole trip again, I look forward to being dropped off somewhere like Conondale or Bells Bride (Kilkivan Road) on a Friday afternoon for a long weekend with friends canoeing and camping on the Mary.

Nature Notes and Outdoors Indian Mynas Kon Hepers
I
t has taken them just on 150 years but they have now arrived. A local resident has spotted an Indian Myna (also spelled Mynah) in Seib Road, Eumundi. These Asian birds were first released in Melbourne in 1862, presumably to assist with insect control. Later there were releases in other cities, but also in the North Queensland cane fields, probably for the same reason. Some 50 years later, Cane Toads were released with the same negative result and potential for enormous harm to our native wildlife. Indian Mynas, Acridotheres tristis, meaning gloomy or dullcoloured locust hunters, are also referred to as “Flying Cane Toads” and their spread up the East Coast seems unstoppable. Fortunately, the birds prefer an urban habitat and have not spread far inland. But in the parks and fringes of urban land they displace our native birds and small mammals from hollows and crevices, even nest-boxes, on which they rely for breeding, and our birds are no match for the highly aggressive newcomers. Mynas are in the same family as that other introduced bird pest the Common Starling and, like them, can wreak havoc on grain and fruit production. They pair for life and, depending on habitat availability, are found in single pairs or flocks up to hundreds of birds. Their greatest distribution density is Melbourne and Sydney. Until now our part of the Sunshine Coast has been Myna-free; but we are surrounded as they are in Brisbane, on Bribie and north of us in Gympie and Childers/Hervey Bay. A number of councils have developed or are establishing activities to reduce their Myna populations, mainly through trapping but of course there are considerations of humane
disposal of the trapped birds. Our Sunshine Coast Regional Council is leading the field in Queensland in addressing this problem as part of its Pest Management Program. It seeks the assistance of residents in reporting Mynas and becoming actively involved in trapping on their own properties with Councilprovided traps. Personal observation: we go to Sydney twice a year and are always amused at those cheeky Mynas strutting along, much bolder than the natives. They have certainly replaced many of the native species we were used to observing in the local park. But there is one bird that is not intimidated and gives the Mynas a hard time. This stroppy native is the Noisy Miner, aka “Mickey Bird” whose numbers have increased noticeably probably due to all the plantings of Grevilleas, and they don’t need hollows for nesting.

Lessons for Life Why vinyl? Steve Sweet, Tribal Vinyl, Wed and Sat (next to Pearls for Girls)

ather than go into an argument about why vinyl produces a superior sound than digital mediums of recorded music, I thought I would just point out a couple of other reasons to favour vinyl. Something like what has happened in the world of food has also happened in the world of music. Our modern, digital mediums for listening to music such as CD players, computer playlists and portable Mp3 players make music instantly and widely available; however, consuming music in this way can be more akin to fast food outlets than fine dining. The one area where digital music most definitely wins out is convenience, which is certainly an attractive quality
in our busy generation. However what are we sacrificing to gain this convenience? Endless playlists can make music less engaging and pushes it into the background. My challenge to the people of Eumundi is to take the time to sit down next to a quality turntable with a quality sound system and put on one of your favourite albums. Whilst it is playing, don’t try and do anything else. Just sit and listen. Look at the artwork on the front and back of the cover and let it soak in. Let it engage your mind and soul. Half way through your album, you will have to stop and pick up the music in your hands and flip it over. While it is in your hands, consider the fact that those grooves were made to vary in a manner analogous to

the variations in air pressure of the original sound. In a very real sense you are holding the actual music, as opposed to a CD which is actually a digital representation of the music. Then you will have to carefully place the needle back onto the vinyl. The whole experience is much more tactile. The very nature of vinyl encourages a much deeper engagement with the music. It demands that you attend to it. It actually needs you to be
actively involved or the process won’t work. At the same time it encourages you to listen to the album as a whole and it also has a very real piece of visual art to go with the audio art. I realise we are all very busy and finding time to enjoy this experience can be hard. But busy people tend to eat fast food more as well and I’m not judging that, but let us not pretend that it compares to the way we savour a slow cooked meal!

In pride of place we have our latest heritage item, a model car hand built by Lionel Arundell (1928-2011), a descendant of the first Arundell to settle in Eumundi. At 2.2m long it is quite eye catching and really worth a look. On loan for five years we are building a special platform so people can see the mechanism underneath that made it run. Descendants (pictured with the model car) Kaine Solomona, Tracey Solomon and Kevin Arundell have shared their knowledge of the construction by Lionel, modelled on a cross between a Ford and a Stutz Bearcat! Lionel reportedly said he made it from washing machines, motorbikes, cake tins, hot water systems, lawn mowers and old cash registers – welded, moulded and screwed together to make the car which is fully operational – complete with lights, fuel tank, battery and motor.

More than $1500 was raised by over 150 students, staff and parents as they dressed in pink and enjoyed a vibrant morning of Zumba to raise funds for the Cindy Mackenzie Breast Cancer Foundation.

Florence is stunning, sitting in a valley with the hills as a backdrop. It is steeped in history, a monument to the Renaissance. Florence is divided by the River Arno, across which stands the very famous Ponte Vecchio.
The Leaning Tower of Pisa, completed in 1350, is built on a sandy sub-soil, the tower flouting the laws of gravity. Recent engineering intervention has decreased the lean by 38cm, and now it’s safe for the public to climb. The Tower, Duomo and Baptistry stand in The Campo dei Miracolli. All three are simply stunningly beautiful; the white of the buildings in contrast to the verdant green lawns really takes your breath away.
The Palio di Siena, a bare back horse race dating from 1283, is held each year on 2 July in honour of the Madonna of Provenzano, and on 16 August in honour of the Assumption of Mary. There are 17 Contradas (districts) from which 10 horses are chosen by the drawing of lots. They are then taken to each district for the church blessing. It is an extraordinary event: the colour, pageantry, processions, medieval costumes and the emotions of the Sienese.
