Creative Gen exhibition

It’s that time of year again when we get to view the best works from up and coming young artists from schools from Bundaberg to Nambour. The exhibition – Creative Gen – is one of the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre’s most popular exhibitions. It covers a broad range of mediums and features many installations and quality 2D and 3D works. The exhibition runs from 4-27 October.

Whilst new young student artwork is packed into the downstairs spaces, the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre gives new life to old artworks in its New Homes for Old Art exhibition in the top floor gallery. This exhibition features works from people’s personal collections that they no longer wish to hang or may even want to sell for some spare cash. It features copies and work by famous artists like John Lennon, Arthur Boyd and Sir Sidney Nolan as well as a range of landscape paintings and ceramics. This exhibition will run from 4 October to 1 December.

Propagation Workshop

The Aussie Bird Count

The Aussie Bird Count is on again from 1420 October. Run by BirdLife Australia – a bird conservation charity responsible for protecting native birds – it is a great opportunity to help keep count of our amazing Australian avian friends.

Download the app, set aside 20 minutes per day to grab a cuppa, find a nice spot with a view to a garden, and identify and count the birds you see. App guides will help you to tell if it’s a currawong, cockatoo, kookaburra or the famous ‘Bin Chicken’ (really an ibis).

As you learn about the birds in your area, you start to recognise them by their calls, like the magpie’s warble, the duet of the whip birds, or the raucous call of the cat bird. You can make the count part of your daily walk through woodland, an urban park, the Noosa Botanic Gardens wetland, or along our beautiful seashore… anywhere you will find birds.

Each participant has a chance to win a birding camera package to the value of $5,798. Register: aussiebirdcount.org.au.

Yandina Community Gardens will be hosting a Propagation Workshop on 19 October from 9-11am. Tickets are $25 for members and $35 for non-members available from 5 October at the Blue House, on the corner of North St and Farrell St, Yandina or visit yandinacommunitygardens.com.au.

COMMUNITY

CWA records currently stored in the hall office.

CWA Eumundi Hall has been well loved and respected by several generations, new community members and admired by visitors.

Eumundi CWA Hall to receive a facelift

Eumundi CWA Hall is set to receive a facelift, after grant funding of $47,000 was recently received through the Gambling Community Benefit Fund (GCBF). The funding will replace the hall’s damaged and non-compliant entrance ramp.

The new renovations will complement the Eumundi streetscaping project, with the hall also set to be repainted outside in mid-October and inside in 2025, in preparation for Eumundi CWA’s 100th celebrations in 2027. Bruff Painting Contractors will paint the hall as part of their community service program which will cover over 70% of the costs through donation of their painters, suppliers and subcontractors. Local paint and finishes company Rockcote have offered all the paint for the interior.

The CWA Hall has attracted funding from a variety of sources over the last few years. A Premier’s Grant for QCWA halls for $35,000 in 2022 enabled the foundations to be restored, rear stairs widened with a new landing and handrails, and three new awnings.

The GCBF is Qld’s largest one-off community grants program and distributes approximately $60M each year to not-for-profit community groups. The funding helps these groups to provide services, leisure activities and opportunities for Qld communities.

The Eumundi and District Historical Association (EHA) has kindly shared the cost of the plans of the CWA Hall – as no plans previously existed. A copy now resides at the Eumundi Museum. The Eumundi Museum is also planning to collaborate with Eumundi CWA to record almost 100 years of

Soon the building will reflect that deep affection, as donations from council, state initiatives, local associations, groups, businesses and individuals come together to create a fresh new look that maintains the hall’s heritage integrity. The newly refurbished hall will soon sit in a refreshed Memorial Dr, ready for its next century of service to its community especially in matters that affect women and families.

Welcome Experience Eumundi’s new manager

Experience Eumundi – the not-for-profit organisation which manages market carparking – has welcomed Mark Cameron as its new general manager. Mark will be responsible for assisting the Experience Eumundi board to implement its new strategy for the organisation.

Mark has a strong track record in improving business performance and driving transformative growth across multiple industries and regions across Australia and the UK. He is deeply committed to community initiatives, having founded projects such as Salty Saturdays, the Good Vibrations Retro Festival and Plastic Free Coolum. His family also operates a small group of accommodation businesses in the region.

Mark said, “These roles have allowed me to combine my passion for business with a strong desire to give back to the community, driving positive change through collaboration and innovation.”

Coast charity celebrates

A charity founded by a Sunshine Coast mother and daughter is preparing to celebrate 5 years of saving the lives of young people who have experienced sexual abuse.

Founded in 2019 by Annie Jones – a survivor of child sexual abuse – and her mother Tracey Morris, No More Fake Smiles is a nationally registered charity that provides a safe and supportive environment for children and youth

aged 0-24 to heal from the trauma of sexual abuse.

