Editor's Letter

Music is a universal language that many people utilize to express their emotions. The beauty of music is truly one of a kind. Music is such a versatile concept - there are sad songs, love songs, you name it. Personally, I usually listen to many types. All the people that have come and gone throughout my life, have each engraved a different memory. When I listen to certain songs I am able to relive those memories, some good and some not so. The nostalgia rushing in as a song from 2018 starts playing on the radio, or the heartbreak played on repeat when my ears catch a glimpse of that song we used to sing together, are universal experiences. We all relate to some kind of music to some extent. Our memories are intertwined with these lyrics and melodies, so that music too becomes part of our core memories.

Music is an identity, and sometimes it can define people’s personalities, or even bring people together. It is not only a form of identity for people, but also a form of identity for places. Different countries have distinct types of traditional music that encapsulate their culture. For example, Javanese music often uses gamelan, and it is easily distinguishable from the music of other countries.

In this issue, we will discuss all about music. Maybe you’ll find it quite interesting how music has altered throughout different eras, or perhaps you’ll take an interest in reading about traditional music in our country. Or reading the stories of some worldwide music legends with local connections. But all in all, I do believe this issue will surely be an interesting one to wrap up the year. Happy holidays to you all!

On October 28, Sumpah Pemuda was held at school. Students played fun games and had a wonderful time. We first started the day with a Mindfulness session with Grade 9 in the gym. After that, we had an excellent flagraising ceremony and a speech from our wonderful National Curruculum head, Mr Stanis. After lunch, everyonegatheredinthegymagainandreadtheSumpah Pemuda pledge. The students viewed a video of the history of Sumpah Pemuda and why it is important. Once the video ended, each class from Grades 7-12 had a performancerelatedtoSumpahPemuda.

Born in Newark, New Jersey, her love for music developed when she was a part of the Baptist Gospel Church. She came to Europe in June 1962 and was supposed to be in Italy for four weeks, then two weeks in London, and go back to America. Fortunately, plans changed and instead of six weeks, it became fourteen months. Everyone went back home, but Madeline stayed on and now has been living in Europe for 60 years. With her place in music, this is why we did an exclusive interview with the one and only Madeline Bell, and have her as our main feature in this issue. The swinging sixties was a big era in the music industry, especially in London. Madeline started off doing backing vocal sessions for renowned artist, Dusty Springfield, one of the biggest stars in the UK at the time. She quickly escalated and started doing backing vocals for everyone you could imagine, like for members of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. It was in 1969 when she was asked to join the band, Blue Mink, to be their vocalist. Eventually an up and coming songwriter, Roger Cook, had written a song and had Madeline record it, and it became their hit, Melting Pot. She worked and sang with a lot of artists like Joe Cocker, Ray Charles, Rosetta Hightower, Sunny Leslie, Freddie Mercury from Queen, Stevie Wonder, John Lennon, Jimmy Hendrix and Elton John. She knows Elton as Reggie (just Reggie). The connections she made have been eternal that even until now, they all remain very good friends. She’s known Reggie from back before his fame.

eunoia-10

She expresses how upsetting and disappointingly common it was for musicians and backup singers to not get the credit that they deserve on tracks. That’s why when asking for some advice she would give for artists starting out, it is to always read the fine print thoroughly and get a lawyer to make sure you don’t get ripped off.

She shared a flat with Jimmy Hendrix (who can say that?) and until now, is still really close friends with his girlfriend at the time, Kathy - whom she refers to as 'his real, original girlfriend'. In 1988, she got a call from Mike Moran, a pianist and musical director who co-produced Freddie Mercury's Barcelona with Montserrat Caballé, to do some backing vocals. They did a track called 'Golden Boy' from the album, and it went as far as her getting personally invited by Freddie to perform in Barcelona for the launch of the 1992 Olympics. He had always been a fan of Madeline.

If I were to write all the stories she had to tell, this would be a never-ending article. This woman is so incredible in everything she's achieved and experienced, involved in so much of the music scene and seems to be connected to almost every big major artist. Who else is better to have featured in this issue other than the woman who exceptionally peaked in the most influential era of music? Ladies and gentlemen, the icon herself, the big nameMadeline Bell.

Watching her perform is always so lively and a star quality radiates off her. I'm honored to have her as my godmother.

