A HINTERLAND MOMENT

THIS

Editor’s note ... This is the driest it’s been in this region for a while. And there’s little reprieve in the weeks (possibly months) ahead. Locals are waiting for tank refills for 3 -6 weeks. $200 loads are now $400. The water truck deliveries aren’t even answering their phones anymore – and the Noosaville water refill station pump has been broken and filling slowly – what had taken 10 minutes to fill a tanker is now taking 30. Families are finding creative ways to keep clean – the local swimming pool is a popular choice, sneaking into the Noosa Civic shower is another... or visiting friends and family on town water. My preference is the ocean followed by a cold, bracing shower amongst the bush turkeys.

Just Love Eumundi!

And, over the weekend Friday 29 September to Sunday 1 October, don’t miss the huge array of events being planned by Eumundi Chamber of Commerce including Saturday’s Grand parade and concert showcasing Eumundi agriculture, retail, markets, street performers, Templeton dancers, ‘deadly’ culture, great entertainment for the whole family and, our local farming produce excellence including our region’s famous strawberries, ginger and bamboo.

The “Sunny Coast” turns 5o|| The glorious ‘Sunshine Coast’ that we know and love officially replaced the ‘Near North Coast’ just 50 years ago, when the name ‘Sunshine Coast’ was officially endorsed by the then Landsborough, Maroochy and Noosa councils in November, 1966 and it was agreed to utilise this name to cover all three Shires. The name tied in with the decision to also form the Sunshine Coast Promotion Bureau to market the district covered by the three Shires. ‘Sunshine’ signifying ‘brightness and warmth’ (a distinction to the Gold Coast). Thus, the name was endorsed by the Minister for Lands of the time, Alan Fletcher, with effect from 1 August 1967. Eumundi is always up for a party so this month we mark several fabulous events that celebrate the name change and take a look back into into a very different time for our community.

Business D E A D LY E S P R E S S O C A F E I N EUMUNDI Deadly Espresso Café at the Eumundi Pavilion Markets, at 79 Memorial Dr, is a business with a purpose. Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with SevGen Indigenous Corporation, has established a working café operating on the last Friday of every month that offers enterprise, education and entrepreneurship to local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in our region. SevGen was recently awarded a Community Partnership grant through Sunshine Coast Regional Council. sevgen.com.au

Warren and Leigh Richards spent most of their married life travelling and working whilst employed in the casino industry. After spending a month attending the Eumundi Markets in August 2013, Warren and Leigh decided to relocate their business from the South Coast of NSW.

H OT T E S T W I N T E R & H I G H E S T V I S I TO R S Not only has the Sunshine Coast experienced its hottest winter on record, but has attracted the highest ever increase in international visitors. The Coast has had 296,000 arrivals visiting to the year ending June 2017, up 12% and contributing $249 million in visitor expenditure to the economy. The International Visitor Statistics by Tourism Research Australia and show New Zealand remains the Sunshine Coast’s largest inbound market, growing 12% to 71,000 visitors. The region attracted 58,000 visitors from the UK up 7%, 36,000 from Germany growing 12% and 19,000 visited from the US increasing 0.2% year on year. Asian arrivals totalled 21,000, while the region attracted 15,000 visitors from Scandinavia increasing by 38% and 13,000

from Canada, up 21%. CEO of Visit Sunshine Coast (VSC) Simon Latchford said the Coast experienced 12% growth in international visitors against a backdrop of a state-wide increase of 6% and a national increase of 9%. “What has been particularly encouraging is the interest in our Hinterland attractions – the adventure options, health retreats, the historic villages and the incredible richness of our food producers,” Mr Latchford explained.

So, they headed home... placed their house on the market and moved to Queensland. Now their business, ‘myhappyshoes’, is located at Eumundi Square. Their life now is the polar opposite to their previous life and they couldn’t be happier. “Opening our shop at Eumundi Square is one of the best decisions we’ve made. There is a real sense of community here, we love it.”

