Notes Editor’s note ...

A HINTERLAND MOMENT

Things happen: happy moments, challenging periods, stuff breaks your heart, or makes your soul sing. That’s life. Everyone’s is different – everyone goes through their own... stuff. But what we all have in common is this beautiful pocket of hinterland. I overheard people in the park recently talking about the lovely ‘vibe’ here. As far as community spirit, heart, passion – whatever you want to call it – goes, we have a lot of it. And you can dip in and out of it as you need. I have a few Eumundi friends going through a rough patch, but they’re surrounded by their various community groups who can offer support - and have this amazing village life (catching up for a coffee, sitting on a mate’s veranda, or running into a friendly face on the street) which makes it a little easier to cope. We are beyond lucky to live here and have this life. What we do with it is completely our choice. And we’re in good company here.

REMEMBER THE DAYS IN PNG Joe’s Waterhole, Eumundi 6pm Fri 27th October.

Just a few weeks away now so time to claim the date. $25 includes meal and first drink Our sub-tropical hinterland paradise seems to attract Papua New Guinea ex-pats who still feel strong connections the country and its people.

Just Love Eumundi!

The wait is over||| The biggest capital project by Eumundi community organisations in collaboration with Sunshine Coast Council is now complete. The area known as The Terraces is open for business! This critical piece of infrastructure will provide the foundation for many years of continued success for the EDCA Wednesday and OEM Saturday markets in this sylvan corridor amongst trees and birdlife. Designed by Guymer Bailey Architects with engineering by Callaghan and Toth and the works done by local builder Toobella Homes, we are proud of this beautiful addition to the Eumundi community amenity. Apart from markets, this lovely space will lend itself to community events, shows and other public activities for years to come. Thanks to all the local businesses and market operators for their patience - we trust the new Terraces will prove to be an boon to Eumundi business and lifestyle.

Community 5 0 Y E A R S E U M U N D I PA R A D E Eumundi celebrated the naming of the Sunshine Coast 50 years ago, with a parade down Memorial Dr last Saturday afternoon. What the afternoon lacked in spectators it made up for with enthusiasm. Many community groups and businesses came together to march, along with representatives from some of Eumundi’s founding families. Performances from Uncle Bob’s Jug Band, School of Rock kids, and Mufasa created a fantastic atmosphere for an afternoon in the sunshine.

The “Cotton Diva” Story… I come from a lineage of women who created beauty wherever they went, it was just innate in their nature. My grand-mother sewed for her community, and she bought me a sewing machine when I was 6 and I created with her.

Naturally, I create beautiful feminine forms in cloth. My Influencers? … I was a free spirit in the 70’s and travelled to London with my soul mate Gerry. Since then, we have had a blessed journey of family, living at the beach in Noosa, and travel-ling throughout mystical India for the past 15 years. The sheer uplifting and breathtaking beauty of colour in India I could not resist....it was so natural for me to create beautiful clothes in those colours of India, in dynamic prints, in feminine and earthy styles. I absolutely love what I do and I offer it to you. Naturally, all of my creations are ethically manufactured to high quality standards.

To ease the dire situation regarding water supplies for residents who aren’t connected to town water, Council is now providing extra access to Council taps for domestic quantities of water. A list of refilling points (garden size tap and hose) is now available on Council’s website. To address this problem moving forward, Council is meeting with key stakeholders, including Sunshine Coast water supplier Unitywater, to identify processes which should reduce waiting times for water delivery trucks. We will also be working in close partnership with Unitywater to try and establish more large quantity filling points across the region to help commercial operators and speed up water deliveries to our community. All residents relying on water tank supplies should consider water saving measures in light of the continuing dry weather and the lengthy water resupply delays which are likely to continue. Red alert On the back of this water supply issue and the prolonged dry, I want to remind everyone that total fire bans remain in place across our region. Please be extra careful and vigilant in everything you do as there is a lot of potential fire fuel in our bushland areas at the moment. Sundale grants It’s with much pleasure yet again, that I sing the praises of the well-known

