EUREKA – After finding their identity in non-conference play, the Eureka women’s basketball team is prepared to begin St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.

On Wednesday, the Red Devils will host Blackburn in a SLIAC-opening bout inside Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena and Convocation Center at 5:30 p.m.

The team is coming off a revealing home-and-home series against Illinois College that featured two games in three days. At home, the Red Devils displayed the potential of what they’re capable of achieving in a thrilling 83-70 victory. It was Eureka’s first win over Illinois College since Jan. 15, 1998 – and the first win of first-year coach Jaylynn Stewart’s tenure at the helm of the program.

On the road, the team saw where it had room for improvement in a 77-71 loss. After trailing by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter, Eureka rallied to come within four in the final minute, but it couldn’t bridge the gap.

TEAM COMPARISON

Through three games, EC is averaging 74 points per game on 39.4 percent shooting from the field, ranking third in the SLIAC in both categories. The team is third in the league in steals with 10.3 per game and fourth in the league in rebounding with 37.7 per game.

As a team, Eureka has also made progressively fewer turnovers with each game.

The Red Devils have had fairly even scoring, with four players averaging double figures.

Sophomore Abby Stotler leads the way at 14.7 points per game, while juniors Shakaya Rogers and Alaina Vance are averaging 11.7 and 11.3 points per game and sophomore Whitney Bozarth is adding 10 per game. Juniors Olivia Falls and Marissa Murphy are each posting 9.3 points per game and Kennedy Jackson is chipping in 6.7.

Jaylynn Stewart is in her first season as the EC women’s basketball head coach. She is the 13th head coach in program history.

Falls leads the team in field goal percentage (57.9) and rebounding (7.3). Jackson and Stotler are gathering 6.7 and 5.7 boards, respectively. Bozarth has dished a team-high nine assists and Murphy has swiped a team-high nine steals.

The accomplished former Red Devil returned to EC after spending five prolific seasons as a Division III women’s basketball assistant coach at La Roche University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she helped the Red Hawks capture four regular-season conference titles and clinch three NCAA Tournament bids.

Blackburn is 0-1 after opening the season with an 85-78 home loss against Iowa Wesleyan. The Beavers were never far behind, but the Tigers shot 58.8 percent in the fourth quarter to seal the win.

Stewart is a former two-year letterwinner who made 45 appearances and led the Red Devils to back-to-back SLIAC Tournaments.

Eureka holds a 49-14 advantage over Blackburn in the season series and is seeking its 19th straight win over the Beavers.

Mariah Hopson scored a game-high 23 points for the Beavers while shooting 7-of-12 from the field and making 8-of-10 from the stripe. Callista Francis added 12 points and pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds. The team finished with 12 assists, nine steals and 18 turnovers.