The strategic approach for VSC from 2017 to 2020 is to continue focusing on top performing western markets while expanding efforts on the new and emerging markets in Scandinavia, France and South East Asia. tra.gov.au

A NEW DAY John Strano, Eumundi

Leaves on the ground crack and curl; sun burns off the fog and swings over dust, frosty air moves north of the line. Crows on time, call in the gully. Grevilleas are impatient, their flowers of red and cream glowed up weeks ago. To the west rusty escarpments shaft above smoky ranges insects skirl in the grass, and although dark clouds reflect whatever we imagine, a fierce sun fractures eyeballs. This is a harsh land of contrasts known for its ‘droughts and flooding rains’* and today is the first day of Spring.

Books AU S T R A L I A’ S S T E L L A R L I T E R A RY AWA R D Judith Pattison, Doonan Over the past few years I have written several articles for the Green about the nominees and winners of both the Miles Franklin award and its complementary award, the Stella Prize (established in 2013) which was set up to address the gender imbalance in winners of the Miles Franklin. As a challenge, I read each of the books nominated that year for the Stella Prize and made my own selection: Carrie Tiffany’s Mateship with Birds. I enjoyed the exercise and was pleased to have my selection validated by the judges. It remains one of my favourite books and the Stella continues to keep my attention.

context to include other aspects of current Australian life: disability (his son), the Stolen Generation and the catastrophic effects of humans on other species (his adopted daughter and her museum work with extinctions). There are so many levels and themes and well researched information (the novel is based on Wilson’s Ph.D research) and Wilson has managed to tie it all together into an erudite and yet very readable book. My only criticism is that in the process it seems a bit too tidy and squeaks of some sticky clichés. I don’t say this very often about books these days, but it probably should have been longer...

While I still read the winners of both awards, I don’t manage to read all the nominees. I’ve only read the winner of this year’s Miles Franklin - Extinctions by Josephine Wilson – so don’t know how the others compare, but it more than meets the standard Franklin set for the prize as a novel of the “highest literary merit” about Australian life. Extinctions is the story of Frederick Lothian, an ageing engineer and a specialist in concrete - “the J.D Salinger of concrete - a frustrated architect, alienated from his family and the world around him, who now lives in a retirement village. “He hated the word ‘retirement’ but not as much as he hated the word ‘village’, as if ageing made you a peasant or a fool. Herein lives the village idiot.” Fred is clearly stuck on a lonely trajectory of his own making. It is through his changing relationships with the other characters in his life, especially his new neighbour, Jan, that the heart of the story and Fred’s new path emerges. The other characters also broaden the

Sports W H Y YO U R C H I L D S H O U L D L E A R N TO S W I M Adrian Williams, Swim instructor, Eumundi Having a qualified person teach your child to swim gives your kids the best start in life. There are two main suppliers of training in Australia for swimming qualifications. These are Aust Swim and Swim Australia. Both are nationally recognised bodies who conduct professional training programs for instructors. A child who learns to swim when young develops crucial lifelong water awareness and swimming ability; however, adult supervision is required at all times when a child is in the water.

live happy!

Why Pilates with Susa?

Royal Life Saving Australia describes supervision for children under 5 as being within arms reach at all times. Children 5-10 actively supervising, watching at all times while being prepared to act and enter the water. Leaving your child with an older sibling is not adequate supervision in an aquatic environment.

Safety

Life skill

• 1 in 5 drowning deaths are children aged under 18 years of age

On top of all the other benefits of learning to swim, there’s the fact that swimming is a skill for life. Once the skill is learned, your child will always know how to swim, regardless of their fitness level. Swimming is an recreational activity that can be done at every stage of life. There are numerous studies showing the health benefits of the older population participating in both structured and free flowing aquatic activities, not to mentioned Masters swimming.

• 56 children drowned last year • 91% of children aged 0-4 fell or wandered into the water • 43% of children aged 10-14 drowned in rivers • Males are 4 times more likely to drown than females • Drowning rate dramatically increases as teenagers become young adults.

Improves fitness Swimming is a low-impact form of exercise that provides a great alternative to sedentary activities like watching TV and playing computer games. It’s also a surefire way to tire the kids out, as swimming provides a workout for the entire body! In particular, it improves coordination, balance, function strength and flexibility. The fun of playing around in the water allows children to exercise without even knowing it!

