The highly anticipated Great Noosa Trail Walk (GNTW) has wrapped up again for another year with over 250 walkers gaining a unique perspective and appreciation for the Noosa hinterland on the leisurely, self-guided walk.

The GNTW traverses the hinterland towns of Cooroy, Kin Kin, Cooran and Pomona through a series of 56km of walking trails along the Noosa Trail network. The trails meander through farmland, natural forests and feature spectacular lookouts with views through to the ocean. This year’s event was extremely popular, selling out

almost 2 months after registrations opened in February.

The event began 12yrs ago as a small-scale event organised by local walker and trail enthusiast Shaun Walsh. This year marks the 10th GNTW, due to two walks being cancelled. One event was cancelled due to bushfire risk and the other during the Covid pandemic.

Shaun is still heavily involved and leads the 25 volunteer guides who assist on the trail throughout the event. He has walked the trails since the early 1990s and started the Cont. p3

“It is rare to have day walking trails that link our villages in Australia. It is common in Europe but not here,” said Shaun.

Cooroy Future Group Inc. now hosts the event which has grown to offer both one and threeday walking opportunities with many walkers returning each year.

The experience is supported by a variety of local community groups, such as the Rotary Club of Eumundi who provide logistics support with luggage. The GNTW offers a vital opportunity for local clubs and organisations to raise much-needed funds to support their activities.

Eumundi Rotary has assisted with 8 events, raising over $23,000 in funds which have been used to support the club's youth programs.

Other community and sporting groups provide hot meals and morning tea along the walk. The event also generates a much-needed boost to local businesses with local hinterland

Shaun said, “I am extremely proud of the community involvement and profit model established for this event. It represents a good model of sustainable tourism as the community are inherently involved in the event.”

Meet the candidates

Hinterland Matters and the Eumundi Residents Assn organised a meeting of candidates for Ninderry on 9 October with sitting member Dan Purdie (LNP), Jo Justo (ALP) and Tim Nixon (Legalise Cannabis Qld). Tom Carden (Greens) and Michael Stewart (One Nation) were unable to attend.

Over 50 locals attended the forum at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi. Key issues raised by the audience included poor public transport around Ninderry and poor rail connections on the Coast. Jo Justo said it was the number one issue raised with her in meetings in the electorate. Dan Purdie said as Shadow Minister for Policing and a former detective, he would prioritise giving police the numbers and authority to reverse the rise in crime in Qld. Tim Nixon said both major parties had stalled for years on key issues and a vote for him was a vote for change and putting the community in charge.

Other issues raised included the benefit of having community use of the land at the former House with No Steps site in Doonan, reassurance that there would be no nuclear power plant in Ninderry, the need to eradicate fire ants, support from candidates to retain abortion and voluntary assisted dying (VAD) laws, building of the longawaited Seib Road pedestrian bridge, resolution of land use at Blue Heart Sunshine Coast, and finding a balance between tourism and local residents’ needs.

Meet Jo Justo

I live in Maroochy River with my life partner Lurline and have seen the growth the Sunshine Coast community has experienced in recent years and understand that we need investment in infrastructure to support change whilst also maintaining the unique character of our lifestyle. As an active community member, I have always been passionate about getting results for my community. With a Bachelor of Social Science (Human Services) and a wide working experience from farming, women’s refuges and defending workers’ rights to small businesses and many community volunteer roles, I have a long track record of standing up for what is right and sorting out what needs to be fixed.

By keeping energy assets in public hands and making multinational mining companies pay their fair share by increasing coal royalties we can responsibly provide for sensible cost-of-living relief through free kindy and TAFE, the 20% discount on registration, 50c Fares and $1,000 to cover the cost of first year apprentice’s tools and much more.

Premier Steven Miles took very strong actions to protect the environment, boosting the purchase of lands for environmental protection locally and supporting our own local biosphere. I am proud to be a part of a team that understands tackling climate change is a priority and our Energy and Jobs Plan means that we are taking our responsibility seriously.

I believe in a fair go and in proper collaboration.

BUSINESS NEWS

Passion and innovation drive

success

Local Eumundi business owners at Laguna Pest Control – Jay and Nicky Turner – have once again been nominated as finalists in the prestigious 2024 Sunshine Coast Business Awards (SCBA).