Annie and Tracey use their lived experience to create a compassionate, trauma-informed approach tailored to each victim’s needs. No More Fake Smiles has provided 315 hours of comprehensive support this year alone to numerous children and youth aged 4 to 24.

The statistics are heartbreaking. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics Recorded Crime 2023 Report, there were 36,318 victims of sexual assault recorded in Australia last year. Around 2 in 5 of those victims were children aged between 10 and 17 at the date of the incident.

“We are working to eradicate the stigma surrounding child sexual abuse, enhance protection and respect for affected children, and advocate for systemic changes to safeguard and support these vulnerable individuals,” said Annie.

Their tireless work – which is solely funded by generous donations from the community – has been recognised by the Qld Police Service as an official referral service for the Brisbane Local Area Command.

You can support No More Fake Smiles and celebrate Mental Health Week at the 5th Birthday Celebration on 5 October from 5.30pm at the Bli Bli Hotel.

The event features a cocktail on arrival, twocourse dinner and live entertainment. Tickets are $129 at nomorefakesmiles.com.au/5thbirthday-celebration. If you cannot make it to the event, you can donate at nomorefakesmiles. com.au/donate.

Face-off to save lives

"You came into my life full of energy. You're my mate, my friend now my guardian. In the short time we’ve know each other you've made my life enjoyable. I can eat out with my partner, navigate the shops and live a normal life like so many others have. Tears well as I write about you because I don’t think you'll ever know just how much you have impacted my life. The joy, the security the constant eye over me." (A returned veteran’s words to his mate – a dog trained by PTSD Dogs Australia.)

Every 2 weeks a veteran commits suicide and every 4 weeks a first responder dies. Angie Weeks sought a therapy dog to assist husband Roger’s Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). A dog costs $40,000 and 4 years to train to respond to the sufferer’s specific symptoms. This led to the establishment of PTSD Dogs Australia who have now rescued over 26 dogs from shelters and matched them with 26 humans who together are discovering new, meaningful lives.

with Azura Building Group?

The organisation donates 95% of funds into training and handling while 5% covers administrative services and running costs.

Despite winning the Veterans Employment Award in 2023, Australian CEO of the Year for Global Excellence in 2023, the Prime Minister’s National Veterans’ Partner Entrepreneur of 2023 and currently a finalist for this year’s Telstra Best of Business Qld Health Champions Award, fundraising is an ongoing project. There are currently several dogs in training which require food, vaccinations, foster care and working together with their new owner.

Notwithstanding the daunting cost and time involved, the transformative impact these dogs have for PTSD sufferers is immeasurable.

To celebrate World Mental Health Day a free “Face-off” event at Land and Sea Brewing Company, Noosaville will be held on 10 October at 6pm. Several volunteers will shave or colour heads and beards in exchange for monetary donations.

You can sign up to join in or come along to support. There will be music, raffles and the chance to meet dogs and humans who now find purpose in life. To participate visit: ptsddogs.org. au/face-off/or for free tickets t.ly/gn77r. Eileen Walder

ART ABOUT

Colourful and creative takeover of Cooran

From the opening of the Tall Trees Art Exhibition on Saturday morning to the close on Sunday afternoon the Noosa hinterland village of Cooran was buzzing with the fabulous welcoming vibe of this annual community event.

A total of 10 venues along the main street showcased a great variety of artworks from Sunshine Coast and Noosa hinterland artists. The transformation of the historic Cooran Hall into a well curated gallery was something to behold. There was something for everyone besides the great artwork, from live music up and down the street, a mini art market and kids activities in Pioneer Park, kids heritage trail, guided heritage town walk, poetry and story slams in the Cooran Brewery.

One visitor commented, “It was very enjoyable to wander along the street to the various venues. The stalls in the park were interesting, and the music in the various venues was a very nice addition. There were some peaceful and relaxing places to take in the works of art, but

the brewery was pumping if you were after a different vibe.”

A highlight of the event was a live portrait painting session in oils each day by Boreen Point artist Ellenie Faith Kirkman which saw close likenesses of both models emerge in just a few hours from the blank canvases by this talented 17yo.

The Saturday evening get together was well attended with an inspiring wearable art fashion parade inside followed by some great music by Groove Union outside with large images of artworks entered into the exhibition projected

onto the hall and a large tent. With food and drinks available and a kids fluro pen drawing activity, many families settled in picnic style to have a great night out.

At the closing event several prizes and awards were announced including the People’s Choice award of $250. Winner Keisha Sunderland won the prize and one of her two interested artworks sold earlier in the day.

Winner of the Eumundi Voice Youth Prize was 15yo Jozi Pride who was awarded a Highly Commended prize last year. She was inspired to enter her work after being part of the first Small Trees exhibition in 2021 for 6-12yo.