Increases water confidence Not only is swimming great for the body, it’s also great for your child’s mind. It can improve their mood and self-esteem. Learning to swim early on will also reduce a child’s fear of water, making pools and beaches less stressful environments. As they develop confidence in their swimming ability, they will feel more comfortable splashing around and learn to enjoy themselves in the water. Swimming can also be a great social activity and a great way for children to bond with their family and make new friends.

professional that a child is not deemed a safe swimmer until they can complete 400m non stop without assistance. This is essential to manage the dynamic waterways here in Queensland (beaches, dams, rivers and creeks). But more on that next time! Until then, please choose your swimming instructors carefully, ensure they are insured Qualified by either Swim Australia or Aust Swim and operate in a well maintained, clean pool.

Living in our coastal environment swimming is especially useful for taking part in other recreational water activities, such as kayaking, surfing, diving, sailing, and so forth. Imagine not being able to enjoy the amazing water we have here on the coast not only the beaches but the dam in your or your neighbour’s place or at the Municipal Dams found in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland.

It’s fun! It’s a fantastic and versatile activity that can be done all year round, indoors and outdoors, alone or in a team, at a beach or in a pool, as a competitive sport or as a recreational activity with friends and family. With all the splashes and colourful accessories - swimming will put a smile on your child’s face (and provide a few giggles, too!). Enrolling your child in a swimming program at an early age and taking them to extra-curricular swimming lessons will improve their general level of confidence in the water and imrove their Aquatic Skills. It all begins innocently enough, saying yes to a few extra shifts at work, agreeing to volunteer at your child’s school, saying yes to a great project or two, until it starts to feel like you’re training for a marathon or a highaltitude climb. Your once calm demeanour is lost and you’ve taken on a manic edge. All that cortisol stimulates increased insulin, causing you to directly crave carbohydrates and next thing you know you’re on a carb bender. You can choose your poison here - chocolate, bread, chips, alcohol - there are so many to choose from and they are everywhere! This leads to a metabolic cascade that makes you crave more of “that little treat”. Before you know it, there are a few too many extra kilos on the scales, or you just feel bloated and frumpy. This is when you know it’s time to break the cycle by doing a cleanse. Every culture has traditional cleansing periods built into their yearly cycles. While they all vary in season, duration and exact protocol, they all serve the same purpose; to relieve the bodily burden of excess food and

often parasites that have been stagnating in the digestive tract. For many of us with European ancestry, spring was the traditional time for cleansing. Europeans who experienced cold snowy winters with little fresh food often had to rely on salted or cured meats, root vegetables and preserves over the winter months. Then as the snow began to melt, those beautiful bitter greens would begin to emerge from the Earth. Dandelion, chicory and dock - all with bitter compounds that stimulate the digestive tract - improving the secretion of digestive enzymes, the production of bile in the gall bladder, the function of the liver and promoting peristalsis which moves faecal matter through the digestive tract and out of the body. It’s the perfect antidote to months of stodgy food and reduced physical activity.

media, which helps emulsify fats in the body and is high in vitamin C; dock root, Rumex crispus, which improves digestion and is a mild laxative; dandelion, Taraxicum officinale, which improves liver, gallbladder and kidney function, the leaves are diuretic and the root detoxifying; and farmers friend, Bindens pilosa, which is a potent antioxidant and blood sugar regulator. heidimerika.com

Outdoors CAMPFIRE RULES

L I V I N G B AC K YA R D WORMS! – I AM NOT TALKING GARDEN WORMS [PART 1] Kirstie Henning, Animal Nutritionist, North Arm

Photo: Jeanette Grevett Over the school holidays many families head off on a spring camping holiday – or set up a make shift campsite in the back yard or paddock. But after a dry winter – and what’s shaping up to also be a dry spring - when grass is scorched enough to serve as kindling - it’s more important than ever to brief yourself before lighting a campfire. 1. Positioning - Campfires should be in cleared areas, with no overhanging branches, minimal grass and scrub. Ensure it’s a safe distance from tents with camping equipment stored well away especially flammables like gas cylinders and fuel cans. 2. Building - Where possible use a barbeque pit or fire pit and surround it with large rocks. When selecting rocks, be aware that heated river or creek stones may shatter if cooled quickly. Ensure fire stays a controllable size.