Laguna Pest Control are a multi-award-winning business, previously winning the SCBA Trades and Services Award in 2017, 2018 and 2023. Additionally, they have been recognised as multi-award winners in the pest industry over

the years, including the prestigious Australian Pest Manager of the Year.

A unique feature that has caught the attention of judges is their groundbreaking No Spray program, an initiative that emphasises environmentally friendly practices.

A further testament to their commitment to the environment is the Laguna Rescue Honey initiative. Instead of killing bees, Jay and Nicky often relocate hives to their custom-made flow hives. The honey produced from these rescue bees is then gifted to their most loyal clients, reinforcing their philosophy that Laguna is not just about pest control – it's about coexistence and care for the environment.

The business couple are fuelled by a passion for both their craft and the community they serve.

"Success isn’t just about numbers, it's about the relationships we build and the trust we earn within our community," said Jay Turner.

"Our loyal team of 10 and our innovative approach set us apart. We're not just another pest control service, we're part of the fabric of this community."

Over the past three years, Jay and Nicky have also redirected some of their focus to their popular Pestie Profiles Podcast, where they provide valuable insights, pest prevention tips, and advice for homeowners dealing with termites and common household pests.

Laguna Pest Control is a family-run business with their 26yo daughter, Wilara, serving as the office manager and their 23yo son a qualified pest technician in training for the operations manager role.

The journey of Laguna Pest Control began in 2010 when Jay and Nicky started the business from humble beginnings in Noosa. Jay's background in teaching pest control at TAFE and his degree in biological sciences and entomology, combine passion with expertise to ensure the highest quality service.

Operating solely in Eumundi-Noosa and the surrounding areas, they remain committed to maintaining a small, family-oriented approach while delivering exceptional service. Visit: lagunapestcontrol.com.au.

Early detection saves lives

You may have noticed a plethora of pink popping up around the place. Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) takes place throughout October and Wear it Pink events present an opportunity for individuals, schools, workplaces and communities to unite by wearing pink clothing or accessories to show their support for breast cancer awareness and research.

The events shine a light on the devastating impact breast cancer has on thousands of Australians each day. Approximately 17,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in Australia, and it remains the most common cancer among Australian women (excluding non-melanoma skin cancer).

Despite survival rates continuing to improve it is still important to be breast aware as early detection saves lives. People of all ages should

be familiar with the normal look and feel of their breasts. If you notice any of these changes always seek medical advice:

• A new lump or lumpiness, especially if it is only in one breast.

• A change in the size or shape of your breast

• A change to the nipple, such as crusting, ulcer, redness or inversion

• A nipple discharge that occurs without squeezing

• A change in the skin of your breast such as redness or dimpling

• An unusual pain that does not go away.

Other factors that can reduce breast cancer risk are avoiding excess weight gain, being physically active on most or all days of the week, a healthy diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables and limiting alcohol use.

For more information visit: t.ly/8SQec.

Congratulation to Sgt Ryan Hanlon who has been successful in transferring to Cooroy Police Station as the Officer in Charge. Ryan has served the Eumundi Police Division well over the last 5yrs and we thank him for his service to the community. Ryan is not completely lost to Eumundi, as we are now closely working with the Cooroy Police Division to provide a better service to both communities. Ryan will always have a soft spot for Eumundi, so we know he will still be looking out for us when he is working.

The Office in Charge position is currently vacant until a suitable replacement can be found. My name is Sgt Nic Van Der Maat, and I have been fortunate enough to be positioned at Eumundi for the next 3 months as Officer in Charge. I have previously worked for the last 20yrs as General Duties Officer in Noosa Heads with a short stint from 2018-2020 at the Pomona Police Station. Although I am not a Eumundi local, I know the area well and have attended many jobs and

provided after hours patrols in the area.

Ryan and the current officers at the Eumundi Police Station have been doing a great job, so I have no plans to change anything in the immediate future. However, with change comes the chance for improvements so please reach out and let us know if there are things we can do better.

As for policing during September, Eumundi Police Division had 188 calls for service ranging from traffic crashes, intruder alarms, to personal and relationship crises. As we approach the festive season, we prepare ourselves for an increase in calls for service.

