Ivan Veselinov has turned his back on topical matters and politics. His recent experiments go beyond the limits of traditional cartoon art. The series Grotesques proves that the artist is a master of drawing, deformation, and paradox. The prize of Cartoon Section at the UBA (Union of Bulgarian Artists) is an appraisal for his creative quest.

Every year Professor Stoyan Dukov encourages his students from New Bulgarian University to participate in the annual National Cartoon Exhibition. Every year different persons from Prof. Stoyan Dukov's class compete with one another at the exhibition hall - it is vast and hospitable, unlike the narrow garment of the newspapers which shelter 5-6 of the numerous Bulgarian cartoonists. Anna Raycheva, the prize winner of Pro and Anti Weekly, Iva Grueva, Ivaylo Yanev, Iliyana Asparuhova, Milena Ivanova, Ralitsa Encheva, Hristina Valyavicharska, and Julia Ilieva undoubtedly enrich the exhibition through their participation. And yet it is a fact that young Bulgarian cartoonists lack everything that the former "young" Stefan Despodov, Anri Kulev, Fiko Fikov, Jovcho Savov, Nikolay Pekarev, Stoyan Hristov, etc. possessed years ago. In the 1970s and 80s the young Bulgarian artists vigorously rearranged the layers of cartoon art not only in Bulgaria but also in Europe; they promoted a new philosophy and joined the elite of world cartoon art. The young cartoonists nowadays possess good knowledge of graphics and a sense of fun, but they are not really interested in this genre. The link between generations is broken and this is alarming. The reasons are complex and deserve to be the object of a thorough analysis.

THE CRISIS The traditional All Fools' Day Exhibition organized with the cooperation of the political party Bulgarian New Democracy made evident that there was no crisis in the development of Bulgarian cartoon art. The crisis in all other fields is an undeniable fact. The economy has collapsed, business profits are so small and insignificant that Bulgarian women have already started marrying for love. How nice! When we lost our jobs, we regained our freedom which we used to sell very unprofitably. According to the governmental experts, very few Bulgarians will suffer a financial crisis. The others just don't have any finances. In spite of all this talk, the crisis is a fact, and if we must show a way out if it, the answer is one: Sofia Airport. Goodbye!

ÑÂÅÒÈßÒ ÑÈÍÎÄ ÍÀ ÁÚËÃÀÐÑÊÀÒÀ ÊÀÐÈÊÀÒÓÐÀ THE HOLY SYNOD OF BULGARIAN CARTOON ART
THE HOLY SYNOD OF BULGARIAN CARTOON ART Making no pretensions to thoroughness, when we talk about peak achievements of Bulgarian art that are commensurate to world achievements, we would place animation first. It is true that back in the 70s and 80s of the last century the world talked about Bulgarian school in the art of animation. The masters of this art appeared in world festivals as winners, receiving awards and participating in selection committees and creative discussions. 50-60 animated movies used to be produced annually in Bulgaria, and every animated movie making manual started and ended with our school in this art. And here they are, the fathers of Bulgarian animation and contemporary cartoon art, gathered together in Rayko Alexiev Gallery. Velin Andreev, Gencho Simeonov, Ivan Veselinov, Milko Dikov and Stoyan Dukov opened joint exhibition of cartoons and drawings. Even though their destinies and their creative quests are quite diverse, they resemble one another in their highly professional attitude towards art, their considerable authority in Bulgaria and abroad, and their remarkable creative achievement. It is hardly a surprise that the political figures that have been depicted in cartoon exhibitions in recent years are ostensibly absent here. As Milko Dikov says, "In the exhibition hall one need not address topical issues and burning questions that are typical for editorial cartoons. In the exhibition hall one need not be concerned about the issue of a newspaper, the advertisers' interest, the profit, and the media comfort of the corporation that supports the newspaper. The advantage of exhibition halls is that they provide the artist with the freedom to experiment with new types, new techniques, and new approaches to jokes that can be seen as philosophical generalizations. The hall has a different kind of magic. We should avoid the attempt to turn a cartoon exhibition into a topical review of the press. The artist should rather turn the exhibition hall into a temple where the spectator will find not the truth of the present day but the eternal truth. Those who have eyes to see will see it, and those who have heart will feel it." Calling themselves "Old boys", "Old men of the Holy Synod", and whatnot, these "Dinosaurs" of modern Bulgarian cartoon art showed us the road to the Temple of Cartoon in a unique exhibition that deserves our eternal gratitude. Nikolay Pekarev wrote on Facebook: "This is a great quintet in the Bulgarian cartoon and animation art. Hats off to them!"