3. Starting - Start your campfire using an appropriate ignition source with paper and small kindling. Never use flammable liquids (such as petrol) to get a fire started. 4. Extinguishing - Put your campfire out with water. Use water from your washing up to put campfires out. 5. Monitoring - Never leave a campfire unattended for any period of time, particularly overnight.

I S WAT E R O R SA N D B E T T E R F O R EXTINGUISHING A CAMP FIRE? Firefighters and doctors lit three campfires and let them burn for three hours, by which time they were hotter than 500°C. They then put one out with water, one with sand, and let one burn out. Eight hours later ... • The campfire left to burn itself out was still over 100°C. This campfire spontaneously re-ignited the next morning and was hot enough to severely burn.

We all can get exposed to intestinal worms, but animals can be more prone to overloads as they tend to eat off the ground. Dogs, cats, chickens, sheep, cows, goats, guinea pigs and most other animals we house domestically need treating for worms to ensure they keep in optimum health. In this article I am focusing on goats (sheep and cows are very similar). I love being able to holistically care for all of my farm animals and when done correctly I can definitely minimise the need to chemically worm them. However, this takes a lot of time, space and dedication to get it right. There are natural products that have the ability to deter worms when used regularly, including garlic, wormwood,

Natu re No tes Ph oto

• The campfire that was put out by being covered with sand was still nearly 100°C. Campfires covered with sand not only keep their heat for longer, but are also disguised – and can look like a sand-pit or sandcastle to small children. The “sand castle” at this point may have a temperature in excess of 300°C less than 10 cm below its surface. Easily hot enough to cause a serious burn. Most campfire burns are caused by hot embers the morning after a fire. • The campfire put out by water was cooled to less than 50°C after 10 minutes, and to around 10°C after eight hours. These are safe temperatures and unlikely to cause burns.

onion, copper and sulphur. Much care needs to be used when feeding such products as even natural products can be lethal if overdosed. Why do we have such major problems with goats and intestinal worms in a domestic environment? The fact is, goats are supposed to forage and much of their day is spent eating above the ground which is predominantly “worm-free” (like leaves and branches). Scouring (diarrhoea) is usually a sign of this issue and requires chemically treating if it has progressed this far. Unfortunately, on the Coast we have the dreaded Barbers Pole Worm which can go unnoticed externally but internally it is eating away and affecting the liver. Vets on the Sunshine Coast recommend that we worm monthly with a product registered to treat Barbers Pole Worm. Checking your goats’ iron levels weekly is a good way to judge whether they need worming. Lift up their eyelid and check that it is nice and pink and not white. Being pale indicates anaemia and this is a common problem caused by worm overloads. Goat kids can go downhill very fast so act quickly and seek professional advice! In the next article I will give you an overview of how to reduce worm associated problems on your farm. Facebook: Animal Park - All Animal Therapy was PoulTree Park

A TA L E O F T W O S WA M P I E S [ PA RT 1 ] Kon & Mos Hepers, Verrierdale Most mornings you’d find two wallabies outside our back door, high-fiving each other or engaged in an all-in kicking brawl on the lawn. Meggsie and Willie are two swampies that we reared and released on our Verrierdale property in 2004. The pair came to us in mid-2003 at well under a kilogram in weight, both orphaned as a result of road accidents, both highly stressed. Despite the usual three-hourly feeds causing almost sleepless nights, trips to the vet for antibiotics, home administered injections and many other dramas, both wallabies and foster parents somehow survived. Meggsie and Willie are swamp wallabies (Wallabia bicolor) but very individual in shape, colour, temperament and habit. Meggsie is named after Ginger Meggs due to his ginger colouring. He generally has a vacant look in his eye and has been very obnoxious towards us during his teenage phase when he tried to establish dominance over everything on our property – including us. We still laugh at how a 10kg juvenile wallaby can shred your pants, inflict many deep scratches and a cut requiring 10 stitches on a 75kg man in only two seconds - and give the dog a good kicking at the same time. It’s very Monty Python-ish in retrospect but not so funny at the time. Meggsie loves his tucker. The books say that swamp wallabies are specialist browsers but