Domestic incidents remained steady with 17 matters where police attended and assisted. Some of these matters were minor in nature and long gone are the days where police just locked people up. With many of these matters, those involved didn’t know where to get help, so Eumundi Police were able to assist.

It is pleasing to see that only 3 drink drivers were detected and 3 picked up for driving

with a relevant drug in their system –methamphetamines, cannabis or cocaine. These 6 people will face the Noosa Magistrates Court over the next month and spend time off the road as there is a mandatory disqualification of a driver’s licence associated with these offences.

Traffic issues continue in and around Eumundi State School and Blair, Dave and Gary have been out in force since the start of school. If you are driving near the school during school times, please take a moment and slow down. These

few seconds could save a life. Also remember if you are picking up your children, please use the parking available. The areas where parking is not permitted is there for a reason – again it may save a life.

Finally, I would like to remind you that October is Mental Health Month (5-13 October) which shines a spotlight on individual and community mental health. Even though this week may have passed, as a small tight community we need to look out for each other. If you or someone you know is struggling with mental ill health and do not know where to turn, please reach out to us. Although we are far from experts in this field we know where help can be found.

That’s it from us here at Eumundi Police. Stay safe and look after yourself and your loved ones.

R4MH attend Hinterland Health Expo

Over 200 visitors attended the Hinterland Health Expo on 27 September with 36 exhibitors displaying their goods and services to anyone wanting to improve their health. There were displays of Taekwondo and belly-dancing featured.

Among the exhibitors, Rotarians for Mental

Health (R4MH) showed off their Say No to Domestic Violence T-shirts and informed attendees of Rotary’s campaign of awareness of mental health in our communities.

Visitors to the display openly showed their knowledge of the problem and enquired into ways they might help address domestic and family violence.

Tex Pipke encourages everyone to wear the shirt on Fridays each week. “When you meet others who wear the shirt, they will engage with you and the conversation will be enlarged. Who knows, you may even make new friends,” said Tex.

DAY TRIPS FOR FAMILIES

Qld Air Museum

In a recent visit to the Qld Air Museum in Caloundra, I took the grandson of a friend who is hoping to join the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) but unsure in what capacity. The visit was eye opening as he was able to ask questions and get a feel for what it would be like to have a career around aircraft. I have not visited the museum for many years and it was impressive to see how professionally managed it was, increasing in size and catering for all kinds of visitors.

Another friend visiting for a 50yr reunion of his RAAF pilot’s course, expressed that the highlight of his 3-day reunion was the trip to the museum where one of the reunion members was a volunteer. He organised a personalised tour, going over the two-trainer aircraft they learnt to fly in before finishing the tour at Australia’s oldest DC-3 with champagne, seafood and a lot of old tales told.

The Qld Air Museum is Australia’s largest and most diverse historic aviation display. Located in Caloundra, it began life in 1974 in Brisbane with one Canberra Bomber. The display was then moved to the Sunshine Coast due to its proximity to the new Brisbane airport expansion. The current museum was officially opened in 1987 by Mrs Ly Bennett – wife of Air Vice Marshall Don Bennett – the Qld born founder of the WWII Pathfinder Bomber Force.

It was established with a view to preserving Australia’s Aviation heritage and now has almost 100 historically significant aircraft and many other aviation-related displays. Aircraft were acquired from all over, including Britain and

Singapore.

The museum opens to the public every day of the year except for Christmas Day and visitors can roam around the facility by themselves, however I would strongly advise to book a guide – usually an experienced aviator or someone who has a lot of experience around aircraft. They can give you a good overview of what

the aircraft were used for, what they were like to fly, along with some good old “war stories”. Group tours can be booked via the website and the facility is an ideal destination for car clubs, aviation groups and other interested parties to learn about Australia’s aviation history.

There is a large range of aviation models and other aviation-related treasures for sale at the shop. The museum is run entirely by volunteers. So, if you think you could contribute as a volunteer get in touch. Visit: qldair.museum.

ENVIRONMENT

Have you seen Ochna amongst the springtime flowers?

