About the Coach Nick Mackall is in his second season as the Eureka volleyball head coach. He became the 14th head coach in program history on March 6, 2019.

In his first season at the helm, the Red Devils won three of four matches at the Blue Angels Bash in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and picked up SLIAC wins over Blackburn and Principia.

Mackall came to Eureka after spending four seasons at NCAA Division III Adrian College in Adrian, Mich. He was the top assistant coach for three seasons and was promoted to associate head coach in 2018.

EUREKA – For the first time in ages, the Eureka volleyball team is set to host a home match against a St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foe.

On Friday at 6 p.m., the Red Devils (0-2) will welcome Spalding (0-1) for their first home match of the 2021 spring season. It will be their first time hosting a home volleyball match since Oct. 30, 2019 – 471 days.

The maroon and gold squad is coming off a pair of three-set losses on the road against Iowa Wesleyan and Greenville. For those who missed it, EC dropped a 25-13, 25-11, 25-11 sweep at Greenville on Tuesday night. The night wasn’t without good signs, though.

For instance, junior Emma Harris made a rather strong first impression in her collegiate volleyball debut for the Red Devils. A defender for the Eureka women’s soccer team, Harris joined the volleyball team this winter after transferring from MacMurray this past fall.

TEAM COMPARISON

On Tuesday, she delivered a team-high eight kills for the maroon and gold while hitting .138 and contributing eight digs.

Freshman Regan Reed, who posted a teamhigh seven kills in her EC debut over the weekend, added four, along with a teamhigh 10 digs.

Corinne DeBoard and Katelin Peters each had three kills, while Faith Catour distributed 18 assists. DeBoard and Megan Masching both had seven digs, and libero Jordyn Fox notched four digs, as well as two aces for the second straight match.

Through two matches, Fox ranks third in the SLIAC with 5.67 digs per set, fifth in total digs (34) and fifth in aces in per set (.67). DeBoard is fifth in digs per set with 4.83. The Red Devils rank second in digs per set with 21.83 and fourth in total digs with 131.

Spalding is coming off a 3-1 loss to Greenville last Friday. The Golden Eagles took the first set of the match, 25-23, but the Panthers responded by holding them to 16 points or fewer in each of the next three sets to notch the win.

The Golden Eagles were voted to finish fourth in the league by SLIAC coaches in the preseason poll. They featured two players on the SLIAC Watch List. Senior right side and middle hitter Cassie Jones was second in the conference hitting percentage (.288) and was second on the team in kills (241) in 2019.

Junior setter Mya Summers ranked second in the league in assists per set (7.85) and had the second-most assists in the league overall with 824. She distributed 29 assists against Greenville, while 6-foot-1 freshman Maggie Purichia racked up a match-high 14 kills.

Eureka has taken three of the last five meetings with the Golden Eagles, but Spalding swept the Red Devils twice last season, the last of which was a 25-17, 25-19, 25-14 victory in St. Louis on Oct. 13, 2019.
