The Eumundi and District Historical Association and its volunteers have once again outdone themselves bringing some festive joy to Eumundi.

Uniting families and the local community for an afternoon and evening of Christmas festivities, thousands of people enjoyed the Christmas Extravaganza with food stalls, raffles, free rides, Christmas shopping and entertainment for all ages.

The crowd was entertained with performances from the Noosa District Concert Band, Eumundi State School Band, Eumundi State School Choir, Soul in Motion, Rebecca Bennett Hincksman, Good Shepherd Lutheran College Orchestra, Eumundi Callisthenics, The Kitty Kats, Coast Academy of Dramatic and Musical Arts, Grace Burroughs, Fit Barre, The Santa Show and The Sundowners.

Christmas at Eumundi Markets The Eumundi Twilight Markets are on 8 December and the Eumundi Foodie Night Markets on 22 December. Santa will visit both nights and on 23 December. There is a Christmas card workshop on 9 December, a lamp shade workshop on 13 December and a lantern workshop on 22 December. Peregian Beach Carols 2023 marks the 59th year of Peregian Beach Carols, making it the longest running carols on the Sunshine Coast. This year’s carols will take place from 3-8pm on 20 December at Peregian Park opposite the shops. Santa will make a special sky-diving appearance on the beach around 6pm, weather permitting. Enjoy artisan and food stalls, music from local bands, face painting and more. Noosa Carols on the River The Churches of Noosa have combined to present Noosa Carols on the River on 17 December from 7-9pm at the River Stage in Lions Park. While the music kicks off at 7pm bring a picnic and set up beforehand. There will be food trucks and spectacular fireworks to finish off the night. This is a free event. Hoofbeats Sanctuary Art Prize Entries are open for the 2024 Seeing the Soul Hoofbeats Sanctuary Art Prize and Exhibition.

CEO Barb Blashki invites entrants to submit works that depict Seeing the Soul: The humananimal connection. She welcomes “Works in any medium that show the connection between people and animals at liberty, without restraints of any kind”.

Prizes range from $500 to $2,500 with a new under-18yo emerging artist prize of $500. Entries can be submitted online at: seeingthesoul.org.au by 8 March 2024 and will be exhibited at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre from 12 April to 12 May. Located in Doonan, Hoofbeats Sanctuary is a grassroots mental health charity that supports women and girls impacted by trauma.

Pomona Railway Station Gallery It’s a family affair at the latest exhibition at Pomona Railway Station Gallery. Anton Koch, his partner Kara, her sister Nikki and mother Rain Dunnage showcase their talents in Journey of Four running until 28 December. The result is an eclectic exhibition of artworks including lighting, sculptural timber, thrown clay, acrylic and watercolour paintings as well as ink and charcoal drawings. Art on Yabba Art on Yabba fine art gallery at Imbil has an exhibition of small works throughout December.

This comprises paintings, ceramics, prints and collages and offers an easy Christmas shopping experience. The small works are by 15 artists from the Gympie region.

40 Under 40 exhibition The 40 Under 40 exhibition and art prize is a group exhibition to be held at Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre from 12 January to 25 February.

The exhibition will showcase a diverse range of young and emerging artists aged 18-40 from the Noosa, Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions.

Founded by Amanda Bennetts the project aims to build a community of young artists who previously felt they didn't fit into the current art scene and to give them an opportunity to connect with like-minded artists. Artists thrive thanks to RADF support Thank you Cooroy RSL Community groups gathered recently at Cooroy RSL for the second round of its community giving program. There was a record amount of community donations this year supporting around 40 local organisations with more than $100,000.

Four local creative industries projects received more than $28,000 in the latest round of Regional Arts Development Fund (RADF) grants.

These include a Cooroy Future Group project to hold the 40 Under 40 exhibition and art prize at the Cooroy Butter Factory Arts Centre. This exhibition showcases a range of artists aged 1840 from the Noosa, Sunshine Coast and Gympie regions.

Another recipient is local band Ampersand with a grant enabling them to record, market and release multiple singles, film a music video and host a free launch event for their debut EP in early 2024.

Ampersand manager and keyboard player Jarrod Tutbury praised the RADF funding: “As an independent young musician and manager this grant makes all the difference to my own and Ampersand's career plans. We are self-funded and could not possibly hope to front the kind of funds required for a project of this magnitude and quality.”

The long-established RADF grants have supported a vast number of professionals, creatives and organisations to develop and present work and engage with audiences.

Other recipients include local artist Lucy Laino and The Shelter SC Pty Ltd organisation which will use the funds to present a month-long development project culminating in an art exhibition combining music and immersive art installations.