Our beloved country Indonesia, led the 7th G20 meeting in Nusa Dua, Bali on 15-16 November 2022. Indonesia's presidency began on 1 December 2021, leading up to the summit in the fourth quarter of 2022. This year’s theme was‘RecoverTogether,RecoverStronger’.

First, let us see the background of how Indonesia became the head of the G20 in 2022. Supposedly, Indonesia was to host the G20 in 2023, but because Indonesia will also hold the Chairmanship of ASEAN in 2023, India (who was slated to hold the summit in 2022) agreed to exchange the presidency timings with Indonesia. So Indonesia would hold the presidency in 2022, whileIndiawilltakechargein2023.

What are the preparations Indonesia did for the G20 meeting? Indonesia used up around Rp 674 billion (~USD 45 million) for the G20 events. There weresafetyprecautionsputinplace,suchasdeployingaround10,000police officers and 18,000 soldiers, including 6,000 soldiers from the Kodam 1X/Udayana headquartered in Bali. Moreover, the airport became very restricted before, during, and after the summit, with limited operating hours. Some flights were redirected to nearby airports in Surabaya, Lombok, andMakassar.

The meeting was held in The Apurva Kempinski Hotel of Nusa Dua, in the Bandung Regency. Other venues that handled some of the G20 summit were the Bali International Convention Center for the media center, Sofitel Bali Nusa Dua Beach Resort for the Spouse Programme, Ngurah Rai Grand Forest Park for a mangrove planting session, and the Garuda Wisnu Kencana CulturalParkforthegaladinneraswellasthetraditionalperformances.

During this year, November saw a total lunar eclipse! During a lunar eclipse, the Moon, Sun, and Earth stand in a line with the Earth in the middle, causing our planet’s shadow to be cast onto the Moon. This gives the full Moonareddish, copperyhue, aswellasthenickname“BloodMoon.

For decades, the traditional Almanac has referenced the monthly full Moons with names tied to early Native American, Colonial American, and European folklore. Traditionally, each full Moon name was applied to the entire lunar month in which it occurred and through all of the Moon’s phases - not just for the full Moon. This latest one is called the Beaver Moon because it is the time of year when beavers begin to take shelter in their lodges, having collected sufficient stores of food for the long winter ahead. During the time of the fur trade in North America, it was also the season to trap beavers for theirthick,winter-readypelts.

November’s Moon names highlight the actions of animals preparing for winter and the onset of the colder days ahead. Digging (or Scratching) Moon, a Native American Tlingit name, evokes the image of animals foraging for fallen nuts and shoots of green foliage, and of bears digging their winter dens. The Dakota and Lakota term Deer Rutting Moon refers to the time when deer are seeking out mates, and the Algonquin Whitefish Moon describesthespawningtimeforthisfish.

Indonesian Traditional Music

Indonesia (or Nusantara) is a multicultural sanctuary with 38 provinces and 1,340 tribes. Each tribe has their own unique culture that distinguishes them from each other. A form of culture commonly shared among different tribes is their traditional music. Javanese music, Balinese music, and so many more, are all rich with culture and identity. Traditional music connects people with the roots of Indonesia. It is often used in traditional ceremonies, dances, as a form of communication, and entertainment. Among all the kinds of traditional music Indonesia has to offer, we will discuss here 3 differenttypesfromvariedpartsofNusantara.

1.Gambangkromong

Gambang kromong is a traditional orchestra originating from Betawi, that started becoming popular in the 1930s amongst Chinese Peranakan people. It was first known simply as "Gambang", but at the beginning of the 20th century its name was changed to "Gambang Kromong" as a result of adding the Kromong instrument. It is usually played by around 8-25 people who took on the roles of playing Gambang, Kromong, Teh-hian, Kong-a-hian, Sukong,Gong,Kecrek, flute, anddrums.

2.GongLuang

Gong Luang is a relatively old form of gamelan, with a repertoire of pieces that still exist. It is intended for the Balinese funeral ritual ceremony "Ngaben", and takes approximately 20 people to play. Some of these repertoires are devoted to the procession of the cremation ceremony, such as the procedure of bathing the corpse, wrapping, and reaching the farewell. It also functions as music to other performing arts such as mask dances. In the last two decades, it has begun to experience a shift. The usage of it has beenmainlyfortheNgabenceremony, andlessforperformingarts.