Spring is a great time to keep an eye out for weedy plants like Ochna serrulata amongst the flowers.

While there are many beautiful yellow flowers around that are good for your garden, this one can be a destructive garden escapee. It was originally sold and planted as a garden ornamental in Australia but escaped cultivation and now threatens our wild places. It is spread by birds and can grow well in the shady understorey of forests, competing with endemic wild plants for sunlight and nutrients.

Ochna has a few telltale traits. After flowering yellow, the sepals – the outer parts of the bud –turn bright red and the seeds turn from green to black as they mature. Its strong tap root makes it difficult to pull out of the ground, but it can be cut at the base. From there, either dig out the tap root or an approved herbicide can be carefully applied to the stump, ideally within 10sec of cutting.

Your local native plant nurseries have a great selection of endemic yellow flowering plants to replace the Ochna in your garden. For more information visit: t.ly/2gyI4.

Seed Libraries

Take advantage of the Noosa and Sunshine Coast council’s Seed Libraries at each of their library branches. Seed Libraries are free and open to anyone with a library membership.

A seed library allows you to borrow up to four seed packets a month to grow at home and return some seeds once the plant has matured. When donating seeds back to the libraries, include as much detail about your seeds as possible including common name, variety, date collected, and conditions needed for growth to help the next grower. Seeds for herbs, vegetables and flowers are included.

Seed libraries across both council areas are collaborative efforts with community gardens and organisations such as Permaculture Noosa. Sunshine Coast Libraries seed boxes were crafted by the Blackall Range Woodies. Noosa Libraries seed packets were designed by local artists with the help of the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. Visit: libraries.noosa.qld.gov.au.

Reuse and repurpose to win

Local not-for-profit organisation Reviva has launched its annual Reviva Reuse Competition, giving locals a chance to showcase their creative reuse and upcycling projects for a chance to win cash prizes.

Ochna serrulata (Credit Biosecurity Qld)

Reviva Noosa Manager Mitch McIntrye says, “This competition is the highlight of our year because it showcases the incredible ideas and talents in our community. We often have customers chat with us about their upcycling projects, all eager to enter and win the competition.”

Now in its 5th year the Reviva Reuse Competition has become a much-loved event. Past entries have featured everything from repurposed clothing transformed into bedspreads to intricate mosaic art made from broken tiles, and even entire kitchens crafted from upcycled materials.

“This year, we’re offering a national prize of a

$300 Visa gift card, along with a local prize of a $200 Visa gift card,” said Mitch.

“Every Reviva site across Australia is cheering for their local entrants, but we’re confident that the top prize will go to someone from our area – the talent and ideas here are unmatched.”

The Reviva team at Noosa is ready to support locals with inspiration and assistance in entering the competition.

“Upcycling helps reduce waste and the demand for new raw materials, making it a simple yet effective way to care for our planet,” Mitch explains. “It’s about taking old, discarded items and transforming them into something useful. Our community never ceases to amaze us with what they can create.”

With the cost of living on the rise, upcycling and reuse have become even more important.

The competition runs until the end of National Recycling Week closing on 15 November. Entry is open to all members of the community. To enter, visit: resourcerecovery.org.au/competition.

100 years of compulsory voting

As we prepare to vote at the Qld Election on 26 October, we will be part of a 100yo history of compulsory voting in Australia.

Compulsory voting was introduced for federal elections in Australia in 1924 following amendments to the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 but did not apply to Indigenous Australians until 1984. Today, Australia is one of just over 20 countries to have compulsory voting.

Advocacy for compulsory voting had been underway since the last decades of the 19th century. Qld introduced it for its state elections in 1915 but excluded Indigenous Australians. Victoria followed in 1926, New South Wales and Tasmania in 1928, Western Australia in 1936

Australia in 1942. Fifty years ago in 1974, the compulsory voting age was lowered nationally to 18yo.

With all this history, Australia has one of the highest electoral turnout rates in the world. According to a 1997 paper by Malcolm Mackerras and Ian McAllister, polls taken over the years in Australia have consistently shown community support for compulsory voting at around 6070%. In 2005, polls undertaken by Roy Morgan Research and Ipsos-Mackay found support at 71 and 74% respectively.