Living with wild horses in Eumundi Growing up with horses gave Eumundi’s Lynn Scott an appreciation of horse life way before dressage, pony clubs and events were common.

Lynn rode freely through the Blue Mountains but then years without a horse left an emptiness, until now.

Let’s Dance One of Eumundi Voice’s writers, Rhonda Piggott is now a published author with the recent launch in Canberra by Senator the Hon. Penny Wong, Minister for Foreign Affairs, of Let’s Dance: A History of LGBTIQ staff in the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT).

The history covers the period 1950-2020 and the title Let’s Dance is taken from the view that “tolerance is being invited to the party, inclusion is being asked to dance”. Rhonda wrote Let’s Dance to put on record what went before so we can have a better grasp on what might come in the future.

Katie Rose Cottage Hospice AGM Claire Middleton was recently appointed chair of Katie Rose Hospice following the retirement of inaugural chair Carol Raye in December 2022.

Les Godwin temporarily filled the position until a permanent replacement was recruited.

Claire has made a life-long commitment to palliative and hospice care. There were eating disorders in her family some years ago and at that time adequate support could not be found.

As a result Claire took it upon herself to establish the Butterfly Foundation dedicated to providing the very best care and support for those affected by eating disorders.

Walk without worrying The replacement of at least one section of the old, uneven footpath in Memorial Dr out the front of the Eumundi Museum – which made walking while looking at the pavement a necessity – is complete. It looks great with sections in brick to add some eye-appeal as well as a wonderfully even surface. For that section we can now walk without worrying about twisting an ankle.

SunnyKids XMAS appeal

SunnyKids and The Ginger Factory have come together to support Sunshine Coast families with Sunny XMAS for Kids at The Ginger Factory.

As the drop-off point for the Sunny XMAS for Kids Appeal, until 18 December visitors to The Ginger Factory can leave a gift at the base of a huge Christmas tree installed in the piazza.

Last year the appeal enabled Sunny Kids to bring magic and joy to the lives of more than 350 children with over 1,300 gifts donated to vulnerable families in time for Christmas. It aims to help 150 vulnerable families over the next 12 months and ensure every child has a present under the tree and food on the table on Christmas morning.

The least affordable suburb in regional Qld is Eumundi where a median rental of $1,050 week costs 58% of the average regional Qld rental household income.

Nearby areas Wurtulla beach, Coolum beach, Tewantin, Cooroy and Noosa Heads have all been classified as severely unaffordable compared to moderately unaffordable or acceptable in 2020.

The Kin Kin Hotel – formerly known as the Country Life Hotel – opened its doors on 29 November for the first time in nearly two years following renovations to restore it to its “former glory”.

For local residents the closure has seemed like an eternity with the length of the renovation time a major source of frustration. The opening of the front 'Drinker's Bar' will be followed in coming months with a family-friendly beer garden and a fine dining Chophouse restaurant focusing on no-waste, whole-animal butchery.

1915 and its 108th birthday passed unnoticed just a few weeks ago. The best-known report of its opening was penned by the Kin Kin correspondent to the Gympie Times & Mary Valley Mining Gazette. The writer described it as "an event in the progress and development of the district, as it has been recognised for some time that such an institution is a necessity here”.

Word has it that the Kin Kin Hotel kept its name until the early 1970s when a new owner decided he didn't like it. He was chatting with some locals at the bar and glanced down at a packet of cigarettes – Country Life – which was a popular brand at the time. He liked the name and switched the building's name plates. It remained The Country Life Hotel until the new owners took over in 2021 and opted to switch the name back to the original.

Current opening hours are 12-8pm Wednesday and Thursday, 11am-9pm Friday and Saturday and 11am-5pm Sunday with drinks and a bar snacks menu. It will be closed from 4pm Christmas Eve and re-open at 12pm on 28 December. Visit: kinkinhotel.com or follow them on FB and Insta.

HISTORY The first cricket club in Eumundi Long before the Cricket World Cup cricket was conceived the small township of Eumundi formed its first cricket club in October 1903 and hosted a fundraising dance at the school.

The following week the Eumundi cricket team

While the location of the first oval is unknown the pitch obviously favoured the fielding team.

Traveston batted first and were all out for 34 with the Eumundi captain Fred Hull bowling 4 for 15!

Eumundi then scored a total of 45 with Edgar Jefferies – who had just bought the Eumundi Hotel – the only batter to reach double figures with a top score of 13.

Traveston scored 38 in their second innings with Hull bowling 6 for 16 but Eumundi only managed 20 in their second innings and with five ducks, Traveston won by 7 runs. The following week Eumundi travelled to Kenilworth and got thumped, losing by an innings and 94 runs.