3.Keroncong

Keroncong is a form of traditional music from Jakarta, which originated from music brought by Portuguese traders and sailors when they arrived in Nusantara in the 1500s. Keroncong music developed from this, especially seen in the influence of the ukulele and guitar, which came from a Portuguese musical instrument. Keroncong is characterized by the use of ukulele, guitar, violin, pianoandflute.

Mr. Nicolaas Smit

eunoia-22

This is a story about Dutch-Indonesian music journalist Nicolaas Smit, of how he dabbled into the music industry and built famous connections, all just by starting a school magazine. When he was a student, he established his school magazine, the foundation of how everything started. At the time, he was a big fan of a famous Dutch comedian and artist, Paul Van Vliet, and got the chance to interview him. They both hit it off and till this day, they remain good friends. Throughout Smit’s career, Van Vliet has been there guiding him, taking him to events and introducing him to other renowned people in the industry.

Back then, there were only two channels on Dutch television and one of the programmes playing was the ‘Showbiz Quiz’. Many artists were invited on the show and as he was always invited for press conferences, Smit gained easy access to big names. One thing led to another, and he even met Prince Claus and Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands, and she knew about him by name. At some point, Smit also did some stage management for Van Vliet, who became his mentor and taught him everything he’d need to know about the industry.

He started venturing out by organizing events and parties and at one event, he met a pianist, Dolf De Vries, who became an instant friend. Through De Vries, he was introduced to famous Indonesian bassist, Frank Noya. This opened doors for him to get acquainted with more major artists such as Sister Sledge, best known for their hit song, “We Are Family”, Randy Crawford, and the Three Degrees.

Amsterdam, 25th May 1994, was when one of the most memorable incidents happened - how he got backstage to the dressing room of none other than The Rolling Stones. He had just got back from a performance he had organized with artist Marjorie Barnes and passed by a theater where the band would be performing that night. He told the security that he was there with the band, and while The Rolling Stones were walking by, he joined them and convinced everyone that he was supposed to be there. He stayed for quite a while conversing with them in their dressing room. Another interesting story was when he had dinner with Paul McCartney and his wife. McCartney had just had a concert and was spotted the morning after in his double decker bus in Groningen, where Smit was from. Smit knocked on the door, introduced himself and charmed his way into having breakfast with them. Easy peasy

In 2007, Smit was approached by Peter Gontha - Indonesian tycoon, former jazz player and the founder of Java Jazz Festival - with an offer to be his right-hand man and went on to discuss opportunities to bring Dutch artists and musicians to perform for the festival and tour around Indonesia (like with Madeline Bell).

Nicolaas Smit’s advice for amateur journalists is to stand out. Don’t ask mediocre, easy-to-get-answers-to questions that have been asked a million times before that the internet can answer. He went on a six-week tour with Dutch artist Mara Sophie for Martha Tilaar and even in that amount of time, she already expressed annoyance to the press because of how boring and uninteresting their questions were all the time. As a journalist, you should dare to make jokes and ask unexpected questions - stand out, make yourself memorable.

An example of this was in Hotel Mulia in February 2003. There were a lot of people there one day and Smit found out that Mariah Carey was the cause of the commotion. He met her walking with four bodyguards, gave her his name card, and with confidence said that he will meet her tomorrow - he didn't have anything planned. So, the next day he called the hotel and Mariah’s manager invited him for the concert and afterwards to her dressing room. He created quite the impression and established a connection with her.

One thing to never do, Smit says, is to lie. Why? Because everyone is connected somehow. Whilst conversing with the Queen, they both talked about their mutual friend Paul Van Vliet and the Queen’s people later contacted him to ask for verification about Smit. So, don’t be cocky but do try to be well-established.

Nicolaas Smit has had quite a life in the music industry. He has taken employment here and there, like managing and organizing, but he has always looked at it as a hobby. How he got most of his connections and interactions with all these people is by having a personality. He’s a social and bold man (also bald), but he puts himself out there and appeals to people.

Having him as my father growing up, I would always be serenaded by all these stories, and was surrounded by music and musicians. Not only is he a spectacular man, but also a great father and I'm very grateful to have him.

Music's Music's Music's language language language

The language we all understand is music. Music is a complex and interesting concept that peaks all of our interests and understandings at the same time. “Music is the universal language of mankind” was said by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, which has been proven true with evidence.