local identity known as Sundale. The Nambour Community was instrumental in the formation of Sundale, way back in 1963 and now its Sundale’s opportunity to give back with an extraordinary contribution of $1 million in setting up the Sundale Community Foundation. The capital within the Foundation will continue to grow, while the interest on the account will be made available to the Community. The Sundale Foundation is now offering opportunities for organisations in the Nambour and surrounding areas to apply for grants, from $1000 to $10,000. This is an outstanding opportunity for Nambour so I urge all interested parties to visit sundalecommunityfoundation. org.au for details and to see if you could be eligible for a grant. Eumundi Terraces The new & improved Eumundi Terraces are a credit to many parties including council, Anthony Wynne-Hoelscher from Experience Eumundi (ECCO), EDCA, EHA , local construction company Toobella Homes, landscape designers Guymer Bailey Architects, and structural engineers Callaghan and Toth who all worked together on this challenging project. To celebrate the completion of the terraces, an official opening is planned for around the end of October (on a non-market day). Watch this space for confirmation of dates and times.

Health HOW FITNESS AND POSITIVE M I N D S E T A R E H E L P I N G YO U T H

M E D I C I N E M I SA DV E N T U R E

Brooke Conlan, Personal Trainer, Eumundi

I often relay a story that involves my parents and their medicine misadventure. While now quite humorous, it could have been a lot more serious. Both of my parents are of the age where they take a number of medications on a daily basis, and live at home in a community setting. Mum organises both her own and Dad’s medications (and on this particular day the dog’s monthly heart worm tablet) by placing them beside the placemats at the breakfast table. I am pretty sure you can guess the rest! A panicked phone call to poisons information allayed all Mum’s fears, and Dad assures me there have been no lasting effects from taking the dog’s medication.

As a mum of a young daughter I can identify with the importance of raising happy, strong, empowered girls. A colleague and I have recently been working with a group of young women through a fitness and mentoring program, that’s aimed at helping build resilient, supportive and confident girls. The program helps girls to achieve a positive mindset through a variety of activities including boxing, circuit training, yoga and meditation, as well as art therapy and group discussions. The young ladies we have worked with have developed bonds within their group, gained more confidence and learned how to deal with stress, anxiety and other difficulties that youth are

faced with both within their peer groups and home environments. In the sessions we’ve also discussed the benefits of physical fitness for both mental and physical well-being and talked about good nutrition and lifestyle choices. We received a positive outcome and the girls we worked with were able to have a better understanding of how and why a healthy lifestyle is not only good for the body but a healthy mindset too! Brooke is currently running the fitness & mentoring program with teenagers through a local high school. NPS MedicineWise has recently released survey findings, suggesting that more than two million Australians may have exceeded the recommended daily dose of some widely used medicines. The survey, conducted by Galaxy Research, indicated that millions of Australians may be putting their health at risk by taking over-thecounter or prescription medicines unsafely and disregarding dosage instructions. There are many things that we can do to prevent the misuse of medicines. If there is confusion around what a medicine is for, or how to take it, ask your pharmacist or doctor. It is important to ask the right people

There are many practical aids to help manage your medicines. If people are on multiple medications, there is confusion around dose times or a person is missing doses, your pharmacist can advise you on a suitable medicine organiser. These have

Health separate compartments for the days of the week and/or times of day. There are some you fill yourself each day or week, or many pharmacies also offer blister packs (eg. Webster™ paks) filled by the pharmacist for a small fee. This will help you separate your medicines into the times and days you need to take them. These aids can make it easier to remember to take your medicines, and also help you remember if you’ve already taken them. Mistakes can also occur when people have trouble swallowing a tablet or capsule and they try to chew, crush, break or mix the tablet or capsule in food or drink. The reason is certain medications have a special release mechanism designed to slowly release a certain amount of medication over a given extended time. If the medication is altered or destroyed in any way, the medication can be released too fast and cause an undesirable effect. It is also important to dispose of out of date medicines as the stability of products can vary. A product which is stable in its container may become unstable once the container is opened.

Patients should be advised to store their medicines as recommended and to discard them after the expiry date. The hoarding of medicines is discouraged with the aim of minimising confusion and to ensure that the medication is working effectively.

Vegetable & Tofu Miso Soup

(Gluten free & vegan)

Wakiko Motoike, Doonan

As a child, my mother made miso soup for the family nearly every day. It is a traditional Japanese staple full of nutrients and probiotics, which can complement almost any Japanese meal. Each year, I make my own batch of miso paste so I can continue enjoying miso soup with my own family and provide a little sense of connection to my Japanese heritage through cooking. I also use my own komnbu stock. I keep a jar of this in the fridge (at home and at Sunspace Café) so it is ready to be used at any time. It can be used for other dishes too, not just miso soup. Komnbu is full of minerals and nutrients such as calcium, iron and iodine.