Shortly afterwards the Moreton Cricket Association was established with five teams – Nambour, the Waratahs (also from Nambour), Woombye, Landsborough and EumundiKenilworth who joined together as one club. The new local newspaper The Chronicle also created a team and joined the association. Low scores were the norm and forfeitures were common as trying to get a whole team to a neighbouring town by horse and train was certainly not easy.

This is my last report for the year as Eumundi Police head into the very busy Christmas period.

At the time of writing Eumundi Police have already attended 93 requests for assistance or emergencies in November with December usually busier.

Unfortunately we have attended two fatal traffic accidents at Eumundi-Kenilworth Rd, Belli Park and Skyring Creek Rd, Ridgewood. On a single day of light rain in November Eumundi Police attended another four traffic crashes which were all roll-overs including a cement mixer which motorists narrowly avoided as it slid on its side on a major road. Please slow down and take extra precautions in the wet.

Eumundi Police were part of a Rotary initiative relating to domestic violence awareness. Thank you to Rotary Eumundi, Cooroy and Noosa for identifying a need for increased community awareness. Blair and Warwick from Eumundi

Police participated in a vehicle convoy but unfortunately our DMAX was not as good as some of the classic-look vehicles.

In November we were called to 15 domestic violence incidents and objected to bail for one offender from Doonan who will be held in custody until mid-January due to threats to safety of his former partner.

Two people were arrested for drug possession, two for drug driving and one for drink driving when a 42yo offender from Ninderry refused to provide a breath sample while driving intoxicated.

Our Highway Patrol units have been patrolling high risk areas and issued 50 tickets so far in November for speeding, drive without due care and attention, using a mobile phone while driving and hoon-related offences. Eumundi Police have performed more than 200 breath tests so far with only one drink driving offence, which is a credit to the community. Unfortunately drug drivers are still being caught every month.

Sunday walks Thirty-six intrepid walkers braved the easy-grade stroll from Brooloo to Imbil on 26 November for a social gathering, a bit of ‘get fit’ focus and to raise funds for Eumundi State School's P&C to boost support for students' individual mental health needs.

“It’s more fun to walk with a group at a leisurely pace so you can chat and enjoy the scenery, knowing the well-deserved reward at the end is lunch at Wild Vine café in Imbil,” said walk organiser Rotarian Greg Molyneux. Prizes for best hats were won by Pippa in the junior category and Mick Barton in the adult category.

The raffle hamper was won by Barbara Morris.

Eumundi Museum Eumundi Rotary Club members visited the Eumundi Museum at 73 Memorial Dr recently and met with Director Joe Hextall to find out more about the town’s history.

There are major expansion plans for the rear of the museum which will provide more display space and interactive screens as well as a project for repair work on the street frontage.

Roasted Christmas cauliflower This recipe is a winner for Christmas and perfect as a side dish. It is plant-based and gluten-free.

Ingredients  1 cauliflower (whole)

 2 tbsp tahini

 4 tsp Dijon mustard  Cranberries  2 tsp of maple syrup  Almond flakes  1/2 lemon or lime (juice) Method Boil a pan of water, pop the whole cauliflower in for 5 minutes, then drain.

Lightly rub extra virgin olive oil over the cauliflower, season with salt and pepper and place in the oven to roast for approximately 35 mins (200 degrees).

Mix the tahini, mustard, maple syrup and lemon juice and add warm water to thin.

Once the cauliflower has browned remove it from oven and dress it with the tahini-based sauce. Sprinkle with cranberries, flaked almonds and some finely chopped green cauliflower leaves. Heidi Jenkins

Flying-foxes keep our native forests healthy. Some trees, like Australian eucalypts, only flower at night and depend on flying-foxes for survival to pollinate their flowers and spread their seeds. 'Say No' to domestic violence On 24 November members of the Rotary Club of Eumundi in support of Rotarians for Mental Health (R4MH) wore their 'Say No' purple t-shirts and cheered on Noosa Beach Classic Car Club members at their Classic Cars Convoy along Memorial Dr as part of a national awarenessraising project by Rotary.

The ‘Say No to Domestic and Family Violence’ convoy visited Noosa, Tewantin, Cooroy and Eumundi with 'Say No' banners waving. The JourneyMen handed out flyers in town. A special thank you to our local police contingent who led the convoy with lights flashing. More than 50% of police work is attending domestic violence cases.

Zonta says 'No'!