On October 7, 2010, Milko Dikov entered solemnly the Seryakov House in the town of Troyan. The artist, who was born in this town 80 years ago, opened a cartoon exhibition there. The attendants saw a movie about the person celebrating his anniversary. He received a lot of greetings and flowers. The Troyan plum brandy was abundant, both literally and visually (as a cartoon topic). At the same time Milko Dikov should have gone to Istanbul where he was invited to attend the 30th anniversary celebrations of Aksehir cartoon exhibition. The maestro, however, preferred to stay in Troyan together with his co-citizens. On October 14, St. Paraskeva's Day, which was also the town feast day, Milko Dikov was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Troyan on the occasion of his anniversary and his lifetime creative achievement. The town's mayor, the local elite and the numerous attendants applauded their prominent co-citizen and expressed their sincere appreciation for the artist. Milko Dikov received also a Parliament Silver Sign from the Spokesperson of Bulgarian Parliament Tsetska Tsacheva.

In the past, court jesters and court musicians entertained the guests during royal feasts, creating an atmosphere transcending the dull routine. A court jester could be sent to the gallows for an impertinent joke. And in more recent times, in western saloons could be seen a sign that read: "Please don't shoot the piano player. He is doing his best". These two kinds of art have always been marked by a common destiny, even nowadays, and it was only a matter of time before such an exhibition was organized. Could an artist find greater solace than music? Musicians, on the other hand, seek their recreation and peace of mind in the art of humour. Maybe cartoon art and music are two sides of the same coin - a precious coin, indeed. Lucky are those who have it in their possession.

On April 1, 2010, a collection of the awarded cartoons and some other works from the 35th National Cartoon Exhibition was shown at Savchevs' Gallery in the town of Oryahovo. Even though it was All Fools' Day, the town people were not let down. Neither were the cartoonists. The gallery owner Neycho Savchev is famous in the art circles for his hospitality, but when there is mutual sympathy and friendliness things go beyond the aesthetic quest and are irresistibly drawn to the imaginary magnitudes of the sublime art. Even the morning headache of Chavdar Georgiev did not reduce our euphoria. Oryahovo, our love!

ÄÅÑÅÒÈ ÏËÅÍÅÐ ÍÀ ÊÀÐÈÊÀÒÓÐÀÒÀ - ÁÀË×ÈÊ' 2010 TENTH CARTOON PLAIN AIR IN THE TOWN OF BALCHIK' 2010
The plain air event and the display of the 35th National Cartoon Exhibition were just a small part of the summer cultural programme presented in the town of Balchik. The programme included various events: the May Cultural Festival, the 5th International Festival of Church Slavonic Singing "Saint Athanas", Dimitar Grozdanov's International Festival "Process - Space", the International Short Film Festival, the International Festival "Balchik Classic Days", the plain air event "European Horizons", the 7th International Children's Festival "Sea Smiles Balchik 2010", the 9th National Plain Air Event "Artists, Balchik, Love -European Sea Encounters", numerous competitions, singing contests, meetings, conventions, and so on and so forth... All this diversity defines Balchik as a town where cultural events make every day a festival. The fascination of the sea, the small seacoast pubs, and the romantic air of the place complete the unique atmosphere of these events. Cartoon art feels at home in Balchik.
Everybody was eager to conduct an interview...

