WELCOME FROM THE PRESIDENT ESCRS Temple House Temple Road, Blackrock Co. Dublin Ireland Tel: +353 1 209 1100 Fax: +353 1 209 1112 Email: escrs@escrs.org Web: www.escrs.org

Dear Colleagues,

The Netherlands is a country with a particularly important place in cataract and implant surgery, as without the pioneering work of Cornelius Binkhorst intraocular lens implants may never have got off the ground, and so it is a particular pleasure to welcome you on behalf of the ESCRS Board to Maastricht for the 21st ESCRS Winter Meeting. We are very pleased to be joining our colleagues from the Netherlands Intra Ocular Implant Club and the Belgian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons for this important event. The scientific programme continues to include an extended didactic programme, with courses in Basic Optics, Cataract, Refractive Surgery and Cornea. We are also continuing our Young Ophthalmologists Programme on Friday morning, which proved such a success in recent years. We hope these courses will offer a valuable opportunity for residents and those in training to gain a deeper understanding of the basics of the different sub-specialties. The programme also includes four main symposia, free paper sessions, moderated poster sessions, eposter presentations and a range of surgical skills training courses. The Annual Cornea Day on Friday has been organised once again in conjunction with EuCornea and we would like to thank them for their continued participation in the Meeting. The live surgery session on Saturday afternoon has been organised by Rudy Nuijts and his colleagues at the Maastricht University Medical Centre. The Sunday morning symposium on ‘Contributions of the “Low Countries” to Ophthalmology’ has been organised by the Netherlands Intra Ocular Implant Club and the Belgian Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons. I would like to thank everyone involved for their contribution to the scientific programme. With so much on offer, it will be impossible to attend every session. However, if you log on to the Education Portal on the ESCRS website, you can access the sessions and didactic courses on ESCRS On Demand and ESCRS iLearn, as well as discover a wide range of video content and other materials. This year there are two new extremely important initiatives to draw your attention to. Applications are invited for the ESCRS Peter Barry Fellowship, which is an award of 50,000 Euros for a trainee to study in a centre of excellence for one year. The deadline for applications is 1 May 2017. The other notable initiative is the super specialist EBO-ESCRS examination in cataract and refractive surgery (FEBOS-CR) being held for the first time in Lisbon in September, which will set a new standard of excellence in our specialty. Further details of both are available on the ESCRS website. I hope you find the Meeting beneficial and rewarding, and that you enjoy your time in Maastricht.

Yours sincerely,

David Spalton President, ESCRS