Zonta’s walk against domestic violence along Gympie Tce on 27 November drew a crowd of all ages with the message say 'No' to domestic violence. One in six women have experienced physical or sexual abuse by a current or former partner, while for men it is one in 16. Domestic violence is the leading cause of homelessness for women.

Ampersand to release debut single Sunshine Coast band Ampersand will debut its first single Originality on online platforms from 25 January 2024. The release follows two years of non-stop success for the independent nufunk/soul/retro pop fusion band which recently performed at the Caloundra Music Festival.

A free launch event hosted by Solbar and featuring singer Harriet Wensley will welcome Originality into the world on 28 January.

Ampersand is an entertaining, energetic and evolving group featuring two spectacular lead vocalists backed by a tight, innovative trio of keys, bass and drums. The band members have varied skill sets, an unshakeable support of each other, and can effortlessly improvise and converse musically while creating their own unique sound.

Off the back of performances at Noosa Alive! and a continuing residency at Noosa Social, Ampersand recorded Originality in response to public demand from a supportive community.

Confident, outspoken and unapologetically direct Originality is an ode to originality and inspired by experiences with copycat musicians.

It calls-out those who can’t seem to find selfmotivation and inspiration within themselves

without resorting to imitating the music of others.

Co-written and arranged by the whole Ampersand team, Originality features vocals, lyrics and melody by Katie Brown and Isi Semmler, keyboards and chords by Jarrod Tutbury, bass by Jed Green, drums and percussion by Orlando Hamilton-Craig and guitar by featured guest artist Doc Hamilton. It was recorded, engineered and produced by Scott Mathison and Justin Tresidder at Yama Nui Studios and mastered by Paul Blakey.

Dr Lisa Murray will lead the study into the evolution of cemeteries and stonemasons who crafted history. Her research aims to build and strengthen the knowledge of Sunshine Coast heritage and may also provide avenues for possible heritage trails and resources.

“There are 19 cemeteries on the Sunshine Coast, 15 of these and five burial sites are heritage listed and great sources of heritage information.

The shape, style and material of a headstone are pointers to the period in which stones were manufactured,” said Dr Murray.

Beyond the grave Monumental masons toiled in the quietest and most solemn of locations – cemeteries – where they decorated and embellished final resting places. They were among the most skilled artists of their day however could not have been any further from the spotlight, surrounded by the dead.

Masters of an ageless stone craft they even signed their work like an artist, partly out of pride and partly self-promotion. It was a fascinating form that once flourished across our region but there are many gaps in the history and stories to be uncovered.

The stonemasons and our cemeteries will be the focus of a fact-finding mission as part of the

Twice a week ultimate frisbee games were held at the showgrounds with up to 26 sporting hacks flinging discs in a display of mad frisbee skills, seamless teamwork and good spirited sportsmanship. Fees from the games and weekly raffles were donated to the cause.

MOVEMBER

Movember – a hairy month for Eumundi!

Partners, friends and families throughout Eumundi and the hinterland breathed a sigh of relief as November drew to a close signalling the end of hirsute pursuits from the Eumundi Movember Mo-tribe and their collective facial hair.

Since 2016 this rag-tag group of misfits has raised tens of thousands of dollars for Movember with funds raised going towards tackling men’s mental health and reducing the rates of suicide, prostate and testicular cancer. This year a full month of activities encouraged everyone to begin conversations and challenged men to reach out and seek support.

More than 100 locals attended the launch party on 5 November at The Imperial Hotel Eumundi with local ambassador and chef Matt Golinski enthralling the crowd with his story of hope and recovery. Raffles were held, Movember t-shirts sold and a donated karma keg was drained – all adding to the coffers.

On 12 November a moustached tribe of 25 scared the Noosa set with a ‘hairy hike’ through Noosa National Park and on to Sunshine Beach followed by a rinse in the sea and refreshments at the surf club. The walk complemented the weekly Monday morning walks which saw a crew gather at local cafés before touring the town's hills.

On 19 November the Eumundi Mo-Tribe descended on the showgrounds for a drivein movie screening of The Castle. Serenity and laughter filled the grounds as the crowd recited the much-loved Aussie classics – “Tell him he’s dreaming” and “Straight to the pool room!”.

Around $1,000 was raised and the incredibly generous Eumundi Showgrounds Association donated $2,000.

The month of events concluded with a car rally where 17 families drove on a quest answering quiz questions and challenging themselves across the hinterland. Destinations included the Kin Kin Hotel and Dingo Creek winery, traversing winding dirt roads before ending the day with refreshments at Cooran Brewery.

With Movember over for 2023, a big thank you to everyone involved and a reminder to keep the conversations going and look after each other.

Now to the removal of dodgy moustaches!