Music, according to Google, is defined as “a combination of vocal or instrumental sounds (sometimes both) that produce harmony, beauty, and the expression of emotion through form.” According to this definition, music is viewed as something beautiful that we all enjoy and love with every emotion: sadness, anger, joy, peace, and most commonly, satisfaction

Music is a way we express ourselves, with or without words. The melody can speak for itself. The type of music we listen to greatly affects our mood For instance, when we want to feel optimistic, we tend to listen to upbeat and cheerful songs with fast tempos. We feel happy due to the release of chemicals from the brain, such as serotonin and dopamine, which causes us to feel elated. When we want to relax and meditate, we turn to soothing and calm songs with few to no heavy beats It’s not fun to relax while listening to heavy metal music, is it?

Another interesting fact about music is that we can predict a person’s personality According to psychologist Adrian North, people tend to be more secretive about their favourite music because it often relates to their personality. For example, if your preferred genre is pop music, you are more likely to be extroverted and truthful Your self-esteem is often high, but you might be less creative and prone to worry than others who prefer other genres. The good news is that you are determined and honest as well.

Music's Music's Music's language language language

In addition, music is also able to determine the condition of a person. According to theverge.com, a person with depression would most likely listen to downbeat, melancholic songs rather than upbeat songs The depressed participants told the researchers that listening to depressing songs is a way to cope with their depression. Researchers gave the same participants various clips of happy and sad instrumental music and asked them to describe how the tracks made them feel Like before, the depressed participants preferred the sad music, but they also stated that the depressing music made them feel better. “They were feeling better after listening to this sad music than they were before,” observed co-author Jonathan Rottenberg, “it seemed to have relaxing and calming effects on the depressed participants.”

Whether or not music is a complex subject, as of today it remains as one of the most popular forms of entertainments across the world and continues to thrive in the hearts of everyone.

Is Music good?

It provides a total brain workout. Research has shown that listening to music can reduce anxiety, blood pressure, and pain, as well as improve sleep quality, mood, mental alertness and memory Studies have shown that music produces several positive effects on a human's body and brain Music activates both the left and right brains at the same time, and the activation of both hemispheres can maximise learning and improve memory

Music can also impact our mood for the long term, increasing depression or anxiety. Certain songs, lyrics, and genres of music are more likely to intensify depression or anxiety, sometimes as much or even more than outside stressors and environmental factors.

Music is one of the universal ways for us humans to both communicate and express our feelings and thoughts. It is present and evident in the everyday lives of people of all ages and cultures around the world Listening, playing, singing, creating, and composing music, individually and as in groups, are common activities for most of the world’s population. It represents an enjoyable activity, but music’s influence goes way beyond just amusement

Let’s start with the fact that music not only allows the expression of our inner states and feelings, but also can bring about many positive effects in those who engage in them These positive effects include:

Research has also shown that blood flows move more easily when we listen to music It can reduce our heart rate, lower blood pressure, decrease stress hormones level (Cortisol) and increase serotonin and endorphin levels in our blood. Music boosts our brain’s production of the hormone called dopamine. This increased production of dopamine helps to relieve our feelings of anxiety and even depression. This is due to music being directly processed in the amygdala, which is the part of the brain that is involved in our moods and emotions. Music can relieve our stress by triggering the biochemical stress reducers that are present in our brains. This relieves symptoms of depression, much like how exercise also does so

Surprisingly, music can also stimulate our memories. Despite there being no cure for diseases like Alzheimer’s or dementia, music therapy has been shown to relieve some of its symptoms It can relax an agitated patient, and improve mood and communication with the patient itself.

Furthermore, music can be used to manage our aches and pains, by reducing stress as we mentioned earlier and providing strong competing stimuli to the signal of pain that enters our brains. Music can “meaningfully” reduce the intensity of pain.

And lastly, music will increase your endurance during a workout. If you listen to your favourite workout music, it boosts your workout performance and increases your stamina during a tough exercise session.

Overall, we humans listen to music mostly for the joy it brings from its beats, or the harmonious lyrics, or even the association with our own respective cultures. But we have many other benefits from listening to the vocalisations and sounds of various instruments and beats, even though we might not see or realise them until we self-reflect or examine ourselves