Miso Method

Miso paste is made from fermented beans - usually soy beans. To make my miso paste, I use cooked soy beans, salt, and koji (which is a type of starter). I used a rice starter which I made one year ago. These ingredients are all mashed together. Once you make your miso paste, you will get variations of colour and flavour depending on how long you age it before using it. The longer it ages the deeper the colour and stronger the flavour. So the same batch of miso will change over time. The miso I used for this recipe had been aged for a year. Miso soup can be made with many different vegetables - whatever you have in your fridge!

Add carrot and zucchini.

Ingredients 100 g sliced onion 50 g chopped carrot 120 g chopped zucchini 1/2 cup chopped greens such as spinach, kale or silverbeet

Kombu Method

100 g tofu, cubed

How to make kombu (dried kelp) stock:

8 cup komnbu stock 120 g miso paste A small knob of ginger, grated

Place a 15 cm piece of komnbu in 8 cups of water.

Chopped chives or spring onions for garnish

Let it soak for 8 hours or more.

JAPANESE SPRING FESTIVAL ENJOY A LITTLE JAPANESE CULTURE AT THE JAPANESE SPRING FESTIVAL ON 14 - 15 OCTOBER, AT SUNSPACE CAFÉ ON BEDDINGTON RD, DOONAN.

Once carrot and zucchini are cooked, add tofu and greens and simmer until cooked. Turn off the heat. Add miso paste. It’s easier to dissolve miso paste little by little in a ladle with warm stock. Do not boil the miso soup once the miso paste is added. Serve in a bowl and garnish with chives.

Heritage EUMUNDI ROCKS 50 YEARS Wendy Birrell, Discover Eumundi Manager An enthusiastic crowd attended Eumundi Rocks around the Clock with guest star Little Pattie at the Eumundi School of Arts hall recently. It was a great celebration of the continuing use of the hall and the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast, as Little Pattie, the Doo Wop Dolls and the Blue Suede band rocked the hall.

Photos thanks to Owen Lyell of Bullet Photography, Doonan.

D I S COV E R E U M U N D I I N T H E 1 9 6 0 S We had a great turnout at Wan’din’in arts space for the opening of the exhibition Discover Eumundi in the 1960’s, which continues until mid-October. Centre stage in the somewhat nostalgic display of photos and objects from the 1960’s is the Eumundi Telephone Exchange which operated from the Eumundi post office from 1938 to 1977. A great exhibition to bring the kids to as there are a number of interactive activities and the headphones on the exchange are proving very popular with visitors young and old who are keen to take a few minutes to listen to stories from people who actually operated the exchange.

Nature Play It’s a topic we’ve heard a lot about recently. Nature Play: letting kids get out and explore the outside world. Today there are so many plastic toy options cheaply available. A trip to any op shop will show you that we are drowning in a sea of flimsy, flashy, noisy toys! Kids love them sure, but if you put a child in a natural environment they will use their amazing imaginations to dream up an amazing world. Climbing trees, making mud pies, building cubby houses, forts, castles, and fairy gardens; this is where children can connect with the environment and grow into resilient, healthy and creative humans. Remember doing this as a child? I bet a lot of adults reading this will recall a favourite tree they spent a lot of time in? What’s not to love about being in the outdoors? Sure there are snakes and spiders, deadly ones too! But if we teach our children to love and respect all plants, animals and the environment, then we are training them up to be caring guardians of our amazing, beautiful planet. A must for the future of life on earth! Our next working bee will be an exciting event! We will be hosting a family and community planting with a focus on families bringing their kids along. Tucker Planting will be held on Sunday 26 November. We will be doing the first phase planting in Eumundi’s Sunken garden which is implementing a wildlife attracting native garden that incorporates a Bush tucker trail with sensory plants such as sight, touch and smell. We are seeking volunteers to bring their families and to also hopefully get the chance to help other children and their families dig the holes, plant and water as well as weeding and watering the existing revegetation. Hopefully this will bring a lot more community interest, involvement, volunteers and in general people enjoying this lovely bushland reserve.