Wendy Birrell spokesperson for Tall Trees Art Inc. which brings this event to the community, stated that, “The return of our much loved event in 2023 was a triumph and this year's event was another great success with a few new additions

to the program and more prizes and awards for artists.”

The visitor survey is open until 13 October with a chance to win $100. All feedback will greatly assist in planning for 2025. Visit: talltreesart.com.

Eco cabins proposal

An application has been lodged with SCC for 8 stand-alone cabins at Alsahwa Estate. The property is located on 15 hectares of exmacadamia farm zoned rural on Sudholz Road, Verrierdale.

A town planning report by RG Strategic, on behalf of the owner Jo Walker’s company Voyager Retreat Pty Ltd, says the proposal has been designed to minimise disturbance on vegetation, use previously cleared land and avoid koala habitat. The report states the cabins would be “seamlessly nestled within the rural landscape to create a harmonious and wellintegrated environment.”

The cabins would accommodate up to 32 people in total on the eastern side of the property with each of the cabins proposed to have two bedrooms, a kitchen, living area, deck and pool. Guests would be encouraged to use ancillary facilities such as a 24/7 gym, treatment rooms, pool, health hub, food and beverage services, and viewing deck.

Access is proposed from the existing driveway to a total 30 car parks – 16 for guests and 14 for staff – plus two accessible spaces separated by a loading area. Golf buggies would be available for people to get around the site and there would also be meandering walking paths.

The report says any noise would be managed by the use of natural materials, such as crushed granite on driving surfaces, as well as space and vegetated buffers, and the ancillary facilities would be compatible with a rural setting, supporting rural enterprises and tourism. The integration of cabins into the landscape “aims to contribute positively to the appreciation of the natural environment, avoiding significant effects on rural amenity”. Visit: t.ly/AbL-c.

Backing onto the Bush workshop

A Backing onto the Bush workshop was held recently at Valdora Hall. About 50 people from Doonan, Ninderry, Verrierdale and Valdora attended. It was an informative session with presentations and demonstrations from Healthy Land and Water, council and Valdora Yandina Creek Rural Fire Brigade. It was an opportunity to share details about council’s bushfire management program and how to prepare for bushfires on their own properties. You can check your own home’s level of bushfire risk using the post code checker on the Qld Fire Department’s website.

Road upgrade projects

In the coming months, you may see various contractors onsite surveying, locating underground services, counting traffic, and carrying out environmental or geotechnical assessments at Youngs Dr, Doonan and Valdora Rd and Thomson Valley Rd, Valdora.

At Youngs Dr, Doonan council is investigating

solutions to improve safety between Duke Rd and Marnie Cres/Noakes Rd. When it’s ready a concept design of the proposed solution will be circulated for feedback.

Over at Valdora, council is looking at options to upgrade the intersection of Valdora Rd and Thomson Valley Rd so that it can accommodate larger vehicles turning into Thomson Valley Rd, as well as improve vehicle safety on Valdora Rd.

The upgrade will likely include realigning Thomson Valley Rd at the intersection, regulatory signage, drainage structures, line marking and bus shelter relocation. If you have any feedback on either of these projects, please email council’s project team at DesignServices@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

As always, if you have any issues or suggestions to discuss, please contact me on 5475 9810 or maria. suarez@sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au.

Kindness Club member Daisy said, “It's good to help animals as well as people. Dogs comfort people and are really good to their human families. They deserve extra kindness.”

The toys, placed at Jamaica Blue Cooroy, serve as a heartfelt gesture of love and appreciation for “four-legged fur angels.” #KindnessCount Kindness Club!

Cubby house built with community help

School Holiday projects are a load of fun, and even better when the community contributes. A local nineyear old boy started building a cubby house during the last school holidays. Thanks to the contributions of kind community members from Pomona, Cooroy and Eumundi, the Cubby has now been completed.

Kindness came in the form of cladding, windows, and a sheet of Colorbond for the roof. Along with some great advice, a paw paw and some honey! All items were donated, so he has decided to pay it forward by donating some food items to the Cooroy Community Food Pantry.

#Kindness Counts award nominations

We are looking for people doing kind deeds to share, cheer and celebrate at the

#KindnessCounts Awards in Eumundi on 17 November.

Nominations can be for kind acts of any kind and any size. Visit: bit.ly/KCPNominationForm. Nominations close 5pm 8 November.

HEALTH

Rhythm and life

There is a sense of rhythm in everyone from the way we stack the dishes to stroking a pet or smoothing out crumpled clothes.

