About the Coach Jaylynn Stewart is in her first season as the EC women’s basketball head coach. She is the 13th head coach in program history.

The accomplished former Red Devil returned to EC after spending five prolific seasons as a Division III women’s basketball assistant coach at La Roche University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where she helped the Red Hawks capture four regular-season conference titles and clinch three NCAA Tournament bids.

Stewart is a former two-year letterwinner who made 45 appearances and led the Red Devils to back-to-back SLIAC Tournaments.

EUREKA – After a week off from competition, the Eureka women’s basketball team is ready to get back in action.

The Red Devils will host Illinois College in a non-conference contest at Christine Bonati Bollwinkle Arena and Convocation Center on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m.

The team is coming off a memorable season opener in which the Red Devils fell into a deep hole early, but managed to come back from down 20 points to push Greenville to overtime.

The maroon and gold were only a couple missed opportunities away from pulling off an improbable comeback and knocking off a tough Panthers squad to open the season. The final score was 70-68 (OT).

Shakaya Rogers finished a team-high 15 points in her Red Devils debut. Junior and returning First Team All-SLIAC selection Olivia Falls posted an opening-night double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds. Junior Marissa Murphy posted 13 points off the bench on 5-of-8 shooting.

TEAM COMPARISON

Sophomore guard Whitney Bozarth dished a team-high five assists, while Rogers and junior newcomer Alaina Vance each had three.

The Red Devils made a lot of mistakes on both ends of the court in the first half, but they showed resilience and a capacity to learn on the fly in the second. The team outscored Greenville 24-11 in the fourth quarter while shooting 52.9 percent from the floor.

An area of emphasis going forward will be free-throw shooting. The Red Devils only made 1222 attempts from the line, while the Panthers put away 15-of-20. At 23 turnovers, the team will also be looking to take better care of the ball. However, EC made up for it last week by forcing 27 Greenville turnovers.

Illinois College is 3-2 on the season. The Lady Blues opened the year with a pair of wins over Greenville, winning 73-67 at home and 76-72 at Greenville. They then dropped two in a row to Westminster (85-76, 89-59) before besting Cornell 71-68 on Saturday.

The Lady Blues are averaging 71 points per game on 43 percent shooting from the floor, 24.6 percent from long range and 70.6 percent from the free-throw line.

Junie Zirkelbach is posting a team-high 14.4 points per game on 41.3 percent shooting from the field. She also leads the team in rebounding with 5.6 boards per game.

Lilly Pepper is also above double figures at 11.6 points per game, Pepper dropped a seasonhigh 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting in IC’s win over Cornell on Saturday and is averaging 11.6 points per game.

Krista Bass is averaging 9.2 points per game. and has made a team-high 10 steals. Maya Smith leads the team in assists with 2.8 per game.
