About the Coach Jaylynn Stewart is in her first season as the EC women’s basketball head coach. She is the 13th head coach in program history.

The accomplished former Red Devil returned to EC after spending five prolific seasons as a Division III women’s basketball assistant coach at La Roche University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she helped the Red Hawks capture four regular-season conference titles and clinch three NCAA Tournament bids.

Stewart is a former two-year letterwinner who made 45 appearances and led the Red Devils to back-to-back SLIAC Tournaments.

EUREKA – Wednesday evening will officially be the dawn a new era for Eureka women’s basketball.

At 7 p.m., the Red Devils will host Greenville in a non-conference contest at Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena and Convocation Center, finally kicking off the 2021 spring season. Due to the pandemic, it’s been 361 days since this team was in action, and first-year head coach Jaylynn Stewart has been waiting to make her head coaching debut at her alma mater almost as long.

The former Red Devil star was named the 13th head coach in the program’s history on April 16, 2020. She spent her first few months on the job recruiting and getting to know her new players from afar, and the past few preparing them for the season up close. Now, it’s almost here.

The Red Devils return only three players who played on last year’s squad, but they welcomed a slew of newcomes to give them newfound depth.

TEAM COMPARISON

Olivia Falls is back for her junior season after earning First Team All-SLIAC honors in 201920. The Red Devils’ tenacious leading scorer averaged a double-double of 15.4 points and 10.5 rebounds per game while shooting a league-high 57.2 percent from the field.

She was also a four-time SLIAC Player of the Week.

Sophomore guard Whitney Bozarth posted 10.2 points and two assists per game as a freshman, while junior Marissa Murphy contributed 6.5 points and a team-high 2.7 steals per game off the bench.

Among the Red Devils’ most promising newcomers are MacMurray transfers Abby Stotler (Led MacMurray in scoring and rebounding with 11.6 points and 8.3 rebounds per game last year) and Alaina Vance (10.3 points per game and led the Highlanders with 63 assists and 49 steals), Glen Oaks Community College transfer Shakaya Rogers (11.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last year) and Carl Sandburg transfer Kennedy Jackson (11 points and 5.7 rebounds per game last year and was named the 2020 Arrowhead Conference MVP).

Wednesday’s non-conference showdown between St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rivals is set to be a contrast in styles. The Red Devils haven’t played a real game together yet, but they’re planning to play an up-tempo pace, work to get shots up early and put points on the board in a hurry.

Greenville (1-6), on the other hand, has already played seven non-conference contests and has shown a tendency to favor a slow, deliberate pace that makes for lower-scoring games. The Panthers are averaging 56.7 points per game while shooting 33.6 percent from the floor, 26.1 percent from distance and 75.9 percent from the free-throw line. Sophomore Madelyn Stephen is averaging a team-high 13.1 points per game and is the only Panther averaging double figures. Junior Ashley Anderson is pulling down a team-high 5.7 boards per game.

Eureka has a 35-25 advantage in the all-time series, but Greenville leads 16-13 since EC joined the SLIAC and has won the last five meetings.
