About the Coach Jaylynn Stewart is in her first season as the EC women’s basketball head coach. She is the 13th head coach in program history.

The accomplished former Red Devil returned to EC after spending five prolific seasons as a Division III women’s basketball assistant coach at La Roche University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she helped the Red Hawks capture four regular-season conference titles and clinch three NCAA Tournament bids.

Stewart is a former two-year letterwinner who made 45 appearances and led the Red Devils to back-to-back SLIAC Tournaments.

EUREKA – After opening St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season with a pair of confident wins, the Eureka women’s basketball team is looking to stretch its win streak to three on Tuesday. The Red Devils are taking on Spalding on Tuesday inside Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena and Convocation Center at 5:30 p.m. in a rescheduled SLIAC contest.

Last week, the Red Devils (3-2, 2-0 SLIAC) opened the conference season by nearly blowing Blackburn out of the gym. They would have if it wasn’t for a fourth-quarter surge by the Beavers that made the final score of 81-68 far closer than the majority of the game. On Saturday at Iowa Wesleyan, however, the Red Devils positively pummeled the Tigers for four quarters and notched an emphatic 89-61 win at Ruble Arena.

Alaina Vance was the Red Devils’ leading scorer with a season-high 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the field and 5-of-8 shooting from distance. She also hit both of her free-throw attempts, dished a team-high five assists and had two steals and two rebounds.

Abby Stotler posted 20 points while shooting 8-of-17 and hitting a trio of 3-pointers.

Olivia Falls pulled down a season-high 15 rebounds to go with eight points. Marissa Murphy also added eight points, along with six rebounds and three assists. Fellow guard 1-2, 1-2 SLIAC 3-2, 2-0 SLIAC Whitney Bozarth contributed five points, five Pts/Gm: 66.3 Pts/Gm: 78.4 rebounds and two steals.

TEAM COMPARISON

Through five games, EC is averaging 78.4 points per game on 43.4 percent shooting.

Among SLIAC teams, the Red Devils now only trail Webster in both categories. The team is third in the league in steals with 10.3 per game and fourth in the league in rebounding with 37.7 per game.

The Red Devils feature a balanced rotation, with a variety of players who can step up and produce on both ends of the court, if needed. Stotler and Vance, both transfers from MacMurray, have been the team’s leading scorers, averaging 16.4 and 13 points per game, respectively. Bozarth, a sophomore, also averages double figures with 10.2 points per game, while Murphy and Shakaya Rogers are just below at 9.8 points per game apiece. Post players Falls and Kennedy Jackson are contributing 8.8 and 6 per game, respectively.

Falls leads the team in field goal percentage (53.6) and rebounding (8.4). Stotler and Jackson are gathering 6.6 and 6.0 boards, respectively. Murphy and Bozarth are both averaging over there assists per game and have each swiped over 10 steals with 14 and 11, respectively.

Spalding is 1-2 after losing to Greenville (65-60) and Webster (86-63) and picking up its first win over Blackburn (76-59) over the weekend. The Golden Eagles have averaged 66.3 points per game on 41.5 percent shooting from the field. Natalie Fichter (17), Hunter Wright (13.7) and Hannah Renfro (10) all average double figures, and Wright collects 10 boards per game. Wright dropped 25 and pulled down 12 boards in the win over Blackburn, while Fichter added 17 and Kailey Reed contributed 10.

Last season, Eureka split with Spalding, beating the Golden Eagles 75-74 in dramatic fashion at home and falling 87-53 on the road. The Golden Eagles lead the all-time series against EC 15-8.