Check out our Facebook page for more detail or contact Kim kimmorris@ bushlandconservation.com.au The next Eumundi Bushcare working bee in the Sunken Garden at Pacey St will be on Sunday 22 October, 8.30am to 11am. Morning Tea provided. All welcome!

IDENTIFYING SNAKES Spring is definitely here, and with it comes the re-emergence of snakes from their winter brumation. Australia has a large variety of snakes that have adapted to live in an equally large variety of habitats. Venomous and non-venomous, large and small, diurnal and nocturnal—here on the Sunshine Coast we have our fair share of all of them. Snakes play a very important role in the ecosystem. Being middle-order predators, they keep numbers of their prey species— including some pest species like rats and mice— under control. They are also an important food source for other wildlife such as birds of prey. Contrary to what you may have

Nathan Bignell, Licensed snake catcher, Belli Park

heard, snakes are not aggressive, and will flee when possible. If cornered though, they will become defensive - which is understandable if you think your life is in danger. Identifying snakes can be very difficult, as they can vary greatly in colour within the same species, and throughout their lives. Eastern Brown snakes, for instance, are often born with dark bands along their body, which usually disappear over time. Adult specimens can be anything from a light brown to almost black, with some even retaining the darker bands in adulthood. Some species look similar, but are very different snakes. On the Sunshine Coast, a classic

example of this is the Keelback and the Rough-scaled snake. Both snakes look virtually identical to the untrained eye, but they couldn’t be more different—the keelback is rearfanged and harmless, and the Rough-scaled is front-fanged and highly venomous. They live in similar environments, and hunt similar prey, but one big exception is that the Keelback can successfully prey on Cane Toads—a very handy snake to have around! Given the difficulties in identifying snakes, leaving them alone and admiring from afar is always the best option. If you’re not into admiring snakes though (and, let’s face it, most people aren’t), the best way to deter snakes from around your home is to remove any piles of junk and debris on your property. Snakes—and tasty rats and mice—love to live in large piles of timber, sheets of corrugated iron and the like. If you do see a snake and feel you need it removed, don’t try and catch it yourself—call a qualified snake catcher to relocate it for you. Most snake bites occur when people try to kill or relocate snakes themselves. Like most other animals though, if you just let them go about their business they will leave you alone, and your garden will be better off for it. 0475 205 024

L AT E S T DA M LEVELS The Sunshine Coast Grid Twelve dam capacity as of 28 Sept was 1,561,508ml with full supply capacity being 2,197,102ml – which translates to 71.1% full. The Grid Twelve is made up of the 12 South East Qld dams: Wivenhoe, Somerset, North Pine, Hinze, Baroon Pocket, Leslie Harrison, Ewen Maddock, Cooloolabin, Lake Kurwongbah, Lake Macdonald, Little Nerang and Wappa. When the drinking-water supply level of these 12 dams reaches 70% Seqwater will formulate its drought response plan. Water restrictions were enforced during 2005-2013, when residents were limited to 140 litres per person a day Seqwater would introduce this limitation again if dam levels hit 50%.

VALE DOROTHY SEIB The Seib Family of Eumundi lost their big sister Dorothy, aged ninety-two years, on 20 August. She was born 11 Nov 1924, and spent the last years of school at Eumundi in the same class with Daphne Greer (nee Lait). Dorothy was the eldest child of four to Edwin and Annie Seib, then came sisters Edna, Mona, and brother Colin - who still lives in the family home on Seib Rd. Dorothy and Edna started school at Verrierdale when it opened again after WW1. At that time Grade 7 children would travel to Pomona Rural school where the girls would be taught sewing and cooking, and boys manual arts. Dorothy sewed all of our cloths during the war years on an old Singer treadle sewing machine. She even made our wedding dresses and ball gowns. Dorothy and Edna (The Seib girls) were part of a younger set who baked fruit cakes, wrapped them in hessian and sent them to the soldiers during WW2. Their hobbies were dancing, playing tennis and basketball. When of age, Dorothy and Edna left home in

Eumundi to work in Brisbane. Dorothy worked as a seamstress and Edna worked with Postmaster-General’s Department (PMG) [which was responsible for postal and telegraphic services]. Their last trip to Eumundi together with myself - their sister Mona - was to the Verrierdale 100 year celebrations. Dorothy was the oldest student there! I want to say thank you to all the people who went to so much effect to put on this reunion, we left with many happy memories. Mona Mitchell (nee Seib), formerly of Eumundi.