ÈËÈßÍ ÑÀÂÊΠILIYAN SAVKOV, THE AFTERNOON OF A VIP, ETC.
On December 16, 2010 Iliyan Savkov opened an exhibition of 62 cartoons in the House of Humour in Gabrovo. This one-man show was organized due to the fact that the cartoonist won the award of the House of Humour and Satire at the 35th National Cartoon Exhibition in January 2010, Sofia. The website of the House of Humour and Satire says: "The Afternoon of a VIP, etc. testifies that the artist feels it is his duty to react instantly to all the events that change the destiny of a not fully awakened society; to make people see the true values of life; to warn them about stumbling blocks, falls, and disillusions; to try to "punish" the big political culprits while making his admirers laugh to their heart's content." So far so good, but... According to the secret agents of Cartoon Section at the UBA who attended the opening, the individual Iliyan Savkov declared - in the presence of all the attendants - that he was whole-heartedly devoted to his true lover - Painting, whereas Cartoon was for him something like a lawful wedded wife; a wife that provides for him and does the washing and cleaning, and tolerates his endless caprices. Harsh words, indeed. And he pronounced them in the Merry House, of all places - in the House of Humour in Gabrovo where Cartoon should be respected as the Queen of Arts. We, the Bulgarian cartoonists, are tolerant and benevolent toward Photography and Poster, we love and respect Painting, Small Sculpture, Drawing, and Graphics; we bid them welcome in the Merry House. Yet everybody must know that Cartoon is the householder of this House. She has built it and She is called upon to take care of its future. As for our colleague Iliyan Savkov, he will be punished for cheating on Cartoon. This is the sentence that Cartoon Section at the UBA imposes on him: he must work for Standart Daily as long as he lives. Iliyan, it's nothing personal, bro!

HRISTO KOMARNITSKI RECEIVED THE SEEMO AWARD South East Europe Media Organization (SEEMO) presented the Human Rights Award 2010 to the cartoonist Hristo Komarnitski who works for Sega Daily. "Very often a human rights defender can say much more with a single picture or cartoon than with tons of words. Thank goodness, we are not facing wars because of cartoons, but right now some cartoons are more precious and more worthy than many diplomatic efforts," said Milena Dimitrova, SEEMO Board Member. For Oliver Vujovic, SEEMO Secretary General "a good cartoonist is like a good journalist", and "we should not forget that very often cartoonists are subjected to the same kind of pressure as journalists." The SEEMO Human Rights Award is awarded annually. It was founded in 2002 on the occasion of International Human Rights Day - December 10. It's the first time that the prize has been awarded to a cartoonist. Congratulations, Hristo!

The National Exhibition Contest "What Does Bulgaria Think of Germany" was planned by Valentin Georgiev - cartoonist, Elena Velikova - director of Rousse Art Gallery, and Prof. Penka Angelova - director of Elias Kanetti House, Rousse. The idea was implemented with assistance from the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Sofia, Goethe-Institut, Robert Bosch Foundation, Elias Kanetti Cultural Centre, Rousse, and Rousse Art Gallery. Of all the entries that were submitted, 50 cartoons by 22 artists were selected for participation in the exhibition. It was opened on October 20, 2010 at the Rousse Art Gallery. The prizes were awarded by a selection committee presided over by Prof. Penka Angelova and consisting of the members: Bernd Janning, cultural manager of the Robert Bosch Foundation, Elena Velikova, director of Rousse Art Gallery, and Valentin Georgiev, cartoonist. I Prize - Chavdar Nikolov, II Prize - Tanya Paseva, III Prize - Ivaylo Tsvetkov Encouragement Prizes - Ceorgi Pasev and Julia Penkova The organizers intend to start a tradition, making the exhibition an annual event within the festival "The wit and humour of nations in images". As for us, Bulgarians, aren't we lucky that the exhibition's theme is not "What Does Germany think of Bulgaria"?