Meggsie has never followed any rules and until lately we have never seen him browsing. He constantly grazes on the lawn and laps water out of the bird bath or hangs out for a slice of sweet potato. But big, tough Meggsie has an endearing habit – he sucks his thumb, or more accurately his big toe, although he has to sit in an awkward position to reach it. On hot days he comes out of the bush and lies down for his siesta next to our back porch. We are not impressed with the ticks and flat-flies he brings to share with us in his wake. The other swampie, Willie, by contrast, is slim and dainty and a true-to-type swamp wallaby with the characteristic white tail-tip. Where his big brother looks dopey, rarely sits up and couldn’t be bothered looking around whilst feeding, Willie looks smart, is always vigilant and makes himself scarce at any unusual activity - such as visitors to our home. We then see his little face peeking out watching from his favourite possie in the high grass. Willie is definitely a browser and is the reason we have learnt to put mesh screens around our favourite plants. He is completely addicted to Calliandra pom-poms and stands on tip-toe to reach the higher ones. Eight acres of regrowth bush on our block plus the adjacent 40 acres doesn’t satisfy him. He very rarely grazes on our lawn, doesn’t drink in 17

public and never fertilises the concrete on our back porch. It was Willie who introduced Meggsie to thieving sunflower seeds out of the bird feeder. And we believe it’s Willie who sneaks around at night just to make all our security lights come on. He has a bit of an unusual gait stemming from his early accident but it doesn’t seem to handicap him and he can really “go” when he wants to. Inexplicably, whilst Meggsie sometimes worried us by turning up festooned with paralysis ticks, Willie never seemed to harbour these parasites. Swamp wallabies are “solitary and reclusive” (not Meggsie) but our two boys get together quite frequently. What looks like brotherly love with hugging and hand-holding invariably ends up in a kick-boxing contest. Meggsie is bigger, heavier and stronger but Willie, aka “the Assassin”, uses superior tactics. He always launches surprise attacks (Meggsie will never learn!) and always from higher ground which facilitates head-kicking. Meggsie seems to get bored with this and breaks off to graze some more but as soon as his back is turned Willie resumes the attack. The contest as such can go on for over an hour with short spells between “rounds”, then they disperse to separate areas with Willie heading for the dense undergrowth.

Letters TRUCK HARASSMENT VALE RICK RUSSELL later. Rick also contributed to community development by undertaking leadership roles in his Probus Club.

Rick Russell, until recently a resident of 398 Eumundi Range Rd, died aged 77 on 30 August after a long illness. Rick was a volunteer for Eumundi Green for the first six years of the publication’s life until his health declined. He was one of the crew who regularly inserted promotional flyers and booklets into the fortnightly magazine thus assisting the promotions and the finances of the community magazine.

Rick will be remembered as a community front-runner, a kind and decent man, and someone willing to give a hand to support those in need in the community. Joyce & John Turnbull, Eumundi.

Rick was also a stalwart of the Eumundi community committee which established Eumundi Information Office (EIO) in a donated hut recycled from the Brisbane Expo in 1988 and relocated to Caplick Park in 2003 and then moved later to the markets site. The service provided by volunteers at both sites was much appreciated by visitors and locals and led to the information service being incorporated into Discover Eumundi heritage centre functions some years

Gravel truck harassment has returned on Eumundi Kenilworth Rd with heavy trucks once again tailgating vehicles abiding to the 80 and 90km per hour speed limit along our road. The matter has been reported to Eumundi police and Boral’s Moy Pocket quarry. Having a 50 tonne truck riding their bumper is scary - even for the most experienced of drivers. The majority of the truck drivers place safety ahead of schedule, however the odd cowboy is jeopardising the safety of other road users. Where an incident occurs, keep a detail of time, location, rego number etc. and report to our Eumundi police station staff. Dun Dart, Belli Park.