This rhythm is essential to our balance and coordination, and hence to our sense of wellbeing. Perhaps our best example of rhythm,

balance and coordination can be seen in the act of walking. Whether it be a leisurely stroll, stepping out or marching along, it feels good. And dancing is an extension of that ability. Most people love to dance – who hasn’t shimmied, discoed or just jigged around at some time in their life?

As we age, we may lose our sense of rhythm and coordination due to wear and tear, from injury or from disease, but this does not necessarily mean we are destined to a life of shuffle and trip. Exercises in dance moves can improve or restore that sense of rhythm and balance that we value.

Dance and exercise classes specially programmed for older people are now more readily available than ever. Dance for Joy Eumundi meets in the CWA Hall, Memorial Dr on Mondays with a new starting time from the 14 October of 10am.

Our seated and standing dance and stretch routines are specially programmed to help you improve your balance and coordination, and your first session is free, so why not give it a try? Contact Philippa on 0417 780 016.

I live in Maroochy River with my partner, Lurline, and feel so lucky to call this beautiful place home. We need a local representative making sure Ninderry gets its fair share.

Ninderry needs a fresh approach, and fresh energy to meet the challenges our community faces.

I believe I am what Ninderry needs and that I have the experience and drive to get things done!

Local heroes welcomed home

Sporting legends, families and invited supporters gathered on 16 September at the Maroochydore Surf Club to show their pride and thanks to our 41 Olympic and Paralympic athletes who live or train on the Sunshine Coast.

Hosted by Sunshine Coast Region 2032 Sports Legacy Taskforce, each athlete received a commemorative plaque. Their personal stories, struggles and achievements were revealed during interviews with former Olympic boxer Benny Pike, who began the ‘Welcome Home’ event in 1984 with MC sports broadcaster John McCoy. Among those present were the 4 original 1984 Sunshine Coast Olympians: Hayden Kenny, kayaker; Russell Sherwell and Julian Muspratt, water polo; and Rick Finch; boxing.

Former Brisbane Lord Mayor Sallyanne Atkinson placed bids for this region to host the Olympics in 1992, 1996, and 2000 when it went to Sydney, and is thrilled we will host the games in 2032.

Olympic swimmer Dawn Fraser holds 8 Olympic medals, 39 records and was named the World’s

Greatest Living Female Water Sports Champion in 2000 by the International Olympic Committee. Now a Noosa resident, she mentored many of the young athletes including goddaughter and relay gold medallist Lani Pallister and Swimmer of the Year, Kaylee McKeown. Dawn said, “The Coast athletes were an inspiration to youngsters.” Alexa Leary was in a coma 3 years ago and not expected to live after a terrible cycling accident. She won gold in the 100m freestyle and another as anchor of the mixed medley relay, which included Callum Simpson. Alexa dived in 6 seconds behind the Dutch swimmer. Unbelievably she powered her way to an Olympic record and gold for the team.

Kaylee’s mother Sharon accepted the Clint Robinson Perpetual Trophy for Best Olympic Performance 2024 on behalf of her absent daughter. Sharon said, “The importance of support for athletes even when they may not win, cannot be overstated. They work through

constant pressure, make incredible sacrifices in their personal life, pushing their bodies and mental health to achieve, and people expect them always to win.”

The Brendan Burkett Perpetual Trophy for best Paralympian 2024 went to 17yo swimmer

Callum Simpson, who won 2 gold and 1 silver medal. Proud father Nigel captained the English Rugby 7s team for many years.

Sunshine Coast University now has a sporting excellence programme including disabled athletes. The new Olympic Chef de Mission Bridie Kean is USC lecturer and an Olympic wheelchair medallist.

ON THIS DAY

Bypasses and road safety

Why is there so much interest in the anticipated opening of the Gympie Bypass in October? One big reason is road safety.

The Bruce Highway is Qld’s longest road, stretching 1,679km from Brisbane to Cairns.

PUMP REPAIR SERVICES

1,398km of the Bruce Highway from Gympie to Cairns remains single-lane and undivided, leading to an average per km travelled fatal-andserious-injury (FSI) crash rate 3 times higher than rural sections of the Pacific Highway and 5 times higher than rural sections of the Hume Highway. The opening of the 26km Gympie to Curra bypass with its dual carriageway will lessen those statistics but the Bruce Highway overall still has a 2-star infrastructure safety rating, compared to interstate highways with either 3, 4 or 5 star ratings.

The Cooroy to Woondum section of the Bruce Highway has been dual carriageway since 2018 and now has a similar FSI crash rate to rural sections of the Pacific and Hume, which means it’s five times lower than the single lane, undivided sections of the Bruce. RACQ’s analysis of AusRAP crash data between 2018-2022 shows upgrades, including the installation of dual carriageways on the Hume and Pacific Highways, have almost eliminated the head-on crash risk –the crash type in over half (81) of fatalities on the Bruce Highway.
